Re: Chapter 006 - The Underground City

Albricht stoppered his waterskin, the ritual complete, and almost reverently handed Biter over to the high priest. "I'll be lookin' forward to see your handiwork!"

The old water-finder's nose began to twitch violently at the sight of such wealth being brought out! Somewhere in the back of his mind a voice was trying to tell him something about being wary of things which seemed too good to be true, but the sparkling of precious metals always drowned out that voice!

Re: Chapter 006 - The Underground City

Vsaati whispered to Voran in a low voice, worried about not only her own ability to combat the undead but that of the others as well.  He'd established a rapport with the cleric, maybe he could wheedle something more.

"Can they supply us with blessings, or holy reliquaries, or silvered or enchanted weapons suitable to those refusing death?  I fear I will be of little help against many of the creatures we may encounter in the catacombs, without some additional advantages."

Re: Chapter 006 - The Underground City

Elboc watches carefully as the gold is doled out.  He feels certain that they are being played somehow, but he can’t figure out exactly why.  This fellow would have to be an utter imbecile to hand over 5000 gold on a mere promise of results.  Could he be more desperate than he appeared?

Voran shakes his head to Vsaati. "I have my doubts as to whether they are even really clerics. We will have to make do."

Roak shrugs. "Let's find a place with some bags that we can buy or trade for. Some of us should stay here with our gold--Voran and Elboc, maybe you two guys. The rest of us will go get an extra bag each."

Re: Chapter 006 - The Underground City

Albricht scratched at his whiskers, his lazy eye wandered upward and to his left, a visual cue that the old geezer was calculating in his mind. He waited while everyone got their situation sorted out. He was eager to explore more of the city and whatever it was that lay below, but in his mind he was still thinking about how to get water to the surface world and what that might entail.

The Burghammer name would certainly be known again, that's for sure!

<Unless you really want to role-play it, we can just assume that you get appropriate directions, the citizens and shop keepers are suitably wacky, and you get your containers and basic supplies.  Let me know if you want to shop for anything more than what is on the shopping lists in the Basic Set Player's Manual.>

Elboc has a quiver with anticipation, but he’d prefer some more arrows.  And possibly a couple with silver tips.

Re: Chapter 006 - The Underground City

It takes some time, asking around, especially with the erratic and unpredictable nature of most of the Cynidiceans, but the party eventually finds a small number of vendors that sell silver-tipped arrows, silver daggers, and silver sling bullets.  A small number of magic arrows (14) can be had for 50gp each, and three magic crossbow quarrels (also for that same price).

Re: Chapter 006 - The Underground City

Albricht was elated to finally find some metal-working here in this odd underground city. He eyed the magical crossbow bolts, evaluating them with an expert eye and found them to be of above-average workmanship. He fiddled and fussed with the silver daggers until he found just the right one that fit his hand and was sturdy enough for dwarven standards.

"Lost my last one out in the sands during the caravan when I was digging for water," he explained to the vendor and his companions. "It had a thickened tang like this one," he pointed, "but the hilt was wider to fit my hand like that one... It also had a straight, double-edged blade, but all of these seem to be curved or clipped. I suppose this one is well-enough made, and I like the little fish-woman inlay on the handle. I'll take it." Albricht had no idea what a mermaid was, and would probably be horrified if he knew such creatures of legend actually existed.

OOC: Didn't someone else recently acquire a crossbow in the party? Vsaati maybe? I don't remember. Anyway, Albricht will purchase them and hold them until his recent deal with the High Check-casher is completed.

After no small amount of looking, Albricht is able to locate sellers with two (2) magical maces, one with only a very basic bonus (+1) and the other with a bit higher bonus (+2).  They are offered for 1500 and 3000 GP, respectively.

Re: Chapter 006 - The Underground City

Further searching through the town uncovers a shortbow +1 on sale for 2500 GP, a longbow +1 on sale for 6000 GP, 20 arrows +1 for 500 GP, a sword +2 for 6200 GP, and a +2 sling for 450 GP.

Also, the party is able to find four (4) shields +1 for 350 GP each.

Some quick asking around hooks you up with a brother of Gorm who is willing to part with several vials of holy water (up to 15) for 35 GP each.

(I have no idea how much cash is at Lanliss' disposal beyond the 5gp listed. But if possible Lanliss will purchase the longbow and arrows, but would settle for the shortbow if the longbow is beyond budget.)

Elboc inquires as to whether or not his credit is good enough to finance that longbow +1.

(Btw... I could see a Bag of Holding being quite useful.)

Re: Chapter 006 - The Underground City

Inquiries into the question of credit don't yield any positive result for the dark elf.  None of the locals are willing to extend credit to someone they simply don't know.

Also, there don't seem to any bags of holding available locally.

Re: Chapter 006 - The Underground City

Albricht had produced one of the nubs of chalk he had rattling around in a chestpouch. He found a relatively flat stone wall, and began scratching out a series of figures and calculations in neat, straight columns. His gnarled hand deftly guided the chalk as he added, subtracted and emgified* across the stony surface. Once in a while he'd stop and place his hands on his hips, apparently thinking. Those watching might believe to actually hear gears turning inside his head and lazy tendrils of smoke climbing now and then from his overly large ears.

"Well lads, if I figure right there should be plenty of coin for the items we've found. The thing is," he leaned in conspiratorially, "Timmy said that the vendors might not even accept our metal depending on their state of mind. Now I'm not one to cheat these folks out of earning a living, but the only outfit I've seen down here that actually deals in coin are the Brothers of Madura... That's probably why the High Priest offered us so much, where else is he going to spend it? At any rate, we should try to keep our hands on as much of this treasure as we can, and perhaps spend a little to commission our own vault constructed. That way we won't be so bogged down with bags of jingle as we go about dealing with the crypts below the city."

"So let's get squared away. We're in no hurry, there's no time nor calendar clause in our contract with the Gormies, so let's figure out how to secure our fortune, and then let's set about getting to work below. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to me that anyone in the city believes there's anything beyond Cynodecia and the narrowing world above, so we can't commission a message to my folk and at least get something moving forward for a water pumping system. Also, I've been thinking that in order to make deals and trade eventually, we'll need to get these people sober... somehow. A different food source would be a start, but beyond that I'm out of ideas for the moment. Any ideas?"

*Emgified: Higher dwarven mathematics that combines multiplication and division plying the mystical geometrical properties of a secret underdelver polygon called... you guessed it... the heptahaptoblaptofedzemgigon

OOC: Not to bog things down, but maybe a montage of us getting it all done and then proceeding henceforth and furtherfore.

<I'm good with a shopping montage.  Divide the loot and buy what you can.  The only magic available for sale will be what I've listed, but other non-magical items are readily available for the prices listed in the Player's Manual or the Expert Rulebook.>
