Character Creation Thread

I'm going to trust everyone to make their own rolls for basic stats.  Roll 4D6 and drop the low die, roll seven (7) stats and drop the low stat.  Take maximum hit points at first level.  If you are a caster (elf or magic-user), go ahead and choose your own spells.  Per OD&D standards, clerics won't have spells until 2nd level.  I've never run druids or mystics in OD&D, so I'm not going to allow them right off.  Take maximum gold at first level as well, instead of rolling, unless you're amused by the possibility of having less.

Post your race (if demi-human) or class (if human) and name when you've got them, along with a brief character description.

Re: Character Creation Thread

Sherborne is a cleric who carries a war hammer and a sling.  He is generally wearing plate mail when out adventuring with his holy symbol visible around his neck.  He has sandy blond hair and blue eyes and is slightly taller than average in height.

Character Creation Steps

1.  Roll for ability scores (4d6 per stat, drop the low die, and roll seven stats, dropping the low stat).
2.  Choose a class (fighter, cleric, thief, magic-user, elf, dwarf, or halfling).
3.  Exchange ability score points (if desired).
4.  Take max hit points at 1st level (this game only), plus your Constitution bonus, if any.
5.  Take max money (180gp) at 1st level (this game only).
6.  Buy equipment.
7.  Figure out your:
    a.  Armor Class
    b.  hit roll chart
    c.  saving throws
8.  Note adjustments for ability scores.
9.  Give your character a name and alignment.
10. If you are a magic-user or elf, select two (2) first-level spells and put them in your spellbook.  If you are a cleric, write down your turning chart.  If you are a thief, copy down your thief special ability table.
11. Make a note of how many XP you need to advance to the next level.
12. Ignore encumbrance, largely.

Well, we'll need an MU, any reason why he can't be a dark elf? Lol

Was taught DnD while on a ship in the early(84ish) 80's in Navy. Like it a lot but haven't played for about 12 years.

In reply to Squidcv41 (msg # 7):

As this is OD&D, there are no dark elves, although I have no problem with you playing one for flavor.  "Elf" is a class in OD&D, not a race the way we normally think of it, and elves are essentially all multi-classed fighter/magic-users (to use AD&D terms).  The fighter, cleric, thief, and magic-user are all human.  Dwarves and halflings are all fighters.

Re: Character Creation Steps

I am not totally sure, but most of the time when folks say OD&D that I have heard, it refers to the original version which is this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D...6_Dragons_%281974%29

The red book is D&D basic which came out later.  I don't know how similar the rules are because I have never read the original books.  This is the version I assume we are playing:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D...26_Dragons_Basic_Set

I have the 1981 version.

As far as the form goes, it helps to have a basic knowledge of html.  But, you can try and be careful and just substitute your numbers for his.

As for the second question, the DM has to make that change.

"Select" 4d6. In "General" use Drop lowest in the droplist and put a 1 in box next to it. Check Record each die to see all the rolls as well.

I've made all of the character sheets user-editable.  This should help keep me from having to do a lot of typing.  Stay honest with your edits and this will be a fun game for everyone.

Looks good to me! Cheers

Re: Character Creation Steps

Dungeon Master:
It looks like you still need to select two first-level spells.

According to the DM's Guide, one must always be Read Magic. Are we playing with that rule? If not, I'll switch for another spell.

Dungeon Master:
Food and water on your character sheets will be a waste, so you might not want to bother with them.

Does that include Holy Water?

I'm ready to start, if everyone else is.

My understanding is that we are playing with D&D basic so there is no DM's guide.  I didn't reread the part on Magic Users, but I will try and find time tonight if it isn't clarified before then.

Sorry, I meant the DM's Rulebook. It says this on page 18:

The first spell given should always be
Read Magic. This allows the character to
read scrolls found, and would be a basic
part of the character's training.

I'm not the DM but I wouldn't think so if it was sealed by the Holy Church. But we are in the desert so...

I'm glad to get started too! If everyone is ready of course. Albricht may be able to find us some water here abouts. I'm hoping with fingers and furry toes crossed! Cheers

Re: Character Creation Steps

In reply to Silverglade (msg # 51):

Then the rule set we are using should be clarified.  I have seen OD&D referenced, but I think the real intention was to play Basic D&D because of the reference to the 'red book', the directions I am seeing appear to be basic, and the DM I think referenced getting the rule set in 1985. Please correct me if I am wrong.

On page B16 it says the magic user gets one spell in the spell book, and the spells available are:  Charm Person, Detect Magic, Floating Disc, Hold Portal, Light, Magic Missile, Protection From Evil, Read Languages, Read Magic, Shield, Sleep, and Ventriloquism.  For the description of Read Magic it says the cast doesn't need it to read his own magic.  It's basic so I don't think this part was especially fleshed out as far as just how a magic user would get new spells.  But it sound like either the DM picks, or the DM can allow the player to pick the spell.

Re: Character Creation Steps

In reply to Sherborne (msg # 55):

I'm using the Mentzer version of the Basic rules.  Since Read Magic is so fundamental, I'm going to say that magic-users and elves have it in their books in addition to the two spells they start with (for a total of three (3) spells in their books at start).

While the characters won't have food or water with them at the start of the adventure, this doesn't mean that they won't have holy water.  Holy water is not affected by this.

To follow on from what Sherborne has said. Basic rules red book. First level Magic User = 1 spell to go into his or her spell book. That's it. I can't see or remember anything from basic rules about everyone having read magic like in later editions. Read Magic is powerful when you think about what it allows (eg Read Magic required for reading MU spell scrolls) however not really a choice for 1st level MU adventurer (Sleep, MM, Prot from Evil all useful stuff).

All that being said without Read Magic how does a 2nd level MU get to learn his second first level spell without reading it somewhere or learning it from something someone else has written down etc. Maybe each MU casts slightly differently and effectively works out the secret knowledge in their own way without needing Read Magic as each MU can read their own spell book writings.

EDIT: Just saw DM ruling so there's the answer. :)

Re: Character Creation Steps

Elboc just needs to get me some equipment, which I'm OK having him update the character sheet after we begin playing.  This is supposed to be a relaxed and fun game, so I'm not using a spreadsheet to keep track of who said what when and tally the microscopic differences in the weights of otherwise inconsequential things.

I'm good with us starting any time, as all of the rest seems to be in order.  When you're ready, start posting in the "Chapter000" thread.
