Spoiler for Oregon Refuge Occupation: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
A southern Oregon rancher and his son were found guilty in 2006 of starting a backfire on their ranch that eventually got away and ended up burning about 140 acres of sagebrush grazing land which they leased from the BLM (Federal Bureau of Land Management). The judge in the case sentenced them to 3 months and 1 year respectively, of federal prison time, which they served, even though the minimum sentence was 5 years due to the case being considered "domestic terrorism". Apparently, the judge felt that the minimum sentence was too much for the minor nature of their "crime". Fast forward to 2015. A new federal prosecutor appeals the minimum sentencing and it is upheld, requiring the rancher and his son return to federal prison to finish the minimum sentence. They are also fined $400,000, required to seek probationary permission for any purchase or sale of more than $500, and required to sign a First Right of Refusal to the BLM meaning if they are forced to sell their ranch, it must be sold to the BLM.
A group of men and women, fellow ranchers themselves, who had faced similar overreach by the BLM in Nevada, came to attempt to aid these two ranchers so they'd not have to return to prison. They tried every legal means they could think of, but in the end, the federal prosecutor told the ranchers that if they continued to speak with the leader of this group, that they'd be taken by force back to prison and put in "less desirable conditions". Fearful of where this might lead, the ranchers turned themselves in. The group who'd come to try and help them staged a huge peaceful protest in front of the courthouse. After the protest, the leader and a handful of others, decided to occupy a bird refuge thirty miles away until the ranchers were freed. This they did, and stayed there for nearly a month.
During this time, they carried personal sidearms, and were thus considered by the media as being "armed militants". They never once drew a weapon, they never once threatened anyone, they never once even suggested violence in any manner. These are ranchers and carry guns every day. They were armed simply as a means to protect themselves and exercise their 2nd amendment right while they exercised their 1st amendment rights. They had also looked down the barrels of BLM agents two years prior who'd unlawfully stolen their cattle, which had ended in a tense standoff with the BLM finally backing down and allowing the cowboys to gather their carrle.
While they were at the refuge, they cleaned out the shop, serviced equipment, made repairs on structures and buildings, shoveled snow and tried to show how much neglect the place had been left in by federal employees. During the "occupation" visitors were welcome, media were welcome, and locals were welcome to come and speak with the men and women who had "taken over" the refuge in protest of the ranchers going to prison.
As a layer of protection, several state militias arrived to act as a buffer when the FBI and State Police began rolling in. The feds commandeered the Jr. High School building for a command center, they set up barricades and cordons around the Sheriff's Office and Courthouse, and they took over the small airport facilities. All of this in response to a group of peaceful occupiers thirty miles away! The occupiers were allowed to come and go as they wished, for the only crime they'd possibly committed was trespassing. They set up town hall meetings where they tried to educate the community about what they were doing and how the BLM had been heavy-handed throughout the western USA. They also asked the Sheriff and the FBI to meet with them face to face, to discuss the situation, even going unarmed to their respective offices in person. Neither the FBI nor the Sheriff would meet with them, and instead hid themselves behind phones and hundreds of armored and armed deputies and agents.
As had been their course to this point, they set up a meeting in the neighboring county, coordinating with the Sheriff there who was sympathetic to their cause and had demonstrated his own defiance of federal overreach. This Sheriff had also offered them sanctuary in his custody if they would consider leaving the refuge and coming to his county instead. The leaders of the group were going to teach about two hundred ranchers, loggers and miners at this meeting about how they could begin pushing back against draconian policies. On the way to that meeting, where the Sheriff of that county awaited to introduce them, they were ambushed by Oregon State Police, under the direction of the FBI.
The FBI has released video of what happened as these people were arrested, and one of them was killed. They have a narrative of what they say happened. However, in the back seat of one of the vehicles, was an 18 year old young woman who had been asked to go along in order to sing the National Anthem at the town hall meeting they were going to speak at. After she was released (there was no warrant for her arrest) she immediately called a radio show and recounted what happened only hours before. Her story is nothing like the FBI's narrative.
As things stand now, the family of the slain cowboy occupier are very upset and claim this was nothing short of murder. Currently, there are a couple of holdouts at the refuge. Even though all the leaders are either gone or in custody, these four are planning to stay. They are not part of the group that came to protest the second incarceration of the ranchers, they are pilers-on with their own agenda. The community (about 7000 people in the entire County which is twice the size of Rhode Island) is in uproar. Many are sad that a good man lost his life, many are angry at the agencies involved, and many simply want a return to normality. The militias, having been betrayed in their negotiations by the FBI, are calling for the resignation of local leaders and the evacuation of federal resources.
Meanwhile, many of us in surrounding counties are trying to assist in keeping people calmed down. This is a big deal, as one wrong move on either side could spark further deadly conflict. In this telling, I've tried to stick as close to the facts as I could, but I'm sure you can tell that there's a fair amount of emotion attached. I'm personally angered and upset that things ever progressed this far. Our elected representatives, from the Governor on down to the Sheriff, failed to intercede on behalf of their fellow citizens. Thus we find ourselves in a very precarious position where people feel like they can get no redress of grievances nor progress through judicial remedy. Cowboys are some of the country's greatest patriots, but they're also independent and stubborn.
If you are a praying person, I'd ask you to do so in order that this can all end peacefully.
