Re: Varna Pass
Rosie enthusiastically applauded the song, "Oh that was lovely! Not often I get to hear such nice things out here. Just lovely!" "Thank you, thank you," said Jehan as he basked in the praise. His companions enjoyed the tune as well. It was always nice having some entertainment with a meal. [Private to Zoltan Zanderhawk: Both the soup and music warmed the heart. Zoltan was glad for that, for a split moment ago he felt that familiar cold spot arising, a feeling he tried to ignore as best he could. Perhaps it wasn't healthy to ignore it, but he didn't care. As Jehan thoughtlessly plucked some tunes and rifts on his lute, he would take brief pauses for a spoonful of his own soup. Before long the adventurers finished and felt full and content. They unanimously complemented it. "Thank you dearies," Rosie replied. "It's just nice having company around. My old husband has been a soldier all his life. I only see him for a couple months or so outta the year, so I'm in this house by myself most the time. It might be less this year with the invasion and all. They say Vaterland has the north provinces right now and they're inching their way down. Not that I'm worried mind you. This has all happened before. It's almost tradition that we invade each other now, taking turns every so many years. Things always go back to the way they were in the end."
After some more casual chat, Eike then asked about where she sold the desk. Rosie answered, "Oh you want to see that thing? My, I wish I held onto it for another couple weeks – I could have sold it to you! I sold it to the General Store. They quite got a bargain for it too since I just wanted to get rid of it. I think Manual paid a lot for it cause it's one of those imported furnitures; he had an interest in things like that, which is odd around here. I guess being curious about the world around him is what made him so smart." When Rosie mentioned the General Store, a realization struck the adventurers, for, if they weren't mistaken, they saw that same desk no more than a couple hours ago! Excited at their discovery, they graciously thanked Rosie for the meal and her kindness once more and parted from the house. The could smell the spice-filled scent of her home fade away with every step from the front door.
Retracing their steps, they went back to the General Store in the Town Square. It looked the same as before, filled with furniture on one side and a number of mundane objects on the other; the old shopkeeper, his eye glazed with age, kept a listless watch over the shop. The adventuers went over to the furniture section. Zoltan noticed the stack of stools he had knocked over not long ago. He stepped very carefully around them this time.
In the last aisle were the desks and tables, crowded together in a long, not-very-spacious row. They squeezed through this toward the rear where they found the dark-colored, wooden desk. It was still there. Being the only desk of this color in the entire shop, it was no doubt the one Rosie had sold – the one which was previously owned by Manual Keirch. "Let's search it," said Jehan. They opened the various drawers and patted their hands along the interior. It was empty. Clearly Rosie had emptied it out before selling it. "Oh drat," said Eike. "All that for nothing." "Yea," Zoltan agreed. "Well, we might as well head on to the Iron Mineeee-oooo wait a minute!" Staring at a drawer that was still open, Zoltan reach inside... and pulled out a false bottom!
Lying in a secret space beneath the false bottom of the drawer, covered in dust and untouched after many years, was a book. The Journal of Manual Keirch.
