The Finale

Pain. Marcus's vision whited out for a brief moment, and he had to fight to not have his breath wrested from him. He snarled, and started to wheel on his assailant, but in doing so noticed Adwonus rushing to join the fray. He turned on the ball of his foot, twisting very suddenly the other direction and stepped nimbly around Gage, ducking under and within his reach as the other man appeared in the space he had just stood.

In the same motion Marcus attacked the large man's back, putting all of his weight and the entirety of his momentum into returning the pain he had been dealt in kind. With grim determination, he aimed to fell his foe.

Free action: Choosing Gage as Dodge. 1st: Move action, Tumble to D16, through C17. 2nd, Attack Gage, Two handed + Skirmish, flanking with Adwonus.

The Finale

A few drops of blood fall to the ground as I watch them. The sting of her blade felt a bit sharper than just the wound itself. I glare at Taisiya with cold eyes, but without saying a word I turn my gaze back to Alldyde. With even more fury lunge at him, trying to hold him down and stop this madness. "This will be your end!" I shout as I attempt to grab him. {I attempt to grapple Alldyde.}

The Finale

Blood. Pain. Confusion. That is all that filled this room. From the blows taken by his friends, to Taisiya attacking her own friends all up to Barnett attempting to get Jacqueline to leave with him... Leaving the party to die. He was afraid of Alldyde, for good reason... But Jacqueline knew better than to leave the rest to die... Right? Imbellem stood. The sound of meat on flesh, iron on iron, as well as steel to armor... It was chaos, pure hell.

There was nothing he could do. What could he do? He was to far to help anyone for now...

Warmth.

At first he panicked, thinking it was the fires of hell channeled though Alldyde again, but he looked down at his hand. The back of his hand, it burned. The cross, meant to insult God, served him a daily reminder that he was never alone. Even now, in this war against a man of magic. Imbellem was more than worthless at the moment, that much he knew. But God? Thats another story. Imbellem took a moment to clear his head in prayer, not for ease of battle, but the strength to endue, and help as they tried for shoot for the stars.

quote:
"Abba father, I am... confused; conflicted. You bring us to this man with powers not of this earth... You say in your gospel, you give us not the spirit of fear, but of peace. Why now is fear coursing though the very air? Lord God, Please, remove this miasma of doubt and fear, fill our hearts with the blessings you promised to us though your word. We fight men of evil- and woman it seems... Lord I ask- no beg, Lord please take mercy on us your soldiers. Aid us in this holy battle. Though going to paradise is alright by me, I feel this is not your plan for our end. If it is, so let it be, there will be no complaints. But if it is not, Fill us with your holy fire, neigh; water. This man is the fire of hell incarnate. Lord you fill our cups, and they overflow everlasting. Allow this holy water to aid those in need. Aid their swings, guide their steps, help their wounds to not hinder them. Cloud the minds of our enemies, let none who stand against you stand at all. Loosen the grips on their weapons, weaken their legs, invade their mind. Remind them whom they fight, truly. Not us, but you. The Lord of All. Let them see that there is no hope for those who stand against you. Alldyde is a man of this earth, his powers are not of it. By the blood of your lamb I demand he remain silent. Keep his forked tongue behind his teeth, keep words of evil to pass his lips that cause evil power to flow through his wicked body. I ask a favor lord, strike him with you power, perhaps cloud his mind so he cannot attack us with the power of hell. Lord, you've been prominent with us and have never let us down. I know you wont this time either. Grant us skills of the angels, fearsome in battle, yet forgiving and graceful. Warriors that give those who see them just a glimpse of your fury. Send confusion in the camp of mine enemy so that he may not have power over me, and aid us in our time of great need. Lord, my heart is filled with fury, this man attacks with power not of his own and calls himself a man of great power. Lord, I realize the selfishness of this but show him he is not the only one with powers like this. Allow your power to flow though me, delivering a strike to him that will shake his foundations, give him the spirit of fear- The fear of God. I thank you for your provision as i know that it has been heard and answered. Bless those in battle now, I wish only that i could trade places with them... My heart aches for their pain. Help us father. Strike him down with holy light... I forget myself, rage overcomes me, forgive me. Nos vero pugnabimus pro vobis. In your holy name, I say for possibly the last time, Amen."

[Cast Obscuring mist once Jacqueline is in position and fires]

-out of order sorry. On my phone. Hope the message is clear-

Imbellem felt a touch better after his moment with the Lord, perhaps that is all he needed. He walked slowly in prayer and as he passed the pillar he saw the man pleading with Jacqueline. He boiled with anger as he focused his rage toward Barnett, who felt eyes upon him and looked at the priest. "You cowardly fool" Imbellem nearly shouted. Standing upright. eyes burning. "You follow a man, nearly kill a girl you call close to a daughter and you beg for her to leave. Leave her friends to die. To a man YOU followed? You call yourself a man... How dare you. Any man would strike the man who dare lay harm to her, or even instructs you to do so. Develop balls sir." He said with a shocking turn of words for a priest... even though he wasnt officially included into the church, but The Lord works in mysterious ways. "If you had any sense of dignaty, of decency, of honor. You would aid those who fight the snake who bit at the man you followed. Her father. And at her herself. You almost took her life, do you recall? I do. I was there. Words cannot express what I would do to you should you come near me. Redeem yourself. You know this... thing. You fight better than the most of us. Cut the head off the snake, end the flow of venom. Regain your honor. Honor Red Jack. And if you touch her, there will be no force on earth that will stop me from hunting you down and crushing you beneath my boot. Should anything happen to her from your hand and you die before i get a chance to kill you, I will storm the gates of hell, and drag your ass back out simply to do it again... And again... Help us kill Alldyde. With your help. It will be a piece of cake. If you run, you only prove me right. Your choice afterall. But remember, you cant outrun death."

He then turned his head to the white haired woman. "You..." He looked down and shook his head. "I dont know you, I hadnt the time, you left too soon. But from what i heard, the wonderful stories, how they described you... This is not what i expected. You shame yourself. These are your friends, you traveled with them, laughed, ate, and bled together... This is how you repay them? You are no better than Alldyde... your 'lover'. A frail man who hides behind magic and watches those less fortunate die without a care. Is that a man you wish to spend your life with? Those boots dont look like they need a fresh coat of blood every few hours... Look outside. He did this. All the blood. All the unwarrented death... He caused it. And you stand by him? If that is where you choose to stay so be it. You are no better and will be dealt with just as harshly. But please, be the woman I heard stories of. A kind, lovely woman who would do anything for her friends. Well, this is that moment. We need your help, Taisiya."

[Private to DM Ryan: Imbellem Tueri rolled 15 Diplomacy, Taisiya, Help us, not Alldyde.]

[Imbellem moves to D11 and raises his shield in a full defensive stance]

The Finale

Lady Jacqueline drew in a breath, pressing her lips into a thin line. Her emotions shifted quickly from confusion to anger. The next moment, she struck him with the back of her hand. "Up, man. Neither you nor I serve this pitiful wizard in any way-- except to be his very puppets. I cannot very well see my father if I'm to be this guy's expendable puppet." The words were said sharply through her teeth. Her hand gripped his shoulder, and Jacqueline stared him down. "No, if you want to make right the betrayal you had for mine and my father's blood... you join us. Alldyde is greatly outnumbered-- and you likely know of a weakness of his, aye?" She didn't blink. Not once. She tightened her jaw a little. "Perhaps if you can convince Gage to join us, too, that would be appreciated. You know how my father was capable of a lot of his victories-- well... I must get that from somewhere." She drew in another breath and calmly stated her position, "Join us, Barnett. You will be safe with us. Your life will be spared with us, in contrast to the man who thinks lives are expendable." Her chin inclined towards Alldyde, who was surrounded by her fellow friends. She quickly speaks up after seeing Taisiya hit Michael. "Taisiya! You have time to save yourself from this guy-- I mean, seriously! What kind of a fiance isolates his future bride from her friends? You deserve so much better!" Turning back to Barnett, Jacqueline gave him one look that he would never forget. It was the look of, If you betray me again, you will lose your life with no questions asked.

(Attempts to do diplomacy on Barnett and Taisiya.)

Readying herself for evading a possible attack from Barnett-- or anyone else, for that matter-- she also readied her bow with an arrow, taking aim at Gage, and quietly stepping toward him, behind Dwalin.

(Ending at C12, which would be a +1 in attack under 30 feet; Ryan, please post Gage's spot and listen checks against my hide and move silently checks:

The Finale

"I will not suffer the curse! I have been redeemed from the curse of the law! No weapon formed against me shall prosper! My enemy comes at me 1 way and flees before me 7 ways. You teacheth mine hands to War, Lord. As He is, so am I in this world! In the name of Jesus, I have the victory!" Verses flow from my lips like water as I speak them to myself...

Now it is the time to ACT. I trust God and walk by faith and not by sight, God is my provider, protector, and success.

The pain beckons at me to give up, to turn, to run, to surrender, yet my heart burns all the brighter.  I must work hard to keep my fury at a level I can still think with... but then again, perhaps, thought is no longer needed.  Only action, my hands and feet direct my noble steed like he is my own legs. In anger I attempt to crush my enemy with my mounts feet.  Alas I am unable to do so and attack myself as well with my mounts hooves.  My mount bites in anger while I deal with the lack of saddle.  Like my difficulty with the lack of saddle, I see how Kelden and Darus have attacked, but not as I asked.  And where is Grao I ask, he did not run up as I asked.  I hope they know what they are doing.  They seem to think and act for themselves in spite of what I say... I find it frustrating, like the lack of saddle, yet I know that even so, we will still prevail.  They have a brave heart, and that makes a difference, like my horse's teeth.

{18:42, Tue 08 Dec: Herr Johannes rolled 11 using 1d20+6.  Ride Check, guide with knees; MQ.(act with both my hands and feet while mounted) (Success)
18:43, Tue 08 Dec: Herr Johannes rolled 8 using 1d20+6.  Ride Check; Fight with War Horse, MQ. (1st attack of full attack, hoof 1) (fail)
02:20, Today: Secret Roll: Herr Johannes rolled 9 using 1d20+6.  Ride Check, Fight with War Horse (attack 2 of 3); MQ. (2nd attack of full attack, hoof 2) (fail)
02:23, Today: Secret Roll: Herr Johannes rolled 12 using 1d20+6.  Ride Check, Fight with War Horse (attack 3 of 3); MQ. (3rd attack of full attack, bite) (Success)
02:40, Today: Secret Roll: Herr Johannes rolled 16 +2 for flanking +1 for high ground unless just me as mounted? -1 for size of mount = 17 or 18 using 1d20+3.  AR on Alldyde, Bite from Horse; MQ.
02:53, Today: Secret Roll: Herr Johannes rolled 5 using 1d4+2.  DMG on Alldyde, from Mount Bite; MQ.
}

Infuriated by the fire from his hand for me speaking to Taisiya, I nearly miss an act, perhaps less believable, Taisiya just struck Mikael!?  After which, I look over to see Barnett kneel before Jacqueline.  Sweat spills down my face, the burns screaming, until... I feel a cool sensation as water flow over my being and focus return.  I have not time to examine if the burns left, but I know I must act.  The men and women must see that this man is not invincible, Barnett must see he is not invincible, his reign of fear must be broken!  "I REBUKE YOU SPIRIT OF FEAR!  YOU HAVE NO POWER HERE!  I WALK BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT!  ALLDYDE, WE WILL HAVE THE VICTORY!"

"Marcus! Attack Alldyde! or if you have to fall back, Attack with Kelden, flank together!

KELDEN! MOVE OUT OF DWALIN"S WAY AND ATTACK GAGE!
Grao! Where are you! Grapple someone!
Darus! Attack ALLDYDE! We must kill him! Then the rest will flee or surrender! {5ft to C20 and attack ALLDYDE!}
Edgarren! move up with Jacqueline!
{If nessesary, I make a diplomacy check on each of them to listen}

BARNETT, BEHOLD AND SEE THAT THIS MAN IS NOT INVINCIBLE. HE IS ONLY A MAN!
"

{03:17, Today: Secret Roll: Herr Johannes rolled 6+2 for flank? =+8 using 1d20+3.  AR on Alldyde, Guisarme; MQ (PWR ATK 5). (DMG = 2d4+3+10) (I forgot to smite evil this round when I rolled, however with a natural 3 would it have made a difference? Can I add it after I roll anyways?)
03:19, Today: Secret Roll: Herr Johannes rolled 5 using 1d20+2.  Diplomacy, on Barnett; MQ.
}

"God, send a miracle, we need an angel! Even Taisiya is attacking us. We need you Lord! We need your help!" I pray quietly to myself after I see my strike.

{I engage in a full attack against Alldyde, 2 of my mounts attacks I cannot do, the 3rd is a 17 AR, I 5ft step to F/G 20/19. I then attack Alldyde with my Guisarme. I take cover with my mount if I am attacked (DC 15 ride check, +6 ride total)}

Order of Events: (I am guessing)
Jacqueline moves to C12 and sneak attacks Gage (her sneak attack is 3d6 and he if he is FF has no DEX)
Kelden moves out of Dwalin's way and attacks Gage (flanking with Marcus?)
Mikael grapples Alldyde (flanking with Marcus, his touch attack would be light and receive the bonus from his weapon finesse ie use his dex)
Marcus tumbles and attacks Gage ending in E17 so Dwalin has 1 less AoO to worry about? or waits to attack until Dwalin is in position - getting a flank?
Dwalin Charges and knocks over Alldyde while Mikael is grappling him (no dex while grappled, and flanked with me)
I attack Alldyde (flanking with Dwalin) then step back and attack again.
Adwonus moves up
Imbellem moves up and prays

Edgarren stays with Jacqueline?
Grao moves up and attacks?

Before I move on, I want to rant: wtf... I got 2 natural 1s last round, 1 nat 2 and 3 natual 3s this round. Rant over.

The Finale

Dwalin lowered his head like a bull readying charge; his shield became the horns. Planting armored feet into ground, he burst into a mighty sprint, bellowing a dwarven warcry which thundered through the hearts of all. He was the avalanche. Every quake echoing from his footsteps reminded the world of his dwarven strength (and perhaps the need to lose weight too); barreling thus, he charged into Alldyde. He struck the sorcerer with a powerful slam of his shield, so powerful that Alldyde's feet flung out from under him, and he did something like a flip in midair before landing flat on his back on the floor {Dwalin deals 5 damage to Alldyde; Trip Success}.

Mikael leapt onto the toppled Alldyde and began the dogpile {Mikael deals 2 damage to Alldyde; Grapple Success}. Alldyde heaved a deep breath as the wind was knocked out of him. Maybe the elf needed to lose weight as well.

And as if this wasn't enough, Herr Johannes encouraged his horse to beat on poor Alldyde too. Although the buried sorcerer was too low its divine flurry of hooves, it stretched down its divine white neck and divinely bit Alldyde's leg! Alldyde began to regret certain life choices at this point {Horse deals 5 damage to Alldyde}. Herr Johannes swung down his guisarme, but this (mercifully) missed.

Darus however had slightly less mercy for Alldyde. Stepping beside the man – who already had an elf on top of him, a horse biting his leg, and a lingered concussion from Dwalin's shield – Darus plunged down his longsword rather vengefully {Critical Hit ~ Darus deals 10 damage to Alldyde}. Meanwhile, Adwonus closed in the other side, and now the adventurers formed nigh a full circle around their opponent, leaving him few options for escape.

***

Elsewhere, Imbellem and Jacqueline talked some sense into Barnett. Perhaps it was Imbellem's persuasiveness or Jacqueline's back-handed slap (probably the slap - that shit hurt), but Barnett finally came around. "Your right. I can't just leave you here Miss Corelia. If you insist on staying, I'll do what I can." At that, Barnett ran back toward the battlefield and slipped behind a pillar in a very rogue-like fashion.

That taken care of, Jacqueline gave her full attention back to the fight, and she swiftly moved forward up the hall. As though their minds were on the same page, Imbellem already knew what she was going to do and had her covered; chanting a prayer, the area around Jacqueline began to grow foggy, as though each one of her steps released a wave of mist from the ground. And by the time she reached her position, she was completely covered in an embankment of fog. Outside the mist, all anyone could see now was the blurry outline of her figure, followed by a blurry movement, and finally a blurry arrow, that became clear real quick as it sailed into Gage's chest {Jacqueline deals 17 to Gage; Sneak Attack}.

***

Gage grabbed the end of the arrow and broke it off in the manliest way possible. Meanwhile, Marcus had wheeled around to the other side of Gage. The tattoed giant followed him with dark and threatening eyes. "Think you can defeat me little man?" Gage uttered with an equally dark and threatening voice. "Even with that scrawny girl and her bow, you're no match for me." He held his club, more than ready to beat the crap out of Marcus. Marcus shrugged, "Maybe not. But have you met our friend Grao?" "Hmm?" Gage replied.

At that moment Marcus ducked, and an extremely large and muscular orc horizontally flew over him from behind. Grao had run at Gage full speed! -and sailing over Marcus, tackled Gage as though he were diving into the sea. The green pile of muscles crushed and entwined around the tattooed pile of muscles, and both entered a wrestling match like no other. Between these two seven foot giants, it was to be the wrestling match of the century {Grao successfully grapples Gage}!

Marcus liked this. Mainly because he could stab Gage now and not worry so much about getting a club in the face. Yes, he liked that a lot; and began the stabbing {Marcus deals 12 damage to Gage; Skirmish bonus}. Kelden, too, joined in on this {Kelden deals 4 damage to Gage}.

***

Xubada, although he didn't grab Taisiya, beckoned her with a deep and primitive voice, "Tai-zah. Boss say to leave. 'E must go. Come." "No," she sternly replied. "I don't want him to get hurt; I don't want anyone to get hurt!" "Leave, now!" Alldyde commanded from beneath his dogpile. "No!" she replied again. "Dammit, why are women always so stubborn!?" said a flustered Alldyde. "NOW I SAY!"

Taisiya, with a great deal of hesitation, took a step back, and Xubada took a guarding position in front of her, keeping a sword point out against any who might try to pass him.

Alldyde glared into the eyes of Mikael on top of him, who was trying to hold the sorcerer down; but Alldyde didn't try to throw him off. Instead, he fiercely grabbed both of Mikael's wrists. "BURN ELF!" He spat. And started laughing madly. Alldyde's hands began to glow a lurid red, and suddenly, fire poured out from them and over Mikael, traveling up his sleeves and over his whole damn body. Mikael knew he needed a tan; but this wasn't the way he wanted to get it {Alldyde deals 31 damage to Mikael}.

The Finale

The small victory of dropping the arcane man was quickly burned away, pun intended, when Mikael burst into flames, somehow not letting go. Such determination... Such pain... Imbellem could feel it as it it was him that was on fire, he knew where he was going next. However between the two, he saw grao wrestling with Gage on the ground directly in the middle of the two...

Imbellem quickly turned around, "Ed" He posed to the solider, "If you would, go over and cover Styus, or move up to help us, your choice, But he should not be left alone. But do not. Harm Him." He stated sternly. It was implied that if he attacked Steyus, he would be in rather deep trouble with a certain cleric...

"Gage!" Imbellem shouted as he walked toward the wrestling match, weapon drawn, "Alldyde is down, soon he will be no more, Barnett saw the error of his ways and has decided to aid us- well Lady Jacqueline more specifically, please sir I urge you, I apologize for any pain we may have caused you, and i will personally tend to you on the even that you join Barnett again. Help us take out this man who poses as a king. Together we can all do it! You wont have to be under his thumb, you can regain your honor and fight alongside the blood of Red Jack again! Please! If you dont agree to my request, im sorry but you will have to be dealt with with the same prejudice as Alldyde. Im not sure if you care about the people of the city, in fact i rather doubt it; but Barnett sees Alldyde for what he truly is. A snake. Poisoning everything he touches, including you. Join us! End his enchantments and spells, and we will set things straight. Frankly, I dont care what you do once hes gone; but he will die, and you dont have to. Help Barnett, us and Jacqueline defeat him, and you will be spared, and we can forget all the bad that occurred already. Friends? Unlikely. Enemies, not a chance. Do you agree?" Imbellem was near the grappled man now, should he disagree to this simple request, Imbellem would be the first to strike. He was hoping he would be open to his words... but hope was all he had. This man was indeed a pirate, and even if he did agree, could turn around and attack at any time...

Imbellem prayed while he waited for Gages responce... prayed for life safety and the end of bloodshed...

quote:
"Abba father, I come before you again standing before this monolith of a man, attempting to get him to listen to reason, turn his back on evil and join us. Lord, Its a long shot with my simple tongue, I ask that you please open his mind to reason. Help him see that alldyde is the true enemy, not us. Lord, things are going well, alldyde is down, but Mikael has been severely wounded. I ask that you simply guide the hands of the men in the heat of battle now. May they strike him down before any other lifes are put in jeapordy. Im moving as fast as I can, please sustain their lives until i make it there for your word to pour over their wounds, healing their pain. That is all I ask lord. The end of pain. I am sorry for Alldyde's soul, no man deserves death, but this must done. For the lives of many. May all of them rest in peace... he is evil, and must be removed from this mortal plane. Im sure you will speak more sense to him than I ever could. Preserve us, keep us safe, we are so close to our goal of ending tyranny Lord. Thank you. In you holy name I say: Amen"

The Finale

I try desperately to catch my breath. Every deep inhale I try to take fills my lungs with smoke. Coughing, barely able to open my eyes back up after such searing pain. "Not today." I whisper to myself as I try take grasp of consciousness, of life itself. I gather all the strength and will I have left and open my eyes. Pushing aside the trembling in my body. I try to realism myself from his hands that attempted to consume me I'm fire. The air is finally clear of smoke and burning. I take a deep breath in. I look Alldyde dead in the eyes. "Not today!" I shout, almost command, as I attempt grab Alldyde and pin him to the cold floor. "You will be the one who greets death this day!"

{I attempt to pin and cover Alldyde mouth.}

The Finale

Internal Thoughts and Post:
It suddenly hit me, square in the face of my mind...  I saw Barnett run past, but I thought, what is he up to? Even if he is on our side?  He could get to Alldyde, I am sure that guy has caused Barnett all sorts of consternation through all this.  He never seemed like the upfront kind of fighter to me though...  Wait. I KNOW WHAT HE IS GOING TO DO...  Taisiya likely will not see it coming, and if Alldyde is not already dead, I know he will not do a thing to us if Barnett plays his turn out like I think he will.  I just hope Taisiya can still walk out alive after this, unless she would become our new adversary for what we are about to do, what we must do.  I know she may be in love, but she was a fool to fall in love with a man such as this. A man who's very soul is wickedness.  I have but 1 recourse for men such as this, utter destruction.  Mercy's place in this case, is not for the enemy, but for our friends that they would hurt.  It is my duty that I not let that happen.  My very purpose, is to protect those I care about, protect the innocent and virtuous, from the manipulation and insanity of people like this.  I still ask myself... will Taisiya become the next Alldyde from witnessing this?

I witness Mikael burst into flames, and the anger in me is only fanned into an inferno. "NOOO!" I raise my weapon to strike as furiously as I can at Alldyde.  I must strike NOW and take full advantage of Mikael's tenacity. Holding on for his very own dear life as well as holding on for all our own. "EVERYONE ATTACK ALLDYDE! WE MUST HELP MIKAEL! HE IS HOLDING ON TO LIFE. NOW YOU GET OVER HERE AND HOLD ON FOR MIKAEL! KILL ALLDYDE! EVERYONE ATTACK!! KILL ALLDYDE! GRAO, HOLD ON TO GAGE AND DONT LET GO!"

I strike in anger at Alldyde knowing I will give Alldyde no mercy for what he has done, no mercy for what they all have done, all the wicked will pay... In a furious roar I raise my guisarme to rip out Alldyde's very heart.  My fury boils like scalding water whish I wish to pour forth from my soul through my very weapon into Alldydes heart. "REPAY THE WICKED FOR THEIR DEEDS LORD!" {I use Smite Evil}

While I recite the entire applicable passage of Psalm 94 in a practiced recitation, I maneuver my new mount immediately and expertly to unleash another wave of assaults.  {Ride Check: Success, direct with Knees}  This time I seek to crush Alldyde's skull with the 2000 lbs of Muscle, Sinew, and FURY from the powerful beast upon which I ride.  "Alldyde! hear me! ...God will smash the heads of his enemies, crushing the skulls of those who love their guilty ways. Psalm 68:19 YOU ARE HIS ENEMY! YOU ARE MY ENEMY"  If I could, I would breath fire from my very nostrils to consume him.  As an extension of my self, my Warhorse raises both hooves to crush Alldyde... {Ride Check success (Hoof 1 and 2 attack)} Yet, I am unable to maneuver my stallion to bite him again, this lack of saddle is becoming increasingly a source of frustration {Ride Check Failure (Bite Attack)}

Recited Passage:
quote:
{I know this is long, but it all applied so well to this post, so I included the whole chapter.  I recite it all as I unleash my series of attacks and attack attempts at Alldyde.}
Psalm 94 NIV
1 The Lord is a God who avenges.
O God who avenges, shine forth.
2 Rise up, Judge of the earth;
pay back to the proud what they deserve.
3 How long, Lord, will the wicked,
how long will the wicked be jubilant?
4 They pour out arrogant words;
all the evildoers are full of boasting.
5 They crush your people, Lord;
they oppress your inheritance.
6 They slay the widow and the foreigner;
they murder the fatherless.
7 They say, 'The Lord does not see;
the God of Jacob takes no notice.'
8 Take notice, you senseless ones among the people;
you fools, when will you become wise?
9 Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?
Does he who formed the eye not see?
10 Does he who disciplines nations not punish?
Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge?
11 The Lord knows all human plans;
he knows that they are futile.
12 Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord,
the one you teach from your law;
13 you grant them relief from days of trouble,
till a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not reject his people;
he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,
and all the upright in heart will follow it.
16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked?
Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?
17 Unless the Lord had given me help,
I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.
18 When I said, 'My foot is slipping,'
your unfailing love, Lord, supported me.
19 When anxiety was great within me,
your consolation brought me joy.
20 Can a corrupt throne be allied with you—
a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?
21 The wicked band together against the righteous
and condemn the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord has become my fortress,
and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
23 He will repay them for their sins
and destroy them for their wickedness;
the Lord our God will destroy them.

After knocking the wizard to the ground I move a bit to the left ( D18). I lift my axe high and swing it at aldyde while he is compromised. I then come back with my shield.

Lady Jacqueline shifted her attention from Gage to Alldyde and immediately acted. With Mikael risking everything, she dropped her bow and drew her rapier. Charging forward (to C18, for a sneak attack), she plunges her rapier straight into Alldyde's flesh.

The Finale

Ashes fell from the blackened edges of Mikael's clothing, charred bits that floated down as gentle as could be. They disintegrated upon touching anything at all, on contacting the floor beneath or a stray weapon or a limb in the air. The elf was terribly wounded. Through smoke and stinging eyes and dizzying pain, he struggled against the sorcerer beneath him; his options were plain: either obtain victory here and now, or die.

He exerted everything his body was capable of; he gripped the arms of Alldyde like shackles, and pinned him to the floor; if this didn't end now, unconsciousness would take him from sheer exhaustion. But using that desperate kind of strength, he slammed Alldyde low and held him in a vice like rigor mortis {Mikael pins Alldyde ~ Natural 20}.

His allies knew all too well what kind of situation this was, and came to his aid in force. As Mikael held down the spellcaster with his waning breath, they attacked, feeling urgency in every moment. The world itself slowed down as each fraction of a second gained the importance of hours. Adwonus chopped downward with his orcen double axe, bring both weighted heads into the exposed parts of Alldyde's body {Adwonus deals 13 & 7 damage to Alldyde}. And although Herr Johannes missed a bold jab with his polearm, his steed stomped on the bound foe in a flurry of hooves {Mount deals 10 & 11 damage to Alldyde}; Marcus dashed behind the rest like a nimble cat and sent his longsword into the fray {Marcus deals 6 damage to Alldye ~ Skirmish}; Jacqueline charged, throwing her bow to the floor, and pounced on the sorcerer, a lioness from more wild lands {Jacqueline deals 8 damage to Alldyde ~ Sneak Attack}; and Dwalin brought down his shield like one ends a dying enemy, with its bottom edge into the neck {Dwalin deals 5 damage to Alldyde}.

Finally, Dwalin yelled in a wild voice an eerily familiar phrase. "I want the kill!" And heaved his axe overhead, and into a swing which landed into Alldyde's forehead, and sundered it {Dwalin deals 23 damage to Alldyde ~ Critical Hit}. It split in twain. The room entered a stunned silence, for everyone stopped fighting. The unthinkable had happened. [Combat Rounds Disabled]

Heal {Imbellem} ~ Alldyde was dead.

Gage dropped his club and starred at the scene in disbelief; and seeing this relinquishment, Imbellem restrained from attacking him. Xubada, too, let his scimitar fall to the ground.

Wide-eyed, Taisiya fell to her knees and gazed at the body in silence. Slowly she crawled close to it, the adventurers letting her pass out of some piteous feeling; she touched Alldyde's motionless arm in a gentle way, though she did not cry. Jacqueline joined beside her and set a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You know it had to be done, right? He was planning to hurt a lot of people." Taisiya seemed aloof, as though she were in a wistful daydream, or remembering how things were long, long ago in a memory only she could see. "I know," she replied distant and melancholy. "Somehow, I always knew his choices would lead him to this. But. . ." her voice grew tender, "he was the only one who understood. . ." She ended there, and buried her face into Jacqueline's hip for respite; after all this, all that had happened, they were still friends.

The battle was over.

Gage and Xubada surrendered and were seized. And finally, Steyus came out, as did Kelden, and they met in a group in the chamber center. One gathering now, they stood and studied the other; the adventurers watched in anticipation of what was to happen next. "What do we do now?" Darus asked of Kelden, looking at him for guidance. Steyus answered for him. "We make a decision." "Yes," Kelden agreed.

Steyus looked old, older than his years would indicate. He spoke in the voice of someone who reflected this recently acquired age. "I'm tired," he began, sighing. "I accepted this position only two years ago, and in that time I've borne more stress than I'd care to bear in twenty years. I'm tired. And I have a mind to resign. I don't know why anyone would ever want this job; and if my heart doesn't kill me, a knife in it from some pirate or disgruntled noble will." He flicked his gaze up to Kelden. "But I can't give it to you either. This would be irresponsible on my part."

Kelden was thinking hard, and after a moment replied, "I, too, am tired. And although I started my quest with best intentions, I couldn't see the manipulations going on around me, to my shame. I wish to aid this city still, but, I fear, that when it becomes known that my original claim to being appointed by King Owendir was false, the work of forgery – I do not know what will happen." Steyus lightly nodded, "Then let us take things out of our hands, and put them in that of the citizens here."

Steyus turned to face the adventurers, "You have seen the city from more sides than most ever shall, from our nobility to our poor, from our pirates to our leaders. What do you think we should do? You know what we are asking of you. Decide the next government of Herrod!"

The Finale

Discussion
quote:
Lady Jacqueline - Politics were never my strong suit. But... A representative parliament may do well for the country. One voice cannot nor should not decide on his or her own. Rather, a group of members decide amongst a leader to help as advisors-- especially in the case of there being magic. But responsibilities are easier shared than alone.

Imbellem - [Rolls eyes] Ugh... Politics. Everyone smiles until they’re in charge and never pull through with what they said they would do... I heard you both say you were tired. Do either of you even WANT to be duke?

Lady Jacqueline - I would if it means keeping an eye out for my people.

Imbellem - However this goes, things need to change. spread power, much like Jacqueline said. Too much power for one person would result in... Well, all this all over again.

Lady Jacqueline - But I can't speak for them.

Imbellem - [With a cocky grin] You'd look good in a foofy dress.

Lady Jaqueline - [Smirks] I would feel like a cupcake.

Mikael - I agree; I think some sort of council would be more suited. Spread the power and make corruption more difficult

Imbellem - Was there a sort of council before all this garbage? Perhaps they would be willing to listen to that method

Lady Jaqueline - This IS it. [Gestures to Steyus.] We kind of... Took his advisors apart. And "tired" him out. But he looks like a changed man, after seeing... [Gestures with rigid hands to look like Alldyde.] He is wise to look to us for help, after being exposed to quite a lot. This is quite the new chapter being written. [Mumbles and lightly chortles to self about the word, "quite."]

Adwonus - I have a solution.

Lady Jaqueline - Your proposal?

Adwonus - Steyus is too old to lead. Delcor on the other hand cannot rule ad his entire cause was a lie.

Imbellem - No offence Steyus of course.

Adwonus - There already is an established government I would say that whoever is below Steyus takes his place while Delcor is made captain of the city Garrison due to his pull with the people and prowess This will keep the two sides in balance.

Lady Jaqueline - I also have a proposition that could side well with that.

Adwonus - Meanwhile the king should be informed of the situation so a new official ruler will be put in place.

Imbellem - Oh yeah, can’t forget about him... Where was he during all this war anyway. Jerk.

Adwonus - Before this happens Steyus's successor will be temporary. The king was far away

Lady Jaqueline - [Turns to Johannes - .] I don't know how, but your stance makes you a noble. I know nothing about your past, aside from I recognize it as a noble. You order like one, too. How would you feel about a title in Herrod?

Herr Johannes - Technically that would be the correct way to go with the current government system: The King technically should decide who the next ruler is to be. It seems like he should access what has happened and make a choice... however, how do we know he is not influenced or rather coerced by the pirates in his decision?

Herr Johannes - I wanted a moment to breath and celebrate after that battle, but [maybe this is occurring after we have secured the prisoners and caught out breath]

Herr Johannes - Also, how do we know that Alldyde was not lying about the forged documents? He does seem adept at lying.

Adwonus - Look the king is not under the pirates pull he's not anywhere near here plus the leader is dead. Alldyde was telling the truth and you know it.

Imbellem - I agree on celebration, and unfortunately as much as I hate this sort of thing... this town needs someone to put the pieces back together

Adwonus - The rebels and guard should be made into a joint military.

Imbellem - Now’s the best time with lack of pirate influence.

Lady Jaqueline - We can check them. You cannot know a fact to be true until we see it.

Adwonus - Even Kelden knows he was wrong.

Lady Jaqueline - Shush.

Herr Johannes - I suppose we might as well get this taken care of now. No matter who is eventually chosen, we need a leader to take over until that time. During a time like this. This is when the necessity of a single leader with advisors is superior to a council: during a war like condition. I am surprised Kelden conceded so easily after all we worked for honestly.

Adwonus - It happens.

Lady Jaqueline - Marcus, my brother, could make an excellent temporary leader. [Gentle smile.] He protected us, even when he was about a few feet from death.

Adwonus - I don't agree

Herr Johannes - I do think there is a lot of merit to your suggestion though Adwonus - . (Combining the forces) but can it be done so rapidly? With them just fighting against each other?  Kelden, what do you think? Could your men handle that?

Lady Jaqueline - Temporary, Adwonus . Temporary.

Adwonus - I think a member of the government should be in charge and work with Kelden to make peace.

Lady Jaqueline - True.

Adwonus - The guards won’t listen to Marcus They don't know or care who he is.

Mikael - Who would they listen to then?

Lady Jaqueline - Well, then, Marcus should work with Kelden.

Adwonus - A member of the city government. Steyus wasn't the entire government, you all realize

Herr Johannes -  Did Steyus have a successor?

Adwonus - Steyus would most definitely have a successor. It’s a brutal world it would be foolish not to have one.

Lady Jaqueline - I don't feel comfortable assigning any one person by themselves to lead without a group to go with. I wouldn't want Marcus on his own, but he has dealt with politics more than I.

Lady Jaqueline - Why don't we take this on? We're an odd bunch, but... We keep each other in check. Whether you'll admit it.

Adwonus - I don't admit that.

Lady Jaqueline - Good for you.

Herr Johannes - Hmm, there is a point to that, at least temporarily, if the city accepted us for now... we can't just usurp authority.

Adwonus - I think we are too divided. Two of you almost killed me once. [Chuckling]

Lady Jaqueline - Hrm.

Mikael - You're over that by now right? Heh.

Adwonus - Kind of over it but I'm not happy about the city watch being murdered for a lie

Imbellem - Me? Bha, what would we run. Some of you maybe, but some of us are not fit for any sort of council.

Adwonus - I think we need official people trained in governance to cover until the king makes a decision.

Lady Jaqueline -  – That is why I thought Johannes -  and Marcus were a good choice.

Herr Johannes - Some of us have political experience, Steyus, Kelden, Marcus, Myself

Lady Jaqueline - That's a good four-fold balance.

Adwonus - I don't trust this. We are not meant to be in charge here

Herr Johannes - Unless Steyus and Kelden absolutely refuse, I think they might need to take over together until one has the luxury to resign... in the middle of battle is not the time, we need to unite the people of Herrod against our true enemy, especially if we just declared independence from pirate rule.

Dwalin - I agree.

Adwonus - We need to rebuild and undo the damage of the rebellion.

Herr Johannes - I think you all (including Gage and Barnett) know that Alldyde caused a lot of problems.

Lady Jaqueline - We can do that as a team. But we need rulers in place.

Imbellem - Forcing the city guard and rebels to work together may end up in a bit more blood than you’re anticipating...

Herr Johannes - That is why I think Kelden and Steyus must lead by example and work together to lead the city.

Adwonus - Another issue what will happen if the rebels learn that Kelden’s claims were false?

Imbellem - They're probably killing each other right now.

Herr Johannes - Then they personally can appoint successors if they wish to resign, and a separate council could be established to represent the people.

Lady Jaqueline - So we're at least agreed that a group needs to help a leadership position. I still think all of us would help.

Adwonus - We need a truce

Lady Jaqueline - We need leaders to appoint for a truce...

Adwonus - Steyus and Kelden have to make the truce then we can appoint new leaders.

Herr Johannes - Kelden and Steyus must make a public statement together about how Alldyde was the true enemy and how we must not let him continue in death to make us attack one another, when we need each other.

Lady Jaqueline - Agreed.

Adwonus - We still need to be ready to brace for the impact when people here the truth.Kelden’s men died for it and some people killed for what was a lie.

Lady Jaqueline - I think that they, too, will be tired and ready for peace.

Adwonus - Even you, Johnnas, killed under false pretenses that you were unaware of.

Lady Jaqueline - As did you. We're handling it well.

Adwonus - I killed one man for an actual reason.

Imbellem - It seems to be our best and only option. Blame Alldyde for all this nonsense, truce with each other, and wait from word from the king to assign a new ruler

Adwonus - I was ordered to.

Mikael - Alldyde was the enemy remember.

Lady Jaqueline - Back to assigning leadership first BEFORE truce talks...

Imbellem – Let’s not hash out personal pasts again. Thats not important.

Adwonus - And by doing that I eliminated a third faction from fighting in the streets my conscious is clear.

Lady Jaqueline - What's past has passed... I would rather move forward right now.

Imbellem - And then we killed Alldyde. We all deserve a ribbon.

Lady Jaqueline - [Rolls eyes]

Imbellem - Shall we continue with pressing matters?

Lady Jaqueline - Yes.

Adwonus - No ribbons od tokens. We need to assemble a council and military.

Lady Jaqueline - Kelden and Steyus need new leaders. And a council with them.

Imbellem - Both Kelden and Steyus have men under them, once peace is established, they can appoint their seats at council.

Adwonus - Yes

Imbellem - And women. Forgot about Elora for a moment there

Lady Jaqueline - [Eyebrow arch.]

Adwonus - What if we made a council of threes.

Imbellem - [grin]

Lady Jaqueline - Or seven.

Imbellem - One ruler with three choices? So 4 from each side, including Kelden and Steyus?

Adwonus - Three factions to be represented merchants, craftsman, governors, and military

Herr Johannes – Adwonus, quit acting so high and mighty. You killed Jaqueline's step-father and Marcus father. You need to quit acting like you are superior to us. Now, we need to stay on topic

Adwonus - They will balance each other. How many children did those guards have paladin?

Lady Jaqueline - ANYway......

Imbellem - Lord have mercy...

Lady Jaqueline - Amen. So.

Imbellem - Kelden and Steyus pick three of their best to fill council seats.

Lady Jaqueline - Steyus and Kelden both sound like they're asking us to appoint the next leaders.

Imbellem - peace is established, both sides balance each other and keep in check. Is this fair?

Adwonus – Yes, but we need to look at the options.

Lady Jaqueline - It almost sounded like they were appointing US as the next leaders.

Imbellem - Who is left to appoint? -pft-

Adwonus - This problem started with poor economy.

Imbellem - I’m a busy man, I’m not putting on a bloody pea coat.

Lady Jaqueline - Nor I a foofy dress.

Adwonus - Herrod relies so much on piracy for wealth that is how they gained power.

Imbellem – Don’t go where I think you're going Adwonus.

Lady Jaqueline - We can help leadership by reporting what we find of the city.

Adwonus - This is why we should work with the mercantile classes in government.

Imbellem - Peace needs to be established first... and then rebuilding

Adwonus – Definitely.

Imbellem - And then trade routes with other isles perhaps, but no pirates.

Herr Johannes - I think we do need 3 groups represented, the merchants (Larlben), the current government (Steyus) and Kelden's group. We must not only have a council though. Times like this demand a singular lead man, or at least a team of 2.

Adwonus - The lead man needs to be kept in check.

Imbellem - But that’s what got us here. Too much power for one man and he was influenced by Alldyde.

Adwonus – There’s a power vacuum right now

Imbellem - It needs to be a city for the voice of the people,

Lady Jaqueline - I will find my place, likely, amongst the pirates to restore some order there. They didn't normally behave in this manner until my father, Red Jack was taken over. I'll do what I can, there.

Adwonus - Still pirates. Keep them from the city and let them murder and pillage as they see fit elsewhere.

Imbellem - With Barnett and Gage still around, I suppose Jacqueline will be safe...but I don’t like the webs they weave.

Adwonus - Nor do I. The sea rats can't be trusted

Lady Jaqueline - Murder wasn't a part of game... Though bargaining and gambling were.

Adwonus – Sure, of course pirates never kill.

Lady Jaqueline - I didn't say that.

Adwonus - Also easy to bargain when you got a sword at a man's neck.

Herr Johannes - That's why I say we put Kelden and Steyus back in power, have them make public statements asap so the fighting stops and reunite the people to face the common enemy, tell the people the truth... Alldyde was the enemy. Isn't it time the people heard the truth? Then we establish the council of 3, 6, or 9 to rule with the leaders (Kelden and Steyus) and Kelden and Steyus appoint their successors after the battle. Even if they chose us to succeed them right now, the people know Kelden and Steyus and will listen to them before us.

Lady Jaqueline - Thank you for jumping down my throat. [Folds arms.]

Adwonus - We make the two pawns kiss and make up.

Lady Jaqueline - I'm offering to dissolve the poor habits of pirates by bringing back the tradition of gambling and taking them elsewhere.

Adwonus - There is another issue

Imbellem - I love how they ask our advice when we can’t even agree on one thing for ourselves. We're a duck with one leg swimming in circles here.

Adwonus - There must be an expedition sent to tell the king what happened.

Herr Johannes - If the pirates want to be part of this, they will have to obey the law like every other group. The merchants don't make their gain by murder, or stealing (not that they are perfect, but still)

Adwonus - By definition there is no place for pirates.

Herr Johannes - True, do you think we should tell the king? I think others might be able to do just as well.

Adwonus - The king must know.

Herr Johannes - The pirates could have a place as law abiding citizens (thus likely being absorbed in a merchant class)

Lady Jaqueline - I'm just going to zone out, then. I've decided my quest to steer the pirates towards a more civilized world the way Red Jack had. Barnett needs to show me where he is anyway.

Adwonus - The pirates should be either banned from the free cities or conscripted. They would make an excellent navy if funded proper.

Herr Johannes - Good point. Hmm, I suppose we might need 2 councils... 1 would not represent each council’s population, but that is a detail for later.

Imbellem - I can’t add anything diplomatically to this mess here... But we need the fighting to stop, and I will try to collect as many those with the ability to heal and tend to the wounded. Maybe a rebel being healed by a guard medic may help build ties. ‘Cuz the people we are trying to find leadership for right now are dying.

Lady Jaqueline - Speaking of... Could you pray with me to heal me?

Imbellem - Of course.

Adwonus - Pray later we need a solution lads and lasses

Lady Jaqueline - Thanks, Imbellem.

Herr Johannes - I think we can do some of the leg work, we need to go through the city and tell people about the truce.

Adwonus - I say we get an honor guard of rebels and guards to accompany us and Steyus and Kelden to the streets.

Herr Johannes - I believe Kelden and Steyus have made a truce... now we both share power and in a sense, everyone wins.

Lady Jaqueline - Public truce, you mean?

Adwonus – Yes.

Herr Johannes – Yes.

Lady Jaqueline - Okay. From there, they appoint leaders? And if so, whom?

Adwonus - Councilors and successors.

Lady Jaqueline - Along with those among us with political backgrounds.

Herr Johannes - I think we have decided then. Steyus and Kelden, tired or not, have to issue a public statement about Alldyde being the true enemy, and apologize about the wrongs done. We all fought in ignorance, and as terrible as the results may be, we must work together to face the true enemy, before he wins. (Make people see, it was not guards or rebels who killed each other, but Alldyde through his lies, like a demon... so many lies).

Imbellem - I agree.

Lady Jaqueline - ...King Dwalin. He seems like a strong leader. [Wink]

Adwonus - Eh I think he'd be bored.

Herr Johannes - Yes, and we can make them aware of our background or availability. They definitely have experience with us. We can talk to them.

Lady Jaqueline - No one questions one of such strength. [Smirks.]

Imbellem - King Dwalin... Oh goodness. The city would be in flames within hours.

Herr Johannes - And we need the merchants represented in the council, because the economic crisis that helped fan this flame must be overcome and the merchants play a major role in that.

Adwonus - As I said.

Herr Johannes - Exactly, I was just reiterating what you said in a summary of our results.

merchants need to fill the role of the pirates

Adwonus - I propose that we send myself, Pyyra, Zin and another to journey to the king with the news Pyyra and I are still civil servants.

Herr Johannes - So, do the merchants have a disproportionate seat on the council, or do they get a leader to rule with Steyus and Kelden? Larlben Sr is not here to speak for them

Imbellem - There needs to be an iron fist for lawbreaking should the pirates stay... They cannot be allowed to work as shifty as they did, but they shouldn’t be exiled. They are living beings after all.

Adwonus - Living beings who made bad choices. My expedition could return with an army.

Imbellem - Hence the harsh punishment for breaking law. Hope you move fast... we need one. The city is in prime position to be overrun by an external force in its weakened state.

Herr Johannes - The army is nearby already, or do you mean additional? Would the King send one with the reality of the pirate’s influence on his position? Remember, the army went north on false orders from Alldyde.

Adwonus - I could find the nearby army but the king needs news.

Imbellem – What about messenger pigeons? Fly faster than you walk.

Herr Johannes - He does, but I do not trust he is not under pirate influence. We are just 1 out of 8 territories, all of which influenced by the pirates

Adwonus - Perhaps but more vulnerable.

Imbellem - Much more.

Herr Johannes - He being the king.

Adwonus - How are all controlled by the pirates? Where did you hear this?

Herr Johannes - They all have similar shadow governments to my knowledge, Alldyde was only 1 of the council of 8 pirates. Were you not aware of this?

Adwonus - But who told you.

Herr Johannes - I believe we heard it from multiple sources.  Overheard it from the pirates, Kelden talked about it... I thought this was common knowledge?

Adwonus - Or a common rumor.

Herr Johannes - Larlben talked about it too I believe.

Adwonus - If the king was really under pirate control, then we couldn't tell him.

Herr Johannes - I don't know that the King is, but I believe he could be influence.

Adwonus - If this is true, then we need to reach the army first before anything else. Then we'd bolster the defenses of the city.

Imbellem - That is true.

Herr Johannes - Herrod is the wealthiest of the territories with the city being the jewel of this country. The territory immediately around the King (Deon's Rise) is a 9th territory I believe. We need the army of this city, which went north... we can trust their allegiance to Herrod. The major one could be riddled with pirate officers and members...

Adwonus - I'll leave to find the army then as soon as peace is established. Not alone of course.

Herr Johannes - For all I know the King does not even maintain a major army, the pirates might have disowned any federal type of military for fear for all I know. So you mean the army of Herrod?  Of our province right?

Adwonus - Yes. I can track a man, why not an army.

Herr Johannes - Oh I don't doubt you could, I just was making sure the group you meant was the provincial army, not the King's army.

Adwonus - I say we establish a truce, and I put together a party to find the army

Herr Johannes - So I think we are decided, have we covered everything? Do we believe the Merchants need a leader and council seats or just the council seats?

Adwonus - Merchants, military, and government. I'd say we just force the pirates into being a crude navy

Herr Johannes - And the rest of us go into the city to inform the people of the truce and the true enemy

Imbellem - Considering you can put a leash on a beast like that.

Adwonus – True.

Herr Johannes - It is likely up to Jaqueline.

Adwonus - A leash made of gold will hold.

Imbellem - Fair point, but isn’t that what got Steyus in trouble in the first place.

Adwonus - no I think it was reliance on the pirates stealing

Herr Johannes - But as Roman and Chinese history taught us... you are only funding your own enemy to be destroyed by them later

Adwonus - Either we buy them off or kill them.

Imbellem - Or offer them jobs. Or force them to leave. It will take weeks of rainn to wash the streets of blood as it is. We don’t need more.

Adwonus - If we pay them to be a mercenary navy they could go for it. Let them pillage as they want against enemy kingdoms or states, but we own them.

Herr Johannes - Jacqueline will likely have to be the new pirate leader with Barnett's help.

Imbellem - Or use said money and screw us over.

Adwonus - If their leader is one of us then we own them.

Herr Johannes - If Marcus was interested, I would say he could represent them, but he seems uninterested. (Represent the merchants)

Adwonus - He's a warrior not a coin handler.

Imbellem - As it seems trapper, you seem to be the most likely of us to handle any sort of funds. But you are off to gather an army... what do you suggest.

Herr Johannes - So, then do the Merchants only get council seats I assume? And obviously the leader would do well to help and listen to them. Is there anything else we need to decide?

Adwonus - Yes, but the merchants need to figure that one out. I wouldn't be best to handle coin lad. I'm meant for the wilds.

Herr Johannes - Yes, and when I say merchants, it is for the most part meaning Larlben's faction. Adwonus -  is more a representative of Steyus...

Adwonus - Seeing as I've worked for him for a few years.

Herr Johannes - Yeah, and I meant it would have been Kelden, Steyus, and Larlben as leaders otherwise

That is why I was asking if another should lead in Larlben's place

Adwonus – Perhaps. Marcus could lead but only if he wants.

Herr Johannes - Exactly my point, if he wants to, else he seemed uninterested... it seems like the merchants would deserve a leader to help, but perhaps a larger place on the council would be an equal compensation?

Adwonus - Probably. Or they could elect their own leader

The Finale

It is finished... the words of my savior echoed in my mind.  Seeing Alldyde's lifeless frame on the ground solidified it to me.  It is still hard to believe.  This man was the source of all this evil, and object of Taisiya's love, and now he is dead.  I still am somewhat unsure, even with the ax in his skull.  "Men we need to burn his body and erase his memory from this community.  There must be no way for him to return.  Who knows what deals he has made with hell for his abilities."  I turn to speak to his ruined frame on the ground, and speak to him as if he can still hear me.  "I AM NOT AFRAID, and now you are DEAD you wretched, wicked, founder of evil.  Now you are the one burning.  You did not heed the warnings of God and now you are dead, you are dead, you are DEAD! You thought you could have victory, but God secured it for us long ago.  You piece of filth, you are dead, you hear me! Dead! It is your death you saw, not ours!" Wrested a moment in my mind from my hatred... "And I must thank God for His faithfulness. He was with us brothers, He saw us through! Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I WILL FEAR NO EVIL!  AM I RIGHT MEN!  WE HAVE THE VICTORY! HAZZAH!  HAZZAH!  HAZZAH! VICTORY AGAINST ALL EARTHLY ODDS! HAZZAH!"
Elation fills my souls as I look around to see the results, Alldyde dead, Gage and Xubada surrendered, Taisiya returned to her senses, and every single one of us and our allies alive and stable.  "It is exactly as I prayed..." I speak to myself quietly, in joyful amazement.  [Private to Lady Jacqueline Raynelde: "Jacqueline, it is exactly as I prayed, every detail, every request, answered... just like the burning building, God said, 'I will not leave you comfortless or orphans, I will come to you!'"]  A tear threatens to come to my eyes.
Still breathing hard from the battle, my mind is almost in another place.  The sweat still drips from my brow and the smell of burnt hair and flesh hangs in the air... but more conscious am I of our victory.  I return to the immediate necessities of combat- such a clear point of focus at all times.

"Sound off!  Is anyone injured mortally?  Imbellem, we need to find this out ASAP!  Everyone sound off and check yourself.  Report to Imbellem your status."

I then speak to, the now dead, Alldyde's followers:
"Barnett, you made a good choice... we will honor our word.
Gage and Xubada, I demand your unconditional surrender.  You never turned to fight for us.  You stopped when you saw the battle turn.  Lie on the ground face down.  Edgarren!, Gage!  Remove their weapons and tie them up!  We can hear your explanations of why you did not turn later.   For now we need to take care of what Steyus and Kelden have said.
"

We then all have a very long chat...

"I still am a little unsure of Alldyde's claims about the faux documents... he lied so far, why would he not lie about this to keep us off balance. Maybe, it ought to be verified.

Kelden!, Steyus! I believe we have come to a consensus. It is as follows:

1.  You both shall lead the city, until you can choose successors, if you so desire:
You must, the city listens to you two.  If one of us were to take over it would not be the same.  You both must make an immeditate statement to end hostilities.  Your men will listen to each of you respectively better than anyone else.  You may be tired, but this is the burden of leadership.  You must keep leading until the hostilities between us can be stopped and we can turn to face the true enemy: the pirates.
Just because Alldyde is dead, does not mean the threat is over.  The other members of the council of 8 will likely try to take possession of the Jewel of Herrod.  If we are to openly declare our freedom from the oppression, we must be ready to defend it ASAP.  Law and order is maintain through the iron fist to enforce it (I mean militarily, not through harsh laws against your own citizens).  Adwonus has volunteered to lead a rapid expedition to recover the Army to the north.  We need them as soon as possible for defense of the city.

2.  The economic vacuum must be filled through law abiding merchants, such as the Larlbens'.  Hostilities must end between your forces and his. This is not a request.  Little did everyone seem to realize, he was also waging economic war against the pirates.

3.  We will likely have to let the King know about these developments, but I am not sure we can trust much of what he says, because of the influence of the council of 8.  We might be on our own, until we can gather more strength in the other provinces to aid our cause.

4.  We need to form a council underneath the leaders.  Elected from members of the people, representing the merchants, farmers, military, nobles etc.  The merchants either need a large representation there, or need a separate leader equal to the 2 of you.  You both need to rule together and likely should divide up what areas you each are in charge of.  Leadership is a heavy burden, so why try to carry it all alone.  In times of war, you need to be there to take more direct control, where as in times of peace there is more room for the people to speak, and actively take a role in government.

5.  If you wish to choose a successor from one of us, some of us do have experience.  Such as myself, Dwalin, Marcus, and possibly more.  However, you must first make public statements to end the hostilities, before we lose more fighting men we need to face the pirates.

6.  Jacqueline has some serious clout with the pirates and may be able to convince them to be a sort of navy, one that would be willing to work with us to fight the other provinces if we let them have the loot they find.  This is not the best solution necessarily, but it must be an option explored.

7.  The rest of us, not going with Adwonus, need to help disseminate your declaration throughout he city to end hostilities.  Then we will be able to address defenses and offenses.

8.  This all needs to be written down and the people need to see it and be part of it.  This needs to be the law of the land.  That we have 1 or 2 councils as a legislative sort of branch for the city. 1 based on population, 1 based upon an equal number from each faction, perhaps 2 or 3 from each?  The leaders must come from the groups of the city represented by the 3 factions (1 from each) for the executive branch, unless the merchants do better as only a large representation in the council.  Lastly I would suggest a branch that maintains the just adherence to the new constitution, a judicial branch.

9.  I do think our help in defeating Alldyde would warrant some kind of position possibly, like related to the military, I am not sure about the others here, but I know I would be interested.  If nothing else, we could be employed as a special forces team.  We have unique martial skills.  The people listen to you 2, but again, I am not opposed to being a successor or otherwise somehow in charge.  I think honestly, for us to help defeat this enemy, yet walk away without any sort of lasting influence in this city would be out of place for me.  I dont mean to be arrogant, but I do think it would be warranted.  Do our actions not demonstrate our allegiance and devotion to Herrod?  We dont have to decide this now, but I think we need some sort of position of authority for the purpose of the conclusion of this battle.

Everyone! Was there anything else I missed?

This is a great victory for Herrod and a great day for the people.  Though the enemy meant it for evil, we can now use it for a great step forward toward freedom and value of human life.  A government much more resistant to control or corruption can be put in place.  We must also realize, this was a battle we won, but it may mean the beginning of a new war.  We have openly declared our freedom from the pirates.  Let us now walk in that liberty which was purchased in blood.

The Finale

Imbellem relished in the moment. Over impossible odds it seems, they had won and not lost a soul. Well, on their side.

After hearing Johannes' orders, he gave a simple nod and stood facing the group. "Those most wounded, come to me, I will do what I can to aid in your pain. As soon as we are done here however, I need to collect a group of healers and spread throughout the city... I can hear their wails from here, so lets finish this up in here and fix what we came here for. The people. I care little for politics, I shall leave the details to you."

With that closing statement, imbellem waited for the wounded to come to him, so that he could pray over them and heal their wounds.

They had won... Still unbelievable.

Thank You God

Marcus wiped the blood from his blade before sheathing it. He then took it off his belt and threw it on Alldyde's body. He stared for a moment, contemplating the events that had led to this. After a moment, he took a breath and turned to leave. "I will help with the reconstruction as best I can. My father did not leave me without knowledge enough to take his place. But I have no longer the will in me to fight like this. Bad as he may have been, and dangerous, certainly, I can't celebrate being having killed a man. If you need my help with political or economical action, you can find me at my family's home. For anything else, find yourselves another sword arm."

And with that, Marcus Larlben strode from the chamber.

I wipe the blade of my axe off and place it on my belt. It feels good to have destroyed the evil at work against the city. Even though it's not my home, I am excited about the new beginning I can have here. "Well it seems you've said everything that needs to be said. I agree and I'll gladly help in restoring the city to glory. I have expertise in fighting, obviously (glances down at aldyde's split open head), and can help with fighting off any attackers.

Lady Jacqueline shifted and stared after her brother, the scar above her eyebrow curving strangely against what she normally expressed. Sorrow, and weary... She swallowed and nodded at various parts of the conversation, and inserting her own input. "I will find a way to steer the pirates towards a better path. They will respect me for my father's blood, and revere the idea of the navy." She sighed, concluding with that. "Barnett needs to show me where he is anyway."

The Finale

In reply to Lady Jacqueline Raynelde (msg # 185):

Trapper glanced around the room. Here he was, and he was still alive. Surprising really. The air stank of brain matter and loosened bowels, and the stones smelled burnt in some places. He sheathed his weapon, satisfied, at least somewhat with the outcome. If rumors were true, the sea rats were running the other city states, and Herod was weak and ripe for the pickings, somewhere in the north, a garrison stumbled about the wilds. The half orc knew that they would need these spears if Herod was to have a legitimate claim for it's independence. The half orc looked out the window a moment after the bickering to decide the city's fate. He never wanted this, but here he was. The half orc would go north, to find these fighters.

The Finale

Victory dawned on the adventurers. Slowly the magnitude of what they had accomplished for Herrod began to unveil and nourish them with a subtle pride. It was a long journey through the marsh of lies, filled with pitfalls and snaring weeds, all cleverly placed there by cleverer shadows. But now they had reached the other side and left the murky waters behind; now they stood on the banks of truth, safe and dry from the corruption which sought to drown them, along with all of Herrod's people. If it was not for their actions, the city would have fallen under the tyranny of pirate rule, an era from which its people might never have escaped, especially from the dark genius mind of Alldyde, and those like him. Whether or not the adventurers' actions were prudent or lucky or a fortunate blend of both, no one can say for certain; but doubtless they were needed. The adventurers, overcoming all trials, had saved this land from a dark fate; they had banished away the shadows of Herrod.

Standing in the throne room amidst the wake of their achievement, they shared their vision of Herrod's brightest future with Ivan Steyus and Kelden Delcor. Between them, their political ideas came to life and landed on attentive ears. Glancing at the younger Delcor, Steyus said, "This can be done. We can put aside the old ways and try something new; we can indeed create a council by which Herrod can be ruled from hereout. And hopefully by spreading this power, protect the city from pirate and other ignoble influences." Kelden nodded and replied, "Yes, and we will lead the city to this new form of government, and then let new faces and people take our place. If there should be a successor, better let the council decide whom, lest a decision by us renew old rivalries." "Then we have an agreement," answered Steyus. "The future has been decided."

Meanwhile, a couple of the adventurers meandered by Alldyde's body and cast distant eyes on the remains. All this strife came from a single architect, a person composed of malice and greed; it was both incredible and daunting what one man with ambition was capable of. Then their eyes drew back to their companions, and that daunting feeling changed to something warmer and inspiring. If one man was capable of this, then what achievements could a whole group of people realize, especially a group bound together by something as enduring as real friendship? It seemed limitless now.

Like the first day of spring, the buds and flowers of possibilities blossomed over the world in an invisible garden. There was a big world out there. Who knows what else they could change? And so, with all the courage they could muster, and together, they leapt with both feet into the future.

The Finale

A month passed since the day Alldyde was defeated. Later on that fateful day, Delcor, assisted by Darus and others, managed to calm the fighting in the streets; news had spread that the goal of their rebellion had been realized and a new form of government was to be instituted, a government for the people. The rebellion was brought to an end.

No word of Alldyde left the confines of that throne room, for who would believe that a single man, whom few had ever heard of, was the cause of all this strife? His memory was left to be forgotten.

But since that day, it's said the pirates suffered a great disaster within their own organization. Few knew exactly what happened; and so the common people knew this only by its effects, that the ominous presence and power of the pirates over Herrod's financial world had disappeared; but the adventurers knew why. Alldyde had invested incredible sums of money into the rebellion, and when his plan failed, the reward they expected from their sacrifice was lost; he had unintentionally driven the pirate organization into nigh bankruptcy. And so their followers and unification had crumbled apart, and this was the true source of their power. This was a blow from which the pirates of Herrod would never recover.

Freed from the suffocating debt and constraints the pirates had strategically forced on them, the government of Herrod was allowed to rebuild something of its long lost glory. Steyus and Delcor worked quickly to create a council, the new Great Council of Herrod, which would take on the responsibilities of governance. Elections were held for the first time in the various districts, and citizens readily chose representatives from among their number to stand for them. This was something new for the city. Nine were selected, including someone familiar to them...

***

Playing a game of chess, Imbellem and Mikael stared at the board intently; and based on the scrunched expression on Imbellem's face, it looked like he was losing. Not far from them Jacqueline was enjoying a cup of tea, and Dwalin and Johannes were having a serious discussion on the merits of certain armor pieces. Lady Riene entered and sat on the couch next to her daughter, carrying with her a tray of small cakes. They could not have been more at ease in Larlben Manor. Adwonus was now staying in a new residence not far from the castle and preparing for a journey north to Deon's Rise, escorting the newly appointed Councilor Rodinger. Things had been going well for them since the end of the rebellion.

Councilor Marcus Larlben entered the room, having returned from today's meeting; his dark green robes draped about him and made his appearance very different from the swordsman they knew. And seeing the smile on his face, they could tell he had good news. He told them that their reward for service to the city was finally ready. Dwalin hurriedly finished his ale, a nigh full glass of it, and still managed to leap to his feet as fast as the others; they excitedly all followed Marcus.

Together they traveled by carraige to the docks and stepped onto its breezy pier. Anchored ships rocked gently on the waves, shadowed by the nearby towers of the Twin Bridges, which mightily spanned across the Bay of Andor to the harbors of Lower Herrod on the other side. There they met several other Councilors, including Councilor Rodinger accompanied by Adwonus. They were a little saddened to not see Kelden Delcor, who had decided to depart the city and spend a little of his youth as a real adventurer, and giving Herrod time to rest from its ordeal in the process; nor did they see Steyus, who had retired to one of his family mansions on Carraway Island, to live the rest of now elderly life in ease. The adventurers felt their thoughts drift to other friends as well. Elora had been restored and now lived in a modest house near the Bazaar. And as for Taisiya, she had stayed with them for only another few days before giving a brief goodbye and departing once again; where she was now was a mystery. The thoughts of the adventurers returned to the present where the councilors welcomed them with pleasant smiles.

Councilor Rodigner, a fairly handsome man of late years and graying hair, approached the adventurers and began praising them for their deeds, deeds which were related to the Great Council by Steyus and Delcor and others in a confidential report.

Imbellem took the chance to engage with Adwonus and asked him how Pyrra was. Not without a dash of melancholy, Adwonus replied she was gone, having left Herrod last week to the Dead Isle; for she had heard rumor that some of her people were still alive there. Imbellem gave him a pat on the back and said something like "that's women for ya."

Finally the councilors unveiled to the adventurers their reward and merely pointed behind them – and they pointed at a ship! Pure white sails along its towering mast fluttered like angels in the sky; the hull was a deep, dark brown, freshly made from the finest wood. This ship was new, and composed of the best materials the city could manage. And it was all theirs. The adventurers hastened onto the deck and joyfully explored their new abode, it's holds and rooms and decks and lines; Jacqueline had already climbed up the web-like ropes and into the crow's nest, beholding Herrod from on high. It was theirs. Along with an endowment of 2000 gold pieces.

The councilors congratulated them once more, and the adventurers were content; for this ship opened up a world of possibility for them. They could go anywhere they wanted, in all the Isles of Mercia – to the cavernous realms of Cliffshore and its goblin city of Groong; to Terrignis Mare and the wasteland of Rhyfel; to the dense jungle lands of Noanatu; to the cursed shores of the Dead Isle; or to anywhere else they could imagine. The world was theirs to explore.

Never before had the options seemed so endless to them, limited by nothing at all. The adventure here was at an end, for now. But there was always a new adventure waiting elsewhere, in the Isles of Mercia.

Congratulations! You have completed "Season 1: The Shadows of Herrod."
