IC: Back at the 'Hill'

At the moment, .....

Brandon Snow & Bruce the Strong stand on the wall of the 'Hill' just looking over fields of poppy they stayed behind to watch over the house as most went out at the Lord requests. They watch and see coming from the south Merius Basso and only half of this Blue Lancers.

Not yet in sight of the wall of the 'Hill', ......

The other half of the Blue Lancer and the rest of the Ashfield family are returning from the Dorne camp. They have shared and passed amongst themselves many concerns and options, but regardless of that they think they now all most report back to their lord.

A trumpet is sound at the return of the Blue Lancers, in response Lord Ascar Ashfield has come down to greet this ambassador and son of Kaldor. Several servants are also preparing the courtyard and clearing the area, there will be many horse and tired men to attend too.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Edric speedily rode back to Poppy Hall following Mathys, only making light conversation. Let us Hope you face me in the tourny Mathys, I would hate for you to relive all those times in the yard I bested you. Hearing the trumphets and seeing what looked to be the rest of the Blue Lances returning Edric took his horse into full gallop and hastily returned to the Hill. Sliding off his horse and handing the reins to a servant he made his way over to Merius. Merius it is good to see you here, but I must ask, Who sent you here? I thought you were going to remain home and keep Olaf busy while Mara and I came to me with Lord Ashfield

Merius looked with surprise to Edric. 'We had a message that a raven came ordering us to move and meet a legate from Dorne. Was this message not yours then?...'

Merius is clearly puzzled. But not deterred. 'Tycho is with this Dornish and will come to us when he is delivered. I thought it better to join you. There are two many swords around here...'

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Bruce had been watching the coming and goings from the wall, there had been many men riding out along with the various lords and Merius, he stood near to Brandon Snow, a man who next to anyone else would have been appeared to be larger than he did next to Bruce's bulk and size. With only half of the Lancers returning he wondered if perhaps he had missed a battle with someone for a moment before dismissing the thought. It would have been extremely foolish for the Dornish lords with their small entourage to fight, they were here for peace as well as the Reach lords, that and they really had no chance of taking the 'Hill' with those that are already inside.

As Ser Edric rode hard and fast to return Bruce slapped Brandon on the back, "I'm heading down, Going to see what Ser Edric has to say to Merius," He paused a moment as he turned to go, "You coming?" Regardless of the mans answer Bruce wasted no time as he headed down from the walls. He watched as Ser Edric sought out Merius and confronted the man, he listened as Ser Edric had greeted him saying it was good to see him, but then demanded to know what he (Merius) was doing there with the Lancers. Merius it seemed had assumed the raven that had brought the orders had come from Ser Edric himself, "Does that mean someone is sending orders with the proper seals to the Neumann men?" he pondered to himself a moment before he added to what Merius had said, "Swords aren't the only danger a man can bring," the big man grinned and flexed his hands a moment at the two of them as he was wont to do, "Which is why I was sent along, to help protect you and your sister when it would be otherwise unseemly to be armed Ser Edric."

Pella rides sedately back to Poppy Hall, comfortably behind the boys who appear to be in a rush.

She took in the scene of Blue Lancers scattered across Ashfield lands with interest, and began to wonder just what sort of welcome Ser Edric had been expecting from her father.

It had been years since she'd last seen Edric and while he had grown into a man, quite a handsome one, he had also fought in a war; she wondered how that might have changed him, becoming thoughtful as she threw her apple core into the grass.

"Mara, does your brother often travel with an army?", Pella queried politely.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Of course not Pella, I am sure that my Lord Father simply like yours wanted to negotiate from a position of strength to give the Reach every advantage possible.

Her Lord father was a fool. What they needed were less swords and more diplomats. Half of these warriors still wanted to prove themselves, or win glories that only come from distinguishing themselves in battle. Pella was a lovely girl strong and knowledgeable when amongst her family or during a Healing task. Still, she had a girl like essence about her that was shy and possibly naïve about the real world of Westeros. Mara could not fault her though. She was that way before the King's Court. She learned quickly that all situations were linked to the game. One false move, and your enemies could destroy you with shame or worse.

So Pella, as I promised when we are dismissed from here. We shall gather your sisters and go through my baggage. I am sure there are some lovely clothes and scents that you will like. And, I am sure my brother will forget his toy soldiers and spend more time with you.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Corinne Flowers sighed happily as they rode through the gates of the fortified hall that had been her home now for the last several years, its seems although not entirely pleasant were the backdrop of her life except when she was out riding in the countryside and she'd learned to associate them with home. The tall dirty blonde armoured woman slowly stretched her arms out inside the armour already eager to slide off the young destrier and get it padded down and stabled, she wanted a bath and warm meal. The ride with her half sister Pella had been pleasant enough although the young noblewoman was still awkward around her mothers bastard, Corinne had quietly laughed off her earlier comment although she hadn't completely rejected the idea. The bandits had been attacking a farm of House Ashfield's smallfolks so she'd seen no need to have the wrecks tied up and sent off to Poppy Hill to take up Lord Ascar's time, she'd simply hung the survivors from a tree and continued her patrol. She doubted her Lord would make a fuss about it, bandits were a never ending problem for the lands of the Ashfields and they had only gotten worse as the flood of broken men came across the mountains from the war in Dorne. No one paid their deaths any mind.

At least thats what Corinne hoped anyone, she could never be entirely sure with Lord Ascar, but that was for the future and at the moment it seemed far less important that getting these tired horses rubbed down and in their stables. Corinne had dropped back a little bit when Pella had gotten involved with her conversation with Lady Mara, the dirty blonde bastard had learned early on not to impose when her half siblings were entertaining other nobles. Although she remained protectively close to her younger half sister, as she smiled and waved to several of the house armsmen and guards she knew and practiced with regularly.

Pella smiled, nodding along with Mara's explanation of the presence of House Neumann's sellswords, although she was less than convinced by the reasoning that was offered.

"I...yes, I would like that very much." Pella said happily, blushing a little for reasons she couldn't quite explain. "I will need to know what the ladies in King's Landing are wearing if I am to make a mark for the house."

She rides the obedient Meryn much closer to Mara, and leans over in the saddle, speaking conspiratorially. "I don't think I'm supposed to tell anyone, but mother says that this will be my last chance to find a partner before my father marries me off to a Dornishman.", Pella confides, both excited and worried at the prospect.

Edric face turned grim at the news of orders being given on his behalf without his knowledge. I sent no ravens. He pauses for a second pondering his options. This news is troubling to say the least. Have your men make camp outside the walls. I don't want to burden Lord Ascar anymore then we have to.In the morning send Tycho back with with the men. I want you to stay with a detachment of your most deserving men to serve as our escort to King's Landing. Turning to Bruce. I want you and Ser Duncan to guard my sister. If this is trap I want to make sure she is in safe hands. Turning back to Merius. Also, keep the Bastard from the North here as well. I might be in need of a squire in the tournies to come and he would be the best choice.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Merius nodded 'It will be done as you say.'

If he was entirely honest, he was quite glad with the opportunity to take a rest. These past times have been trying for the Blue Lances. Chasing banditry around the countryside, and now escorting all these soft lords around was beginning to take its toll.

He left getting the camp ready in the capable hands of Lysono. He took the time to go once around their camp to ensure all their men were back and had a fire going. After exchanging some words with the odd one he got back to his sparse tent. Lysono already had the mulled wine warming and a capon in the spit. Merius smiled as he handed his horse over and his hawk made a quick sweep at the capon as Lysono cursed at the bird and threatened him with the other spit.

In times like this he almost felt back home and not in this foreign land. Would he ever feel at home in here?...

OOC: Will FF a bit here.

It was late when Tycho finally returned. Merius could see in his face that he knew what was coming. He gave him careful orders about not getting in any major confrontations and just ensure that the roads were open and the castle secure. He also gave him leave to only depart at first light, which would give the men a chance to rest. A not so glum Tycho left for his fire with a bit of capon and cup of mulled wine.

The group rode back to a Poppy Hall, as Mathys mood improved the further he got away from the stench of the Dornish. Edric rode up along side of him, was offered a grin from Mathys, when the matter of their childhood bouts was mentioned.

" Well Edric, that was then, and this is now. I look forward seeing you on they flat of your back, when my lance sends you toppling from a horse."

This was said in  a good natured way, as he respected Edric, and considered him a friend, more so, then many currently on his father's lands When Edric suddenly put spurs to his horse, and rode off to Poppy Hall, Mathys frowned at seeing to many sell swords out and about. It was like a Bee Hive of activity, and he had to wonder what was causing all the activity. So he put spurs to his own horse, and rode on til he arrived at the Hall. Having dismounted and tossed his reins to one of the small folk, Mathys nodded to those he knew.

" So, what goes on here, anyway?"

These words where directed to anyone that cared to answer the young noble.

Edric waited for Lord Ascar to join him and Mayths before speaking. Seems as if someone is ordered the Blue Lances to escort our Dornish Lord here. Merius thought it was I that sent the orders, but I did no such thing. giving a short bow to Lord Ashfield. Lord Ascar, with your permission I would like to keep the two sworn shorts and a small detachment of Blue Lances here as protection and to help escort my sister and I along with your family to King's Landing. The rest will return home and those staying will eat from their own rations so you don't have to waste your stores on them.

The those that know one another, greet and pass words Ascar clears the archway of one of the walls, now in sight of everyone. Victarion notices his father and dismounts, he has not spoken much since the meeting with the Dorne Lords.

"Father." Victarion looks down at the "My Lord,...."

Lord Ascar can see something troubles his son "We will speak of you meeting later in private for now there is one more that we most attend to." Victarion replies with a "yes" and walks away.

" Wine! Someone fetch wine and victuals for the returning nobles. And oh yes, bring some old bones for the Dogs of Dorn to chew upon. Let it not be said, that Poppy Hall did not seek to make those of Dorn feel at home."

Mathys flopped down in a seat at the long table, and propped up his feet on the table, with a little self satisfied smile upon his lips.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Corinne Flowers sighed at her half-brothers antics as she slide off of her horse and onto the courtyard of the fortified hall that was her home, one day with a lot of effort and money it might aspire to be a actual castle one day. Without conscious thought the young dirty blonde lancer adjusted her sheathed sword to prevent it from tripping her as she slide off and barely even noticed the heavy armour as she got firm footing on the pack earth and stone of the courtyard. She gave a quick signal to the other men in her patrol who were already dismounting and taking the new destiers off to the stables where they'd be rubbed down, feed, then water before the men would remove their armour and take their own rest. The one lancer who was walking just a little bit funny was leading the horse that had proven saddle shy, Corinne wasn't sure what to do with that beast, she couldn't let anyone ride it especially in a fight that would be as good as murder. But Destiers were expensive and losing even one was not a pleasant thought for anyone who knew the price of horseflesh, personnel she thought it might make good breeding stock for the Poppy Hill herd but even there such a skittish animal could easily hurt one of the field hands or even a breeding mare. She'd have to take it up with Lord Ascar, next chance she got.

Then the blue eyed dirty blonde woman blinked as she saw one of the squires from the party that had joined them coming up to her and spoke to her, the Mistress of the Horse nodded slowly and smiled back at the armoured young man no sense in not being polite. "No worries, the stable boys will take your horses and the grooms will see to them right away." She gave a loud whistled and waved over some of the young small folks who worked in the castle stables learning the trade of tending to horses hoping for a better life. The moved rapidly knowing that she didn't tolerate slackness moving quickly to take the reigns of the abandoned horses, the better trained grooms and lancers kept an eye on the boys. "You can follow them if you like and want to make sure the horses are properly taken care of but my people know their business well, as for where your Lord's belongs go I haven't the foggiest. I just got back myself, speak to the Seneschal for that."

She properly introduces herself to Garin and he in turn offers his hand as they walk together.

She quietly tries to wander away from the group to the Maester's laboratory of sorts, rather than follow either of her parents and be forced to be a gracious hostess. The prospect of burying her nose in a book, or chatting with Maester Job, was far more appealling.

She returned to her work not entirely comfortable with the conversation now that it had shifted from entirely practical terms into the grey of interpersonal relationships. Turning back to her work she began the process of carefully rubbing down her own destier then removing the heavy saddle with a small gasp at the weight being put on her already sore muscles before she guided the horse into the stables. After getting the horse in freshly mucked stall with food and water she quickly secured her saddle and harness before going to check to make sure the rest of the patrol and the house grooms had taken care of her patrols horses and the House Ashfield delegations mounts.

" I am the reason, Father. I am the cause, for the Dog of Dorn, to cast down the gauntlet, and it shall be Mathys that picks it up.  If we cannot put these men of Dorn in the ground, then at least we can put them in their place."

Mathys took a drink, and braced himself for the storm that would be his Father's response.

Lord Ascar replies to his son "SO Mathys, you will test the Dornishmen's metal. You will defend our house's honor. You know men dies at these tournaments.... Is this an excuses for you to kill another Dorne, or give this house one less heir?"

In response to his father's words, the young Knight stood to his feet and regarded his father, with a most serious expression.

" The challenge was made, even if the Dornish thick wits offered a wager to go with it. What would you have me do, Father? Honor demands, that  I accept the challenge, which I did. It is a matter of the honor of our House, and my own. If the Dorn fall and never rise again, in the encounter, all the better."

His hands where now holding the edge of the table, but his body language and stern glance at his sire, was of challenge. Not a wise thing to do, in Ascar's own Hall, but Mathys was not one to see the angles of a matter, unless it was upon a field of battle or the Lists.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

May I offer insight. I am not certain, but just as there are rivalries in the the Reach between houses. I believe that it is even more so in Dorne. For the most part, the Reach is of similar lineage and culture, but the Dorne seem to be more separated. If, I am correct Lord Steiner and Kaldor or rivals.

Mara paused and poured some wine for the standing Lord Ascar.

Just upon Kaldor's arrival we heard them make comments about their Dornish brothers being less cultured. My Lord, while the Sers Edric and Mathys accepted the challenge. he Dorne lord wisely neglected to say who their champion will be. This gives Steiner an advantage of placing a champion that might understand their fighting styles and capitalize on it. If, it was I would practice in private, and give them no knowledge of your skills prior to battle less they prep themselves for that style.

As she speaks she hand Lord Ascar, and braces her will to meet his stare. She had found that often by meeting a man in his world she could disarm him quickly of his wits and make her point.

"Enough of this, We are asked to begin trade agreements with the Dorne, these orders did not come with instructions, just simple open a trade way. Steiner is a sly man and a pirate, just a bit better then the Iron Born. They serve Martell's when it suits their house. And my eyes in ears in the south say they can not be trusted. We will open trade with House Kaldor through the Prince's Pass, they are loyal to House Kowlyn and from the 'Pass' we can open trade to the waters."

Lord Ascar was not really upset about the word spoken or his sons position but now once House Steiner learns they have no trade agreement through there lands they will want to take revenge for this slight, but as Lord Ascar did not let anyone know of his intentions he must bring it to light after the fact.

Pulling down on the leash he continued to work the horse as it lashed out. "Thank the Seven you're here Ma'am!" he called to Corinne. "Something's spooked him and I can't get 'im to settle, he hasn't acted this brash since we brok 'im!"

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Corinne Flowers sighed heavily having just finished getting herself cleaned up and getting something solid and hot into her stomach, she'd come out to check over the stables and make sure all the horses were settling in as well as keep an eye on the stable hands making sure they were about their business smartly. Then she heard the angry cry of that young destrier that they'd brought out on patrol and cursed heading toward the sound as fast as possible, she was relieved to see that the powerful and expensive young warhorse hadn't injured or killed anyone. The tall dirty blonde woman whistled softly getting the large warhorses attention and raised her hand out toward it slowly walking toward trying to present herself as nonthreatening as possible, still the horse bite and stamped as she got closer.

Corinne spoke softly but clearly to the young groom another bastard like herself and someone she considered a friend as well as someone who worked under her, "I know Richard, this one is dangerous it took a trained lancer to keep him under control on the patrol. Now remain calm and keep his reins firmly in your hands boy." The massive horse stamped and bite angry and afraid as Corinne slowly very carefully moved up and stroked its neck, the horse was obvious shy about being touched but it calmed down for a moment. Which was long enough for Corinne to take is walking rope firmly in her well trained hands and get the horse tied off to something strong enough that she didn't have to worry about the horse breaking it or pulling it up. The destier obvious wasn't please by this and he snorted viciously as twisted against the rope reigning up and kicking once or twice while Corinne stepped back away from the horse pulling the young stable boy with her, as they got farther away the warhorse calmed a little.

With that Corinne sighed in relief, "That was close Richard, I hadn't suspected that she was that shy around people but I guess four trained lancers are experienced enough to keep her from going wild. Unfortunately that destrier is one of the new ones we purchased and she's saddle shy, she scared of her own shadow with a serious hatred for people in general." The tall dirty blonde woman squatted down a safe distance away and check out the destiers stomach then closed her eyes and cursed, "And that would be the reason why, I should have checked when we first took her out on patrol." She pointed to a line of scars along the horse's stomach, "The horse breeder who 'trained' her was an incompetent and cruel to boot, he lashed her regularly on her stomach where it would harder to see when someone bought her. Nasty business."

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Lord Garin of Kaldor, is Lord Reinard oldest son and 1st heir. He is well know by name in The Reach because he has lead many victories against those that attempted to march through the Prince's Pass. He is well know for some interesting and bold ambush tactics that forced many to retreat.

His family has not been very recognized, and many other houses have taken credit for both his and his fathers achievements. Never the less they are extremely proud men and respectful on the battle field using many of the old ways, including releasing prisoners, that pledge not to return under any circumstances. They, ...themselves have never been accused of lower tactics like torture or and cruelty.

Lord Garin is a young man, unmarried and has sharp facial features, and has olive tone skin. He stand about 5' 10" and has a med. build, ... he doesn't look over powerful nor does he look like a pushover.

The door opens, dress in Dorne fashion but still dirty from his travels, "My Lords and Ladies, .... " The servant passes a wine goblet to Garin and fills it then from the same pitcher fills the lords glass, a tray of salted meat is then passed to the lord and then his guest, as the normal and tradition exchange of customs is observed, but not discussed. "Thank you, ... both on my behalf and my family."

Bearing several scrolls with different family seals he takes one of the open seats and places these scrolls one by one on the table. As he lays then, "House Kowlyn, and his banner houses, House Kaldor, House Ravenhowe, and the families of House Dylann have all sent their conditions and requests for this trade agreement. These papers confirm I can speak on all their behaves. And that if you are will to do the same they will finalize this at Kings Landing after the nations are at peace by marriage."

Lucky Mathys spoke up before Edric could respond and defend his sister against Ascar sarcastic comments. He simply remains quite returning Merius's look with a nod letting him know that everything will be ok. as talks of trade agreements take place Edric picks up each scroll and looks over all the seals before speaking up. I am sure that these arrangements are all well and good, but what is really going on? Behind closed doors they are one of a few houses that stand against this peace agreement. So much so, that my house has uncover a plot to assassinate a member of one of the Dorne houses and place blame on the north. I believe that once this trade agreement is in place your house or one of your banner houses will be victim of these despicable actions and your houses should all be careful going forward. Steiner and his house are often compared to the Ironborn in their sea going abilities and sometimes in their actions. Revenge will be their fuel and more war will be their payment. Our family ties are strong with their house in our history and with their banner men. But the Dornish can be fickle about such matters. Lord Kowlyn and the houses in this agreement will travel north by sea to the Stormlands they wish to show a strength in this peace agreement and enter the Crownlands by the side of your houses. The meeting location will be Blackhaven and from their to Kings Landing."

Garin looks about the room taking note of facial expressions, "I will await your answers and leave by morning. I ask that you hold off any meeting with them until I have a day or two start to avoid any interaction with them as I'm sure they will if they can."

From the top of the walls over the main gate one man shouts out "Two approach from the hills, their banner is House Steiner!"

Brandon Snow, Bruce the Strong, Pella Ashfield, Corinne Flowers and several others are still within distance to hear the shouts.

"They are riding in fast, ...."

Wulfgang Tannard hears the shouts and leave the sables to see what is going on, as he reaches the courtyard the gates open quickly and Vernon Steiner rides in with a squire.

Vernon Steiner and one of his men-at-arms rides into the courtyard, .... they circle their horses, taking in the structure and layout. They are creating a large dust cloud, a common tactic for Dornish horsemen,......

Vernon stops at the sight of Wulfgang, ... he then takes better control of his horse and moves up to Wolfgang "So the wolf is here then that means the snake is not so far behind, ... Where is your Lord Garin?

Wulfgang has a surprised look on his face, and a look of fear and disbelief of who stands in front of him. "But you were said to be dead .. ?"

"NO BOY A STEINER DOESN'T DIE AT SEA WE KILL AT SEA !" Vernon is clearly very upset at the sight of Wulfgang. Turning to the closest Asfield "I see that House Ashfield has already taken in a Dornish Lord, .... Tell your lord we seek our audience in 2 days or this peace agreement goes back to your king and our prince with mal-contempt."

"Wulfgang tell your lords stay off the eastern seas, ...." he turns the horse away and then quickly back, "OOooo and tell Lord Garin that we know of the 'Butcher' and we send our regards to his brother, ..." he starts laughing.

Again turns to the nearest Ashfield "I come to invite but I think its best now for us to stay clear of one another until we formally meet as diplomats, .... make sure your lord knows this as well, .... he is not welcomed at our site unless he comes with open arms to discuss what we came here for" each time speaking to an Ashfield he circles the horse to strike fear of getting trampled if to close.

Edric leans back in chair  rolling his eyes and grinning at the news of the plot that they have just learned about. And this is the greatness of peace! He says in a sarcastic tone. You trade the fear of getting a spear in the gut for the fear of a dagger in the back, now I understand why everyone loves it so much. Leaning forward and bring his hands together on the table, taking a more serious tone. Lord Ascar, I will make sure that my father is made aware and that he takes all the necessary precautions. turning his attention to Mara. Sister, if we are truly in danger then you will not leave the sight of either myself or Ser Duncan. It is bad enough that we have to worry about Olaf already.  Edric stands and gives a nod to the Lords and those at the table. Well it seems I will take my leave too. It has been a long day of riding and I have had my fill of politics for one day. Lord Garin, it will not be said that House Neumann didn't do it part in sealing old wounds. Talk to my man Merrius and fell free to take as many Blue Lances as you need to see yourself safely home. I look forward to seeing them and your family at Blackhaven.

Edric takes his leave and exits the council chambers. Taking a look out the window he sees Vernon circling the courtyard in his horse, seeming very upset. I wonder what has the snake flustered now. He thought to himself, but seeing that Lady Pella wasn't in the courtyard, he decided in wasn't worth his time to investigate. Anyway, Lord Ascar made him an offer and he wasn't going to reject any offer made by the man who had raised him. Edric wondered about the halls of Poppy Hall, reminiscing on his times he spent running about these halls as youth. Finally making his way to the Maester's Chamber he gives and nod to Maester Jon, who was busying working on some concoction. Leaning against the door he gives out a laugh at the sight of Pella reading one of her many books. It seems you have not change one bit M'Lady. After so many years it can still be counted on that you would be down here reading.

Being dismissed by his father in such a way, was bitter sweet to the pride of young Mathys. He wanted to depart that mind numbing meeting, but to be waved away like he was a cup boy, was another matter. But the second son wanted to speak with his friend, Edric before he departed, but whatever Mathys was going to say, died upon his tongue, when he heard the Man of Dorne speaking in the courtyard.

The young knight stood at the doorway, with hands on his hips, and attempted to digest the maggots the prancing man of Dorne was saying. The Horse being moved in a circle was a tactic to intimidate opponents, Mathys had seen it many a time before a battle. Suddenly, and without a word of warning, Mathys sprang forward into a run, like some predator after prey. Mathys attempted to time this action as he leaped upon the hitching rail, and using that as a spring board, leaped up when the Dornish Speaker passed, and grabbed onto  an upper arm and then jerked the man backward and out of the saddle. Or so he attempted.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Wolfgang rushes out of the courtyard and searches for Garin. Knocking and then entering without the ok,  .....  Standing by the door, somewhat out of breath, Wolfgang speaks up "M'Lord Garin, it seems The lack of salt in the air has driven young lord Vernon Steiner, to call on the House of Koldar, ...m'lord he says he is knows of the 'Buther' and your brother."

The commotion has gotten the Hill in an uproar, ... Now the hallways and servants, guards and others have begun to speak about the events of a 'mad Dornish' that has invaded the courtyard. The call to arms has not yet been sound, so many are wondering what is really going on.

The meeting is interrupted by Wolfgang and Lord Garin is no longer interested in the events of the table, his focus is now the events in the courtyard. "M'lady you said the Blue Lancer will able to escort me, I ask that they do but not back to Dorne but to Blackhaven in the Stormlands and we most leave tonight in the cover of dark, my brother's life is in danger." As Garin starts to walk out "I will handle Vernon before he kills someone" as he looks back at the lord and the remainder of those still at the table, he nods his head showing he will deal with this, ....

Mara stood up, and before speaking she speaking she straighten her dress. She knew her brother had large shadows protecting her. She turned towards where she thought Ser Duncan or the Strongman, Bruce, would be.

One of you bring Merius to me. He is not to stop, and speak to anyone. He is to come and seek me out. Now go!

Her volume was low, and her size was not intimidating. But, she had a way of speaking that would not allow many to speak against her words.

Wallace has been tending to his duties around the house. He has a lot to get ready, the lord has ask that a feast be ready for the Dornish lords. And will that take up a great deal of his time to prepare. He also has his rounds and then there are the solider. Wallace pays little attention to them but he does check on reports from the captains to make sure they are keeping up with there responsibilities, even thou he really doesn't care for it much.

As he is in the kitchen checking on the food that need to be ready in the next 2 days a young girl comes crashing in the kitchen door, "Ser Mathys's is taking on the Dornish Viper single handed." "Hurry come see !@!"

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

I am sorry I ask you this I asssure you if there was any other way I would use it, but a plot is a foot. The target of the Plot is most likely House Ashfield or Neumann. At this meeting Lord Garin told us of a plot he discovered. One of the Dornish Houses, he did not say directly, but made it obvious he thought it was Steiner was plotting to assassinate another Dornish Lord. The blame would be laid onto one of the Houses from the Reach. He seems honorable, but I can sense there is much he did not tell us. I think he may know who the target is, and when the assassin will strike. He wishes to catch them in the act, so he can gain leverage or some other advantage. We are to join you at Blackhaven with the idea that many of the Dornish Lords and Lord Ashfield will ride in together symbolizing the peace. I believe the attack will unfold sometime in that gathering. You are simply to watch, and learn all you can about the plot. I am not certain how, but I have faith in you Captain.

Mara looked at the Sell sword Captain. She hoped that she had not misread the man. Much was said about sell swords, and their lack of honor. She believed all men could have honor no matter their profession. It was simply a choice.

Merius thanked Lady Neumman and quickly progressed to the lances' camp. Once in there he opened the bag and spotted the gold. He was befuddled by it. Was it for some specific purpose? He pocketed it for the moment and would consider the best use for it later.

He called Lysono and instructed him to keep a close eye on the Neummans. A much closer eye than they have done so far. The Neummans were never to go anywhere without someone from the lances following.

After a frugal meal, and still with Tyco in tow, he went to meet this Lord Garin and to see how the preparations were for this journey.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

The solider draws his weapon, and dismounts. "M'Lord Vernon allow me, ...."

Lord Garin side steps the solider to his off hand side and waits for his attack. The archers of House Ashfield draw arrows but wait for a command from the captains. Those in the courtyard step away from the action as to allow room for the combatants to have their fight. None try to stop a Dorne from killing a Dorne.

The solider give a straight forward assault with his sword in hand, the blade points down and he holds it low and he swings upwards attempting to strike across Garins chest. "You will need better men then his Vernon if you wish to see victory" as Garin simply sidesteps again and pushes the solider back with an open hand attack. Lord Garin is not even holding his weapon in a manner which would be taking this solider seriously. Then Garin makes a faint with his body and raise his weapon but instead just laughs, "Perhaps you should send a few more Vernon or better yet maybe you wish to dismount?" Garin taunts both the solider and Vernon provoking the soldier's anger and Vernon's pride.

The solder again attacks, this time with a over head lung and aiming for Garin's shoulder and neck area. Garin seems upset that he tries to continue and that Vernon doesn't try to save this mans life. So be it Garin thinks to himself his life is then forfeit. Garin again sidesteps but this time he raises his blade, with his free hand garbs the back of the soldiers neck and kick his feet from under him. He has forces his opponent to his knees and then steps on the soldier's sword disarming him. Garin looks at Vernon with the knowledge that his fight is over, .... not looking at his target but just fixedly, vacantly at Vernon his blade is swift and true, ..... as he lops off the soldiers head in one stroke.

The lady's and servants scream and some yell out at the act, ..... Garin being so merciless, he clearly won and the death of the solider was strictly an act against Vernon.

Vernon's honor is now challenged and he dismounts.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Wallace had been upset ever since his lord informed him about the command of the King to arrange a trade agreement with one, or even multiple, Dornish houses to foster the peace that had been agreed upon by the King’s proposal for marriage of a Dornish princess.
Naturally, he would not want a mere agreement for the sake of the agreement alone. What kind of steward would he be if he would not try to actually benefit from such a treaty? A poor one indeed, and he always strived to be better than poor, much better if he could help it.
So he had leaved through all the reports of incomes, tables, levers and all handnotes to determine just what Ashfield could offer and would need in return.
Alas, though he was rather meticulous in his daily dealings with running the household his documentation was somewhat lacking. Not that the required Maester Jon’s help in any way, but just because he was well capable to read and write didn’t mean that he loved to do just that. In fact, he usually preferred to deal with things ‘hands on’ rather than writing it all down. None of the household could read so he had to deal with them personally anyway.
After having arranged the welcome of the heir’s new wife, he had spent the whole night going through the numbers and thus he was rather tired.
The morning had rushed through its hours and he had barely dealt with the daily arrangements when he was informed that the Hall would have even more visitors. The Hall was not that big and he wringed his hands as he tried to accommodate all the newcomers.

Rather than join his lord in the delicate negotiations with the Dornishman, he had been busy talking with the chief cook about the evening’s festivities. Not keeping good documentation about stocks he had to inspect the storage rooms himself to check what was required, followed by ordering and arranging all that was still required.

Naturally he became aware of the party that left the Hall early to speak to the Dornishmen who had been so bold as to come with a rather large entourage – a militant one, one might notice – and just set up camp on Ashfield lands. But he just had not found the time to contribute. Needless to say he did feel vexed that his lord had not called upon him in such a delicate situation.

Four boys had run off to deliver his requests and then it was time to listen to the captains. Funny enough, again four, each for the houses’ extensive military force. Unfortunately, none of those could read or write either and so he had to listen to their daily problems and challenges, too. Usually these were petty things in his opinion, often things he wondered why he had to settle these, but alas, Ashfield did lack in true knights. Whatever ‘true’ meant in that case. Wallace often had wished for a knight that could read, but alas, in times of war, no man-at-arms could be seriously expected to indulge in a classical education.
Perhaps with peace coming around he thought wistfully as the captain droned on about yet another petty grievance about food supply for the men. As it were the soldiers already did get much better fare than typical, Lord Ashfield had always made clear that his soldiers needed strength and you only really got that with good food… or so the chief cook would have him believe.

The last captain just left when he checked in on the kitchen again.
quote:
As he is in the kitchen checking on the food that need to be ready in the next two days a young girl comes crashing in the kitchen door, "Ser Mathys's is taking on the Dornish Viper single handed." "Hurry come see !@!"

With a frown he sees the younger lads and lasses heeding the call, but he couldn’t handle those, too. He gives a severe shake of denial.
”I will forgive the young ones this time, but you all have enough and more useful things to do rather than witness yet another… episode of our lord’s son.”, he commands sternly.
But then it registers on him that the lass had spoken of a Dornishman.
”Surely, he did not…”, he mutters, then turns around in alarm and makes quickly for the yard.

He arrives just as Mathys strides into the hall.
”My lord, what happened to your head ?”, he asks in concern, but the second son of Lord Ashfield just waved his hand and continued on, not saying much.

Obviously, however, that was not the end of the story as he hears the sound of fighting.
Quickly he rushes outside, all attempts at decency thrown into the wind.

quote:
Vernon's honor is now challenged and he dismounts.

”Enough !”, Wallace shouts, incredulous that no one had intervened.
But Ashfield’s soldiers were well trained and they did listen to the clearly issued command.
”Lord Garin, you will not kill another man in the Hall of my Lord Ashfield. This is inacceptible. And you, Lord Vernon, will not settle this grave matter inside Ashfield’s walls.”.
Of course, no lord would listen to a command issued by mere Wallace and so he raises his left arm, a clear signal for the archers to draw their bows again, aiming at both Lord Garin and Lord Vernon.
”Sheethe your blades, my lords, or the war will continue right here with only Dornish blood spilled in this very yard.
My lord will not suffer any more deaths inside his hall, deaths dealt by anyone not of his household.”

There, the threat was uttered and these Lords would do better to heed him.

Garin speaks these words as if reminding Vernon that such killing even those not noble blood maybe acceptable south but it is not proper in many other homes, .... and as so, they were about to commit.

Vernon says nothing in reply to Garin and mounts back onto his horse. "We will return for the body" and rides out.

Wallace gestures to one of the guards who approaches Lord Garin and cautiously takes the offered bliade.
"I thank you, Lord Garin, for showing common sense and  yielding to my Lord Ashfield's rule.", he answers humbly, but not subserviently.
Luckily he had always been adept at hiding his true opinion, like his view of the incredibly foolish action of killing a man while enjoying guest rights in another noble's home of the Dornish noble. Especially since the peace agreements were ss of yet still most fragile.

"Lord Vernon, please accept House Ashfield's sincere regret at having one of your loyal men killed within these walls. However, kindly do note that Ashfield had no part in this.
If you prefer, we would offer to bring your dead man to your camp immediately."

Surely it was better if the Dornish nobleman would not come again to the Hall while Lord Garin was present.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Wallace sighs inwardly with relief. It would have brought disaster to House Ashfield, if the blame for this death would have been laidat Lord Ashfield's feet.
With a short gesture the delicate situation is eased and the archers relax accordingly.

"I will make sure that Lord Ascar is informed of your wishes.
My lord, it would certainly be a good advice if you were not to carry arm the next time you come to our hall. The guards may confuse such a behaviour as needlessly aggressive."
, he answers with a disarming smile, not quite liking the imperative tone of the Dornishman.
Then again, the last sentence was also for the guards. Wallace would make sure that the guards at the gate would not allow an armed, armoured and mounted Dornishman to enter the Hall again, not in the current heated up situation.

Quickly he arranges two guards to take two horses - with the consent of the Lady's bastard daughter Corinne, of course. They lift the dead man on his own horse and use leather straps to keep the corpse in place. Then they mount up themselves to escort Steiner's heir back to the camp, with instructions to return immediately.

Still having the Kaldor blade in his hands he hands it to one of the lads who had run away to gawk at the scene.
"Bring this blade back to our guest's quarters. He has no need for a weapon within our halls."
Wallace would like to say a couple of choice words to the Kaldor heir about how to conduct oneself while being a guest of a lord of the Reach, but thinks it best for now to not utter his misgivings. It was his lord's place to do that.

To two other servants he says briskly.
"And you shall wash away the blood in the yard, use some soap, too, the smell of blood might agitate the horses."
Nevermind that Wallace found the sight and smell offensive, too.

Happy with resolution of this irritating situation and quite satisfied with himself, he returns into the hall.
The servants comply quickly and efficiently.

She feared for Merius and his men. Had she sent them into a suicide mention. The Steiner's will be of course seeking vengeance, and seemed to have enough men to be a threat to the Lancers.

The day had been to trying so far, she wanted to retreat to the warm and comfort of the bed. She knew she could not do that. She knew that at some point Lord Ascar will review what just happened, and make decisions how to proceed with the Steiner's. The intervention of the Castelan was timely and the commotion quickly came to an end. Even more timely when Garin mentioned the lances. Taking the cue Merius strutted forwarded to make Garin aware they were ready to leave, he kept reminding himself to show the proper courtesy due, something Westerosi eagerly craved for... ‘Lord Garin, the Blue Lances are to depart when you desire to go…’

When the second son, of a House Ashfield stood in the courtyard, and looked out of the gate, and to  he he fields beyond. He placed slowly drew his long sword, and made a few slashes in hey he air, to loosen up his arm, for what come next.

" Craven, am I? I will show that piss pot drinking, son of a Dornish whore, what my measure is, by the Seven. He thinks he can come here and act like he is Lord, making demands and threats. I will chop of his so called manhood, and feed it to the dogs."

Mathys slammed the sword back into its scabbard, and made a visual inspection of his armor, while he waited his horse.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Seeing that Pella was engulfed in her book and had not notice notice him, he gives a slight nod of his head Sorry to disturb you. Edric leaves and decides to check to see if Ser Vernon was still in the court yard. Upon entering the yard and seeing Mathys in full armor he draws his sword. Mathys what is wrong? Does Lord Steiner plan to atta... His voice trails off as he notices the dead Dornishman at Mathys's feet. Edric stance becomes lacks with his sword almost falling from his grasp as the memories of the men he has killed flood his mind. Those close enough notice Edric's hand is trembling slightly. He stands still for several seconds before return his gaze Mathys. Mathys please tell me you did not just start a war. His voice is faint but loud enough for those in the courtyard to hear.

PLEASE EDIT

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

"If you will excuse me, my lady.", says Wallace and appraches Rollo, the captain of the garrison.

Rollo is a large man, easily 6'2" and 15 stone of solid muscle and a capable fighter. He has a good grasp of command, too, but unfortunately lacks initiative and imagination. A good soldier, but never a good leader. Which is the reason for the guards' blunder earlier.

"Captain Rollo, a word, if you please."
Wallace had long ago learned that courtesy had the same effect as a direct command with Rollo, somewhat blunting the sharpness of the chastisement.
"The guards should not have allowed the provovation of the Steiner heir. As long as the Dornishmen camp on Ashfield lands, make sure to keep the gate closed. That way we can thwart any nasty surprises, right? Also, any mounted persons must be encouraged to dismount immediately. You best have two of your men taking the horse as quickly as possible. Inform the grooms right away, when riders arrive at the gate, so they will already wait. Then we will not have any prancing about, right? Also, I will not allow any Dornishman to draw blade within our halls again, understood? If that happens again, I would have you, Rollo, request them to sheethe them right away. Do bolster your request with archers on the wall.
And by golly, be civil about it! We would not want any hothead,"
, Wallace is interrupted as Mathys makes his appearance in the yard, fully armoured and geared up for hostilities.
"to take offense.", he finishes, his irritation well hidden.

Briefly Wallace wonders where Lord Ascar is. Surely, he could calm down both his guest and his son.
He watches out for lady Mara, appealing to her with a glance only. Perhaps she would be able to curb her brother's enthusiasm.
Wallace approaches Mathys and with an amiable smile says.
"Will my lord require an escort for his ride? Your attire certainly suggests that you expect further trouble. I will arrange for four men to accompany you."

TIMEPASS for Lord Ascar's appearance in the yard... if only to see Lord Garin off with the Neumann Blue Lances

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Pointing at the first boy he sees, "Boy look for Merius Basso, let him know I wait for his Blue Lancers and with the recent events I think it best we leave as soon as possible." The boy just stares at his with a dead look, "Move it boy, and give the sword to Wolfgang before you run off."

"Wolfgang gather my things we ride with or without them, ... there is little time, quickly"
Lord Garin waits in the courtyard for his things to be brought down after just arriving.

Merius Basso
quote:
‘Lord Garin, the Blue Lances are to depart when you desire to go…’

And so he has sent the boy to let them know he is ready, ... for all he cares they can be standing in the courtyard but he is so focused that it doesn't matter who is around him.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

Lord Ashfield is seen on the battlements with his oldest son. They watch, ....

Standing on the otherside of the Lord is Dyllan Redbrush, ... the lord can be seen talking to him just before he leaves their side and walks down the stone steps from the wall to the courtyard.

Dyllan approaches the young Mathys, "Your father has seen enough and wants you to retire for the day. In fact perhaps it best we ready to leave to Kings Landing there is a lot to prepare and this will please your father." Mathys knows Dyllan well, in fact Dyllan has taken a great deal of his time teaching Mathys many skills. Mathys's father favors the old man and in fact often reminds those around why he does so much. and does so often.

Mara was weary of all that happened today. She had pushed herself much to hard. She kew that she needed to retire to her room, and rest. As the Castellan parted, she took the opportunity to leave.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

When Dyllan walked over and bespoke of his father's wishes, Mathys frowned deeply, and seemed about to speak, then laughed instead.
" Alright, good friend, Dyllan. Only because you asked so nice, and I doubt my father was, so gentle in his words to me. Let us then prepare for our journey to Kings Landing"

Mathys clasped the older man upon his shoulder, as they walked towards the entrance, he had respect for few, and this was one of them. Not many could back him down, once he had his mind set, on a course of action.
" When we arrive at the Capitol, and the tourney begins, I intend to leave more then one Dornish Viper kissing the dirt, from my lance. By the Seven, I so swear."

With Lord Ascar putting a lid on the boiling kettle, Wallace returns to his tasks. Even though the feast would have fewer guests there still was much to do, nevermind overseeing the preparations for the long journey to the east.

Re: IC: Back at the 'Hill'

RECAP

Merius Basso left to retrieve the Lord Garin of Kaldor by the request of Lord Ashfield

Ser Edric Neumann & Mara Neumann return from the Dorne camp, to then be requested to stand in on new events of trade & peace with a Lord Garin.

Bruce the Strong, Corinne Flowers, Dyllan Redbrush, Ser Duncan Shepherd and several others meet, greet, discuss and witness several events in the courtyard. From the return of house members from the Dorne camp to Lord Ashfield assigning his thoughts and command to those around them. And then the event of most Interest, the quick fight between the Dorneish Lords at the cost of a Dorne warrior.

Ser Mathys Ashfield experiences a few unfortunate events with his father and Vernon Steiner in the courtyard.

Wallace Justman busy getting the house affairs in order, is not exactly happy with all the new news on trade - the visitor's actions in the courtyard has place him in hi-concern for the house.

Once the events in the courtyard settle down the house gets back to packing and preparing to leave to kings landing. The Lord as yet to announce who will be staying behind to watch over the 'Hill' but rumor has it the those mostlikely will not be staying behind.
