IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Its almost a year for the crew since they have seen home. Its been long and some of the men miss home. But their loyalties are strong and they are all slowly becoming rich.

The captain has come up with a plan, raid the coasts of The Disputed Lands and the islands in-between; to and from Dorne, and Stormlands, then ship there valuables home over land, and when done they should be rich and comfortable with plenty of saltwives and things they can be proud of that they earned the ironborn way.

Currently the ship is loaded after a successful raid off the coast of LYS. The wind is good as they sail through the Sea of Dorne to a small hamlet with a single dock. At the moment the dock has a large unmarked vessel which is unloading their wears.

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Raul the Silent earned his name by being just that, silent.  Dressed in his dark stained padded armor with its high collar pulled up almost over his mouth he's taken up his usual perch on the prow of the ship.

Truthfully the young raider wasn't all the clear on the plan but it seemed to be making the Captain happy and the other important people on board happy too, so who was he to complain...he'd gotten a pretty knife out of it at least, spoils from the last raid.

Silently Raul sat on the boat watching men come and go and unload this cargo or box up that cargo.  He'd give a nod to one or two that he recognized before going back to examining his knife.

Bear chested and hairy, one of the crew walks up to Raul "What the hell does the Captain have in mind with rat hole? ... Place looks to pretty for us, in fact we never came here before, any idea what's on the Captains mind? Not really his place to ask but some sailor's grew steel balls when too long at sea and the need for a good whore.

In reply to Crew Member (msg # 3):

Raul looked the man over, he knew him, they called him The Little Bear (only because there was a larger one too).  Putting the knife away and standing to his full 5' 8" height he still had to look up to see the sailor's face behind his beard.

For a long second he doesn't say or do anything but eventually he shrugs a small silent shrug and points off the boat to the docks where he'd seen a few girls too pretty to be the daughters of dock workers moving in and out, "A ports a port." is all he mumbles before moving passed the man.

Having no one to patch up or needing his services as translator Maester Solveig stands quietly amidships, idly watching the unloading of another vessel's wares.  Occasionally he turns his keen gaze to those around him, casually observing what they are doing, before returning his attention to the ship which flies no colors.  Straightening out the creases in his robes he mutters to himself, "Could be trouble or nothing at all," as he takes a quick glance at who Raul is talking to.

Instead of worrying about the mystery ship, Hotho Thrice Drowned looked at the town with contempt. It was full of weak greenlanders getting fat while scorning the true path. Even those who did sail preferred to fish or trade. He spat over the rail in disgust as he waited for a response.

Rhaella was dressed in her favorite outfit - one that would give most of the people who knew her from court a heart attack. Her Lion-lizard leather armor closely matched her form and a sword hung from her side. As she approached the conversation the steel cap of her cane made a series of distinctive rythmic thuds on the deck of their longship, a smile gracing her charming features as she spoke to her uncle.

"We are here for a reason, Uncle Hotho. The details have been kept quite obscure so far, but we won't be heading back to the Iron Isles yet - there is blood in the water and we should act quickly."

She then glared over to the other docked ship, the one not flying any colors, suspicion evident on her traits.

"I don't know about these fellas though, we better keep an eye open for trouble."

On the first evening a keelboat approaches the ship. One man at its bow with a lantern and three others. They are signaling your ship, a common practice to show they mean no harm. On board the keelboat are two heavily armored men and a well dressed Dorn Noble.

"I am Lord Perros Kolwyn, and I am here to speak with your Bitch Blood Thirsty Captain Rhaella Saltwind, .... "  Lor Kolwyn knows she doesn't like to be treated so lady like in front of her crew so Perros plays the roll of a hard ass, ....

Raul was on deck at night he preferred the quiet and years of moving around in the dark have blessed him with unnaturally good night vision.  He leans over the side of the ship to take a look at the trio briefly before leaning back.  He wasn't fond of anyone referring to his captain in that manner so a lesson was going to be taught.

He pitched the rope ladder over the edge but left a few inches of slack on deck so the first man to pull on it to climb up would have a brief little drop before the ladder secured itself.

One of the guards starts to climb up first, As he places his weight on the rope latter and the slack gives way a thump and knack of armor against the ship is heard. Raul waits to see if a splash is next but not luck. Then Raul notices the rope pulled on a few times to make sure is nice and tight, and a the head of the first guard peek over the side of the deck. Once up he takes a stand too one side as a second boards then the Dorn Noble.

They say nothing as the guards scope the deck, with open palms on their hilts. The Lord speaks up again "So your captain she on board? She is expecting me."

Once at Rhaella's door he knocks and waits for a reply.

Rhaella took the time to give her uncle a sly grin and a witty remark - as well as a small hint of what was to come before addressing the greenlander lord.

"What can I say? I know where there is an opportunity to be found, and know how to create one when need be. In this case however, we won't be the sharks, we'll be the shark fishers."

She then glared towards the keel of the sheep where Lord Kolwyn was boarding the ship, although she had a good enough understanding of the situation to guess that the Dornishman did what he did out of consideration of Rhaella's standing with her fellow ironborn.

"Uncle, do you have any idea how the greenlander softlings treat noble ladies? I'd rather not have half the crew keel over laughing while he tries to treat me like a fragile flower - although he did lay it on too thick in my opinion. Anyway, I'd better make sure my brother doesn't get to sensitive about me getting mistaken for his Ship's Captain."

And with that she strode forward in a determined manner, her cane tucked under he arm as she intercepted Raul who was heading for her cabin.

"If I'm not mistaken, our guest has arrived, hasn't he Raul?"

Rhaella simply smirked at Perros as she shook his hand and tapped him on the shoulder with her free hand.

"Yes, I have a location suitable for that, I'll guide you there shortly."

She then quickly turned to Hotho.

"Uncle, see if you can wake my brother. If he doesn't seem able to join us within the next five minutes you'll join us instead."

Not an unlikely case, seeing that Simon seemed quite enamored with that lysene wine they had acquired recently. And as she thought about that, she thought that it would be appropriate to bring some refreshements. So she turned to one of her handmaidens - she had brought a few loyal female thralls with her to tend to tasks that couldn't be left to men.

"Azira, please fetch us a bottle of lysene sweet red and some goblets."

He extends his hand in friendship to greet the Captain properly. Lord Perros offers a warriors hand shake. "Well Captain I guess this moment is full of apologies"...

"I thought", said in a question "your sister was captain?" and again smiles. Allow me to start again.

"I am Lord Perros Kolwyn first of my name and Defender of The People. I have come this late hour to privately discuss new terms. The un-marked ship is my newest vessel and I will need two things form the Saltwinds, ..... to train those on board to be sailors .... and to go to King's Landing. Lord Perros removed a message from his side, "Form Lord Daemon Saltwind" ....

Message by Raven

It is with great dis-pleasure that I must take you and your brother away from your Old Ways and represent our house at King's Landing. There will be a joining of Prince Daeron of House Targaryen, & Princess Myriah Martell of Dorne in marriage.

Attend this event and stay closed to our new allies in the east, The Kowlyn's. They are honorable and do not stand against our beliefs as Ironborn, thou no man that worships the 'Seven' can truly be trusted. Lord Perros has not shown otherwise.

Remember we are Ironborn but wish to join the fold in the Crownlands.

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Rhaella simply smiled and shrugged when Lord Perros realized that he had made a mistake concerning the identity of the ship's Captain.

"There was little point in correcting you while my brother was not yet here as it didn't bring anything to the conversation. And I did like the sound of 'Captain Rhaella Saltwind'. But let me introduce my brother, Simon Saltwind, second son of Daemon Saltwind, Captain of the Swept Waters and of the Reavers."

She then explained why she would be the one to represent their house at the wedding, and not the Captain of the illustrious Reavers. And why she took an active role in these negotiations.

"My brother is a great warrior and leader of men, which is why he's captain of such a formidable fighting force. However when it comes to diplomacy, dealmaking and the matters of the court he's very much a typical Ironborn, whereas I have been quite attentive at my Grandmother's lessons, despite being an Ironborn at heart as well."

She then intertwined her fingers before herself, elbows propped on the table as she looked lord Perros right in the eye, as she explained why they would be reluctant to accept to train the Kolwyn sailors.

"Concerning your suggestion of us training your men, it is most unusual, and since the training we can deliver is that of true raiders, it includes the risk of creating competition - competition that is in a much more favorable geographical position."

She then brushed her right hand to the side, as if pushing that thought aside and a grin split her lips.

"Now, I understand that that is not your intention, but that thought will crop up amongst our subjects. However that could be be prevented... if we were to train future raiding partners - as blood spilt together is the strongest bond after blood shared. It would also deal with the question of how you could pay the Iron Price for our training."

Then her smile turned mischievous as she continued to explain how she envisioned her idea, pacing her delivery like a storyteller building up suspense for the big reveal or a punchline.

"Of course, if you are half as honorable as I've heard, you'd be reticent to simply go and raid essosi merchantmen. However, we have a favorite type of prey that most Westerosi loathe as much as we do : slavers."

She then gestured towards the door as she produced evidence of House Saltwind's loathing of Slavers.

"Have you looked at the crew when you arrived? More than a few of the Reavers were once slaves in Essos who proved themselves worthy of becoming followers of the Drowned God when we put their former masters into chains."

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Hotho followed Simon into the meeting. He was pleased to see the greenlander apologise for his behaviour. After Rhaella provided the charm, it was his duty to provide the truth (and get a better deal for both the Drowned God and his house). Winding himself up to his full height he began to preach at the greenlander and his niece.

"Were these men born with salt air in their lungs? Did they learn to walk on the shifting planks of a boat or on your dry land? Do they fear dying in the water and refuse to wear armour in case they fall or do they know the drowned god will receive them?

You can train a man to sail a ship and to fight on a ship but you can not train him to be a sailor. He will never be mistaken for someone who is born to it.

If you want sailors then give us a hundred boys whose voices have not yet cracked and we will return perhaps fifty sailors who would almost be the equal of an Ironborn. The rest will have proven themselves unworthy - we will return those thralls who survive."

In reply to Simon Saltwind (msg # 24):

"None we set sail tomorrow to Blackhaven then some will travel by land and others sea to Kings Landing. This maiden voyage will be the crews first real venture at sea."

Facing Hotho Thrice, not even realizing he was in the room, Lord Perros gives a simple reply "You will not have my people as thralls nor will you bring your faith to our people, ... I can respect your Old Ways but will not tolerate treachery of the will of others forced on those I have sworn to protect."

"However I am no stranger to what makes a man, and I have no love for slavers, I would be willing to entertain the offer of working together in the eastern lands to free those that are enslaved. I do have a few conditions that will need to be drawn to paper if we are to have an alliance."

"Payment can be given by the 'Iron Price' .... on the field like Rhaella has suggested." Lord Perros will not give to demands, especially those that place his position and people in peril. He is known as the 'Protector' to many in Dorne, and his reach stretches to the western boarders and the Princes Pass. His banner men are spread out but loyal and he would never do anything to those the values.

Once the meeting had begun and moved itself behind closed doors Raul made himself busy on the aft end of the ship.  He'd been meaning to practice his throwing anyway and now seemed as good a time as any.

Using the knife he'd so recently acquired the silent man etched out a target along the railing and, taking six steps back, began to hurl his hand axes at the mark.

The steady thunkthunk was paused as he went to retrieve his weapons.  A small grunt of dissatisfaction at missing the target and again thunkthunk as the axes found a home in the wood.

Ah, it seemed that Lord Perros did not enjoy her Uncle's tone. She understood why he'd be suspicious, but if he wanted to deal with Ironborn he'd have to deal with a lot of that kind of talk - which was probably why he prefered to talk to her.

"Proselytizing in foreign lands is not something in the habits of the Ironborn, so there shouldn't be any problem on that front. My uncle is just exceedingly zealous about any possible threat to our way of life."

She then leaned forward and asked for the man to elaborate.

"Now... What conditions did you have in mind?"

She then slowly turned to her brother and her glare met his eyes, unflinching, her smile frozen on her lips in a way that radiated displeasure.

"And Brother? Please elaborate and provide suggestions when you have an objection. As Lord Kolwyn noted, we do not have all week."

Lord Perros is known to be quick tempered and a bit of a hot head at time. Just the fact that he did not even get a response was very strange to him, perhaps he did not know enough about the ironborn to make the impression he wanted and win them over.

Rolling out of his berth Raul stretches out as best he can before his hand does what it does every morning and runs along the jagged scar across his neck.  In his dreams its never there...with a sigh the Ironborn sailor throws on a coat with a high collar and straps his handaxes to his belt before heading out to the deck.

A quick look around and its clear the men have no idea what is going on so he decides to get his orders from the source.  Walking in to the Captain's Quarters he knocks twice before opening the door, "Cap'n" he begins by way of greeting, "Whats the order?"

In reply to Simon Saltwind (msg # 37):

"Aye Sir." came Raul's almost whispered reply.  Turning to leave the raider heads out of the captain's quarters and sets about getting the men on board awake and preparing the ship to sail.

Before that however it was time to raise the cook and see about breakfast...the Captain did say to take their time after all.

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Rhaella felt weary and conflicted. Her valyrian side wanted to jump at the opportunity, exploit this chance to advance their familly's current plots... But her Ironborn side was too bewildered by the whole thing... And knew that many of their crew would have far stronger feelings about the whole affair. She couldn't refuse the offer... Yet accepting it was likewise impossible. Not to mention that it put Kolwyn in an unconfortable situation he wasn't used to. Partially a trick to exert pressure on him, partially petty vengeance for him putting them in a similar situation.

"It would be best to still escort them as previously agreed brother, our father has already given his word for that much. Kolwyn's proposal seems pretty good, but it's a deal made with a greenlander perspective. Uncle Hotho won't be the only to strongly disagree to the idea..."

She let out a frustrated snarl as she planted he dagger in the railing.

"We are Ironborn first and foremost. We can't accept that deal without the full support of your crew, otherwise trouble and dissent will spread through them like a brewing storm. Hm... Convincing the crew would be easier if we had visible proof of the benefits of a partnership with the Kolwyns."

She then had a sudden idea, starting to become thoughtful as she removed the dagger from the railing and resheathed it.

"Yes, perhaps we should let the Drowned God decide. If this expedition brings a satisfying Iron Price, then he shows his favor to the whole endeavor. If it doesn't... Well no point in extending this partnership."

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Still being moored Simon stared over at the other vessel. Raising sails while being anchored could be very bad for the bulwark of the vessel and its integrity.

He felt that he could control them easily.

Turning around he surveyed his trusted cadre to see which people to place aboard the vessel with himself as well.
The Ironborn could basically sail without a captain if need be.

"A wise suggestion niece. If the drowned god smiles on this partnership my brother desires then he will show us. If he does not, then we can let this madness quietly sink."

Hotho turned away, knowing that was the last word on the matter. He looked around, seeking out the maester again.

"So now what do you think of why we are here?" he asked trying to keep his distaste for the deal out of his voice.

After breakfast Raul made his way back up on deck and found the Captain with his family.  Moving up beside him the raider puts a bowl of stew and a chunk of bread in front of him, "Breakfast Captain?"

It wasn't hard to see what everyone was eyeing and it wasn't too hard to figure out what was going on over there either but it wasn't Raul's place to make suggestions, just follow orders.

As the crew make preparations Solvieg slowly strolls about the vessel seeking to give immediate assistance to any sailors that need a hand.  Unlike many of his more "refined" brethren he is not adverse to the daily toils of life, especially aboard a raiding ship.  He hardly finishes one task before swiftly seeking another, all the while checking about to see if any of the command crew require his services.

Turning he moves across the deck until he finds the leader of the Reavers, "Captain wants us to set sail, shadow the Dornish ship." he says before moving on to start hoisting sail and securing lines, on a ship after all everyone works.

The men begin to get ready and quickly so not to loss the wind. The one of the many ironborn sailors - barefoot and all, climb the masts and prep the ropes and sails. In no time flat the sails catch wind and in good time as the Kolwyn ship is still in sight.

The men seems happy to get back to sea, floating in those water with no wine or ale and no women was making them restless.

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

The crew of the Reaver and its captain are no fools too tracking a ship. They have had enough practice at it these last few years and shadowing the Kolwyn ship was all to easy. They never changed wind to see if anyone was following them. They never dropped sail to hide their speed - if they needed to get away. Rookie mistakes that if they were in hostile waters it would have coast them their lives. or if they were good fighter a few lives.

Simon Saltwind Capt. of the 'Reaver' know this as soon as it happened, and the crew were only wishing they could night attach this ship and take it wonderful known cargo. Of course that would make them wanted by every captain of Westeros and maybe even jump start a Dorne war so this thought could not be realized as they know that as well ..... with the spoils they have already collected and sent home they were not exactly interested in never going back.

The Capt. and its crew need to make a discussion, sail in or stay out at sea, as the Kolwyn ship has reached their destination and are dropped anchor. They are going to unload their cargo.

Its mid-day and a The Storm God seems to be sending them a treat, as the sky is turning gray and the clouds are moving fast.

Raul waits a few moments for the rest of the crew to speak up.  Technically he wasn't staff, just a crew member, as such it wasn't his place to put his opinion on the table unless asked specifically for it.

Instead he kept busy cleaning up after lunch and wishing silently that he had a reason to sharpen his axe.  They'd plundered more than any crew he'd been with so far but even so it had been far too long since they had gone on an honest hunt and the raider was feeling dulled.

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

"I Sir, you heard the captain, ...... take us out of this storm, The Storm God as no prize today, .... and the Water Halls will have to wait to see you bastards feasting."

The heavy dark clouds rolls in and the storm winds are becoming stronger. The wave are starting to crash on deck and the crew are sometimes tossed around. None fall over but the storm is pretty bad and the ship is not fast enough to circle around.

The storm had actually circled around from inland and at sea has picked up more force. This is way these parts are called the Stormlands.

OOC Notes:
OOC: please roll for the sailing again.

also if you like I would recommend rolling some type of influences to motivate the crew. RPing this will also work and no roll would be needed based on your RP post.

He inhaled deeply before the voice boomed over the main deck.

"Helmsman get us underway. Hand over fist men, this is not an exercise, move it you scallywags. You all know your ropes, get to it, tie down the hatches make her ready lads. We know this would be no plain sailing, lets not like three sheets to the wind in front of the drowned one. Reavers, move it!"

The Reavers are manning the ship well but the storm is fast and the rain is heavy. The winds are violent and starting to toss the ship as the waves crash on deck. There is little choice now the ship must sail through the storm or be toss on its side and sink to the bottom of the sea.

The crew awaits there orders from the captain, ................

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Simon Saltwind Capt. of the 'Reaver' looks out into the dark clouds and "Stormlord I challenge you to take us!"

"Turn her into the wind we sail through this beast, .... if Our Drown Lord wills us to the bottom of the sea I will meet you all for a drink beside or ancestors as we feast in the halls of our fathers."

Hotho Thrice reaches into his pouch of religious items and takes out a black heavy oil. He walks to the Capt. dipping his thumb into the holy ointment and passing it along the bridge of the Captains nose. Some of the men stop to watch the holy man bless their Capt. "Let Simon Saltwind your servant be victorious in this day as he challenges your enemy the Stormlord. Bless him this day."

The Capt. replies "What is dead may never die." AS Hotho responds "What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger."

The waves are getting larger and they swell 30 feet over the deck. The crew slips and slides across the desk. Many start to tie themselves in, just in case they go over the side, they can be pulled back in. The day has turned to night, but not because the sun is not out, but because the Stormlord is not allowing it to break the through the clouds.
