Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Rhaella took the time to give her uncle a sly grin and a witty remark - as well as a small hint of what was to come before addressing the greenlander lord.

"What can I say? I know where there is an opportunity to be found, and know how to create one when need be. In this case however, we won't be the sharks, we'll be the shark fishers."

She then glared towards the keel of the sheep where Lord Kolwyn was boarding the ship, although she had a good enough understanding of the situation to guess that the Dornishman did what he did out of consideration of Rhaella's standing with her fellow ironborn.

"Uncle, do you have any idea how the greenlander softlings treat noble ladies? I'd rather not have half the crew keel over laughing while he tries to treat me like a fragile flower - although he did lay it on too thick in my opinion. Anyway, I'd better make sure my brother doesn't get to sensitive about me getting mistaken for his Ship's Captain."

And with that she strode forward in a determined manner, her cane tucked under he arm as she intercepted Raul who was heading for her cabin.

"If I'm not mistaken, our guest has arrived, hasn't he Raul?"

In reply to Rhaella Saltwind (msg # 15):

Raul looks from Rhaella to the Dornishmen and then back before nodding.  One final glance at them and he scowls a bit, "they're rude…" is his only comment before falling into step behind the 'Captain' to act as something of a bodyguard.

"The valyrian blood flows fierce in your veins. You bear all the markings of your forefathers. ..... I have come to finalize terms can we speak in private?"

As he extends his hand in friendship. "You come in the wake of many events. Have you heard we are no longer fighting. In fact King Baelor, the Beloved has requested every house to send one to attend a wedding at King's Landing."

The crew has been out at sea for some time the only knowledge some may know is Baelor had begun his reign by walking the Boneway barefoot to make peace with Dorne.

Rhaella simply smirked at Perros as she shook his hand and tapped him on the shoulder with her free hand.

"Yes, I have a location suitable for that, I'll guide you there shortly."

She then quickly turned to Hotho.

"Uncle, see if you can wake my brother. If he doesn't seem able to join us within the next five minutes you'll join us instead."

Not an unlikely case, seeing that Simon seemed quite enamored with that lysene wine they had acquired recently. And as she thought about that, she thought that it would be appropriate to bring some refreshements. So she turned to one of her handmaidens - she had brought a few loyal female thralls with her to tend to tasks that couldn't be left to men.

"Azira, please fetch us a bottle of lysene sweet red and some goblets."

Lord Perros looks at the wine and then drinks. At first he thought poison, but then he forgot they were Ironborn and if they wanted him dead they would finish him from the front with a dagger.

"Thank you the wine is delicious, My apologies for my rude behavior in front of the crew but I felt it wise to through the sent off my real reason for being hear. A few new events have arisen, I have paid a fare sum to protect or trade ship and even use our ship as bait to sack those that may try to stand in the way. I know, so what of the iron price that most be paid? But I now have to ask for new terms. It seem that those that were once allies are slowly becomes our enemies. The un-marked ship is my newest vessel and I will need two things form the Saltwinds, .....to train those on board to be the best at sea and to fight like sailors .... and to go to King's Landing."

".... how much time do you have."

says the Captain of the Reaver stepping into the conversation with two of his personal bodyguards in their plain attire behind him.

"Saltwind be my name and I am the cap of this wee ship."

He smiled his dangerous smile and hooked both thumbs in his broad belt.

In reply to Simon Saltwind (msg # 20):

"Captain? ... But I was told that Rhaella Saltwind was, .... And you allowed me to think you were, ...." Lord Peros smiles "beautiful, intelligent, and cunning very dangerous"

He extends his hand in friendship to greet the Captain properly. Lord Perros offers a warriors hand shake. "Well Captain I guess this moment is full of apologies"...

"I thought", said in a question "your sister was captain?" and again smiles. Allow me to start again.

"I am Lord Perros Kolwyn first of my name and Defender of The People. I have come this late hour to privately discuss new terms. As I have explained to Lady Rhaella, it seems that those that were once allies are slowly becoming my enemies. The un-marked ship is my newest vessel and I will need two things form the Saltwinds, ..... to train those on board to be sailors .... and to go to King's Landing. My understanding is that every house by order of King Baelor the Blessed are required to send no less then one member of their house to attend the wedding of Prince Daeron of House Targaryen, & Princess Myriah Martell of Dorne. My understanding is that your house has chosen one of you to do the honors,... Perhaps that is were my misunderstanding come from as Lady Rhaella Saltwind was named to do so if able."
Lord Perros removed a message from his side, "Form Lord Daemon Saltwind" ....

Message by Raven

It is with great dis-pleasure that I must take you and your brother away from your Old Ways and represent our house at King's Landing. There will be a joining of Prince Daeron of House Targaryen, & Princess Myriah Martell of Dorne in marriage.

Attend this event and stay closed to our new allies in the east, The Kowlyn's. They are honorable and do not stand against our beliefs as Ironborn, thou no man that worships the 'Seven' can truly be trusted. Lord Perros has not shown otherwise.

Remember we are Ironborn but wish to join the fold in the Crownlands.

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Rhaella simply smiled and shrugged when Lord Perros realized that he had made a mistake concerning the identity of the ship's Captain.

"There was little point in correcting you while my brother was not yet here as it didn't bring anything to the conversation. And I did like the sound of 'Captain Rhaella Saltwind'. But let me introduce my brother, Simon Saltwind, second son of Daemon Saltwind, Captain of the Swept Waters and of the Reavers."

She then explained why she would be the one to represent their house at the wedding, and not the Captain of the illustrious Reavers. And why she took an active role in these negotiations.

"My brother is a great warrior and leader of men, which is why he's captain of such a formidable fighting force. However when it comes to diplomacy, dealmaking and the matters of the court he's very much a typical Ironborn, whereas I have been quite attentive at my Grandmother's lessons, despite being an Ironborn at heart as well."

She then intertwined her fingers before herself, elbows propped on the table as she looked lord Perros right in the eye, as she explained why they would be reluctant to accept to train the Kolwyn sailors.

"Concerning your suggestion of us training your men, it is most unusual, and since the training we can deliver is that of true raiders, it includes the risk of creating competition - competition that is in a much more favorable geographical position."

She then brushed her right hand to the side, as if pushing that thought aside and a grin split her lips.

"Now, I understand that that is not your intention, but that thought will crop up amongst our subjects. However that could be be prevented... if we were to train future raiding partners - as blood spilt together is the strongest bond after blood shared. It would also deal with the question of how you could pay the Iron Price for our training."

Then her smile turned mischievous as she continued to explain how she envisioned her idea, pacing her delivery like a storyteller building up suspense for the big reveal or a punchline.

"Of course, if you are half as honorable as I've heard, you'd be reticent to simply go and raid essosi merchantmen. However, we have a favorite type of prey that most Westerosi loathe as much as we do : slavers."

She then gestured towards the door as she produced evidence of House Saltwind's loathing of Slavers.

"Have you looked at the crew when you arrived? More than a few of the Reavers were once slaves in Essos who proved themselves worthy of becoming followers of the Drowned God when we put their former masters into chains."

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Hotho followed Simon into the meeting. He was pleased to see the greenlander apologise for his behaviour. After Rhaella provided the charm, it was his duty to provide the truth (and get a better deal for both the Drowned God and his house). Winding himself up to his full height he began to preach at the greenlander and his niece.

"Were these men born with salt air in their lungs? Did they learn to walk on the shifting planks of a boat or on your dry land? Do they fear dying in the water and refuse to wear armour in case they fall or do they know the drowned god will receive them?

You can train a man to sail a ship and to fight on a ship but you can not train him to be a sailor. He will never be mistaken for someone who is born to it.

If you want sailors then give us a hundred boys whose voices have not yet cracked and we will return perhaps fifty sailors who would almost be the equal of an Ironborn. The rest will have proven themselves unworthy - we will return those thralls who survive."

Simon kept silent and listened well, he knew that if he would train the men he could make them loyal only to his command. But his sisters remarks carried some truths as well, and so did Hothos.

He restated his earlier question:

"How much time do you have Lord."

In reply to Simon Saltwind (msg # 24):

"None we set sail tomorrow to Blackhaven then some will travel by land and others sea to Kings Landing. This maiden voyage will be the crews first real venture at sea."

Facing Hotho Thrice, not even realizing he was in the room, Lord Perros gives a simple reply "You will not have my people as thralls nor will you bring your faith to our people, ... I can respect your Old Ways but will not tolerate treachery of the will of others forced on those I have sworn to protect."

"However I am no stranger to what makes a man, and I have no love for slavers, I would be willing to entertain the offer of working together in the eastern lands to free those that are enslaved. I do have a few conditions that will need to be drawn to paper if we are to have an alliance."

"Payment can be given by the 'Iron Price' .... on the field like Rhaella has suggested." Lord Perros will not give to demands, especially those that place his position and people in peril. He is known as the 'Protector' to many in Dorne, and his reach stretches to the western boarders and the Princes Pass. His banner men are spread out but loyal and he would never do anything to those the values.

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Once the meeting had begun and moved itself behind closed doors Raul made himself busy on the aft end of the ship.  He'd been meaning to practice his throwing anyway and now seemed as good a time as any.

Using the knife he'd so recently acquired the silent man etched out a target along the railing and, taking six steps back, began to hurl his hand axes at the mark.

The steady thunkthunk was paused as he went to retrieve his weapons.  A small grunt of dissatisfaction at missing the target and again thunkthunk as the axes found a home in the wood.

Re: IC: The Shores of Kolwyn

Ah, it seemed that Lord Perros did not enjoy her Uncle's tone. She understood why he'd be suspicious, but if he wanted to deal with Ironborn he'd have to deal with a lot of that kind of talk - which was probably why he prefered to talk to her.

"Proselytizing in foreign lands is not something in the habits of the Ironborn, so there shouldn't be any problem on that front. My uncle is just exceedingly zealous about any possible threat to our way of life."

She then leaned forward and asked for the man to elaborate.

"Now... What conditions did you have in mind?"

She then slowly turned to her brother and her glare met his eyes, unflinching, her smile frozen on her lips in a way that radiated displeasure.

"And Brother? Please elaborate and provide suggestions when you have an objection. As Lord Kolwyn noted, we do not have all week."

"My conditions are easily meet, I place my man as captain since the ship was not taken with the Iron Price and it's captian should be of Dorne" as his sips his drink. "My ship will be in service to you for the purpose to free slaves and take down priates that threaten Westeros vessels you can interpute this as you see fit, but I do recommend not to be reckless" he starts to walk the and look about within the cabin. "Lastly my mechant ships and those I trade with will sail under my banner and your protection, with the my flag ship at your side." Lord Perros Kolwyn seems like a smart man, and so far he hasn't shown any ill will.

"Basically you will protect what's mine and my interest and in return you can keep the spoils, and earn your keep by the Old Ways. The training of the men will be by two members of your crew that will earn the respect of my people and again in return their serve as free men of Dorne and fight with the ironborn."

"We both win in this agreement, .... I gain protection and skilled sailors, you earn and have a place to rest on the eastern shores, ..... much closer to Essos and away from the northern eyes that watch you so closly."

The lord has circled the cabin, then turns to Capt. Simon Saltwind of the 'Reaver', "I see you need more time to think about my offer." Perros did not think that they would need to give it a second thought, he felt the agreement was more then far.

Lord Perros is known to be quick tempered and a bit of a hot head at time. Just the fact that he did not even get a response was very strange to him, perhaps he did not know enough about the ironborn to make the impression he wanted and win them over.

"I have never had no reply to a question, but before I become insulted I will leave." .... "Gaurds, ...." The lord gives them a hand signal that they are leaving. As the lord reaches the threshhold of the doorway he turns back to Rhaella Saltwind, "You live an interesting life, I thought differently, ..... of you and your house, but regardless you are welcomed to stay and by the time my ship sails I expect my shores to be claer of all ships."

They board back onto their keelboat and sail back to the docks.

Hotho waited until Lord Perros and his guards were safely off the ship. He spoke plainly as he always did, delivering each sentence like he was driving a nail.

"I am glad he is gone.

I mislike him and his merchant ways.

Whatever he has planned is not to our gain.

Let us leave this port with the next tide. There may yet be time to find a prize on the way to this wedding."

The night passes - all the men stay on board not really knowing if Lord Peros can be trusted after the talks. The sun raise to heavy activities on the docks and small keelboats loading the over sized war galley they have. It looks fast for its size but the only real way to know if she's any good will be at sea.

Now is the time, do the Ironborn try to work with this Lord Kowlyn or do they pass on what seems to be to good, ..............

After taking the night watch Raul was slow to rise in the morning.  The activity on the docks makes sleeping in hard however and before he knows it his dreams have fled for the harsh reality of the day.

Rolling out of his berth Raul stretches out as best he can before his hand does what it does every morning and runs along the jagged scar across his neck.  In his dreams its never there...with a sigh the Ironborn sailor throws on a coat with a high collar and straps his handaxes to his belt before heading out to the deck.

A quick look around and its clear the men have no idea what is going on so he decides to get his orders from the source.  Walking in to the Captain's Quarters he knocks twice before opening the door, "Cap'n" he begins by way of greeting, "Whats the order?"

The Captain still was uncertain and was really looking for his sisters advice on the political position with regards to the House Kolwyn.
The Ironborn were strong and independent-no help was needed.
The Reavers were strong enough to prosper on their own.

"Ready the ship to sail, dont make haste though."

He answered his sailor.
