Dorne

House Martell is one of the Great Houses of Westeros. It rules the peninsula of Dorne in the far south of the continent from their castle Sunspear. Though loyal to the Iron Throne, it has pursued a more isolated role.

House Martell's sigil is a red sun pierced by a golden spear, on an orange field. Its words are, "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken."

House Blackmont is a vassal house which holds fealty to House Martell of Dorne. Their seat is the eponymous castle of Blackmont. House Blackmont's sigil is a flying vulture proper, with a baby in its talons, on a gold field.

House Dalt is a vassal house which holds fealty to House Martell of Dorne. Their seat is at Lemonwood. House Dalt's heraldry contains yellow wild lemons strewn on a purple field.

House Dayne is a noble house from Dorne. They are vassals to House Martell of Sunspear. Their seat is the castle of Starfall. Their ancestral weapon is Dawn, a blade forged from the metal of a fallen star. The Dayne knight that bears the sword is granted the title of "the Sword of the Morning".

House Qorgyle is a vassal house which holds fealty to House Martell of Dorne. Their seat is at Sandstone. House Qorgyle's heraldry consists of three black scorpions on a red field.

House Jordyane is a vassal house which holds fealty to House Martell of Dorne. Their seat is the Tor. House Jordayne's sigil is a golden quill on checkered dark and light green.

House Uller is a vassal house sworn to House Martell of Sunspear. Their seat is Hellholt.

House Santagar is a vassal house sworn to House Martell of Sunspear. They are established in Dorne.

Re: Dorne

Dorne is one of the nine constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms. It is the southernmost part of the continent of Westeros, located thousands of miles from Winterfell and the North, and has a harsh desert climate. The Dornishmen are ethnically distinct from the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, being largely descended from Rhoynar refugees who intermarried with the local population of Andals and First Men roughly a thousand years ago. As a result they have very different customs and traditions compared to the other regions of Westeros.

Dorne  was a sovereign kingdom before the invasion of Aegon the Conqueror, and weathered his attack to remain one afterwards, the only one of the Seven Kingdoms to retain its independence. It joins the Seven Kingdoms through peaceful marriage alliance. As a result of joining through marriage and not conquest, Dorne has been allowed to keep many of its local customs and laws, such as equal inheritance laws for male and female heirs. Due to these different ethnic, legal, and political factors, the Dornishmen are very independently minded, with a stronger sense of "national identity" than many of the other Seven Kingdoms.

Location
southeastern Westeros

Geography
Parched, temperate to arid; mountains (west), rolling-sands deserts (center),
semi-arid hills punctuated by river valleys (east).

Population
Dornishmen, also known as Dornish, are the inhabitants of Dorne, one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Like the Northmen and the ironborn, the Dornish have a unique culture, law, and ethnic background, the result of the intermingling between the Westerosi inhabitants - predominantly of Andal origins - and the Rhoynar invaders that escaped Essos to avoid conquest by the Valyrian Freehold.

Due to their Rhoynar blood, Dornishmen tend towards olive skin, black hair, and dark eyes. In the rest of the Seven Kingdoms they have a reputation for being hot-blooded and sexually licentious.

Re: Dorne

Dorne History Continued

Dorne had long been a source of frustration to the Targaryens. Upon taking the throne in 157 AC, the young King Daeron I, marched south and brought the Dornishmen to battle, quickly defeating them. The eldest son of Aegon III, Daeron was a bright and talented young man, who wrote eloquently of his achievements in The Conquest of Dorne, and led his troops with great bravery, despite being only fourteen years old when he took the throne.

It is said The Conquest of Dorne lasted but a summer and that the Young Dragon spent ten thousand men taking Dorne and lost fifty thousand trying to hold it. As before, the Dornishmen proved cunning and all but impossible to rule. The Lord of Highgarden was entrusted with governing the fractious people, and he spent much of his time chasing down elusive rebels, moving from estate to estate and displacing local lords from their homes. One night, he pulled on a sash to summon a servant but instead opened up the canopy over his bed, sending a rain of a hundred red scorpions down on his head. At the news of Highgarden’s death, the Dornishmen rose in rebellion, and in a fortnight, they had driven out the Targaryens and regained their freedom, which they would retain.

Now thirty-six years Dorne is now expected to join the Seven Kingdoms by marriage.

Dorne Settlements

The Town of Skyreach

Skyreach: itself is a rather small town. It is situated on a plateau in the highest section of the pass. It doesn’t have much in the way of defences because of its strategic position and because enemies rarely penetrate so deeply into the pass. Skyreach is home to around three-thousand inhabitants, most of which are craftsmen and goods peddlers. The town is divided into 4 quarters, each of them are little more than couple of streets.

The Merchant Quarter: is located near the main entrance of the town and consists of the main square and a few narrow market streets surrounding it. There are some relatively lavish establishments which serve a wealthier clientele located around the square. The rest of the Merchant quarter consists of narrow market streets, many of them covered by overhangs. Along the narrow streets the merchants own small shops from where they sell their myriad of wares. The merchants themselves live in small apartments above the shops. Although the streets are narrow and placed in an irregular and zigzag pattern the quarter isn’t large enough to get truly lost in. The more affluent merchants have their establishments along the main roads of the town. Most of them specialize in clothing, jewelry, carpets and metal wares.

The Metalworkers Quarter: is located along the edges of the town and consists of two parallel streets that originate from the merchants quarter. The streets aren’t as narrow here as the merchant souks but are often filled with craftsmen plying their trade. The hammering of metal can constantly be heard throughout the quarters as many of the craftsman ply their trade either on the street or in open shops alongside it. Most craftsmen make simple domestic goods out of bronze and iron such as pots and pans but there are those that are true artists in their trade. Also a small number of armourers, weaponsmiths and jewellers can be found here.

The Tanner’s Quarter: is the smallest of the quarters and consists of little more than the communal Tannery in the north of the town and some leather workshops surrounding it. Quality leather is in good supply in the Red Mountains and the leatherworkers in the district are quite skilled. Yet most townsfolk avoid the district because of the smell coming from the tanneries.

The Central Quarter: is the main residential area located along the main street leading up to the castle. There are some wealthy mansions lying along the main road, but most of the houses in the quarter lying further from the main street are rather small. The Central quarter, despite its location is often rather quiet compared to the other quarters. There is a number of small septs located in the quarter but they’re not used that often.

The Castle Quarter: is one of the wealthiest of quarters, though it is also the place where most soldiers stay and spent their time. It is located the closest to Castle Skyreach and features many taverns, hostels and whorehouses for soldiers and travellers to spent their time in. Also some wealthy inhabitants live in this quarter, seeking the protection from the castle.
