I still don't think we are make the correct choice when it comes to the MG. The practicalities aside in relation to the ammunition it cannot be dismounted from the vehicle where is a M240 can and in fact comes with a kit to do just that.
I think in the long term being able to take the primary support weapon with us should we need to dismount and approach on foot cannot be over looked.
Actually you can dismount the .50 cal from the vehicle and fire it from a tripod. Any/every machine gun mounted to a U.S. Combat vehicle has a tripod stashed on the vehicle. I even listed it as cargo on the MRAP.
The big reason your going to want a .50 cal over a M-240 is the fact that unless its a tank you can kill any other ground vehicle that bad guys may be using. If you have a M-240 the 7.62mm rounds won't penetrate most armored vehicles.
The .50 has a slower rate of fire then a M-240 so you won't burn through ammo so quick.
Last is the fact that if I wanted you guys to have a machine gun in which you could walk around and fire with I'd have given you a M-249 SAW. This of course doesn't mean you guys won't find one......
