Re: Minutia

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 907):

Only a 1 in 10 chance of getting fucked over? Better odds than with a Classic Traveller Patron!

In CT, Patrons were wealthy and powerful NPCs, or sometimes with a good sob story, and they provided the PCs with some kind of job or assignment. Most were illegal activities of some sort (hey, it was the 70's and early 80's). Because they wanted some variability (and also probably assumed the crafty players read everything ahead of time) Patron "encounters" usually included a d6 roll to determine if everything really was on the up-and-up, or maybe things were different or opposite what they seemed. The odds were a given Patron might turn out to be screwing you over was therefore usually at a minimum of 1 and, say, 3-in-6. So 10% is not so bad!

I was kinda hoping you had WP Machine gun so I could give the PCs a .50 cal to go with the MRAP

Yeah 7.62 is common, but firing a .50 cal is awsome.

Yeah I need to add up exp.

Even if some people leveled up someone would have to teach you the new skill.

Re: Minutia

In order to make weapon outfitting easy everybody needs to PM with their choices. Some of you really don’t get choices, or have unique choices. I am going on the general assumption that your character isn’t going to carry around a weapon he or she doesn’t have the WP for (although everyone is going get a bayonet). I know some of you have WP archery (I guess you wannabe Daryl from walking Dead) but you guys will have to find that sort of thing elsewhere, because Rambo is the only guy in the US Military to get issued a bow and arrow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhtLA88hGQM (I just realized Rambo only kills Spetsnaz, Vietnamese and Burmese soldiers with his bow)

I will tally up EXP for the current thread once the group leaves Nellis Air Force Base.

Re: Minutia

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 916):

We are located on a major base, if we could learn anyplace it would be here! But I guess they aren't at the point of training civilians to use military weapons. (Plus we won't level up until after we leave.) But they might see the value if we survive and prove useful to them.

Yep, that Rambo is a heckuva dude with his bow! I've been in a few RPGs over the years (post-holocaust and modern) where someone has had a bow or crossbow. You know what? I don't recall them ever being used if there are firearms available. This includes the classic Katana. (This despite the fact that bow weapons and swords are quiet, you can make arrows, a high enough rated bow has penetration comparable to a firearm and a sword doesn't need ammunition.)

In reply to Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael (msg # 918):

There are ten PCs plenty of room for cross training. A machine gun is actually not that easy to learn. You screw up the headspace and timing on a .50 cal and the gun can blow up in your face.

Anyhow if someone had WP Machine gun you'd guys be getting one. I might give you guys two vehicles tho.

I still don't think we are make the correct choice when it comes to the MG. The practicalities aside in relation to the ammunition it cannot be dismounted from the vehicle where is a M240 can and in fact comes with a kit to do just that.

I think in the long term being able to take the primary support weapon with us should we need to dismount and approach on foot cannot be over looked.

Actually you can dismount the .50 cal from the vehicle and fire it from a tripod. Any/every machine gun mounted to a U.S. Combat vehicle has a tripod stashed on the vehicle. I even listed it as cargo on the MRAP.

The big reason your going to want a .50 cal over a M-240 is the fact that unless its a tank you can kill any other ground vehicle that bad guys may be using. If you have a M-240 the 7.62mm rounds won't penetrate most armored vehicles.

The .50 has a slower rate of fire then a M-240 so you won't burn through ammo so quick.

Last is the fact that if I wanted you guys to have a machine gun in which you could walk around and fire with I'd have given you a M-249 SAW. This of course doesn't mean you guys won't find one......

Re: Minutia

In reply to Jonathan Pembersley (msg # 921):

My PC wouldn't have an opinion.

The points in favour of a GPMG or SAW are good. Assuming we even get an MG at all!

Where a good ol' "cal-fifty" (aka Ma Deuce) really shows its stuff in comparison is against vehicles and structures. Sure it's not as man-portable, but we're not an infantry section (squad in US parlance) and don't necessarily need the dismounted firepower. (I posted this before reading DST's similar comments.)

As for ammunition we would be largely dependent on the military for resupply of .50 BMG. This also pertains to belted 7.62mmx51 NATO unless we want to mount a brass-catcher and collect all those disintegrating links. If we wanted a super-common round we'd be looking into .22 calibre weapons (as articulated in the awesome TV series "Z Nation").

Another FYI for you guys is that 9mm, 5.56mm and 12 gauge ammo is all fairly easy to come by.

I have also dropped a marker on the game map for the MRAP's location. You guys will have GPS until I decide the satellites go down.

Hiya,

Yeah, if we want more 12.7x99mm we gotta come see the Major.

My apologies, I don't see a map or map link?

As well, note to my fellow players: my PC wouldn't think of NVGs. But they could come in handy if there are any hanging around. Even old AN/PVS-5s. Just in case anyone else would like to suggest it.

FYI, only the tips of bayonets are sharpe. It's either due to the Geneva convention or because it's frowned upon for troops to sharpen them.  The tip is pointed is more then enough to stab into a person the two inches needed to damage an important organ you can't live without.

Ask? Converse IC where the characters State their driving abilities?
