Stockade Interview: Laney

In the morning the women are first let out of their cells and led to a showering facility. Once they return the men are allowed to do the same. Throughout the day each person in the stockade is taken into a room to speak with a USAF officer.

The room is quite simple and looks like the interrogation room from any one of the Law & Order TV shows. There is a single table and two chairs across from each other. There is also the mirrored wall, obviously a one way mirror. The only real difference from the TV show is a pair of USAF Airman in each corner behind the ‘detainee’.

Laney isn't hand cuffed or anything like that.

Across from Laney is a USAF Officer wearing a pair of gold oak leaves on his ABU’s (Airman Battle Uniform, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airman_Battle_Uniform ). He has a number of file folders in front of him.

“I’m Major Peterson, and you are?”

Stockade Interview: Laney

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 1):

Laney put her hands on the table in view and kept a respectful expression on her face. Regardless her own sense of righteous indignation at this unfair treatment, she sensed this wasn't a good person to goad or needle. She tried to keep her voice as neutral as possible.

"Lakeisha Rochelle Carmichael, sir. Social Security Number 517 33 9022."

"May I speak?"

Stockade Interview: Laney

“Hold on one second.” The USAF officer thumbs through the files until he finds the one he’s looking for. “It looks like you didn’t want to give up much needed medical supplies and asked for a civil affairs officer.”

“Well we don’t have any civil affairs officers. They either died of the flu or the Zombies  got them.”

“As for the medical supplies it boils down to this: With medical supplies in short supply any medical supplies brought in is to be confiscated so we can put it to use in treating people who are still infected with the flu, injured, or the bitten.”

Stockade Interview: Laney

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 3):

Keeping a respectful tone she explained, "Sir, I only wanted to apologise to those fine folks just doin' their jobs. There weren't no call for me to be actin' out.

"Begging your pardon, sir. I was told all my gear would be taken away and not returned, not just supplies. Look, sir, I am a trained "first responder". When I was picked up I was doing my duty. That means like you, I was treating people who were still infected with the flu, injured or bitten. Right now, I'm useless. Benching an experienced medical asset just so you get your hands on a few things seems kind of wasteful. Sir. There are FEMA warehouses full of medical supplies, hospitals, you name it. You ain't gonna find more paramedics stashed away somewhere.

"More people are coming, I hope. I guess you should probably look into getting a new Civil Affairs officer then. And whoever's telling people to come here should also mention something about Martial Law. I don't recollect being told that when we landed, either. There are a few legalities regarding Martial Law in the Nevada state Constitution that should be observed, if that's important to you, sir. I served in New Orleans during Katrina so I've been to this rodeo before, I could be a lot of help if you let me.

"I'd just like to apologise for my behaviour. If you want to keep me on the sidelines that's your choice. If it were up to me, I'd rather be back out there, trying to help people. Not sit on my hands here like a refugee or a criminal, just another mouth to feed."

Through this she kept her voice calm and thoughtful, trying not to betray any undue emotion or seem like she was pleading.

"Look, I got a clean record, commendations. It was tough when my husband, Greg Carmichael, was in the Army. Served in Afghanistan. Came home, then took his life. It got tougher then. I had to live on the streets after we, I, lost the house, then got a job with the ambulance service. But I made it through. All I'm asking for is another chance, sir."

She hated bringing up Greg, his military service, and his death. Maybe this officer would have some sympathy for her. She seemed to recall that Greg had mocked the uniform the Air Force adopted because the pattern was ineffective. The pattern maker admitted they were forced to use it by the brass because it was basically a form of "branding" that set them apart from the Army and Marines.

Stockade Interview: Laney

The USAF Officer listens to what Laney has to say, letting everything be recorded on a small handheld digital recording device. Once she stops speaking he produces some pictures and places them in front of Laney. They are pictures of Laney as she was before going through decontamination. Her clothing is covered in blood, pink/grey brain tissue and specks of white (probably skull fragments).  Her face is sporting two black eyes, a nose that was at one time bleeding and dried blood is caked on her upper lip, somewhat resembling a poorly grown mustache.

“Ma’am this is what you looked like when you showed up. It’s pretty clear that you went through a lot before getting here. You willingly gave up your weapons, but refused to hand over a bag even after you had stated it had sharp instruments inside of it. Not only was the base commander adamant about not allowing weapons into the civilian refugee area he also passed down order to have all medical supplies collected.”

“You see, unlike most military bases in the country, Nellis wasn’t designated as a treatment center for those with the flu, or a collection center for the dead. We didn’t get anything that was in FEMA warehouses. All of that stuff went to the various sporting arenas here in Vegas where people were being treated for the flu.”

“We still have a lot of people sick with the flu here, and after becoming a refugee we camp we’re going to need everything we can get our hands on. Before you argue about legalities, items that are deemed necessary to the situation can be confiscated during a state of martial law.”

“Furthermore arguing about the legalities of martial law isn’t going to help, as you will simply be looked at as a dissenter and attempting to undermine our efforts to keep everybody on the base alive until we can evacuate.”

“So it’s really up to you if you want to be of some use, or remain locked up.”

Stockade Interview: Laney

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 5):

Unfazed, Laney smiled ernestly.

"Of course, it's not just the taking of supplies I objected to. But if you value that more than the services of experienced medical personnel like myself, I won't argue. As for legalities, I think in the end those might not be as... academic as you suppose. But again, I've said my piece, and here we are.

"I've offered my services. I've been through something like this before and I didn't want to be a refugee then, I don't want to be one now. If you're offering me a chance to help, then I accept. Am I correct in that?"

"Correct, we have been asking the civilians to help with whatever skills they have."

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 7):

"That sounds like a good plan. All I want to do is help, not be a burden."

She'd already said she was interested in helping, so now she waited for the officer to take her up on her offer.

In reply to Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael (msg # 8):

"Ok so we'll get you out processed and to one of the hangers where people are being housed. Basically your going to have a day or shift job, but eat and sleep with the rest of the civilians".

"Once your clothing is decontaminated and cleaned well get it back to you. We actually have a large crew of civilians working on that."

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 9):

She nodded. "Having people help out gives them something to do. That makes sense. Ok. Whatever you want to have happen now, I'm all up for it."
