Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

Jonathan sees a few other people looking out to what is occurring down below. The screaming within the hallway has stopped, but the eerie moaning continues. Then a single scream is heard that is quickly cut off.

[Private to Jonathan Pembersley: Wait for Laney to post first before rushing out into the hallway. That is if you choose to rush out into said hallway.]

Laney and her EMS partner, Marie Schrack ride an elevator to the 5th floor of a hotel/casino. For the past two weeks they two have been working 16 hours straight (sometimes 18) picking up individuals to sick to make it to one of the sports arena being used as mass care facilities.

As the door to the elevator opens the two women are greeted by a stumbling woman dressed as a maid. Marie tries to help the woman and is immediately bitten on the side of her neck. As Marie screams the two collapse to the ground. Behind the maid is a naked man wearing only a pair of underwear. The man tries to push it's self past the maid and Marine, but is having difficulty doing so. Even then the man would have t get past the rolling gurney (with Laney's eMS bag restign on top of it)

[Private to Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael: It will take you two actions to get your gun (one to open the bag, two to grab the gun. You can shoot on action #3). I also need a horror factor roll (get a 13 or higher on a 1d20). Fail and you lose your 1st action. ]

OOC: Jonathan and Laney please make just one post.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 11):

Driving up to Caesar's Palace via Flamingo, Laney and Marie parked the "rig" at the VIP entrance to Augustus Tower. They packed their bags, then placed them on the powered folding stretcher as they wheeled it to the VIP entrance. There was no one present at the VIP entrance but someone must have been watching the security camera because the doors slid open as they approached.

They wheeled the folding stretcher into the deserted lobby and the VIP elevator, continuing their present discussion. Marie had not been in favour of Laney packing her sidearm, and pointed out this was in fact against regulations. As they waited, Laney tried to justify her decision on the short ride up to the 5th floor.

"...and people gettin' real crazy now. I mean, any moron can see we got an honest-to-God life-threatening pandemic affecting the whole country and people are screaming their damn heads off about complete bullshit. Like, a virus knows and is going to respect folks' Constitutional rights or some stupid-ass shit like that..."

Just then, their radios started squawking. Only a partial signal was getting through due to the dead zone of the elevator shaft so they only heard short (and disturbing) snippets of the transmission from dispatch.

"...cease ongiong treatment and patient trans... ...luding quarantine areas such as Cox Pavillion, Mandalay Bay Event Center, the MGM Grand Garden, Orleans Arena, Thomas and Mack... ...vacuate the... immediately as.... ...again, patients who seem to have succum... ...are presenting symptoms of a mental state... and extreme hostility..."

"What the fuck? Did you catch that? We need to get to a land line, or at least where we can get some cell or radio reception. Wait, was that a gunshot?"

The elevator door opened and Marie immediately pushed past the stretcher to help the maid in the bloodstained uniform with a dazed expression. Behind her was a man, pallid white flesh showing his own wounds. "Marie, wait!" It was too late.

All Laney could do was look on in shock as the maid bore her partner down to the luxurious hallways carpeting, then attack her relentlessly and without provocation. She needed to react quickly to help her partner, but instead she found herself rooted to the spot. Who were these people? Why were they attacking them? Maybe they were sick, delusional, thought that the paramedics had antibiotics or antivirals that could help them. Or maybe the radio message and now the crescendo of gunfire from the street were harbingers of something much, much worse.

She reached into the paramedic bag side pocket and pulled the Glock free from its holster. Pulling back the slide to charge it she aimed it at the half-naked man stumbling over Marie and the maid. "Back! Get back!" The man ignored her and continued to stumble over the people at his feet, reaching out to push away the gurney.

Realising that she'd almost run out of time, and perhaps Marie had gone past that point, Laney aimed at the man's hairy chest and fired twice.

[Private to GM: My understanding is she gets 5 attacks/round. Failed her Horror check, needs 2 actions to ready her weapon, then 2 shots. Like her daddy taught her, centre-of-mass. You can edit out the radio traffic but I think at this point EMS is pulling out their crews if they can.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

Jonathan had just finished putting the last of his and some of Ralphs possessions into his bag when he heard the scream from the hallway. He moved towards the door before turning back to grab the steak knife he had left on the bed.

The table fitted perfectly in the alcove so it took him a couple of seconds to get a grip and turn it on its side. As he moved pass it he gave it a further shove to give him some more room. J.P stopped and took a look through the peep hole.

What he saw was a confused blur of movement and sound. The undead things seemed to still be there as well as someone else. He cracked open the door to try and gain the other persons attention just as the gun shots rang out. J.P visibly shuddered as the shots echoed along the hall, but due to reflex or a fear reaction he pulls the door wide open.

The scene that greets him is one of sheer terror and madness. He gestures to the woman shooting who must be from army come to save him;

"This way ....quick....quick..."

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

The half naked man's approach into the elevator is only slowed down by the impact of a pair of .40 caliber bullets fired from Lany's pistol. They SHOULD have dropped the man. It's at this point Lany realizes that the naked guy look like he's been dead for a few hours.

The man's hands reach out and try to grab her with both hands out stretched. One had grabs nothing, the other gets a hold of Lany's clothing just above the left shoulder. Luckily the gurney is between Lany and her assailant, whose jaws are chomping as if wanting to bite her as he tries to pull her over the gurney.

Jonathan, I need to you make a roll vs Horror factor  (get a 13 or higher and you pass, Fail and you lose your first action). After that make a full melee's worth of actions. The door to your room opens into the room.

Please make parry rolls for each of your actions. I would prefer not to make rolls for player characters.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

Although she wasn't thinking about it at the time, it was reasonable for a foreigner to mistake her as police because of Laney's khaki uniform shirt (like the NV Metro PD uniform), black cargo pants with bulging bellows pockets and black boots. And her gun, which, unlike her red reflective vest, was not standard paramedic issue anywhere in the world!

Sweet Jesus I put two in that ol' "ten-ring", like daddy called it, and that man didn't go down! she thought. Now he grabbed at her over the powered folding stretcher, twin dark holes in his chest missing the blood that should be pumping out of them. Shoving her gun in his mouth she pulled the trigger, sending a bullet through the back of his throat, medulla oblongata and spine before exiting in a spray of gore. If this were the movies he'd be launched to do a backwards somersault on the plush carpeting but this being reality, he just flopped straight down, over the Stryker hydraulic gurney.

The stories of drugs like PCP or crack cocaine making users so high they didn't feel any pain and could function was largely a myth of the drug war. Some adrenal or pituitary disorders will interfere with pain response, but no drug or disease will interfere with 1 or 2 rounds through the heart and lungs! If this was the flu somehow doing this, it was clear that she'd have to aim for the head to do any real damage.

Laney vaguely recalled a man calling something out to her in a British accent, although she probably couldn't hear much now due to the ringing in her ears. Maybe the man also needed help, but her first priority was to see her own safety and that of her partner, Marie. That required doing something about the insanely homicidal maid. It was clear that, due to the amount of blood coating Marie, her attacker and the deep-pile carpeting, she was in grave trouble and Laney needed to put down her attacker ASAP. Laney worried for a second about a spray of infected blood getting in Marie's wounds but as her attacker was actually biting her any infection had clearly already happened. She aimed at the maid's head and fired.

The bullet struck the skull at an angle, ripping out a patch of scalp and piercing the bone but only doing damage to the cerebral cortex, which the maid clearly wasn't using anyways. Laney switched her aim to a little lower, and this time the bullet blew out the back of the maid's head.

[Private to GM: Action #1: Called shot to head of naked man. Hit (Natural 20)
Action #2-3: Aimed called shot to head of Maid. Miss
Action #4-5: Aimed called shot to head of Maid. Hit, Damage 20 x3 (Head) = 60

20:28, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 20 using 4d6+8 with rolls of 1,2,4,5. Damage, x3.

I don't believe I actually need to make parry rolls as the geek attacking her was just force-fed a .40 S&W milkshake for her first attack, but I'll post my dodges just to be on the safe side and also to get into the habit:

20:34, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 18 using 1d20 with rolls of 18. Parry Attack #5 (+1).
20:34, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 6 using 1d20 with rolls of 6. Parry Attack #4 (+1).
20:33, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 3 using 1d20 with rolls of 3. Parry Attack #3 (+1).

20:01, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 3 using 1d20 with rolls of 3. Parry Attack #2.

Laney blows off the head of the naked man attacking her and is covered in blood, and brains. Shooting the maid in the head once is apparently not enough as she is still moving. A second shot  to head causes the maid to stop biting into Marie. But Marie isn't moving as the elevator doors attempt to close and are stopped by the two pairs of legs in the way.

Looking down the hallway Laney sees five people lying on the floor of the hallway. A single woman comes stumbling out of one of the open hotel room about 30 feet away. From the closest open hotel room (about 10 feet from the elevator) is where the sounds of the screaming British man are coming from.

[Private to Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael: I figure it'll take you an action to get into the room Jonathan is in. ]

OOC: I tried to find some sort of floor plan for the hotel floor, but couldn't find anything. Once I have a floor plan (or I make one). I'll have Jacob show up.

J.P stumbled at the ferocity of the undead things attacks. He is able to stay standing by grabbing the table, but the momentum sends him further into the suite. He grabs one of the chairs from the dining area as the zombie rises and continues after him.

Johnathan's fear is rising and he is desperately clutching at straws in his mind as he looks left and right. He continues to move through the suite with no other means to defend himself he keeps the chair raised hoping to keep the zombie at arms length. His foot hits the edge of the french doors he left open after watching the soldiers.

An idea jumps into his head as he steps out onto the terrace. He makes a couple of thrusts at the zombie hoping to entangle its arms in the chair legs as he maneuvers the undead thing to the edge of the terrace. Once in position he gives the chair and the zombie an all mighty push hoping to send them both over the edge.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

Hyperventilating, Laney reached into the elevator and made sure it was locked off. As a rule, EMTs and fire crews had keys that allowed them to lock off elevators, so they wouldn't have to wait for one in an emergency. The doors would not close automatically now, unless someone held down the "Door Close" button.

When the naked man had died, he's flopped forward, splattering her and the stretcher with blood and brains. Although she'd seen much worse in her years working as an EMT on different calls from homicides to industrial accidents and vehicular trauma, this was the first time she'd caused a death and it rocked her back, a little.

Then the cool analytic part of her mind took over and she observed the situation.

Marie would bleed out in three and a half minutes if the carotid artery in her neck was severed. This is probably what happened, as a loss of consciousness would indicate a rapid drop in blood pressure. And/or she could have arrested and/or suffered massive trauma in the attack. There were bodies all around and a woman was staggering down the hall, British tourist was gone, ducked back into his room, followed by the man attacking him.

"SIR! In the room! I can't come to you, you need to come out here NOW!

She pushed the asshole off the Stryker bed and he slumped backwards. Collapsing the bed, she took her bag off it and rolled Marie onto it and secured her for transport. She looked bad, but if she could get the oxygen on her and rig an IV drip, she might live long enough to get to the ambulance. She slapped a pressure bandage on her throat and oxygen mask over her nose and mouth, pulled the bed and her bag back into the elevator. Raising the hydraulic bed she shoved the maid out of the way to clear the door. Then she drew her pistol and pointed it at the approaching woman.

"Ma'am! I need you to stop where you are, do you understand me? Stop now!"

If the woman doesn't stop advancing or acknowledge her, she aims her pistol at her head and fires. (She holds her fire if the woman doesn't look a little dead, stops or acknowledges her.)

Actions:

1-3: Stabilise Marie for transport.
4: Ready weapon and aim.
5: Fire, aimed called shot at head.

14:03, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 15 using 1d20 with rolls of 15. Aimed Called Shot +1. A result of 16 is above a zombie's AR, so full damage.
14:06, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 24 using 4d6+8 with rolls of 4,5,4,3. Damage head shot. x3, so 72 damage total.

13:07, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 8 using 1d20 with rolls of 8. Parry Attack 4.
13:06, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 2 using 1d20 with rolls of 2. Parry Attack 3.
13:06, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 94 using 1d100 with rolls of 94. Parry Attack 2. (18)
13:06, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 10 using 1d100 with rolls of 10. Parry Attack 1. (2)

13:24, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 85 using 1d100 with rolls of 85. Medicine Roll 3.
13:24, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 24 using 1d100 with rolls of 24. Paramedic Medicine Roll 2.
13:05, Today: Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael rolled 4 using 1d20 with rolls of 4. Paramedic Medicine. (20%)

Ha ha, I suck! Her paramedic roll should have been d100 but I left the die roller set for d20. Converting a 4 on a d20 to percentile equals 20%. For serious or critical patients (and I would guess this really, really counts!) 3 rolls are required to "stabilise" the patient. You need to make at least 2 of these rolls, Laney made all 3 (Paramedic Medicine 85%.

Then I forgot to switch back, so the first 2 parries were rolled with percentile and so should actually be 2 and 18. All parries are +1.

[Private to GM: I sure hope Jonathan makes it out of the room. Laney's not going to leave her partner behind, dead or alive. But Maria's probably still alive, barely. Even a severed carotid artery, the one that carries 20% of the body's blood to the brain, will take 3-5 minutes to bleed out. A severed windpipe will also cause suffocation, but again, takes minutes. Either way, she's not going to get trapped in a hotel room with no escape.]

Laney manages to stabilize Marie, but she's in bad shape with a large bite on the left side if her neck. The odd woman continues to approach and Laney subsequently blows her head off just as she gets to the door of the adjacent elevator. As the body falls to the ground the elevator opens up.

[Private to Jacob Anderson: Your in the elevator that just opened up, responding to what the operator called a fight. You see the headless body fall tot he ground.]

[Private to Lakeisha 'Laney' Carmichael: The aimed called shot actually adds +2 to the strike roll because you spent an action aiming. Also you don't have your WP bonuses listed in your character sheet.]

Jonathan manages to use the chair to prevent the crazed hotel guest from attacking him, and further manages to guide the thing out onto the terrace and push it up against

OOC: Jonathan, I made a roll for you to entangle the Zombie with the chair. But with only one attack/action you were unable to push it off the side. You can make that action to push the Zombie off now.

Today felt a little more strange than others , almost like that full moon feeling you get when shit seems to always happen that night. Jacob did not usually take these calls as he was more accustomed to watching the Casino floor but it had been a dead night with little action.

Once in a while he thought it was good to take these calls so he did not forget some of the basics of the job. Grabbing his gear as he headed to the elevator he pushed the buttons to the floor to the reported disturbance and headed up. Humming along to the catchy song on the elevator he was almost zoned out when he heard the distinct sound of a gun shot right when the doors were opening. The loud thud and the scene of a headless body falling to the ground has Jacob wondering for a moment what the hell is happening.

Reaching for his weapon he pulls it out and his stop of the elevator doors before depressing a small button and speaking into his head piece"Code 246 -- I repeat Code 246-- Send backup and call this one in."

Jacob leans against the wall for a moment before speaking "Security ! -- Put your weapon down and get on the ground .. I have a gun and I have backup coming."

In reply to Jacob Anderson (msg # 25):

Killing the woman left her in a surreal state of mind for an instant, but she had a job to do and snapped out of it. Clipping the holster to the front of her equipment belt, she holstered her weapon. she then strapped an oxygen mask on Marie's face and prepped an IV drip.

The sound of gunfire outside was starting to penetrate her consciousness. Not just the cracks of pistols but popping automatic weapons fire and explosions rattling the windows. Good, it sounded like the cavalry had arrived. He could deal with whoever was attacking the British tourist.

"Las Vegas City Paramedic! You accessed us a few minutes ago through the VIP entrance, that's our rig parked downstairs off Flamingo. Remember?

"We just got attacked and my partner is critically injured. I think she's stabilised but yeah, I'm gonna bounce ASAP or I'm gonna lose her. So thanks for the offer to help, but there's someone in real trouble in room, ah, 514 and they could really use your assistance right now. Thanks again."

As a civil servant with proper ID and a CCW permit (not that she needed one, Nevada being an "open carry" state) Laney wasn't too worried about the hotel bull. The crew had obviously just been attacked, and she had been defending her life and that of her partner/patient in a legally justified manner. Hotel security had no more legal enforcement powers to arrest and detain than any other private citizen. If the bull thought a crime had been committed he could call the police on her (good luck!) at the certain peril of his job and own arrest for assault and interfering with emergency services (if not murder were the patient to die).

But hotel security was always helpful and cooperative with ambulance and fire crews to a fault and she trusted he'd be cool.

Jacob had no real proof what the lady was saying was true at this moment. He had seen a few bad drug deals go wrong before and other shootings had happened at the Casino. Jacob had to hope she was who she was claiming to be at this moment , as he edges to the door and takes a look into the hallway before quickly heading towards room 514.

Getting to the door he can hear what sounds like a struggle as he grabs his access card and flicks it along the door and opens the door with gun held out.

The hallway of the hotel floor was on the other hand something out of a movie. In addition the the lady without a head several other bodies lie in the hallway apparently the victims of being bitten in the neck. About half the doors to guest room were open. From behind the closed doors there was some moaning. Accessing room 514 (the door was ajar and no key card was needed) he watches as a man pushes a crazed man off the balcony with a chair. Both chair and crazed man plument to the ground below. Gunshots and sirens can be heard as well.

J.P slumped to the floor having watched his attacker fall and hit the hotel forecourt. He glanced at the soldiers firing on the road to see if they were in control of the situation below before dropping into a sitting position with his back against the wall.

He looked at his trembling hands vaguely award of movement further back in the suite.

In reply to Darkside Trooper (msg # 28):

As the hotel bull went to check the hotel room, Laney gathered her breath and her wits. Shooting the woman stumbling towards her was different than defending herself or helping Marie. Something about that jogged her memory.

She called out to Jacob, who she vaguely remembered as being a supervisor or manager for hotel security

"Sir, something important I should mention... aim for the head. I'm not sure why, or what's wrong with these people. Something about the flu is causing this.

"This is also important: We are going to need a safety escort out to the ambulance. This is happening all over the place now and we're under instructions to evacuate the downtown area and I need to get Marie to hospital. You're welcome to come along. OK?"

She checked her radio and cell for further communication from dispatch.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

Opening the door and watching the man toss a lady and chair over the side Jacob could only watch on as the shit was hitting the fan in full force. Whatever was happening was not good and it seemed the Casino and other areas were getting hard by whatever it was.

Turning his head back towards the paramedic Jacob yells back " We need to get out of here , how are these people changing like this ? All the blood on the ground cant be good . This looks like a back horror flick right now."

In reply to Jacob Anderson (msg # 31):

Laney finished checking Marie's pulse with the stethoscope, then and looked at the pressure bandage on Marie's wound to see how bad the blood loss was.

"Good, let's get this done, then. Grab that guy, and I'll hold the elevator for you. It's not safe here."

Laney changed her gloves and mask, then got the ambulance keys from Marie's pocket. She also found the spare Glock magazine. Lastly, her ears were still ringing from the gunshots in the confined space, so she grabbed a few packets of ear plugs.

OOC: You guys are no longer in combat so your free to run around and do what you want on the hotel floor. Once you get int he elevator or go down the stairs and leave (I suppose you could also just off a balcony to leave the hotel floor, but you'd need to make another character....) I'll have something up for you.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

J.P got up off the terrace and moved back into his suite following the voices he could hear. It was more of an emotional effort than a physical one, but it still took all his strength to do it. Standing breathing deeply several scenarios ran through his head, he decided he need to leave and join the army guys out the front. As he had no significant weapon of his own he decided to find the lady with the pistol.

He spotted what he thought was a staff member next to the door and he also had a gun. He raised his arms;

"Hello security was it ? Are we evacuating to the army guys out front ?"

Before he can answer J.P remembers his bag.

"Just a minute my good man."

He collects it putting it on and returns to the security man.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

Marie seemed stable for the moment. Laney stepped out into the hall where she could get a view in both directions. She tried her radio.

"Dispatch, this us 58-12. Does anyone copy?"

MedicWest had 2 voice channels and 2 data channels assigned. Most of their communications with dispatch were via the MDT system in the ambulance, either by a docked laptop or the dashboard terminal. When they needed to reach dispatch when they were away from the rig they used a cel phone or, as a last resort, the personal handset radio.

Re: Las Vegas, Nevada

Getting nothing on her radio or cell phone [Private to GM: ?] she walked over to the room where the security officer and the tourist were located. Checking both ways, then back at the elevator, she knocked on the door.

"Gentlemen, ya'all gotta be showin' a bit more hustle here, 'cause this train's gonna be leavin' the station Ay-SAP." Her Louisiana drawl did tend to come out a bit when she was under stress, and the apparent lack of movement from either man was driving her crazy.
