DM & PLAYER -  AFK or Vacation Requests

Fast approaching is summer vacation time. My family has decided to go on an epic road trip of the USA. My wife and I haven't many years left before our daughter will be wanting to do her own things, and we won't spend the quality time we can share together now, then. So, I'm giving early warning that from May 28th till the end of June, my posts will be limited as driving across, up and down the USA will be hard on this old man. We will be driving over 8,000 miles with 30 stops at most of the major landmarks and cities along the way. This trip will take just over a month. So, I will try to update, but cannot guarantee that will happen daily. I will try not to go over 3 days but if it happens, please be understanding. Thanks!

Dang.  30 stops?

I probably couldn't do it in less than 100, due to back pain and having to use restroom facilities.

You, sir, are a hero!

Sweet. I remember when my father had a similar idea, but we had limited it to about 20 states. Of course, with 4 kids my mom couldn't take that much more of our shenanigans through many more states

Have a great trip! And you are right, time with the kids is fleeting, use it before you loose it. We'll be fine.

Speaking of which, we're considering of doing something similar, though being from Europe we practically never take such long road trips. Which of the 30 points are those worth visiting the most? :)

Hard to say... My wife is looking forward to Victoria, BC, my daughter is looking forward to there and the Grand Canyon, and myself is looking forward to Dodge City, San Fransisco, Monterey, LA and Las Vegas strip. Of course, the scenery in the desert, especially the rock outcroppings (buttes), the petrified forest, chimney rock, the painted desert, Montezuma Castle and etc. are all something everyone is wanting to see. The rest of the itinerary is Seattle Needle, Mt. Rushmore, Napa Valley, maybe Disneyland if there's time, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, the Great Sand Dunes, the four corners, Oklahoma City, and the Fantastic Caverns.

Wow, that's really quite the list on your itinerary. Wish you lots of fun and that you can take the time to really appreciate the landscape :)

Man, you're going to be hours away, but if you could get out west of Seattle, on the Olympic Peninsula, the old-growth temperate rainforest there is an awe-inspiring sight.  Walking under the branches of trees that have trunks that can be 20+ feet in diameter, in the gloom of a canopy so dense that very little light gets through at noon on a clear day, and feeling the hush of the world around you is quite the thing.

There are some neat hotsprings and waterfalls there, too.

I was in Victoria, BC in the 90s for a long weekend, and absolutely loved it.  The ferry from Port Angeles, Washington to Victoria BC (or the other way around) is a short trip from several entrances to the Olympic National Forest.

In reply to Artifex (msg # 10):

I'll look into the Olympic Peninsula. It sounds like something we shouldn't miss. I know from what they saw, the gals are really excited about Victoria, BC. My daughter wants to try all the food at the Dutch Bakery & Diner & Block Kitchen and Bar. I know we are stopping at Redwood Natl Park as well as some other stops I didn't list above. Time isn't an issue as we can use the entire time my daughter is out on summer break to do this trip. Thanks for the tip, and if anyone has any other place that might be special to not miss seeing, let me know.

While it is not as exciting as Chronicler's trip, I am away from 26 May - for about two weeks.  After a couple of days re-enacting, I am off to the island of Rhodes - We are going to be up to our eyeballs in classical and crusader history :)

I'll have some internet, but posts are liable to be short and conversational, rather than driving my games forwards.
