And re-reading my previous post, I realize the "wanting your spells to work" sounds sort of condescending, and that wasn't my intention.  It's more I've seen people try to cover every single possible weakness in their spellcasting, trying to cover multiple energies and scenarios to affect every possible foe, but then none of the spells are particularly powerful or especially effective, leaving the spellcaster feeling a bit second-rate.

I've often found that being truly excellent in a few areas, and then have a few back-up generalist spells for things that fall outside your area, can be more effective than trying to be all things to all monsters.

I had a wizard once who had absolute crap for hit points (I nick-named her "The Frail"), but she was focused on Abjuration and Conjuration (not a specialist wizard, but just had a lot of spells from those schools).  She wasn't much for blasting, but she was a genius at battlefield control, putting up shields around her party members, then separating enemies with walls of fire (at lower levels) and prismatic wall (at higher levels).  The enemies were then channeled to our fighters and couldn't swarm them, which made things far more even in large-scale battles.

A good blaster can do much the same, except for incinerating the low-level enemies before they can get to the fighters, and then pre-toasting the bigger bad guys for skewering by the fighter-types.  ;)

In reply to Dungeon Master (msg # 9):

Haha, no worries. I usually play conjuration/transmutation wizards, letting others fight for me or creating Golems is fun.
But Dellas is more a little ball of fire blasting and destroying stuff right and left. So he needs more power than support.

I'll have Dellas mostly deal with destroying, a bit summoning and a bit utility

For those in the US Happy Thanksgiving.  For the rest if you have a reason to be with family, over eat, consume alcohol and watch sports...I say go for it.  :)

Spending the day with friends -- several adults with no local and/or living relatives, so it's has become our annual tradition. We all contribute and cook it together. There will be internet, movies, and hopefully a few rounds of Pirateer, just to be different.

Dinner's in about half an hour. It's smelling really good in here right now. :)

If y'all are celebrating today -- have a good time!

You should introduce D&D to the group.

Sounds great, wish you lots of fun and a safe celebration.

Kinda been done. Back before I'd found any groups, or thought to look on line, we'd met a guy new to the area (hotel manager), and he was a gamer. So, knowing how much I wanted to play, my friend helped set up a game. He was GM, running Palladium Fantasy 2nd edition (new to me), my friend was one player, and got another casual friend who was bored enough to try, too. The casual friend couldn't keep track of anything at all even during the game, never mind one game to the next. Main friend tried, but wasn't really into it. Then things imploded with the GM(long story), and that was that.

My friend's brother isn't into much beyond watching TV, and our other friend here today has no interest.

OTOH, Pirateer turned out to be very popular today. Brother's attached to the TV, as normal, but the rest of us just finished 3+ hours of pirate warfare -- the last half with them ganging up on me. I won the first 5 games outright and narrowly won the next couple. The next several games, they either sacrificed a ship to block my harbor so I couldn't get in to win, or killed off all my ships before going after each other, whichever they could manage first. LOL It was fun. :D

Re: Experience

I ended up working on Thanksgiving proper, so we had our dinner on Saturday at my new house.  It was the first time Mom hasn't had to cook Thanksgiving dinner in several decades.  Though I did have to stay awake the whole day (usually I'm a day sleeper due to a nighttime work schedule) it was totally worth it.  We made an embarrassing amount of food, but everyone had plenty of leftovers to take home.  Herb-brined turkey cooked with herb-butter - yum!

Thanksgiving Day at the parents with all but 2 of my 5 siblings and their families, an old friend got married on Friday, Saturday was a recovery day, and yesterday I helped one of my sisters move. Busy but fun holiday weekend with much laughter and story telling.

Heh. It was the deviled eggs and ham that posed a threat today! Mmmm, yummy!

Although, I did get two boxes of dark chocolate covered cherries as prezzies today, so I guess you could say the chocolate's lying in wait.... :D

Does anyone have anymore questions before heading back to where we first encountered the crow?

I don't think we really need to go through another round of posting unless someone has a revelation of some kind.

Re: Experience

All right, does anyone want to collate the treasure from the Fen-on-the-Fen adventure?  I can get into the specifics of what you found out (as I assume that someone will bust out some identification magic either here or back at the Guildhall).  There will be a 50xp bonus to the person who gets the list up!

Everyone gets 1700xp for your fight against the alligators, kobolds, small god, giant beetles, and phantom fungus, as well as making sure the crow dispersed for good.

If no one has anything further to do in Fen-on-the-Fen, I'll move the action back towards Redhaven while we're sorting out treasure.

Re: Experience

This is a good way to see how much the players were paying attention when they were gathering loot.  I don't guarantee that I caught everything so if someone happens to see a +5 avenging holy vorpal two handed sword in one of the posts, chime in now.  Please include the msg# where you found it and if anyone was specifically carrying it.

* name in parenthesis is who specifically collected it in character that I happened to note.

Nest of the Crow god
Golden Feather (Dellas)
Puffball Mushrooms (Dellas)

Golden Godsblood? (technically, no one collected this at the time into a container)

Kobold caves
A dozen crystal vials, about half of them green, one gold, one red, one blue, and three teal.  (The six bottles that are not green are minorly magical)

A brass chest molded with scenes of battle between mermen and sailors.

Bottle of Phantom Fungus bits (Dellas)

Armor of the Phoenix Knight - a highly decorated suit of full plate armor, with gold-colored scrollwork and the swoop of red enamel scales highlighting the designs of a phoenix in the helm and across the breastplate.

A detailed silver dagger with a pommel shaped like a coiled dragon.  minor magical aura

Embroidered silver cloth

A carefully crafted and neatly folded cloth-of-gold crown

A crystal pendent of a sun on a golden chain

Brass Chest
The bulk of it is filled with silver coins of many eras, with a few of other colors (copper, gold, even the darker gleam of electrum) studded throughout.

There is an oak wand carved with a vine twining around itself, studded with mossy-green clear stones.

There is a bracelet made of molded leather and and crystal to look like a dragon coiled about one's wrist or upper arm, its toothy jaws open, a flame-red tongue within.  It always feels warm.

There are two identical bands of what looks like spider silk, woven in a pattern of geckos.

Finally there is a stone figurine of a cat, nearly life size, carved of lapis lazuli with exquisite detail.  "Prrrow" is engraved on the bottom.

Re: Experience

quote:
The majority of them seem to be items of beauty or shine, polished pebbles of lovely colors, bright flowers or bark or mosses, colorful beetle shells, strips of shiny dried fish skin, polished bits of bone or teeth.  You're reminded of the keepsakes of children, who might collect little tokens like this.  However, scattered amongst the innocuous things are at least five alligator skulls, elaborately decorated with carving, paint, and feathers.  There are also several faceted crystals, two pink, one purple, one yellow, and one deep red, each about the size of a human man's thumb.

I took the crystals and the colorful pebbles... there was sadly no time to take the skulls.
