I do, but have yet to do more than skim it.

I haven't read the background carefully yet (it's surprisingly extensive), but basically, every Godzilla-style monster (Kaiju) movie is "real" -- Earth has been under assault since like the 1950s, and a defense force has been implemented: giant mecha / robots. Think Pacific Rim. (In fact, if I end up not liking the background, I might roll with Pacific Rim as a setting instead. I love the international angle, if not needing two pilots for each machine.)

It's pretty anime-influenced, as well, in terms of the character archetypes presented (tough guy/gal, Hero, Cute Guy/Gal, Rebel, etc.), and there's a neat element where there's a group (the Ninja, I think) who worship the Kaiju -- and they actively work against the Mecha Assault Force.

I'll post more once I give it a good read.

Re: Mecha vs. Kaiju

Kaiju Patrol (by a different author and publisher) does the same for FATE Accelerated.

CAMELOT Trigger from Worlds in Shadow can also be adapted as well.

Pacific Rim FATE does sound some kind of amazing doesn't it?

Is it decent, Alyse? Don't have that one.

Re: Mecha vs. Kaiju

Nor do I. It seemed a bit lackluster, from the preview.

There's a mecha system included, natch. It starts out as a very simple one (aspects and consequences for the mecha, it's basically a character) if I skimmed it accurately. Then there's the ability to add a bunch of detail around armor-piercing, burnout weapons, etc. -- frankly a lot of stuff that I think is extraneous and better handled by consequences and situational aspects. I don't think I'd go full-on crunchy with it, and to be fair, the full-on doesn't look that crunchy.

Re: Mecha vs. Kaiju

That's what makes Camelot Trigger so excellent. The Mecha isn't a separate thing. It's just a collection of stunts you can shut down to absorb stress. Like ablative armor with perks. It works very well.

In reply to Cripple X (msg # 12):

I agree, that represents a lot of mecha anime quite faithfully.

Re: Mecha vs. Kaiju

Here's the rundown

Armor (mech) has total of 5 systems. Consider a system as a stunt that belongs to the armor. Each system buys you one of the following:

Total of 4 skill points
A stunt you can use while in armor.

Skill points can be distributed among skills however you like and you use better of your and armor rating. That is as long as the system is working. Under certain circumstances systems can shut down and powering them up requires serious repair (I think). So for instance you can have a system that gives whoever pilots the armor Fair (+2) Shoot and Fair (+2) Athletics, but if your Shoot is Good (+3) and Athletics Fair (+2), the system is useless.

Alternatively you can have a system which gives you +2 every time you charge an opponent.

Or you can have a teleportation which lets you spend a Fate point to switch a zone. Armor stunts are pretty much standard Fate Core stuff.

Armors don't have any rules for power supply, stress or consequences. (You use your own Fate points and stress tracks.) However, you can choose to shut down a system of your choice to get -2 stress, a system of opponent's choice for -4 stress or both for -6 stress.

You can have a system that enables you to link with another robot to create even more scary stuff, but that's going overboard if you ask me.

Pretty much this is it. IMO these rules are simple, elegant and make up for some interesting choices. For instance you can have Great Targeting Computer, which shoots at +4 regardless of your skill, but you can be damn sure that opponent will shut it down first chance he gets. Alternatively, if a veteran pilot ends up in teaching armor, he'll end up outranking armor in all skills.

I'm yet to try the system, but it looks interesting as heck.

Re: Mecha vs. Kaiju

Yep, familiar with Camelot Trigger -- currently running a game on another PBP site, actually. It's my pet game at the moment, I'm commissioning an artist I've worked with previously to draw up the NPCs and everything.

Good stuff. :)
