In reply to Kayla Wallin (msg # 27):
Team Kamikaze
The voyage is pleasant and uneventful, for a change. Bradford and even Whitney prove to be fair companions on the journey, although they mostly want to either work or play an ancient card game called Pazaak.
quote:
Pazaak Rules
The goal is to reach 20 without going over, or to get closer to it than your opponent. It involves 3 decks: a table deck with cards numbered 1-10, with 4 of each number present, and a side deck of exactly 10 cards (which might contain curated numbers, or special cards that add or subtract 1-6 from the shown total) assembled by each participating player.
Players begin by drawing 4 cards from their side deck at random, placing them in their hand. They then draw the top card of the table deck, reveal it, add it to the table, and then either place a card from their hand or end their turn. Only 1 card can be played from your hand per turn, and you never draw more cards from your side deck after the game begins.
When a player ends their turn, they either say End, which commits them to playing at least one more turn, or Stand, which commits them to playing no further cards. You Stand automatically if you hit 20 exactly.
Players win the set if 1) their opponent goes over 20; 2) they manage to play 9 cards without going over 20 themselves; 3) if they are closer to 20 after both players Stand than their opponent. It's possible to tie.
Generally you play 3 sets to determine a winner.
By the time the trip ends, anyone who bothered to play this with them has become quite good at it.
After about 2 weeks, Sophia directs Xander to reduce the transport's speed. When he does so, the view outside stabilizes enough that you can finally see more than just the glow of stars and the dominating view of Saturn and its majestic rings. Also worth noting, your Archive access at this distance from Earth is so weak here that it's practically non-existent.
A hazy orb known as Titan can be seen in the (relative) distance -- certainly, it's the closest celestial body to your present location. You could likely make landfall today if you pushed it. Nearby, a fleet of sturdy-looking ships is holding the line against a pair of massive, egg-shaped vessels that pulse periodically with blue energy that looks an awful lot like Roshak tomfoolery.
The Goethe is not present, so far as I can tell, Sophia supplies.
We have beaten them here! Although...that's strange...
A portion of the viewport zooms in, and a digital outline surrounds one vessel in particular. It doesn't take long to see why Sophia has brought this one to your attention, as it looks quite familiar by now.
The Factory! Viceroy beat US here, too, she observes.
Should we hail him?
