The Game: Chapter 15

In reply to Aviva (msg # 728):

Roger, half asleep, murmurs at the commotion. Hearing it intensify, he tips his pod forward, slides out, and rubs his eyes. They go from puffy to wide open in an instant, followed immediately by a tone of pure consternation.

"Oh come on dudes. We do not need a tentacle! Gestalt, we reached an agreement about the parasite. Wait, Aviva, what're you... no no, lower the weapon."

Roger waves the noise away as he walks over to Billy with due haste and has a word with him. He nods when he's done.

The Game: Chapter 15

Billy accepts Roger’s words as he drags him away from Rebecca’s crowd, but uncharacteristically has few in return until Roger’s finished his shpiel. “Busy day,” he comments, “We found a new mole faction.  Unless you’ve met them before, I’m up to four now.  These ones follow the voice of Ceto.  They’ve got a direct line,” he points to the collar at the end of the tentacle, “Have a look.  Do you have any better debrief on the voice?  You talked to it, right?  Apparently it was talking to the parasite when Ibis got shot so… I’m not a fan.” he says with a shrug.

The Game: Chapter 15

In reply to Billy Laser Fist (msg # 732):

***OFF AUTOFOLLOW!!!!!!***

Nightmare's eyes light up as the tentacle is dragged in and she gives Gestalt an absolutely infuriatingly smug grin.

WHAT IS THIS?!

She immediately gloves back up and begins checking it for any vital signs, looking at the gross morphology of the tentacle.  In response to Billy's question, she provides a full report of her doings and findings with the removed specimens; she looks exhausted but proud of herself.  Her hair stays static white as she doesn't have the energy to put into appearance.

As she drags it into her makeshift laboratory she matter-of-factly says

Glad we kept that material, now clear a surface so I can dissect this and cordon it off to keep everyone away from it. I will need to borrow a spacesuit that is more dextrous... mine is clunky and we are going to have to further dissect at least one of those specimens.

The Game: Chapter 15

In reply to Billy Laser Fist (msg # 735):

"Yeah, nearly drove Gustaf insane. Lemme pull up what I got. Adj, roll it."

Roger attends to his bracer and holds out his right palm. Teal mists emerge from the his hand and swirl into a 3D holographic image demonstrating the following scene with audio piping from his wristpiece:

quote:
The interior of the shack is nearly barren, aside from a circle of carved symbols etched into the shack's far wall, opposite of the door. This 'wall' isn't actually part of the shack, it turns out, but part of the "island" column of canyon wall it is built against.

The area inside the circle looks much less solid that the surrounding rock, almost like quicksand.

The interior circle begins to shift and swirl. The grating sound resolves into recognizable words, though they are as harsh and gritty as the medium through which they are being transmitted.

"Why...are...you...here?"

Roger turns to face the garbled voice but looks down at the sand swirling around his feet.

"Well, buddy, that depends on who I'm talking to. Are you Gustaf... or the Face in the Deepest Burrow?"

"Does it?"

The voice sounds almost amused. Almost.

"I am willing to believe the reason you'll admit to being here depends on who I am, but the reason itself is more rigid than that."

The grains of sand swirl to create 3D pictures akin to the dull pin toys from the late 20th century. It resembles a human face, but not Gustaf.

"You must be Roger. The women, Marcy and Wren. The others, I do not know."

The ground rumbles ever so slightly.

"You can call me Ceto. Now, with that out of the way...why are you here?"

Ceto!!" Roger gasps.

He quickly genuflects and motions others to do the same.

"Dude I am talking to a planet! I'm so sorry -- this is just what I wear like... I didn't expect to be seeing you."

"I guess I'm actually here for three reasons. First, I think you're awesome. You've got so many like, awesome features. Those little Dillon things, Waspers -- even though they kinda suck , great gravity and climate, the Joss, the Talpids, breatheable atmosphere. Water! Fucking water! You are such a great planet..."

Roger takes a pause.

"Which leads me to the second reason I'm here, which I didn't realize until now. There are beings like me who have been travelling through space and are super desperate to have a planet to stand and live on after so many years. But my people can be really, like, rough on the ecology. There's a strong chance they'll destroy you or parts of you just so they can live and enjoy their existence. They're also very curious about the universe, though. They want to learn. And the best of them want to preserve all the strange, beautiful things they find. Respect. I'm one of those people. There's one of us to every ten who aren't, though. So, here's my question: are you cool with people living on you and trying to bend you to their puny will? I've been telling them no, but I kinda need to hear it from you to speak with any kind of authority."

The grainy picture in the sand shifts into the shapes of various settlements. The Joss compound, an island, a camp, a large domed structure sitting atop a mountain range.

"There are many settlers here already. There have been more, and less, in the past. There may be more, or less, in the future. Such is the way of sentients. They come and go, ebbing and flowing like the tides themselves. It is an honor and privilege to nourish any who come looking for shelter."

"I appreciate your concern for my possible exploitation. I have been exploited before. The perpetrating species never persist for long. They reap what they sew."

The pictures fade back into the not-human face.

"Are there other questions you would ask of me?"

Roger pauses to think.

"And so you're cool with humans coming down. OK, just double checking. I'll pass the word along. Is there any part of you that's like, out of balance? Do you need help with anything? Which sentients came here? And which ones were made here?"

"I do not often learn the...names..." the voice says. The sand swirls to create the image of an alien that appears to have a snake-like lower body and a humanoid torso. "These were the ones who built many of the structures that remain on the surface, but they are not native to here. No native race has reached the stars. And few of them remain at all."

"Right on, OK. So what other cool shit do you have planned for the next several thousand years? New subspecies of bwan? Like, what's in the works?"

"I do not plan. I simply am, and I allow others to be, or not be, as their actions dictate."

"Yeah but you gotta have like a will or a... uh, a preference, right?" Roger asks as he stands up. "Can you show me all the races? What were the others? When did they come here? That domed place -- what about the other structures? Can you show me everything?"

"When you measure time the way I do, you look at things like preferences a bit differently."

The sand swirls into a myriad of unrecognizable faces.

"I could show you more, but not if you want to speak with your friend. This is not easy for him, and we have already spoken for longer than usual."

The projection concludes.

"After that, Gustaf goes berserk, the ground quakes, and I lose my fortress and bots. But that's the encounter," Roger says matter-of-factly. "Hey, you need a hand with that, Becks? Gear, lab equipment?" he calls out as he watches the young scientist haul the sluggy biomass off on her own.

The Game: Chapter 15

Billy watches Roger’s presentation attentively but at its conclusion just gives a thoughtful “Huh” before joining him as he converges on the tentacle with Rebecca, but Billy emerges from the group after prying the collar off the tentacle’s rough end.  “Roger can you get me a screwdriver?” he asks conversationally as he takes a seat, turning the collar over in his hands.

Percy's got it!

She calls out as a wet plop is heard on the makeshift lab bench.  She places a hand on the collar preparing to remove it.

We definitely need a tentacle... clearly we did not kill the thing as good as we think we did... and its still causing problems.  Looks like this is a primary body.  I have a theory that we are looking at something akin to a slime mold or fungus where you have a basalt body and fruiting reproductive body.

Roger, have you seen anything like this?  Do you think removing it will cause a problem?  What did you all say it does?

She bends herself to her grizzly work with rapt fascination and calls out to the party that went down to the depth.

OK!  I need a full report from each of you.  What was it doing?  Where did you find it?  What was the behavior of the creatures around it?  Did it react when you cut it off.  Spare no details, Percy will take notes.

The doll that is teetering around next to her actually walks up to the group holding a datapad and pen.

The Game: Chapter 15

Rebecca dives into the tendril with gusto, and soon notes that it is structured less like typical plant or animal membranes and more like the pliant stroma associated with the fruiting bodies of spore-bearing fungi.

While the chief science office is wrist-deep in alien tissue, Billy and Roger consider the problem of the collar. It appears to be one solid piece of machined metal aside from the attachment point, which resembles a bracket through which a long, serrated spike protrudes. The tip of the spike is discolored from the time it spent embedded in its host, and its base disappears rather seamlessly into the rest of the collar on the other side of the brackets.

The Game: Chapter 15

In reply to The Watcher (msg # 739):

A footstool materializes beneath Roger as he likewise sits to inspect the tentacle. After a few affirmatory "mmhms" and "huhs," he turns to Billy.

"Alright, Bill, here’s what I think. We check the spike for rust. Then, get some lubricant. I'll conjure some pliers and we'll see if we can ease it out. If not, you can heat it with your laser to expand the collar... but we don't want to cook it. If it’s still stuck after that, we can heat then cool the spike in quick success... might just shrink enough to pop out."

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, B, A, start?

She says with a smile looking at Billy.

The various tinkerers are able to remove the collar from the tentacle without much trouble. Removing the spike from the housing proves more difficult, however.

OOC: Reason check for anybody trying to remove the spike without damaging anything.

In reply to The Watcher (msg # 742):

Aviva lifts slowly from her crouch.  She does, however, keep her hand by her hip with her pistol trained on Briggs.

The tentacle was probably bigger before, she muses.

Right, we'll cut it out and bring it back?

Yep

And we didn't get to see what the rest of it looked like.

Maybe a really big snake?

Probably not, snakes don't stick their butts up into wasper hives

Aviva peers over Roger and Nightmare's shoulders.

In reply to Aviva (msg # 746):

Nightmare's ears prick up

Why can't you tell us about it until we see it too Aviva?  Does something stop you?

Noticing Frank's discomfort Nightmare pauses and lowers her glasses.

Please accept my apologies, Frank.  She says with sincerity.  I am a product of my environment, my entire upbringing has been geared for this exact moment.

She cuts her eyes over to the tableau of Billy and Aviva and her cold scientific veneer cracks.  She smiles with genuine warmth and her eyes get a bit dewy as she blinks back tears.

I am still working on forging appropriate interactions with people and sometimes I slip... If you think I'm scary now... you should have seen what I was before.  All that being said, that...thing is an existential threat that seems to act similar to the cordyceps fungus did on earth.  Only that fungus could only infect ants.  This has shown tropism for both humans and waspers... likely Joss if I had to guess.  Oh and if that wasn't bad enough somebody has been fucking with it.

The curse word seems unfamiliar in her mouth, but she gestures to the collar that Roger is tinkering with.

So I need to be laser focused on the task at hand.  So, please, tell Percy what happened down there, he is an extension of me.  When I get to break for the day lets talk over dinner?

That last sentence seemed like it was VERY difficult for her to say and required significant force of will.  He hair which had remained white through this entire time has a quiet pink flush to it as she awaits an answer to her question.

In reply to Gestalt (msg # 750):

Nightmare makes an exaggerated wind up and aims a playful punch at Gestalt.  Just before contact her fist phases out and she wiffs through him letting the momentum carry her back around to the bench.

Joking aside... this thing is terrifying.  We need to find out what it is immediately.

When Percy has a moment he grabs her EVA suit helmet and she uses the Eye of Baxter to magnify and zoom in on the plant looking for the fruiting bodies searching to see if the spores are on the tentacle or if they are located elsewhere.  If on the tentacle she pushes everyone away places the entire reproductive organ in the jar.

She will work on it with an eye towards how to kill it, testing flammability, conductivity, freezing (thanks Wren), and Roger's mist to see what would be most effective in killing the main body.

/ooc Is our biologist still with us?  He should be assisting as well.

She pokes at the collar when she has a moment.
