Re: Æthercoil: Togetherness

Angel gives Meiou a concerned look. She gets up out of her chair and goes to put a hand on his shoulder. "I can't imagine how frustrating this is for you. But even though you don't remember me, I hope I will earn your trust again."

May says, "Well whenever you all are ready for the lessons, I'll show you in whatever room you guys are staying the night in."

Angel says, "That brings up an important point... where are you guys sleeping?"

"Sure thing, Meiou," Johnny adds as he leans over Angel's shoulder. "After all, she gained my trust pretty easily."

He waited for Angel to say something about him literally falling before her feet at first sight while pushing him away, for the third time so far, but instead, she talked about where everyone's sleeping tonight.

He looked around wondering if there'll be a spare room for Angel...and himself if he can manage.  Granted, he'll sleep anywhere, but he's with traveling companions that aren't as prone to crash at the back of a jester's colorful wagon like he is.

Re: Æthercoil: Togetherness

He liked Angel she was real nice and Johnny seemed nice if not one
to pick a fight with Jamie based on her rep. One of the few
positive things Pip had taught him was don't pick a fight unless
you know you can win. Though that never stopped his stealing from
causing a fight. As for sleeping conditions he thought the inn but wasnt sure.

"We've been staying at inns when not on the road.  Rooms are already arranged for." they have to be, with how often people love to rush to them and lock the door at a moment's notice.

"There should be some left, unless you prefer otherwise."

"Thanks, May!"

Pyrus stares at JB in confusion.  "'Sure thing, Meiou?'  Did I miss something?  Like a telepathic conversation, perhaps?

"Speaking of Meiou, far better to be the rabbit who's got a host of friends eager to help than some other poor sap with a memory curse and no one who cares about him.

"On the topic of rooms, if they happen to be in short supply I can give up mine and sleep on the roof."

Pyrus suggests it so matter-of-factly, you'd get the impression he thinks it perfectly normal.

Re: Æthercoil: Togetherness

Angel says, "I'm sure the innkeeper will be happy to take your coin all the same if you have a preference for sleeping on roofs..." She just assumes the guy has a love for stargazing or just sleeping under the stars generically. Can't blame him there. People leave their comfy homes often to go camping and do just that for a reason.

Angel continues, "I asked because I don't want Meiou out of my sight ever again. So I'm proposing we all get one big room if possible. But if not possible, I'll be in whatever room was arranged for Meiou."

Johnny just smiled at Pyrus.  "I was just agreeing with Angel here."

He then nodded at Angel on her plans.  "Looks like I'm sleeping indoors tonight.  Here's hoping nobody's a snorer."

Hearing angel he felt he should say something but
he couldn't think of what to respond with let alone
what body language to respond with. He was so confused
on this whole thing. It depressed him slightly as he
hated reminding himself that this might not even be
who he is.

"Normally I'd wonder about that, but given several circumstances I can't blame you at all Angel. You'll need to ask for a key to Jamie's wagon too if you want to keep the amount of suddenly locked doors between you and Meiou low, though."

"He's also got an interesting habit of hiding behind bushes to change appearance when you least expect it," Pyrus informs, trying to be helpful, "But in my opinion, the strangest thing of all was running away from Zerry.  A child.  No telling how much this curse he's under will force him to avoid contact with well-meaning people, so I agree with Tark."

To JB he answers, "Haven't noticed a problem with that so far."

Angel notices nobody objects and is satisfied. However, to Tark's suggestion, she looks at Jamie. "May I have a key to your wagon then, Jamie? I promise not to use it to snoop about unless it is to help you or the others. Perhaps we all should have one for that very reason."

Re: Æthercoil: Togetherness

"I call dibs on the couch," Johnny said, winking at Angel.

While Johnny winced at the thought of anyone getting into Jamie's wagon--from personal experience, to boot--Jamie just crosses her arms. "If it weren't for the Coven Secrets I need to guard in there, I would've," Jamie spoke in a stern voice.  "But if you need to, I'll escort you in there, but I have to be present."  Her voice softened a bit.  "When you have a place where you keep your secrets in, Angel, you'll understand."

Jamie then sighed.  "At least it's more palatable for the people than my original plan.  I doubt my other compatriots would approve of me being a bit hands-on to unlocking my Warlock's locked memories, and of course, there are the problems I have with enchantments."

"I'll vouch for Jamie's...ahem...security measures,"
Johnny whispers to Angel.  "The Black Forest Coven's got spells that they don't want others to see, for very dire reasons.  I've ran afoul of their protective wards once on accident, and once is plenty."

You get caught in enough traps your body starts to react on its own to their presence. He cringes hearing pryus Hey it was my first time meeting a super hyperactive centaur cut me some slack. its natural instinct as a theif to run first ask questions later.

"Maybe witches should stop carting forbidden secrets in a wagon around the countryside then. It would probably save everyone a lot of trouble all around, maybe do wonders for their reputation.  Leave something you can't even risk someone so much as looking at with the witches not on the road."

'Hey, did you hear the witches stopped rolling wagons full of forbidden secrets through towns?' 'Praise the gods!'

"Though it doesn't surprise me the biggest risk I've had all month, is the possibility of you hurting me for trying to protect Meiou. You're gonna need to up your wards game if you want to ever get away with forcing Meiou to be trapped inside someone else body with no control of their actions again."

Pyrus smirks and gives Meiou an nod.  "A fair point."

He then feigns disappointment and answers Tark, "But where's the fun in that?  Besides, if everyone were sensible, you'd be out of a job."

His instincts tell him to avoid the topic of body snatching like the plague, so Pyrus asks Jamie in a curious tone, "What other problems with enchantments?"

Re: Æthercoil: Togetherness

Angel gives Johnny a smile and pat-on-shoulder in response to claiming the couch.

To Jamie, Angel gets a sugery-sweet smile and shrugs. "That's why I asked, Jamie. I'm not out to invade anyone's privacy. Just making sure Meiou won't leave my sight is all."

Angel doesn't address Tark's thought. She isn't sure whether it would be better to leave secrets in a dungeon for adventurers to 100% guaranteed loot them, or if would be better to keep the secrets close at hand so that you at least are there to try and prevent people from getting them. Though having a place that teleports the secrets to one of many fortified locations every time one of those locations' doors is opened could possibly, maybe keep the secrets somewhat safe....

....she also doesn't comment yet about the Jamie / Tark animosity. Frankly, she doesn't know anyone here enough to really give opinions on how they treat each other (Even Meiou, given the odd circumstances). Plus, she's the stranger here and it isn't her place. Yet.

Angel is, however, going to stick by the one-room policy. *Especially* given the Jamie / Tark animosity. She is grateful this group has a built-in safeguard against them all conspiring against any one individual since it so far appears the group is split into two factions. Ironic how distrust among them makes her trust them more than if they all trusted each other.

To Johnny's whisper about wards, she looks over at him and whispers back, "You'll have to tell me about it sometime."

Re: Æthercoil: Togetherness

“You don’t want to see how good Charm Person works for me,” Jamie said as she reached for something on her hand.  “I’m a bit wary of Charm spells, even though they have their use.”  She then turned to Angel and placed a ring on her hand.  “I have a tracker enchantment put on that rabbit so that I know where he’s at, at all times.”  She rolled her eyes.  “You can’t imagine how much he gets into trouble.  While I can do it mentally, I made that ring to make things easier.  I’ll let you borrow it for now; with it on your finger, you’ll know exactly where he is, just stay on the same plane as he is.”

She then glared at Johnny.  “And don’t you go snooping in my wagon too, mousie boy.  Remember what happened last time.”  The momentary glow of the witch’s eyes shows that Jamie’s witchcraft is no joke.

Johnny gave Jamie a sheepish grin.  “Yes Ma’am.”

While Jamie placed the ring in her hand, she whispered in her ear, barely a whisper, but Angel could hear it bright as day.  “Be sure to see me once you go back to your main quest, maybe we can help each other.”

Meiou was pretty sure that ring had been made for someone else to track him
as he rarely ever left Jamies side and even if he did She could always
ask Sarah where he was. Not like she wouldnt tell her mistress where the
rabbit was. He was also starting to wonder if he would have to play
middle man to keep jamie and johnny from killing each other or picking fights wiht one another.

If Tark could read the narration, he would be glad to see he is so properly in line with his comments that it doesn't even register as a blip on Meiou's 'pointless fights with Jamie' radar.  Regardless of the ironic twist that Angel's quest to protect Meiou is more worried about Tark, than the witch with a habit of literally treating Meiou as her personal toy.

Pyrus rubs his chin and answers Jamie, "You might do well to get a wand of Charm Person, then.  They tend to be the weakest possible version of the spell."

He chooses not to contradict that he can't imagine how much Meiou gets into trouble and simply gives Tark a nod.  "Indeed."

Re: Æthercoil: Togetherness

Assuming the players are fine with moving along, here comes an overview of the coming events...

May's lessons start out involving a lot of making up your mind about things ahead of time. Like "If someone I know is my ally is SUDDENLY replaced by someone I know is an enemy, chances are, you are hallucinating and that person is still your ally." and "Do not attack unless attacked." and "Always use nonlethal attacks when possible, avoiding even permanent maiming if possible. The person you are fighting could be misled, mind-controlled, or even an ally."

May recalls the time that dopplegangers infiltrated a city SO thoroughly that every level of office had some kind of doppleganger. Even the leader of a church who May had befriended turned out to have been kidnapped and replaced by a doppleganger a week before May ever found out.

She then gets to the nitty gritty of how the first part segways into the actual resistance of psychic attacks. Stealing your mind is something you have to do consciously at first, but as you practice, it becomes natural over time. Most people already have mental resistance to some degree, such as if using Charm Person on a hero and then immediately telling them to kill a baby, it won't work. It is just a matter of strengthening your will and, like any muscle, you have to exercise it or it won't get stronger.

When it gets late, Angel sleeps in the same room as everyone. Angel continues to act in a calm, yet very matter-of-fact in-control manner. She gladly continues to have JB do menial tasks for her while avoiding having him do anything demeaning.

The next day, May gives the team some mental practice and then bids them farewell, explaining she needs to move on. With the team now trained in the basics of mental resistance, after an in-game week of practice, the team will all gain Resist 5 Psychic and immunity vs any attempts to cause anyone to do something they would not normally do.

For example!
Nobody can charm Angel to let Meiou out of her sight.
Nobody can charm Jamie to let them go into her wagon.
Nobody can charm Tark to remove handrails.
Nobody can charm Meiou to give up his disguises.
Nobody can charm Pyrus to kneel to a stranger.
Nobody can charm JB make a child cry.

Re: Æthercoil: Togetherness

One of those nights, however, Angel is woken up by a groaning Johnny who eventually wakes up in a cold sweat.  "Ngh...no....No....GHA!!!....[expletive]...Not again."

By now Angel knew what happened, which is why she made sure that her mouse companion slept near her along with Meiou:  It was the scene of how he got here.  Of him falling into an abyss of obscurity, of having his entire existence vanish before his eyes, of feeling forgotten and lost by anybody he knew, including himself.  (None of the other people around him knows of this.)

As Johnny rubbed his eyes to calm down his nerves, he tried to remember of people he knew he's supposed to know, and cursing himself on (one) not remembering any of them, and (two) having this nightmare in front of a group.

Tark is sure to thank the much shorter fellow green person for all their help.

Then nighttime drama occurs, of which sleeping through would set a poor precedent.  "Johnny is probably okay now that he's reminded he's surrounded mostly by people who care about his welfare. Though I get the feeling his problems are not exactly punchable."

Maybe Tark will be able to imitate Igatho on that front eventually, though.  Or at the very least manifest as a guy offering a bathrobe to anyone suffering cliche dreams of having to perform on stage with no pants.
