Re: JB meets Angel

"Much Appreciated," Johnny says, and then turns to Angel. "I have my own wagon if you don't have one.  I'll get a couple horses rented so we can move out."

Angel says, "I don't have my own wagon; came in on a taxi. So sure. Go for it."

Angel follows JB's lead and gets aboard his wagon!

Re: JB meets Angel

Angel finds that his wagon--a human-sized gypsy wagon with the horseshoe hood overhead is more than just his transport, but it's also his mobile home.  Behind the seat were various props that he uses as a Jester:  Balls for guggling, a small collection of magic trick props, a makeup counter with a mirror and--strange enough--a mask that would fit over his own face producing a constant smile, leaving his lower jaw open.  There were also a couple more costumes, including a spare motley and a couple costumes Angel would remember from famous plays and sketches.  There was a small bookcase with various notebooks, a couple chests, and a padded bed on the back to sleep on.  And next to that, enough food and supplies for him--and Angel--to use while traveling.

"Make yourself at home, my queen," Johnny said, jokingly referring to his Jester act, as he called for a couple horses to be hitched.

Re: JB meets Angel

"Thank you, Johnny." Angel replies to the invitation.

Angel enjoys exploring JB's home and then joins him out front, sitting shotgun. "Nice place. Looks comfy. I wouldn't mind having a mobile home m'self, but for now I'm happy just traveling."

Re: JB meets Angel

As she explores, she found out that the books are full of jokes of many stripes, from the harmless to the outright questionable; she remembered that Jesters are duty bound to speak the truth about matters, even if it's something normal people won't speak about.  Such as planned coups for example, or stories about affairs with the real people replaced by the fictional Bladderblat and Glunder clans.  (Angel closed those books before she blushed too much.)

There were also a couple other musical instruments, including an ornate shamisen.  When she moved her hand to get a closer look, she could feel the fur on her arm stand on end, a true sign of a magical property.

She also ruffled through some of Johnny's costumes, some of which she wouldn't mind Johnny try on to be more presentable, until she found one that was drawn to her: A regal royal gown in red and purple, fit for a fanciful Princess or even a Queen.  Not only did she found out that it would fit her, quite well to boot, but she also saw that crown Johnny made appear earlier.

When she wondered what other outfits she could wear, she heard Johnny return with the horses, as well as some waterskins and rations.  At that point, she settled on the shotgun seat.

"I would've just traveled myself," Johnny said as he pulled out a map, "But I had to bring my work with me.  I'd just stay in my motley all the time and travel as the Jester all the time, but for the occasional monster or robber."

He did another snap of his fingers and a ball of light appeared in his hand, illuminating the map.  "We're headed up toward Calais, right?"

Angel answers, "Yes. We are headed there..."

Angel did note the dress and was going to ask JB about it when he makes a comment that erases any thought about herself or what she wants to wear. "...seriously? *All* the time? I understand enjoying what you do, and your motley is nice, but why cover yourself up all the time? You'd deprive the world of ever seeing the real you."

In reply to Angel Bard (msg # 66):

Johnny ponders on what she said as he tells the horses to giddy up. After they get a move on, he just shrugs.  "True enough.  I just enjoy the gig that much, that's all.  And even with a Haversack from the Heward Backpack Company, I can only put so much in it."  He pauses.  "Probably why I got this Wagon here, so I can put everything down when I need to."

He then leans back.  "I guess it's because that Jester is a side to me that I wouldn't show otherwise.  I just feel a lot freer in that costume."  He turned over to Angel.  "I suppose you could sense that."

Re: JB meets Angel

Angel begins to see a lot more dimension to JB... and smiles. "Yeah. OK. That makes sense."

Then pulls the dress out from the back and says, "On another topic, then, why do you carry around royal purple dresses?"

Re: JB meets Angel

In reply to Angel Bard (msg # 68):

When she got back to the dress, she found that the silk fabric was of very high quality, with gold thread embroidery complementing the fabric texture.  It had on a matching underdress, a detachable robe, and even translucent slippers made to resemble glass.  Someone went all out to make this dress, and it really can be used for a real queen.  Even the Crown lying there behind it would just be the finishing touch to the grand ensemble.

"Someone actually thought I'd dress up in drag.  Only tried it once, but it just wasn't my thing." Johnny blinked for a second.  "Saaaaaay, weren't you going to look for a royal dress for when the time comes?  You can wear it if you want.  I don't have a need for it."

"I got it from a previous Gig before I saved that Prince from the coup." Johnny said.  "I was about to sell it, but...I could see that you've wondering how you'd look in it."  He then blinked again.  "Maybe when I'm in my motley again, you wear it on and take a special seat up on the front."

"Of course, my Queen,"  JB says, with that glint in his eye from his Jester side.  "What Queen deserves a gown worthy of her station."  He then leaned back, closed his eyes, and breathed.  "A Queen and her Jester, about to make a Kingdom of their own.  Who wouldn't want to hear about it."

Angel puts the dress back where it was. "I'm not looking for trouble, so I'll wait till we are done traveling."

She then looks back at JB. "Thank you for your friendship. I sure hope we get to have many adventures together."

Re: JB meets Angel

In reply to Angel Bard (msg # 76):

"Well, that would be as long as you'd like, Angel." He looked up, showing for the first time a bit of melancholy in his eyes.  "Usually I stay around for a gig and then get some clues that I might be overstaying my welcome and then move on, but since we're together, and I'm officially your Jester, I might as well tell you more about what I want out of adventuring:  It's a place that I can call my own.  A home that I can make into my own magic place.  Travelling from realm to realm spreading a smile or two is great for coin, but I really want a place where I can stay."

He then blushed a bit, feeling very embarrassed.  "How I got here is a bit too weird for some to believe.  I'm hesitant on telling people about it." He then looks over to Angel.  "I'll tell you if you want me to.  I'm duty bound as your Fool to tell the truth."

Re: JB meets Angel

Angel headtilts. "...yes, I would like to hear it."

Angel is trying to figure out what people would dislike about this guy that would cause them to kick him to the curb or tell him to get lost. But figures she'll be better off just asking. Now to find a nice way to ask without it being hurtful.

Re: JB meets Angel

Johnny closes his eyes.  "You've probably heard of some people who came here through rifts in reality.  I came from one.  I used to be in a world where I was set up to be a beloved mouse of a fledgling animated studio.  Something that would bring a return to something magical that was lost a century earlier.  I doubt you'd remember; it was lost with the rest of the Lost Age.  How I remember it is that everything was fine and normal one moment, and the next, everything vanished into nothing, and I felt that he as falling into a black void, only to wake up in a ruined castle. I walked around in a desolate and forgotten amusement park when a traveling Court Jester found me and took me in.  With my perchance for spreading happiness and smiles wherever I go, becoming an official Jester was second nature to me, but..."

He leans back.  "I can still remember falling into oblivion, completely forgotten by anyone who would care, if even known at all."  He sighs, the first time Angel saw sadness in JB.  "I still don't understand what happened back then.  Or even before, if that world was even real or not.  Eventually, I just decided that I couldn't do anything about the past, and just move on with my life the best I can.  And thus I dived into my Jester role, something that helps bring out the parts of me I'd like to show best."

Even as Johnny's eyes water, Angel can still sense a spark of warmth in his eyes, a stubborn ember in his heart that refuses to die out, no matter what.

Notes:  What happened to Johnny happened before, to at least one of a more known character.  https://twisted-wind.deviantart.com/art/Os1-344730073  Was Johnny a cartoon character before he became a flesh and blood mousefolk?  Who knows.  Not even JB knows for sure.

Re: JB meets Angel

Angel stares at JB for a bit, as if mulling over what to respond with. "That's some... spooky stuff. Mysterious. Though sounds like a planar shift. Well you are correct that I don't know anything about it. There are people out there, I'm sure, who specialize in learning about it, but it is called the Lost Age for a reason..."

She then reaches over to put a hand on JB's chest where his heart is to feel for a heartbeat. "You feel real enough to me. Lemme ask you this: Does it matter whether it was real if you are here now and real enough to both yourself and the people around you?"

Re: JB meets Angel

Johnny blushes and even smiles a bit as Angel places her hand over his new tunic, and Angel feels a quite strong heartbeat.  The heart of someone who could face anything without much angst, even planar shifts.  "Well, to me, it was real enough, and that was fine for me."  He placed his hand over Angel's.  "It was as real as this world is, I suppose."

He then picked up what Angel said earlier.  "I've talked to a couple of those folk you're talking about, but they don't have any clue about it either.  When they call it 'the Lost Age,' they weren't kidding."

Johnny lets her feminine, soft, and gentle hand slip from under his own.  "You'll have my thanks on that, Angel."  He then moved a bit closer to Angel in his chair, and made sure that the horses are trudging along while the sun begins to set.

Re: JB meets Angel

Angel wonders how she wound up in this situation. Of all the places in all the world, an archery contest that brought a nearby mouse jester to seemingly fall for her at first sight (or at least pretend to), and now claiming he was planar hopping? Seems just fantastical enough to not be made-up. But that doesn't stop her from doubting.

Much more likely the poor guy was driven nuts by some traumatic event.

Still, if he *is* crazy, he's as nice as crazies come. And crazy or not, Angel would feel guilty not to offer comfort on the chance this guy believes everything he just said.

And so, she reaches her hand up to gently pet JB's head.

Re: JB meets Angel

Johnny felt Angel's hand weave through his hear, felt her warm touch, and even though he knew it would take some time for her to fully warm up to him, he knew she really cared.  Especially after all that he told her.

Long ago, he thought he knew what was real or not, and was assured that he was indeed real.  Now, not so much.  Seeing one reality fade away before his eyes, only to fall into another completely foreign to him, with the notion that what was might not actually be real in the first place.  (Or is this real now?)  Indeed, it would've driven anyone a little off-kilter.  But he made the most of it.

And now, by chance, and the possibility of someone stealing his heart at first sight, he has someone that cares for him, something he so longed for.

He turned to Angel and smile.  "Thank you," he said.

And he murred contently as he continued to scritch him, as the signposts showing the distance to Parnast count down into the single digits.
