JB meets Angel

Huntsville is currently having a festival involving competitions, games, and other fun activities. Among the competitions is an archery contest. "...and he has quite the stellar reputation! You know what they say about elven archers! Please welcome Aothin Moonrise!" a pause is had for loud applause to be given to the elven archer stepping up to the second archery stall.

The announcer continues, "Also we have a rabbitfolk lady joining us today! They are known for being quick and dexterous, but will that be enough for this little lady to compete with the other fine archers? Please welcome Angel Bard!"

A black-furred rabbitfolk walks up to the third archery stall. She gets a mix of applause and oos and ahs of wonder.

"And of course, we can't forget our local champion. With 3 tournament wins in a row under his belt, he is making a name for himself here in Huntsville. But will his skill be enough to win this time? Please welcome Derek Hunt!"

A charismatic human with brown hair and perfect teeth steps up to the first archery stall.

Others are introduced until there is about 12 archers. Many of them have something interesting about them, but the first three were announced first for obvious reasons. Though the crowd seems torn between Aothin and Derek, nobody seems to think Angel much more than a spectacle since smaller folk don't normally compete with the larger folk in their tournaments...

JB meets Angel

...They were more used to smaller folk having a more entertaining role, as is the case of JB, the mousefolk dressed in his flashiest Jester Motley, bruxing for the kids. In his costume, people thought that the large round ears and fussy face were part of his makeup.  Or an elaborate mask with a working mouth and twitching nose.

As Angel Bard stepped up to her spot in the archery competition, JB was juggling three daggers with practiced ease, while balancing a fourth on that black plum for his nose.

When one of the festival game stands had an opening, JB took all four daggers and balanced it on one finger.  With his free hand, he took out a silver coin he got from his performances earlier to buy in.

"Watch this," he said with his trademark smile, as he then added the ball with the other four daggers, jugging the daggers while playing hacky sack with the ball and with a well-timed bicycle kick, sent the ball right on the sweet spot of the pyramid of cans.

All of the cans, including the rigged one, flew off the table they were set on.

Everybody was awed at the Jester Mouse, who just bowed for the crowd, even the one manning the game, who had to pull off a large plush bear--larger then Johnny himself--to hand to him.

"Whoa," Johnny said. "Looks like folks'll have a field day seeing me lugging this around!"  He then spun around in a dance move with the plush animal as he moves through the crowd, picking up some more coins for his performance.

JB meets Angel

Upon seeing how her competitors do, Angel applauds them with everyone else. She scores a bulls-eye on her turn just like most of the competition. After all, it was only the first round.

The second round rules out a large chunk, however, as 6 contestants get eliminated for being slightly off compared to the other 6. Then the third round eliminates all but Angel, Aothin and Derek.

If Angel could have seen JB's display of pure amazing, she would have been thoroughly impressed. But that would have to wait until she was done with the competition.

Some of the people watching the archery competition spot JB. A human boy who had watched JB earlier is there and says, "Hey Johnny! You should check this out! Our local champ archer is up against an elven archer and some bunny!"

Johnny's ears twitch from under his Motley cap when he heard that.  "Rabbit folk, eh?"  He mused as he spun the oversized (at least for him) teddy bear over his back to head to the stands.  "This I gotta see."

As Angel was about to go into the next round, she could see the colorful rodent skipping around with the plush and the kids in tow.  As she steps up to the stands, she could even hear his cheers over the crowd.

JB meets Angel

Angel may be doing this for herself. But that is only part of it... she is also doing this to rise awareness that rabbitfolk are not to be overlooked or regarded as less. So in a remote way, one could argue she is doing this for mousefolk as well. And seeing JB in the crowd brought that thought to mind and gave her already large ego an added boost. She looks directly at him with a knowing smile, then turns to look at her target and lets her arrow loose!

"Wow, folks! That's a bullseye at 150 yards! I think I see the other two taking Angel a bit more seriously now!"

Aothin mutters something about never having taken Angel lightly and fires his arrow, also hitting a bullseye. So does the local champ Derek. The targets move farther, Angel glancing at JB and the crowd each time, until finally, Angel hits 230 yards and the others don't quite make a bullseye. The crowd goes nuts! Lots of cheering... and loud booing as well. Some are beginning to claim Angel cheated.

When JB saw that Angel was giving him a smile, he couldn't help but act out all smitten at the rabbit, each time with all the more exaggeration as a proper Jester would be.  Some even thought that he has fallen in love with the rabbitfolk.

And when she won, Johnny actually rushed the stands to give the rabbit a warm hug in congratulations, almost taken her back at the rodent's display, but as he lifted Angel's arms in victory, he whispered something in her ear.

"We best take out spoils and scram, my dear, before those spoilsports ruin it for the both of us."

JB meets Angel

Angel is taken aback by the hug.

Aothin mutters to Derek and Derek nods. Derek yells, "May I have your attention please?!" and the crowd goes quiet. "I have made a new friend; Aothin! And if I should have such fortune, I will have a second friend in Angel! These two were the finest marksmen I've had the honor of competing against and both Aothin and I were admiring just how skilled Angel is. In this kind of competition, if you are off by a fraction of a centimeter, if a rogue wind blows, ...sometimes you lose simply from bad luck! But I assure you all that Aothin was here to ensure no magic was used to cheat and at these distances, only magic COULD help you cheat!"

This seems to have quieted *most* of the objections of the crowd... if Angel's competitors are clearing her name, then most have the sense to accept that. Somewhere in the crowd, someone claims that Aothin and Derek were bought off, but that voice gets pretty well ignored.

Angel glances at JB and shrugs with a smile. "...I guess we'll be OK?"

Derek approaches the two and publicly congratulates Angel. "I'm going to have a party to celebrate this competition. Would you and your boyfriend join Aothin and I?"

Angel blushes. "He's... not my boyfriend, I just met him." she looks at JB, "But there is no doubt he's a friend now..."

JB meets Angel

Johnny gasped in delight as she called him a friend.  "I shall be more than honored to be your friend, my sweet Angel of the Night."  He did an elaborate bow in front of the rabbit folk and kissed her hand, looking up at her bewildered eyes as if she was a Royal Goddess, so full of devotion and adoration.  "All you need to do is ask me to be a friend, and I'll be forever yours."

With a pirouette of a spin, he sprang over to her side, and offered her his arm, "Nothing will make me happy if you chose me as your jester, my Angel.  Nothing fills me with such joy than to see you smile."

This close, Angel could see the spark of merriment in his eyes.  He's clearly enjoying the act of a love-struck clown, maybe a bit too much; she could tell that he does indeed like her."

Or maybe it's because of what someone in the back said.  "Oh no, that Jester's got that look again.  Last time he was this smitten, he became a dragon's pet for a month."  Another one just shook his head and said, "Masochist."

At her hand being kissed, Angel places her other hand to her cheek, flustered. Blushing, she smiles and says, "Why... thank you. Alright. I'm asking: Be my friend."

Soon, the pair are guided to The Purple Unicorn, a local tavern that stays clean and has good food codes. There is a chair labeled "Number 1" and Derek seats Angel there. He offers to JB that he can sit caddy corner to Angel if he likes (Since she is at the head of the table, that is the nearest chair to Angel's).

Aothin raises an eyebrow. "You had this planned for whoever won? Whether it was you, me, Angel or anyone else?"

Derek says, "Yup! I knew that no matter who won, it would be a fun thing."

Aothin says, "Don't you think it would have been a bit much if you had won?"

Derek says, "Hmm? What makes you say that?"

Aothin says, "....you know what? Let's just enjoy the food."

Johnny couldn't contain his excitement as he gave Angel another squeeze.  "Oh thank you, my sweet.  I'm sure to be a good friend to you."  She then walked over to the Purple Unicorn with her arm in his.  His smile was bright enough to lighten his whole face as he pulled chair "Number 1" for Angel and made sure she's set in, before taking the caddy corner chair making sure he stays next to her.

"So tell me, Angel, what brings you to this fair fare?"  Johnny said as he produced a flicker of flame from his fingers.  With a flick of his wrist, the flame bounced off a couple candles, lighting them.  "I'd love to hear more about you."

For some reason, leaning against Johnny's chair, within easy reach, was a fiddle colored as flashy as his motley.

Derek says, "Sorry. Couldn't help but overhear... if an adventuring team is what you are looking for, I overheard there were a couple nearby. One in Parnast... although rumor has it that group is mostly just working on construction and setting up the town. There is another adventuring team in the town just north of there. Heard there was a red-haired elf, a child centaur, a pretty-boy human, a half-orc, and a rabbit folk in their merry little band."

Angel raises an eyebrow. "...well aren't you just a wealth of useful info. Thanks."

Much to some of the staffs surprise the squirrel hefted up a keg of some sort of beverage poured some into a glass. she handed the glass to one of the kitchen staff while she recorked the barrel and put it down. she thanked the staff and took the glass as she headed out back to Angel and company. "Oh, your thanks just warms my heart," Johnny said, his smile beaming.  "I can't think of a better compliment."

He then leaned back, knowing that it'll take some time for Angel to warm up to having a Jester for a friend, and reached for his fiddle.  He started to strum it with his fingers, creating a melody that filled Angel's ears, then the others on the table, and then the whole room.  He hoped that it'll put everyone at ease with the happy tune.  He looked at the human and elf and could see that they're just looking over at the mouse with a relaxed smile on their faces.

His voice is just as melodic as he muses out loud.  "Some people tend to act the part, of being nice, as if it were a mask to hide their true intentions.  I'm not that kind of mousie, heh-heh.  I just like making people smile, to make their day a bit brighter.  It must be working because I'm a famous Court Jester.  I spent a month with a Royal Family where I entertained their prince son, saved the king from a coup along the way. Lotsa fun. I do hope that I can spread out to other lands."

He then looks up to Angel, seeing if his music has any effect on the rabbitfolk.  "I've heard of a couple places that you might be going, if you wish, I'd like to go with you.  I'm sure that someone of my talents will prove valuable."

"I am Sir Johnny Briz, my Angel Bard, I am the Jester of Kings, the Fool of Dragons, and a Trickster for the Gods.  It is my eternal duty to spread happiness and merriment wherever I roam, to be welcomed into any kingdom I come to, and entertain any and all royal that takes me in.  Such is my charge and my calling, which I accept with a smile on my face, a song on my lips, and a dance to my step."

And then knelt before Angel and held up his fiddle, as if offering it to her.  "And if you wish, I shall be your accompaniment for your next quest.  Nothing will make me more happy in my life than to be your Jester for a time."

Angel watches JB's performance and spiel and seems amused. She samples the carrot juice to give Sassy an honest opinion.

But before giving an opinion, Angel looks at JB and says, "I don't see why not, Johnny. Please do. Though this brings up a question... have any suggestions on how I might receive a noble title?"

She quietly admires the sheer freedom Johnny seems to have. Both physically and mentally. And although Angel just could never bring herself to be a clown for anyone, this doesn't mean she can't admire Johnny for his attitude and willingness to be such.

Johnny's smile could never be brighter when he heard Angel's acceptance.  And he seemed to float up to the curled tips of his boots.  "Oh Happy Day!" He exclaimed out loud as he clapped and skipped in place.  "Happy Happy Happy! I could never be more so!"

He then stopped, almost frozen in place.  He looked up as if trying to think of something.  He even put his finger to his painted chin as if in thought.

"A noble title of your own?"  He said, tilting his head and tapping his foot.  "You have to have done a very brave deed in order to gain one.  Or have a royal fall in love with you and make you his bride.  Or!"  He pointed up.  "We can find one of those abandoned castles lying around, spruce it up, develop the surrounding areas and create a Kingdom of our own!  Ha-ha!" He accentuated that last part with a wide swing of his arms.

He then looked back at Angel, looking into her eyes with adoration, "But why would you want to have a noble title, my Lady Angel.  You are already my Queen.  Anything you ask of me I shall do for you, as your royal jester.  I will be your noble servant and will aid you all through your quest."

He then moved closer to Angel with sparkles in his eyes, imagining her as a regal queen in her crown and gown.  "What can I do for you, my Angel?"

Angel ponders the abandoned castle idea. Why buy land when you can take land for free? Well you also need to ask why it was abandoned in the first place... still, she appreciates Sassy offering an option as well.

Angel offers the empty cup back to Sassy. "I never figured I would particularly like to have carrots in drink form. You have made that thought obsolete. It's rather nice, actually... and I can see not just rabbitfolk, but the larger folk as well liking it. I'll bet at least one of the humans present will tell you that you have a market among their kind as well." (OOC: Kind of imagining a partial V8 juice here)

She turns her attention to JB again. "I don't suppose tailoring is among your skills? Or that you might have a friend who is a tailor?"

With a flourish he makes a silk cloth appear from out of his hands. "I might be able to fix a cloth or two, in a pinch, but my talents are for entertaining and merriment."

He holds the cloth in one hand and with the other, waves his fingers in an exaggerated cast, "Music, dance, juggling, tumbling, slapstick, jokes, pratfalls, whole acts and skits,"  He looked around and whispered the next one, "Other things I can't mention here," He then spoke up, "and even...magic."

At that last word, the cloth appeared to float over his hand, with the edges draping over the sides.

"A gift of my heart, my Queen."
He said as he flips the cloth aside, revealing a glittering golden crown with jewels.

Angel furrows her brow and lets go of JB. "...no, that does not sound OK."

She sighs, "I guess depending on what Meiou owes... and why... is whether I will be talking with Pippkin or not. Do you know where I can find Meiou right now?"

Angel smiles. "Thank you, Sassy. Please show me." she heads to the back to look for Sassy's wagon and to let the squirrel show her this map she spoke of.

On the way to the wagon, Angel looks over to JB. "I do like your jester look. But I am also curious how you really look. And since we are going to be traveling... well... just make sure you are dressed for travel, whether that means staying a jester, being comfortable, or donning some kind of armor. I'll be putting on my own armor, m'self. Oh right... here."

Angel hands the crown over to JB. "Keep this safe for now." she smiles, patting the mouse on the back.

In reply to Angel Bard (msg # 52):

Johnny murrs as he's patted, and then takes the crown, place the reappearing cloth over it, and with a slap of his hand, makes it disappear.  "No, I don't always wear my motley all the time.  Especially when I'm traveling.  If you can excuse me..."

Along the way to the wagon, there were a set of restrooms, of which Johnny ducked into one of the smaller ones.  Within a matter of seconds, he reappears, revealing to his Queen the mousefolk under the mask.  Angel knew it was him because of the two colors of his ears, but he looked quite handsome enough with his grey and flesh-toned fur.  He had on a dark green tunic, black pants, and similar green elven boots.  His belt included various pouches, including a set of thieve's tools.  He slung a backpack with a "Heward Backpacks" logo over one shoulder and an ornate lute over the other.

"I hope this is appropriate, Angel," Johnny said, the spark in his eyes and the eager smile were still there even though he was acting informal, compared to his Jester side.  "Once you set on a decent outfit, I'll try to match your colors.  We're supposed to be a team after all."

As they continued over, Johnny mused to himself.  "A kingdom of our own, with you as our Queen.  The stuff of dreams, is it not?"

She hands it over to Angel showing her Were here right now and i think your friends said the group was here she pointed out to the rabbitfolk.

Angel nods. "Thank you very much, Sassy. What do I owe you for the map?" she is reaching for her coin purse. She doesn't haggle. But the young lady seems to know her stuff about appraisal and knows what the map is worth. Still, even if Sassy charges slightly more than the map is normally worth, Angel will pay it without even mentioning it.

After she pays for the map, she looks at JB. "Now there's a mouse ready to travel. Lookin' good, Johnny."

She goes to get dressed herself and steps out wearing adventuring gear that bespeaks her profession of ranger. Rugged and tough, but ready to defend herself at the drop of a hat.

Johnny took the package.  "Give Rose my thanks," he said as he opened it.

Angel sees that her companion got a tunic, not unlike what he had on right now.  But it also had a slip of paper for instructions.

"This is a color-changing tunic," Johnny said as he ducked to one side of the wagon to switch tunics.  When he returned it looked like he didn't switch, but then he grabbed the tail of the tunic and said, "Okay, let's make you Red."

Starting from where he held the tail and spreading out throughout the tunic, the color changed from brown to red.

He looked over at Angel after the color changed.  "Now we look like a team."

Re: JB meets Angel

Angel finds that his wagon--a human-sized gypsy wagon with the horseshoe hood overhead is more than just his transport, but it's also his mobile home.  Behind the seat were various props that he uses as a Jester:  Balls for guggling, a small collection of magic trick props, a makeup counter with a mirror and--strange enough--a mask that would fit over his own face producing a constant smile, leaving his lower jaw open.  There were also a couple more costumes, including a spare motley and a couple costumes Angel would remember from famous plays and sketches.  There was a small bookcase with various notebooks, a couple chests, and a padded bed on the back to sleep on.  And next to that, enough food and supplies for him--and Angel--to use while traveling.

"Make yourself at home, my queen," Johnny said, jokingly referring to his Jester act, as he called for a couple horses to be hitched.

Re: JB meets Angel

As she explores, she found out that the books are full of jokes of many stripes, from the harmless to the outright questionable; she remembered that Jesters are duty bound to speak the truth about matters, even if it's something normal people won't speak about.  Such as planned coups for example, or stories about affairs with the real people replaced by the fictional Bladderblat and Glunder clans.  (Angel closed those books before she blushed too much.)

There were also a couple other musical instruments, including an ornate shamisen.  When she moved her hand to get a closer look, she could feel the fur on her arm stand on end, a true sign of a magical property.

She also ruffled through some of Johnny's costumes, some of which she wouldn't mind Johnny try on to be more presentable, until she found one that was drawn to her: A regal royal gown in red and purple, fit for a fanciful Princess or even a Queen.  Not only did she found out that it would fit her, quite well to boot, but she also saw that crown Johnny made appear earlier.

When she wondered what other outfits she could wear, she heard Johnny return with the horses, as well as some waterskins and rations.  At that point, she settled on the shotgun seat.

"I would've just traveled myself," Johnny said as he pulled out a map, "But I had to bring my work with me.  I'd just stay in my motley all the time and travel as the Jester all the time, but for the occasional monster or robber."

He did another snap of his fingers and a ball of light appeared in his hand, illuminating the map.  "We're headed up toward Calais, right?"

He then leans back.  "I guess it's because that Jester is a side to me that I wouldn't show otherwise.  I just feel a lot freer in that costume."  He turned over to Angel.  "I suppose you could sense that."

When she got back to the dress, she found that the silk fabric was of very high quality, with gold thread embroidery complementing the fabric texture.  It had on a matching underdress, a detachable robe, and even translucent slippers made to resemble glass.  Someone went all out to make this dress, and it really can be used for a real queen.  Even the Crown lying there behind it would just be the finishing touch to the grand ensemble.

"Someone actually thought I'd dress up in drag.  Only tried it once, but it just wasn't my thing." Johnny blinked for a second.  "Saaaaaay, weren't you going to look for a royal dress for when the time comes?  You can wear it if you want.  I don't have a need for it."

He then blushed a bit, feeling very embarrassed.  "How I got here is a bit too weird for some to believe.  I'm hesitant on telling people about it." He then looks over to Angel.  "I'll tell you if you want me to.  I'm duty bound as your Fool to tell the truth."

Re: JB meets Angel

Johnny closes his eyes.  "You've probably heard of some people who came here through rifts in reality.  I came from one.  I used to be in a world where I was set up to be a beloved mouse of a fledgling animated studio.  Something that would bring a return to something magical that was lost a century earlier.  I doubt you'd remember; it was lost with the rest of the Lost Age.  How I remember it is that everything was fine and normal one moment, and the next, everything vanished into nothing, and I felt that he as falling into a black void, only to wake up in a ruined castle. I walked around in a desolate and forgotten amusement park when a traveling Court Jester found me and took me in.  With my perchance for spreading happiness and smiles wherever I go, becoming an official Jester was second nature to me, but..."

He leans back.  "I can still remember falling into oblivion, completely forgotten by anyone who would care, if even known at all."  He sighs, the first time Angel saw sadness in JB.  "I still don't understand what happened back then.  Or even before, if that world was even real or not.  Eventually, I just decided that I couldn't do anything about the past, and just move on with my life the best I can.  And thus I dived into my Jester role, something that helps bring out the parts of me I'd like to show best."

Even as Johnny's eyes water, Angel can still sense a spark of warmth in his eyes, a stubborn ember in his heart that refuses to die out, no matter what.

Notes:  What happened to Johnny happened before, to at least one of a more known character.  https://twisted-wind.deviantart.com/art/Os1-344730073  Was Johnny a cartoon character before he became a flesh and blood mousefolk?  Who knows.  Not even JB knows for sure.

Well you are correct that I don't know anything about it. There are people out there, I'm sure, who specialize in learning about it, but it is called the Lost Age for a reason..."

She then reaches over to put a hand on JB's chest where his heart is to feel for a heartbeat. "You feel real enough to me. Lemme ask you this: Does it matter whether it was real if you are here now and real enough to both yourself and the people around you?"

Re: JB meets Angel

Angel wonders how she wound up in this situation. Of all the places in all the world, an archery contest that brought a nearby mouse jester to seemingly fall for her at first sight (or at least pretend to), and now claiming he was planar hopping? Seems just fantastical enough to not be made-up. But that doesn't stop her from doubting.

Much more likely the poor guy was driven nuts by some traumatic event.

Still, if he *is* crazy, he's as nice as crazies come. And crazy or not, Angel would feel guilty not to offer comfort on the chance this guy believes everything he just said.

And so, she reaches her hand up to gently pet JB's head.

Re: JB meets Angel

Johnny felt Angel's hand weave through his hear, felt her warm touch, and even though he knew it would take some time for her to fully warm up to him, he knew she really cared.  Especially after all that he told her.

Long ago, he thought he knew what was real or not, and was assured that he was indeed real.  Now, not so much.  Seeing one reality fade away before his eyes, only to fall into another completely foreign to him, with the notion that what was might not actually be real in the first place.  (Or is this real now?)  Indeed, it would've driven anyone a little off-kilter.  But he made the most of it.

And now, by chance, and the possibility of someone stealing his heart at first sight, he has someone that cares for him, something he so longed for.

He turned to Angel and smile.  "Thank you," he said.

And he murred contently as he continued to scritch him, as the signposts showing the distance to Parnast count down into the single digits.
