Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

The group continues their pursuit of the elven caravan which a halfelf bard named Evero who you believe is the current incarnation of your father.  In Rosehaven you confirmed that he is still with the caravan.  Apparently it seems to be headed to the Greenheart but it seems like it stops at most towns to trade, so you figure you can catch up...eventually.  There is some talk of trying to take a shortcut, but no one knows enough geography (know:geography) to be comfortable trying to take a shortcut.

Makoto can make potions, scrolls, and wondrous items at cost;
You can also ask her for an infusions(alchemist list only) for free.  She will provide 1 infusion per day per person.
Alchemist
1: Crafter's Fortune, Disguise Self, Shield, Ant Haul, Anticipate Peril,
Bomber's Eye, Endure Elements, Expeditious Retreat, Enlarge Person,
   Spirit Share, clw, Adhesive Spittle
2: Alchemical Allocation, cmw, see invisibility
Witch
0: Arcane Mark, Bleed, Dancing Lights, Daze, Detect Fiendish Presence,
Detect Magic, Detect Poison, Grasp, Guidance, Light, Mending, Message,
Putrefy Food and Drink, Read Magic, Resistance, Spark, Stabilize,
   Touch of Fatigue
1: animate ropeA, protection from evilP, Dancing Lantern, Ears of the City,
Mage Armor, Shadow Trap, Unbreakable Heart, Sculpted Cape, obscuring mist, cause fear
2: Glitterdust, Burdened Thoughts, Summon Swarm
Billowing Skirt, Commune with Birds, Mark of Blood, Detect Relations

Since Conan didn't care enough to comment on this (chp4/msg265), Yin and Makoto will decide;
quote:
Quasit Ambush
200gp  quasit body of magical components/trophy to Makoto
2000gp  +2 con belt to Makoto
She will pay Yin and Conan 740gp each

Conan; gets 740gp and is there anything you want Makoto to make for you?

After several days of travel and no significant encounters, the group has camped in a flat rocky area.  That night you hear typical wilderness sounds, the rustle of small animals, wolves howling in the distance and owls, etc...  As the group is getting ready in the morning, Conan and Ragnar hear the sounds of movement coming from the south a couple hundred feet away.  Many things are running through the brush heading in your general direction.  The large rocky terrain prevents you from seeing what is making the noise.
You have eaten breakfast, said your morning prayers/studies for magical spells and packed up and ready to go.  Yin is working on getting the 2nd cart horse ready, the 1st horse is already in it's harness attached to the cart.  Makoto is in the wagon getting things inside ready for travel.  Both Conan and Ragnar are just getting done saddling their horses.  Smokey and the other 2 dogs are curled up next to the remains of the fire.  Chito and Miyogi are around, but you don't know where.

With the news of impending company, Conan will promptly leave his horse alone and get Smoky to come to him by signaling to him to follow Conan into the woods.    Moving towards the small copse of trees in front of the wagon.    Once there, he'll fade into the shadows (Stealth) not moving but ready to attack with giant sword and the dog is ready to attack as well.

Conan, I said brush not trees.  There are no trees, but the brush can be used to hide in.

Conan calls over Smokey, draws out his sword and hides in the brush.
Ragnar gives a warning in a normal voice and then draws out his sword.
Yin hears Ragnar's warning and moves to unhook the horse from the cart so it can defend itself if needed.
There is no response from Makoto inside the wagon, maybe she didn't hear.
The dogs and horses begin to get nervous as the now they can hear the movement, which is coming from several sources from the south.
Chito and Miyogi are still nowhere to be seen.

And then several things happen at once.  An elf boy (about 13ish) comes running around a rock and out of the brush.  He wears dirty, torn commoner clothes and seems tired and out of breath.  He is covered in scratches and bruises.  Perhaps he is out of breath because following the boy is a troll.  The troll is in the middle of the brush, bulldozing his way towards the boy.  4 wolves also come into view.

Your turn on round 1
- Brush is difficult terrain and thick enough to hide in
- the troll is just off the map where it says Troll
- 3 wolves are on the map, 1 wolf is 40' off the map on the road where it says wolf
- This is the elf boy, he is holding a stick;

Round 1
Conan and Smokey stay hidden and wait.
Ragnar attacks and then moves back.
Yin casts mirror image and gets 3 images and says, "They are worgs not wolves brother Ragnar, and they are smarter than a wolf."
Makoto moves to the back of the wagon and will take a shield extract.  She says excitably "Worgs?  Really!"
Chito and Miyogi are still nowhere to be seen.
The horses all delay, they are trained to attack with a rider and so are waiting for directions.  But they will attack if attacked, or if a worg gets close enough.
The 2 dogs start barking.

Elf boy sees the horses, wagon and armed people and runs toward the wagon yelling with what breath he has, "HELP, there are worgs and trolls after me."  Yes, he said trolls...plural.  He dives under the "safety" of the wagon.

Worg1 howls out something that sounds similar to the language the troll used (Giant), then move next to the troll.
Worg2 also howls something in giant, and then moves over to the troll, staying out of Conan's sword range.
Worg3 moves around behind a rock.
Worg4 moves up onto the nearby rocks,
The Troll comes crashing through the brush and through the gap in the rocky terrain. He spies the horses and bellows something, but no ones understands.

From off the map to the south is an answering howl...

Your turn on round 2

Round 2
Conan and Smokey move to his horse, use the collar on Smokey and wait for the troll, sword ready.  Smokey, now size large, will ready (an action) used to attack.  The horse seems a little unsettled by the large sized dog. Miyogi comes flying in from the north and lands on the roof of the wagon.
Your sword requires 2 hands, so you can't have both your sword and a potion ready at the same time.
Ragnar gets out his infusion, takes it and moves 5'.
Handle Animal is a move action, pulling out a potion/infusion is a move action and taking it is a standard action (unless you are an Alchemist and it is your infusion, then it is like casting a spell).
Yin will target the troll and worgs to the south with a Burst of Radiance.  Both worgs are blinded, but the troll blinks at the right time and is fine.  All 3 take 12 dam.
Makoto jumps down off the back of the wagon and says in celestial "Conan, Enlarge Person on you, don't move too far away" and she starts casting a spell.
Chito is still nowhere to be seen.
The horses all delay, they are trained to attack with a rider and so are waiting for directions.  But they will attack if attacked, or if a worg gets close enough.
The 2 dogs continue barking.

Elf boy pants heavily.

The Troll regenerates some of the BoR spell and looks surprised by the sudden appearance and growth of a (now) horse sized dog.  But it seems fixated by the horse and charges, hitting for 11 dam.  The horse and Smokey both attack (horse delayed, Smokey readied).  Smokey hits twice (1 ready + 1 Aoo = 29 dam) but the horse gets unlucky and misses.
Worg1 is badly hurt and hangs back, hiding in the brush.
Worg2 move (blind at 1/2 speed) over into a position near Conan, probably will try to flank Conan when it can see.
Worg3 bounds up onto the rock as a jumping point into the brush and moves to attack Yin's horse, waits for worg4... the horse gets a chance to attack and misses both attacks.
Worg4 charges and attacks Yin's horse, hitting for 6 dam.  As it runs by the dog bites at it but misses.
...Worg3 attacks the horse, hitting for 10 dam and the horse goes down, dying.

Round 3
Conan get's Enlarged...

Conan will now send Smoky towards the red worg.   He will in turn step out in such a way as to be seen by troll 2 to draw him towards Conan's side of the battle.   (Maybe by having Smoky cross the battle, he can draw the worgs off the other areas of focus.)

Ok Ragnar sees a split battle taking shape. We need to deal with one threat first, then the other he thinks. The trolls will take all of us to kill, and the wargs are threatening the spellcasters so they need to be dealt with first. So...

Ragnar is going to spring attack warg 7 again, but will then move 5’ to the left, between the warg and the dog.

Conan, let’s get rid of these Wargs then we can get the trolls! Help the ladies!

Listening to the wisdom of what Ragnar said, Conan will now move towards worgs 5 and 6.   Conan will have Smoky and the horse move towards the wagon.    (The dog will spook the horse into movement and will herd him towards the wagon, whereupon Smoky will guard where the horse is and that side of the wagon.)   Conan will try to get into a position to cleave both worg 5/6.

Round 5
Conan seems confused about what to do and looks from the red worg back to the worgs attacking Makoto....  Smokey waits for Conan...  Miyogi waits...
Makoto pulls out a wand and casts mage armor as she moves back against the front of the wagon.
Chito is still nowhere to be seen.
Yin steps back 5', drops her club and uses BoR on Worg5 and Worg6, both are injured and 1 is blind.
... Conan decides to order Smokey to herd the horse, forgetting that that is not a trick his dog knows, and then moves to engage the injured worgs 5 and 6, using cleave to attack both.  As he attacks, both clearly look like hits, but RedWorg howls an eerie howl and Conan's attack against worg6 misses through sheer luck.  Worg5 dies.
Smokey looks confused at what Conan wants and just follows Conan and attacks Worg6, again missing through sheer luck.  Miyogi flies over to WarhorseC and tries to use Handle Animal and fails to move the horse, "Come on horse, move...move you stupid nag, move".
Makoto says, "I think that red worg may have the same control of luck as I do." (protective luck hex)

Unless you want to stabilize one, all the worgs die.  Both trolls will need to be killed by acid.  Yin uses Acid Splash and kills them.  Ragnar keeps an eye out for the 2 that got away.  Conan will heal himself with the infusion and then, on the advice of Miyogi, will heal Smokey with his Cure Wounds ability before moving the dog near the unconscious horse.  Then, also on Miyogi's advice, Conan will make sure all the worgs nearby are well and truly dead before channeling positive energy.  Makoto will say "Well, it is my impression that they were not aware of us until they attacked.  Otherwise all of them would have attacked at once.  Also, I agree with Yin's assessment, that red worg looked draconic in nature.  I have heard tales of the Dragon King from a century ago that spawned many and varied children.  Perhaps this was a descendent of his."
With the trolls dead and everyone gathered close enough, Conan channels positive energy twice and Yin once leaving almost everyone at full health.
The elf boy can be coaxed out and he will tell you his story.  His name is Vardalel Prennder and he is an apprentice logger.  He was captured by the Worg Queen(she claims to be a descendent of the Dragon King) and her pack of worgs and trolls.  They wanted to hunt him for sport/practice, so last night they released him and then hunted him down.  They are wanted by the authorities and have a bounty on them.  Bring in proof (some body part that can distinguish them from wolves) and get 300gp per worg and each troll head will get
600gp. The troll loot bags mostly contain junk, but you can find a few things of value.

Smokey 2dam,
Yin 1dam;

7x300 + 2x600 = 3300gp
mw,Lamellar (leather) armor (large size) 390gp

Ok then let’s get moving. We can take the young man and the warg and troll heads to the next community on our way. Lords know I could use some bounty money. Nice trick with the Kaber pole.

Ragnar wonders about the troll heads. He has heard so many hearth tales of them regrowing from some body part...

He turns to his horse and tightens the girth strap.

I'm glad somebody remembered, Chp4/msg281 - just replace "In the woods" with "too far ahead".  In more open terrain you could ride ahead a little (A LITTLE) more, but you can still see farther/move quicker mounted, and the thrush would still be so much more effective with an aerial birds-eye view of things.

So the group finishes getting ready to go and moves on.  Later in the morning you see crows circling off the road and Vardalel will indicate the worgs lair is off in that direction.  The thrush will scout from the air and reports back that the injured worg is there, dead, with no sign of the Worg Queen.  Do you want to investigate and if so, who do you want to send?  It looks like rough terrain, the wagon likely can't make it.  With the worg pack around there are likely few large normal predators nearby, but the Worg Queen is still out there and Makoto doesn't want to leave the wagon and Vardalel alone.

Makoto will chat with Ragnar and tell him about her travels.  Apparently her sense of direction is so epically bad that she went on a wandering journey and ended up on the other side of the continent.  And from what you have seen, it is that bad.
So the group bypasses the worg lair and continues on.  Makoto brings up the idea of splitting loot 5 ways instead of 4.  4 shares for 1 per person plus 1 share to make/purchase group items like healing scrolls or clw wands.
By the end of the day they start seeing farms and civilization and can park in a village for the night.  This is Vardalel's home and the people are thankful for his safe return.  The local lord will pay the bounty on the worgs and trolls.  Apparently this pack has been terrorizing the area for several years.  They moved around so it was difficult to catch them.  They are disappointed that the Red Worg escaped.  They set plans in motion to track her down and end her.
Common knowledge is that Falcons Hollow is a lumber town a couple of days up river near the mountains.  It is known for producing Darkwood, a rare magic wood that is as hard as normal wood but very light (1/2 weight).
It is easy to discover that the elven caravan with a halfelf bard named Evero did not go to Falcons Hollow.  They stayed several days in town making deals and buying Darkwood and then left going north.

Questions?
- 5 way loot split?
- follow caravan or go to Falcons Hollow?
- anything else you want to do or buy in this town?

Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

So the group heads to Falcons Hollow on the river road. That night Makoto asks what you have learned about Falcons Hollow and is surprised when she finds out no one took the time or made any effort to learn about their destination beyond what is common knowledge.  So you pool what you do know.

quote:
Common knowledge is that Falcons Hollow is a lumber town a couple of days up river near the mountains.  It is known for producing Darkwood, a rare magic wood that is as hard as normal wood but very light (1/2 weight).

What you know is that the small village of Falcon’s Hollow is a wild place. Nestled in the shadow of Droskar’s Crag, the people of Falcon’s Hollow are hearty and stern. Theirs is a life of hardships, broken only occasionally by a handful of festivals and the infrequent merchant caravan.
They face constant adversity from both the wilderness and the wiles of man. Wolves nip at their heels and cutpurses ply at their pockets. It is a testament to their strength that they even manage to survive at all.
Droskar was an evil dwarven god, but you don't know if the mountain named Droskar’s Crag was named after him.  Ragnar can add that Falcons Hollow is a company town and has no local Noble ruling it.

  So you follow the road to Falcons Hollow and eventually arrive at the River Foam late in the afternoon of the 2nd day.  On this side is an Inn/Stables that looks more like a fort sitting next to a dock with a ferry at it.  On the far side of the river is a walled town.  A quick inquiry reveals the ferry charges for a 1 way trip;
Wagon        5gp
horse        3gp
visitor/pets 5sp
locals       2cp
These are outrageous prices, at least 5 times higher than what you were expecting for a simple ferry ride.  You can also discover the Inn/stables will store your wagon and horses for 2gp/day/horse, dog, man or wagon (10gp/week - paid in advance - people meals extra). The Inn/stables seem average (nothing fancy, but reasonably clean), but cost the price of a good room.

With Conan paying Makoto has no reason to object, so you load the wagon and horse onto the ferry and cross over to Falcons Hollow.
4 horse + 1 dog + 4 people (the cat and bird are small enough not to count) = 19.5gp

The flat bottomed ferry is attached to a rope that goes from 1 dock to the other dock.  There is a ferryman and 2 burly assistant who pull the boat from 1 side to to the other.  The only other person on the boat is a middle aged?(30ish) human female with a backpack, a local.  She looks your group over with furtive glances.  The ferryman puts your payment in an unlocked chest marked with a sigil of crossed axes over an "LC" and starts ordering his burly assistants to start pulling the ferry across.

The woman looks a bit apprehensive when the heavily armed and armored Ragnar approaches her, but when he is so polite, she seems to relax a little.  She seems a little dismissive of you until Yin says she's a healer, when she perks up.  She introduces herself as Deveera Gadsel, "You must be a new adventurer group.  You can't be too careful here in the Hollow" as she looks around to see where the ferryman is, he seems to be busy berating 1 of his assistants.  She continues "But we could use a healer, there is a plague going around and people are getting sick.  They say it was the water from Brookmans well and no one is allowed to drink from it until the company says its ok."
- The town has many sell-swords, mercenaries and adventurers
- Crime is rampant
- the plague has already claimed a couple of elderly folks
- most people keep to themselves and don't want to get involved

Yin will whisper to Ragnar, "I have business in the wagon, be right back."  She goes into the wagon and casts the 'Ears of the City' spell.

Ears of the city (+6 per)
1 disposition of the local leader (what people think of him)
2 criminal element feared most
3 logger rumors of the woods
4 Mysterious strangers people are talking about (we are new, so we shouldn't have anyone talking about us yet)

After about a minute in the wagon Yin will come out and subtly get everybody together away from prying ears and relate what she discovered with her spell.
quote:
Yin: Ears of the city (+6 per)
rolled good
1 disposition of the local leader (what people think of him) = Thuldrin Kreed, the Gavel (the local leader) of the Lumber Consortium.  He runs the town with an iron fist.  He is to be feared by all.  Kreed abuses this position often and publicly. He is a sadistic, cruel man and not shy of open murder or rape if someone dares to oppose him or simply is in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Ironically and contrary to this behavior, it is not unusual to see Kreed doing curative works if someone suffers without Kreed being the cause. He also spends a lot of money to protect Falcon's Hollow's lumberjacks and inhabitants from the monsters of the region.
Kreed is cruel but he is also a coward often hiding behind the back of his right hand Payden Teedum.

rolled, don't ask...
2 criminal element feared most = Redrock Guild, but the name is all you got.

rolled good
3 logger rumors of the woods = All the standard monsters, wolves, bears, giant mosquito/stirge, wyverns from the mountains (probably won't attack groups), a dragon (of some sort), a hag/witch/wise woman/practitioner of the old ways/local boogieman named Ulizmila, various fey(who are angry at the logging) and an Elder darkwood tree (the oldest of it's kind).

rolled 20
4 Mysterious strangers people are talking about (we are new, so we shouldn't have anyone talking about us yet) = you hear whispered remarks, nasty chanting in an ugly language and a Skull-decorated fly unholy symbol.  That is the symbol of Urgathoa The Pallid Princess, evil goddess of disease, gluttony and undeath.  You probably have a cult here.

Conan, says Ragnar quietly, this cult may be why your goddess
led you here. We may need to remove it or at least disrupt it as it sounds pretty evil.

To the group he will also say:  My friends, the leader of this town sounds like bad news. We may run afoul of him if he is connected to this evil cult, or even if he just decides we are a problem. Let’s keep a low profile and find out what we can ok?

He will return to chatting with the lady traveler. He will ask about the places to stay in town, where to eat, entertainment etc. just typical traveler talk.

You're probably right, Ragnar, this cult needs to be taken out and two a proper leader needs to be here.   We'll just have to take out this abusive leader,  if he gets in our way.    States Conan back to Ragnar quietly but firmly of course.   It has been my experience that the bullies of the world go looking for the trouble, but yes, let's tread lightly for now.   He continues.

Deveera Gadsel starts acting uncomfortable when Ragnar starts talking to her again, he notices the ferryman is staring at them and is close enough to hear them, She says "Jak-a'-Napes Inn is the only inn in town, next to the stables.  Now, if you will excuse me I have to check something."  She moves to the other side of the boat as the ferryman comes over to Ragnar, "If it's entertainment you be want'n.  The Sitting Duck tavern 's popula with you adventur'n types.  It b famous for darkwood leaf brew, or ifun gamblin and other, um, amusements 's what u b look'n fer, the Rouge Lady 's wat u b want'n.  Though wit those" he indicates Yin and Makoto "I suppose ta other amusements might na b n da cards, if'n ya know wat I mean."  His accent is not local, it is from far away.  And the boat docks.

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

The dock leads to a dirt street that looks well travelled by man, beast and cart.  Deveera Gadsel hurries on ahead while you unload your horses and cart.  Ahead you can see a walled part of the town set on a small hill.  The street curves around until you arrive at a market square with stalls/booths and carts.  This late in the afternoon most have closed or are getting ready to close.
Building
7  Straight ahead you can see "Jak-a'-Napes" Inn and behind it the stables.
8  To the right is a sturdy log building that says, "Hollow Tribunal".  It's sign indicates it is a Justice court/govt office for filing legal documents etc...
14 Down the street you can see a large line of people lined up in front of this building.
15 Down toward the docks this building seems to have a couple of men/guards out front, and as you watch a group of loggers seem to be taking out their daggers and putting them in a basket before going in.
16 The sign says "Goose 'n' Gander" and appears to be a general store.
As you head toward the "Jak-a'-Napes" Inn the few open stall merchants try to catch your attention to see if you want to buy their wares, but there doesn't appear to be anything you need.  You see more men with weapons than is usual for a town this size.  Most wearing a chain shirt with the sigil from before, crossed axes over an "LC".  A freckly faced ten-year-old boy missing his two front teeth and holding a piece of wood approaches the wagon and shouts to attract the ladies attention, "I got wood carvings, bring you good luck, 1 silver."  Meanwhile a beggar dressed from head to foot in rags, probably a leper, approaches Conan "Alms for the poor kind sir."

Unlike normal, I want you to keep track of how much you are spending...
Makoto will also buy a couple of carvings from the boy and that seems to be all the boy has on him, but you made him happy as he scampers off into town.  The wooden carvings are pretty good for a 10 year old boy, nothing spectacular but it does show that he has some skill at his craft.
-2sp each for Makoto and Ragnar, for 2 wooden carvings each

You arrive at the stables and find they charge 2gp/day/medium or large sized beast or wagon.  No discount for how long you stay.
please state/post how long you are going to pay for the 4 horses and 1 wagon?

The Jak-a'-Napes is a ramshackle inn, but inside is as clean as can be expected.  As you enter there is a handsome human male plucking a harp and singing a tune to a table of loggers, a rousing bawdy tune.  His skill is undeniably better than Yin, much better.  There isn't anyone else in the room at the moment.  The loggers are eating flapjacks.  When he is done he greets you as Jak and has 2 rooms available for 1 gp/night and he apologizes for the high price, "It costs a bit to operate in this town."  The rooms can be locked only from the inside.
-5sp/person/night, how many nights do you want to pay for?
Jak seems like the 1st friendly person you have met so far.  He wears a chain shirt, rapier and dagger and seems comfortable doing so.  It is obvious from his habits that he is a man who has seen combat, a lot of combat.

Yin will request a discount because she is a healer and blessed of Sarenrae.  She will also ask for a private dinner to ask questions.  She will pay for 2 days initially (Inn room and stables).  She will ask Conan to "Detect Inner Beauty".
- Jak is good.

He will give you 1/2 price if Yin will treat a couple of his friends.  He will warn her and Makoto about running around town with their WOW (chr/beauty)factors hanging out.  They are pretty ladies and might want to hide their loveliness.

Yin comes down to the private dinner in heavily patched workers clothes and Makoto will wear a full cowl to hide her distinctive features.

Private Dinner
Yin will also ask about the lines at the dock and up the street and is it payday.

quote:
14 Down the street you can see a large line of people lined up in front of this building.

Is people seeking treatment for the plague from Roots and Remedies, a shop run by the local midwife and healer.
quote:
15 Down toward the docks this building seems to have a couple of men/guards out front, and as you watch a group of loggers seem to be taking out their daggers and putting them in a basket before going in.

That is The Rouge Lady, a gambling hall and brothel.  While technically illegal, the brothel is an open secret.  Pay day's are staggered for the various camps.  Since the Lumber consortium doesn't want to overwhelm the towns resources.

Yin will reveal there is a cult of the Pallid Goddess in town.
He is surprised by this revelation.  While it is bad and people go missing all the time, usually the wilderness or criminals are to blame.

Yin will ask for information on the plauge and stuff.
The plague was traced to Brookman's well and that seems to be all he knows.  If you want details you need to talk to either the clerics of Imodae or the local midwife/healer at Roots and Remedies.

If so he will ask: where is Brookmans well? Just north of town, but it has been closed on the Sheriff's orders.  It is guarded to make sure no one uses it until the crisis is finished.

How many lumber camps are there? 3 main camps

Is the local law just or rigged for the company? The new Sheriff is willing to stand up to Thuldrin Kreed, but the magistrate/judge is bought and paid for by Kreed, "It's not called the Hollow Tribunal for nothing."

After dinner Conan and the ladies will head to see a healer while Ragnar stays in the common room to observe the atmosphere of the place.

I am not going to pm much, but I am relying on you to keep out-of-character knowledge separate from IN-character knowledge.
DO NOT USE ANYTHING OoC to make any decisions.

Ragnar
Since you did not specify, I will roll randomly
Hangs out at Jak-a'-Napes for a bit before heading out.  Jak's is pretty quite and you get the impression the plague is keeping people away.  The customers are a mix of local townsfolk and out-of-towners like you.  There are a few loggers, but no guards or mercenaries.  The atmosphere is pleasant and family friendly.  Just before you leave, Deveera Gadsel comes in with the freckly faced ten-year-old boy you bought the figures from.  They don't appear to notice you.
After leaving you randomly decide to go to the Sitting Duck.  You pass by Roots and Remedies where Conan and the ladies are supposedly chatting with a healer.  Arriving at the Sitting Duck you quickly see the tavern stands close to the town's palisade/wall and you see evidence of monster attacks.  The Sitting Duck is not a family friendly place, it is loud and raucous with lots of drinking going on.  The customers are mostly off duty guards (with the Lumber Consortiums sigil), mercenaries/adventurers and loggers.  Currently a drunk logger and a guard are at a large sturdy table and most of the customers are gathered around them placing bets.  You think they might be starting a bloodsport known as Knivesies.  Currently the betting is being over seen by a brawny human male wearing an Aldori sword.  By his demeanor you assume he is in charge.  A pretty barmaid comes over, "I haven't seen you before, new in town?  What can I get you?"

quote:
The game is comprised of two contestants who usually check their weapons and remove any armor. They stand on opposite ends of a long, sturdy table, their right hands are bound together, and each has an empty belt pouch tied to their sides. A single dagger is stuck in the table between them.

Spectators place bets on who will win, and the wagers are piled around the dagger. The bettors then stand at the end of the table near their chosen winner.

Play starts at the count of 10. The game ends as soon as any of the following happen:
-One contestant is knocked out, dead, or knocked off the table.
-Any coin is knocked off the table.
-All of the coins have been snatched up by the players.
An unconscious, dead, or de-tabled contestant automatically loses. Otherwise, the contestant who pouches the most coins wins.
Post-game
All of the coins are piled back onto the table, with the winner keeping half and the rest split between the winning bettors. Beyond that, anything goes. The initial move is usually a lunge for the dagger, forcing the other player to grab for coins; most games then devolve into a bloody brawl.

...head out to visit Roots and Remedies, home to the local midwife and healer.  Creeping ivy and full window boxes cover the façade of the rugged-looking, two-story shop bearing the faded sign “Roots and Remedies.” A line of 5 somber townsfolk—some with pale, wheezing children, others seeming to be precipitously near tears—stretches from the open door.  As you watch a woman with a baby comes out of the store and then next person in line goes in.  You seem to be last in line, but it shouldn't take too long.  Yin and Makoto converse quietly in celestial, comparing notes on the symptoms they see.
Shortly it is your turn.  The smell of burnt earth and spicy incense chokes the air of the cramped, mud-tracked shop. Bunches of dried herbs hang from the ceiling, along with dangling pots, presses, alchemical apparatuses, and glassware of more arcane purposes. Pouches of rare plants, jars of colored glass, and all manner of dried, preserved, and jellied animal parts fill high shelves and tables doing double duty as displays and workspaces. In the shop’s rear, a rail-thin girl with severe-looking spectacles and hair pulled back tightly busies herself between an overpacked rack of herbs, a table covered in stray powders and measuring equipment, and a pot loudly bubbling over with thick gray froth. Over the din of her work and without looking up, the woman tiredly says, “And what’s your problem?”  She looks up and sees a heavily armed Conan and looks scared "Are you here to rob me?"  The girl looks 15 or 16 at most.

The girl brings Ragnar his beer and to his question, "That's the owner, Ergin Tock."  She notices your sword but doesn't say anything.  Around the Knivesies table the people who are betting finish placing their wagers and then stand at the end of the table behind their chosen man.  The loggers have bet on the logger and the guards on the guard.  The mercenaries who are betting seem to favor the guard.  The guard has 8 bettors while the logger only has 5.
Ergin Tock is the referee in the middle and he starts to count from 10..and the crowd chants with him.  10, 9, 8...2, 1 and the guard manages to grab the dagger 1st, so the drunk logger grabs some coins (provoke an AOO and gets hit) and stuffs them in his pouch.  The guard stabs the logger who somehow manages to avoid the worst of the blow and stay on the table.  In his drunken state the logger doesn't seem to recognize his peril and continues to grab some coins, again provoking an aoo, which hits and the logger goes down, bleeding.  Ergin points to the guard, "Winner" and immediately goes to the bleeding logger and takes the pouch with the money off him before he lets the mans comrades care for him.  Then while the other loggers gather around their friend, Ergin divides the pot between the winners.  Apparently the house is considered a winning bettor and gets a share + any amount that can't be divided equally.  The loggers apparently manage to stop the bleeding and 2 gather up their things and take him outside, 1 on each side.  No one pays them any attention.

Take 10 = 20 + help(+2 from Conan, +2 from Makoto)

At that moment 2 loggers enter carrying an unconscious man man between them, 1 under each shoulder.  That man has bandages around is gut with blood on them.  One of the loggers says "5 gold for a patch job, right.  Otherwise the foreman is gonna knock his teeth out for missing work."  They are acting like this is a regular occasion.  The girl looks distressed, looks upstairs and mutters "I forgot it was payday, stupid Knivesies".  she starts to get up and then grabs onto the table as she has trouble standing from tiredness.

Take 10 = 20 + help(+2 from Conan, +2 from Makoto)
You can tell the girl is really tired and you wonder how long she has been awake.  She says automatically "My "Mother" (her superior/teacher in the church) is current unavailable" as if she has been saying that all day.  She looks at you, looks at the shrine, puts her head in hands and sighs under her breath "Mother please help me, what should I do?"

Ragnar
Ergin Tock looks at you with disinterest "I'm busy, why don't you buy Jalene a drink.  I'm sure she can tell you anything you want to know.  Jalene.." and as the pretty barmaid from before arrives, "...this man is new in town and has some question.  Help him out with that.  He said he would buy you a drink, but nothing fancy mind you. "  If you let her, she will escort you to a table in the corner, "This is the bosses table, but he won't mind if we use it for a bit.  So what do you want to get me?"  With your knowledge and rogue levels she is asking how much you are going to pay for this information?  This is probably the routine here, information is a commodity after all.  You are still in public, but private enough that your questions will likely not be overheard.

How much do you want to spend and what are your questions?

Since Conan was talking with the girl and looking her way he'll notice her near exhaustion and collapse and rush over to her.   She'll be amazed at how gentle he is handling her in picking her up as it were, most guys would go for the easy touches of the breasts etc. but not him.   he will pick her up gently and promptly put her in the nearest chair.
My angle as you put it, is to help and to possibly stay so that my Goddess, Maple can have pretty things made.    You see, I am on a quest for Maple to seek out the Mother Cleric of Falcons Hollow.   States Conan in reply to the midwife's questions.   I'm a blacksmith by profession.   I mentioned my quest in acknowledgement of your holy symbol to the Mother.    He continues respectfully.    After looking after the girl, Conan will see how the others, Yin and Makoto, are doing with the logger and his friends.

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

Ragnar will go with the young lady to the corner table.

Please, order yourself a drink on me. Just not the best elven wine ok?

He says the last part with a chuckle.

So your boss is quite the guy. Have you ever seen him use that dueling sword? I imaging he is a pretty tough guy running a place like this in the wilds. Ok, what can you tell me about the plague? The law around here? The leader of the town sounds like he is fun...

While Ragnar waits for whatever information he can get from her, he will keep his eyes roving over the room, and his ears open for anything interesting to overhear.

In a quiet voice: look, there is apparently an evil cult operating around here. They may be the cause of the plague. Do you know anything at all?

Ragnar will slip 5 gold out of his pouch and palm it to her as they talk.

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

Conan, Yin and Makoto
While Conan helps the girl, Yin will go help the loggers and cast Stabilize.  Then she will examine the wound had cast a healing spell (clw).  The man wakes up, still drunk but conscious.  His friends hand over 5 gp and then escort him out "I told you not to have the darkwood leaf stuff.  We better just take him back to the bunk house to sleep this off, no telling what he might do in this condition."
Meanwhile Conan carefully helps the girl to a chair.  She thanks you and after the men have left and the door has been locked she confesses that her "Mother" has fallen ill with this disease and is currently unconscious.  She finally tells you her name is Eloise.  Her Mother had figured out what was causing the disease and had met with the Sheriff to stop the spread, but was working on a cure when she fell ill.
Upstairs you find a older woman lying in bed.  Yin tries Lesser Restoration, and while that buys you some more time it doesn't wake her up.  Eloise will show you her Mothers notes.  You go over them and discover it is a a fungal disease called blackscour taint.  While the malady is not exceptionally deadly, poor conditions and a general lack of supplies mean that many of the sick—especially the elderly and young—face mortal consequences. Slowly
deteriorating, most of the afflicted can hang on for several more days, but already the weakest have succumbed, with their number growing daily.
What you can learn from the notes;
Blackscour taint is an ingested disease with an incubation period of 3 days. The
disease deals Constitution damage and is resisted with a DC 14 Fortitude save. Those who are infected develop a hacking cough that quickly turns bloody if the disease is allowed to progress.  However, the notes indicate that it has been magically enhanced, probably by the fey (is the supposition).
What is blackscour? “Just a fungus that’s not good for anything. Hard, bitter, and sharp, it likes the water and gets you sick if you drink it down. Never heard of it growing around these parts, though, until now.”
What is blackscour taint? “It’s a sickness, almost like any other, but you get the  mold growing in you. It starts eating away in your chest and belly and is damned determined to stay. Your body near turns itself inside-out trying to hack the stuff up, but all that does is cuts your guts up… bad.”
How many townsfolk have blackscour taint? “More than thirty, honestly not really sure, though at least three times that thinks they’ve got it.”
Is there any cure? “Not around here. I’ll get these folks what I can and we’ll see what good it does.”
There’s another medicine? “My grandmother’s book has a brew in it that says its good for this kind of thing. A weird concoction that sounds more like hoojoo than real medicine.”
What’s in this medicine? “Some rare roots and concentrations, most of which I have here, but there’s three I don’t. Elderwood moss, which I’ve never heard of, but granny says the stuff only grows on the oldest tree in a forest. A specially pickled root called rat’s tail, again, sounds like hoojoo to me. And seven ironbloom mushrooms, stunty little things that only grow in dark places thick with metal, a favorite among dwarves, or so I hear.”
Do you know where we could find these ingredients? “Well, for the elderwood mold, there’s gotta be an oldest tree in the vale.  Damned if I know where it is, though.  “The rat’s tail and mushrooms are even longer shots. Way north, toward the mountains, people say there used to live a bunch of dwarves. They’re not there anymore, but I’d bet their forges are. If you can find ironbloom anywhere around here, that’d be your best bet.  “As for the rat’s tail, who knows? Well.  Actually. Ulizmila, the witch that lives deep in the woods might. She’s a crafty, mean thing that knows all sorts of strangeness.  She might even have one. I don’t know what she might want for it, but I doubt it’d come cheap. My grandmother traded her sight to the old crone for a few pages of what she knew, and that was years and years back, and I don’t know a soul who got any nicer as they got older.”
How much time do we have to get the ingredients? “None! Folks are dying every day!  All we can hope to do now is treat who we can and hope to save the gravedigger some work.

Ragnar
- Yes, he knows how to use his sword and is tough.  Wild beasts sometimes attack the town, usually at night.  And since we are next to the entrance they generally attack us first.  Of course most of are customers are armed warriors and they generally kill or drive off whatever is attacking.
Are you any good with yours?  (But which "sword" is she talking about- nudge, wink)
- The plague apparently came from tainted water at Brookman's Well, the Sheriff and the Company have declared it off limits for now.
- The Law, well if you keep to yourself and don't cause trouble it won't trouble you.
What kind of trouble are you thinking of starting? (nudge-wink, I think she's flirting with you)
- Kreed, well he has a tough job keeping so many people safe from so many threats.  It's no wonder he has to make the hard choices.  Of course those that don't like to make the hard choices can sit back and complain because he keeps them safe.  I've never seen him do those things he is said to have done, but then I'm just a barmaid in a $#@% town.
Up until this point she has been professional and calm, but the comment about an evil cult seems to cause her composure to slip and she says quietly, "Are you sure?  How do you know?"  She seems worried.
- she doesn't know much about magic, cultist and the like.  But she does know there is a Leper colony at the Abandoned Cutyard half a mile west of the town.  They come into town and beg.  The new church (of Iomedae) tends to keep to itself and only came to town a couple of years ago, do you think they might be the cult pretending?

Use Channel and Lesser Rest. to heal both Mother and Eloise (CPE for hp, LR for fatigue).
After reading the notes and realizing you need to go get 3 exotic ingredients, Yin will go consult with Jak and tell him about the situation.  She will use her last 2 Lesser rest's to help his sickest 2 friends and ask his advice on the situation.  Yin wants the group to head out tomorrow to try to track down
- Elderwood moss on the oldest trees in the deepest part of the forest
- seven ironbloom mushrooms in some dwarven ruins near Droskars Crag
- A specially pickled root called rat’s tail from Ulizmila, the witch/hag?
If they don't return in a few days, perhaps Jak can get a group together and try to find them.  She will also try using Ears of the city again but with Jak's Inspire Competence and maybe a cleric to use guidance every round.
Does anybody have suggestions on what to Gather Information on?
Any other resources to improve Yin's perception?

Also, tonight she wants to visit the Church of Iomedae with Conan.  Conan can identify good people so they will know who they can trust.

DM edit
Both Inspire Competence and guidance are the same bonus type and don't stack.

Jak can't help with the locations, but he can direct you to see a logger named Milon Rhoddam who is supposed to be the most experienced woodsmen in the region that is normally available.

Ragnar
  The 2 of you chat and flirt around, but eventually she has to go back to work.  You realize you have told her quite a bit about yourself, probably more than you should have.  She is skilled at guiding the conversation and getting you to talk about yourself.  But her reaction to the evil cult news seemed genuine, that was news to her.  You will learn;
- The perch is where the rich people live, and is always guarded and you must have permission to go there
- Sharvaros Vade: This odd hermit (said to be a mighty wizard) and his son are seen around the graveyard at odd hours.  He is bony thin and looks like a skeleton with skin.
- Quinn’s Carnival of Wonders: Namdrin Quinn and his companions wow crowds with feats of skill and magic by night, but rumor has it that after the tents close Namdrin and his merry band entreat with dark fey, whose anger mounts at the constant lumbering incursions into the vale. Some say he spies for the vengeful fey, who plan retribution and murder.  He is mysterious and not much is known about him.  They have been in town for only a few years and can't be bringing in that much gold.  He must be independently wealthy and yet the local criminals have not managed to steal it, or maybe no one has tried.

After she goes back to work, what does Ragnar do?

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

Yin and Conan
Yin will ask Conan to accompany her to the Church of Iomedae while while Makoto and Jak go to see the Sheriff.  If she can see someone and if Conan can see their inner beauty (detect as good), Yin will inform them of the Plague and about the Urgathoan Cult.  She will tell them of the groups plan to search for the ingredients and about trying Ears of the City again tonight.  She will inform them that Jak knows and the Sheriff is being informed as we speak.
Does the cleric have any suggestions for spells to improve perception?
Any suggestion on what to look for with the EotC spell?
What does she know about the cult of the Pallid Princess (Urgathoa)?
Could the Church send someone around on Payday to heal those injured?

Yin's skill and chr will get them in to see the the head priest of the church easily enough.  You find yourself in the office of Lady Cirthana Gensar (who is good), an older lady of noble bearing.  Her title would indicate she is of noble birth (probably a 3rd or 4th daughter with few marriage prospects).  She will listen intently to Yin's story of an Urgathoan Cult in the town and about the Mothers clerics plague cure.  She will ask several questions and reveal that she had noticed her own Remove Disease spells were less effective than normal.
Lady Cirthana Gensar will send someone to help Eloise in the morning.  She will have to decline sending clerics around on Payday.  Would-be paladins and up-and-coming clerics find themselves extremely unprepared for the challenges of Falcon's Hollow, and most end up being pawns of the Lumber Consortium, lured from their faith by bribes and tales of a better life, whether in the form of gold or free passes to the Rouge Lady.  Yin will comment "Iron cannot be turned into steel until it passes through the flame, as my brother would say.".  Lady Gensar approves of both Jak and the Sheriff, they both oppose the excesses of the Lumber Consortium and Kreed.  Jak is sort of a friendly enemy/rival.
Her advice for Yin's Ears of the City spell is focus on the Abandoned cut yard which is now a leper colony.  The recent outbreak of leprosy has driven many of the infected to the Abandoned Cutyard. The poor people have formed a colony of tents and shacks. The rotting buildings of the yard match the ravaged faces of the sick and dying. Lady Cirthana Gensar sent acolytes to aid the lepers but they never returned.
- Yin and Conan also notice there is an orphange in the church.
- She will give Yin an Owls Wisdom spell for her Ears of the City spell.
- The problem with most spells that give a bonus to skills or perception, they are usually the same type and don't stack.

Makoto and Jak will inform the Sheriff of the evil cult in the city and tell him to contact Jak or the Church of Imodae.

By the time Makot, Conan and Yin return from their visits, Ragnar is back and everyone catches up.

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

4 questions using owls wisdom(+2) and Jaks Inspire Comp(+2) = +10
Whats going on in the Abandoned Cutyard
The Abandoned Cutyard of Falcon's Hollow was the town's first lumber mill; the mill and its surrounding log cabins lie abandoned half a mile west of the town. Some old people say that the cutyard was not abandoned because of the construction of the new Cutyard but because of a terrifying event that happened many years ago during a midnight shift. The legend says that blood-curdling screams were heard from the old mill and when Thuldrin Kreed and his people went to investigate, they found no sign of the workers. Thuldrin himself returned pale as snow and trembling. Some say that Thuldrin's father told his son the secret of what evil sleeps in the old cutyard but Thuldrin has never told that to even his most trusted thugs.

Whats going on in the Carvnival
  Carnival stuff.

What about Vade
Vade is a wizard who has a young son, but lost his wife several years ago, when their son was about a year old.  After this he became a lackey of Kreed, though recently they have had a falling out for some reason.  He used to live in a tower up in the Perch, but now lives in a shack on the edge of town near the cemetery.  You hear whispers that he and his son have been seen prowling around the cemetery late at night.

Beggars in town
One of the beggars seems to be a person who was or looks like a paladin of Imodae that ran away.  You see the face of another leprous beggar that seems to have the skin flayed off, but not from Leprosy.  You hear someone mention how their dog doesn't like that beggar.  You also find out that sometimes people will observe some of the beggars (they all look alike or most people don't really look at them to identify individuals), moving like normal and not like someone seriously sick on the verge of death.

The next morning you get up bright and early and head out to the Lumber Consortium Camp
where Milon Rhoddam (the most experienced woodsmen in the region that is normally available) works.  According to Jak, Milon works at the middle camp about 12 miles away (1.5 hrs on horse or 2 hrs on foot).  From there you will be going into the woods.  Do you want to;
1- ride your horses all during the trip.
2- walk during the whole trip.
3- other ideas.

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

Makoto agrees with Yin and Ragnar, walking is fine.  She will suggest you pay for a week or more of horse/cart lodging.

The trip to Lumber Consortium Camp is along a road rutted by much heavy traffic.  Close to town there are a few small heavily fortified farmsteads.  About 1/3rd of them appear empty or destroyed.  The land eventually becomes an ugly scar of stumps of what was a dense stand of proud darkwood trees. Eventually you arrive at the camp.  It has five sturdy-looking log buildings—seemingly a bunkhouse, meal hall, office, barn, and smithy—stand with numerous wide carts and sleds amid the sawdust-covered clearing.  Loggers, horses and guards are working at various jobs.  With Yin's silver tongue she easily convinces the guards to let you see the camp foreman.
The camp foreman, Jarlben Trookshavits, is in his filthy office, thickly decorated with taxidermies of fierce forest animals. With the groups skill in diplomacy you convince the impatient foreman to send for Rhoddam.  It turns out his nephew is 1 of the sick people in town so he is willing to draw you a map, and when Yin flashes 10gp to both Rhoddam and the foreman to let him guide you for a few days, they both agree.
So after Milon Rhoddam gets ready you head into the forest.  He will estimate that it should take another 2.5 days to visit the 3 locations and make it back to Falcons Hollow.  Milon is a blunt, quiet man, is one of the most experienced wanderers and woodsmen in the region.  He quickly proves that his woodcraft/survival is equal or slightly better than either Makoto or Conan.

As the group travels along the road, and then into the forest, Ragnar will generally be quiet and will keep his eyes out for trouble. Once they are in the shadows of the forest he will walk in stealth just behind the ladies, about 10 to 20 feet back depending on visibility.

Question: was there any evidence of efforts to replant the trees that had been felled?

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

No, there is no effort at replanting at all.

Stealth requires concealment and sometimes in the woods the only concealment is also difficult terrain, which even with Rapid Sneak makes it impossible to keep up with the party on the trail.  Ragnar will try to use stealth as much as possible, but it isn't always possible to use it and keep up.

I forgot to mention, Makoto now has a giant raven animal companion.  She wants to train it so Chito her cat can use it as a mount.

giant raven:
Starting Statistics: Size Small; Speed 20 ft., fly 50 ft.; Attack bite (1d4); Ability Scores Str 8, Dex 13, Con 10, Int 2, Wis 15, Cha 7; Special Qualities low-light vision, scavenger.
Scavenger (Ex) Giant ravens are hardy birds that often feed on carrion or even undead flesh. As a direct result of this unusual dietary habit, they gain a +4 bonus on saves to resist ingested diseases.

I am assuming ;
Milon, Conan in front
Ladies with Smokey, Chito in the middle
Ragnar in the back
Thrush and Raven flying around

Along the way Miyogi reports that he has found a shiny arrow in a tree.  It turns out to be a +2 shocking adamantine arrow, forgotten after a frantic battle fought here who knows how long ago.  You see various signs of critters and monsters, but you have no encounters...yet.

previous post:
logger rumors of the woods = All the standard monsters, wolves, bears, giant mosquito/stirge, wyverns from the mountains (probably won't attack groups), a dragon (of some sort), a hag/witch/wise woman/practitioner of the old ways/local boogieman named Ulizmila, various fey(who are angry at the logging) and an Elder darkwood tree (the oldest of it's kind).

Milon will confirm all these rumors and add;
- He has never seen the dragon, but he has seen tracks of a large sized serpentine reptile.
Makoto suggests possibly a Tatzlwyrm
- the hag is reclusive, so this may mean nothing, but she hasn't been encountered in a few years.  Her reputation has existed for 100+ years.
- Wyverns won't attack large groups and are not much of a problem in the woods (they are not good fliers).

Yin Suggests
For camping, use a buddy system at all times.  For a watch schedule,
1st Yin/Ragnar
2nd Conan and Smokey
3rd Makoto/Chito/Milon
Yin and Makoto have a tent for privacy.

Shortly after everyone except Yin and Ragnar are asleep, Ragnar notices a cat sized giant mosquito on the gt raven and 1 on Conan, sucking his blood.  What do Ragnar and Yin do?

During the 1st day Conan will try to chat with Milon whenever the group takes a break to eat/drink/rest.  But the 2 have alot in common, so slowly they begin chatting about woodcraft, being a ranger, etc...
- He loves his nephew who is sick and is glad you are helping
- most of the Tatzlwyrm tracks have been on the other side of the lake/river, the area where you are going
- you should be at the Elder Tree by mid-day and Ulizmila Hut late in the afternoon/early evening

Ragnar quickly moves and cuts down the giant mosquito on Conan, then notices the one attached to Makoto's Giant Raven.  Yin takes care of that one with magic missile.  Both Conan and the Raven suffer 1 con damage which Yin can fix with Lesser Restoration.  The general opinion of the experts (those with know Nature) are that unlike their normal cousins, giant mosquitos don't travel in swarms.  So you aren't going to see that many in 1 area.
The rest of the night passes and the next morning the group is ready to go.  Sometime in the morning as the group is going along a game trail, the sounds of singing begins to drift trough the woods.  From up front Milon, Miyogi and the Giant Raven start moving forward.
What do you do?

Round 1
The group starts moving forward through the woods.  Yin (casts Mage Armor), Makoto, Conan and Smokey all seem fine, but Ragnar finds the song becomes so captivating, he wants to find the singer and just listen. Ragnar fails will save  So Miyogi, Giant Raven, Milon and Ragnar are enchanted by the song and just keep moving forward.

Yin yells "Conan try to stop Ragnar, he's enchanted and I have to touch him to cast protection from evil."  Makoto says, "No just keep moving, he is moving where we want to go anyway, let's see what the situation is when we get there first."

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

aFate:

Round 2
What do Conan, Yin and Makoto do?

Conan will hold up a minute contemplating what to do and will continue moving forward just like Ragnar and the rest, in other words, he is going to act like he is entranced as well.   When we reach the singing, I will try to tweak the singing by using Songbird, to break the concentration of both Humans (if possible).

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

No Guidance must be used by itself to give a person a +1, it has range touch.

Round 2-5
The group starts moving forward down the trail and through the woods.  The birds, Miyogi and the Giant Raven, are in the lead, with Conan/Milon/Smokey in next, then Makoto and finally Yin/Ragnar.  Yin (Mage Armor), Makoto, Conan and Smokey all seem fine, but Ragnar finds the song becomes so captivating, he wants to find the singer and just listen. Ragnar fails will save  So Miyogi, Giant Raven, Milon and Ragnar are enchanted by the song and just keep moving forward.
It takes a few rounds to get to the source of the singing.  Conan sees 60' away a group of loggers at a tree next to the trail.  In the tree the singing is coming from a creature that resembles a feral woman with tattered wings and taloned feet, a harpy, 20' up in the tree.  They are sentient, evil, enjoy eating other sentients and have a magical song.  The tree limbs are full of birds and squirrels, Miyogi and the Giant Raven are among them.
3 men are on the ground looking up, 1 man is climbing the tree trying to get as close to the harpy as possible.  Starting to climb the tree is a wolverine.  The harpy is watching the wolverine and climbing man with sadistic glee.

Round 6
Miyogi/Giant Raven are in the tree with the harpy
Milon continues forward and is now also at the base of the tree with the 3 men
Conan/Smokey moves to 30' from the tree and starts singing/activates his songbird ability.  His singing clashes horribly with the singing from the harpy, but does not have any immediate effect.
Makoto 50' from the tree, she will cast protection from evil on Ragnar as he goes by
Ragnar 40' from tree(protection from Evil).  As Ragnar goes by Makoto he gets a protection from evil spell, and as he gets close to Conan and his music, the clash between the songs gives him a further +1 to save.  Ragnar gets another will save, dc 16 at +3 bonus to his normal will save (+2 PfE and +1 Conan's singing)
Yin 45' from tree

As you watch the man continues to climb and the wolverine starts climbing up after him.  The wolverine is climbing much faster than the man and swiftly overtakes him and starts to climb on the man, leaving bloody claw marks on the mans legs.  Somehow the man retains his grip on the tree, but is taking damage from the wolverine.  The harpy giggles in delight and casually grabs a bird sitting right next to Miyogi and twists it's head off.

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

As the harpy falls, Conan rushes to aid the fallen logger.  The loggers and animals all come out of their song induced enchantment.  The fallen logger has suffered bumps and bruises but isn't mortally wounded.  Loggers are pretty tough folks.  1 channel is enough to heal both Conan and the loggers.  Ragnar rushs to make sure the harpy is dead.
The loggers were out scouting for good timber stands when they were attracted to the singing.  They are thankful that you showed up when you did, otherwise they could have been just another of the men that went missing in the Darkmoon Vale.
The harpy is dead.  Besides some smelly armor and some poorly maintained weapons, the harpy has a gold ring on a leather loop around her neck.  This gold ring is misshapen and looks like it might be uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time; inscribed on it is a crude symbol of a fire burning under an arch.  It can be identified as a Droskar's Guiding Ring.
Droskar's Guiding Ring:
This gold ring is misshapen and uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time; inscribed on it is a crude symbol of a fire burning under an arch. Once per day, the wearer may use charm person. If Droskar is the wearer’s patron deity, any time the wearer crafts a magic item, she may choose to pay half of the item’s construction cost instead of the full cost. The wearer spends time working on the item normally, but at the time of completion there is a 50% chance that the item turns out nonmagical and worthless. For example, if creating a magic bracer that normally costs 1,000 gp to craft, the wearer may craft it for only 500 gp, but there is a 50% chance the wearer’s shortcuts and cheap materials result in a valueless, nonfunctional item.

The loggers thank you and continue with their business as do you.  Milon leads you to a river with a place to ford it and eventually to the Elder tree itself.  He will tell you it's by far the tallest and oldest tree in the Vale.  If you are going to find Elderwood moss, that is where you will find it.  On this side of the river you do find tracks of a large-sized snake-like creature, almost certainly a Tazelwyrm.  Any particular plans on how you want to approach the tree?

Yin will help with the healing, to the loggers she says "You all must be living a good life to be given a 2nd chance like this.  Yours must be a life the Gods have decided are worth saving.  We will going further into the woods and need all the blessings we can get.  Will each of you take this silver piece and put it in the poor box at the church of Imodae for me, thanks."  She is trying to convince them that they should be living a good life.
About the ring, she chuckles and reveals 1 leg in a sexy pose "A ring of charming, I don't need that"

Before they go to the tree she will stop and say a prayer to the forest/tree spirits to thank them for the Eldermoss to help the people with.  She thinks Makoto can use levitate to help someone climb the tree to look for any Eldermoss while everyone else stands by with missle weapond ready.

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

Conan, none of the loggers are good.  When they are admonished to replant trees their general reaction is meh.  While they will agree it might be a good idea, particularly the part about appeasing the fey, it is not really their job or within their capabilities/skills/price range.

The dense trees and thick brush of the forest give way, parting seemingly in respect for the titanic darkwood tree that dominates this clearing. Several times taller than a temple minaret, in one direction the obviously ancient tree reaches into the sky with branches like a giant’s arms, while in the other it plumbs the earth with roots thicker than a man’s waist.  Its limbs broad and strong, its bark thick and so richly colored as to almost be black, and its leaves the size of bucklers, the giant thing is less a tree and more a cathedral of boughs and branches.
This elder darkwood tree is the most ancient of its kind in Darkmoon Vale.  The clearing is roughly ovular, 180 feet from north to south and 110 feet from west to east. The elder darkwood has a trunk 30 feet in diameter, with low, easy to climb branches  that extend 35 feet from the trunk in every direction.  The tree’s extends nearly 300-foot into the air, towering over it's lesser cousins.
As she enters the clearing Yin says a prayer to the forest/tree spirits to thank them for the Eldermoss to help the people with. There is no sign of Elderwood moss at the base.  So Ragnar starts climbing while the Giant raven flies above him and the thrush scouts around the outside of the tree.  Makoto will tell you what to look for and that if she sees you falling she will use a feather fall spell to let you land gently.  Yin and Conan (bow out) keep an eye out both up in the tree and around the clearing.  So Ragnar starts climbing.  He climbs for a couple of round and gets to 45' up when Miyogi comes frantically flying down.  He says fearfully, "There's a dragon up there, and it's coming down!"

What do you do?
Milon is hiding in the bushes at the edge of the clearing.
Conan(bow), Smokey, Makoto and Yin are all on the ground.
Miyogi is flying down 30' high, 20' away from the trunk.
Ragnar is climbing 45' high.
Giant Raven is 10' above Ragnar.

From behind the tree trunk slithers a serpentine creature that has a snake-like body, the head of a ferocious dragon and two relatively small forearms that end in relatively small claws.  It speaks with an intelligence that you would not expect from such a bestial appearance, in it's mystical booming voice it says, "The woods have had enough of the plague called man, you end here."  The Tatzlwyrm is still 15' from the ground when it stops and spews forth a 15' cone/cloud of goo that covers Ragnar and most of Conan.  While the goo doesn't hurt when it hits their bodies, when it contacts their weapons it seems to harden into thousands of small thorns for just an instant.  After it has caused damage it goes back to being goo.  Ragnar will choose to hold on to his weapon and take the damage.

WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY?
Yin will use lifelink on Makoto.
Makoto will ready an action

Hurt, the Twrym moves up into the tree hiding behind the broad and strong branches.  It is surprisingly stealthy for a large creature.  It drops down and attacks Makoto from above, hitting with it's bite, grabbing her in it's mouth and raking her with both claws.  Makoto is seriously hurt.  In response Conan(hit), Smokey(miss) and Ragnar (hit with flanking) attack, and do more damage.  Makoto tries to escape the grapple, but fails.  Yin will use Magic Missile, dealing more damage.
The Twyrm will drop Makoto, and uses it's 15' cone/cloud of goo on Ragnar and Conan, this time dealing 8 damage.  They both choose to hold on to their weapons.  The Twyrm then tries to move back into the tree, provoking an AOO from Conan and large size Smokey.  Smokey bites it as Conan chops it's head off.
Yin 15' drops the lifelinks with Ragnar and Conan and channels for 10 healing.

Conan will use his last channel healing 4 dam, Yin uses 2 clw spells (1 on each), topping Makoto off with 1 charge from a CLW wand.  Yin ends with 2 damage.

Up in the tree you find the mushrooms you are looking for as well as the bodies of three hunters who went missing from Falcon’s Hollow months ago, killed by the tatzlwrym when they happened upon the grove.  Although the bodies have been stripped of nearly all their flesh, the woodsmen’s equipment still dangles from their half-devoured carcasses.
I will list the loot later in the loot thread.

So having recovered the 1st ingredient for the cure (Elderwood moss), the party sets off toward the Hag's hut.  Before leaving Yin will offer a libation offering and prayer to the forest's spirit, "Sorry, but you gave us no choice,  please give us more time to correct the wrongs done to you."  She will also gather any seeds from the elder tree as well.
You arrive near the hut in the early evening.  You are a couple hundred feet away from the clearing.  Yin will lifelink Conan, Ragnar and Makoto.
How would you like to approach this encounter?

Before leaving the Elder tree Yin wants to sing, with Conan's help (aid another, celestial music ability, etc...), a song to sooth/calm the forest spirit.

We don't want to surprise her.  It could be just an old woman and NOT a hag.  So say "Hello" from the edge of the clearing.

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

Tree
Yin will have everyone help, or try to help.  Ragnar tries but has no musical talent and stops.  Makoto tries but her musical sense is completely different so she stops.  Only Conan, his songbird ability and Miyogi are of help.  It is a beautiful song that has Makoto in tears.  What effect it had if any is hard to say.  But it was truly a lovely performance.
Both Makoto and Ragnar failed at Aid Another

Hut
So it is decided to just openly approach the hut and yell ahead to see if anyone is home.  Ragnar will search for traps on the way in.
The sounds of the forest become suddenly distant as the trees part, opening into a small, almost perfectly circular glade. The nearest stands of pine, eyln, and darkwood—all typically sturdy woods—twist away from the clearing, as if bent by some impossibly strong wind or seemingly in an attempt to flee despite their paralyzed roots. At the glade’s center squats an ugly cottage, little more than a pile of twigs, shoots, and ivy stacked upon mud walls. From the thatched roof dangle bundles of gnarled roots, old dried beast carcasses, and knucklebone bangles, all clattering together like gruesome wind chimes. Fourteen 3-foot-tall scarecrow-like effigies/small thatched fetishes—each shaped like a tiny man, imp, or rearing serpent—stand propped in the yard, keeping guard before a rickety plank door.  This clearing is roughly 120 feet in diameter, with a dilapidated, circular, 15-foot cottage at its center. There is no smoke coming from the chimney and no movement or light around.  It is summer so no smoke doesn't mean no one is home.
You stop at the edge and Yin will say "Wise one, we are travelers from the city, and are seeking your aid.  May we enter."  There is no answer to your query.  Is she not home?

How long do you wait for an answer?
What do you want to do if there is no answer?

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

After a few minutes of silence the group carefully moves forward toward the hut.  Ragnar finds a "trap" had been designed to make noise, but it obviously hasn't been reset in some time after the last time it was set off.  Also, both Smokey and the Giant Raven refuse to enter the clearing.  Makoto will leave her Raven behind with Milon and observes "This doesn't bode well.  There is likely some sort of magic that is spooking the animals."  The scarecrow-like effigies seem to follow your every move as you walk up toward the door, or is that your imagination running away with you?  At the door from the cobwebs it is obvious that it has not been opened for awhile, a few weeks or more.  It takes Conan putting a little muscle into it to open the door.
Inside, the cottage is dank, reeking, and filled with shadows. Haphazardly hung shelves line the walls, covered in all manner of clay jugs, clouded bottles, strangely cut rocks, rotted bunches of herbs, and a museum of other crude curios and remnants of a bone grinder’s artifice. A rusted iron cauldron, with a mouth nearly 5 feet wide and a depth of at least 3 feet, dominates the hut’s single room, its ash-covered surface shaped with a relief of capering fiends and leering devils. Across from the door, against the far walls, stands a highbacked chair made of wicker, the gigantic curved tusks of some monstrous beast, and thousands of human teeth. In the chair sits what looks like a corpse wrapped in filthy clothes and sprouting patches of thick white mold.

Round 1
Yin's searing light will barely hit.

Before Ragnar and Conan can act the cauldron animates and moves forward and attacks Ragnar, it misses.  The apparition reaches out toward the door and holds it's hands like it is choking someone.  Yin feels bony hands grab her neck and start squeezing.  As she begins to have trouble breathing she realizes it is all in her mind and the feeling goes away (Yin made her will save).  The house starts to ring it's "wind chimes" and the sound quickly reaches damaging levels before fading away as the wind chimes fall silent.  Everyone takes damage and Conan and Ragnar are so distracted that they are dazed on their turn (dazed = no actions on your turn; Conan and Ragnar failed their For saves while Yin and Makoto made their saves).
Meanwhile 4 effigies start moving toward the group menacingly.  In addition to the cobra and fat imp there are a sleeping man and a green woman effigies'.  They all seem to have a transparent "overlay" of the same ugly old crone.  The sleeping man effigies, cobra effigies and green woman effigies just move this round while the fat imp effigies attacks Yin and hits.  Yin takes 1 dam and 1 str damage (Yin made her for save).

The cauldron continues attacking Ragnar, it barely misses.  The apparition reaches out toward the door and holds it's hands like it is choking someone.  Ragnar feels bony hands grab his neck and start squeezing.  He begins to have trouble breathing and is now suffocating (Ragnar failed his will save).  The house starts to ring it's "wind chimes" but it will take some time to sound them loud enough to cause damage.  One of the old dried beast carcasses drops to the ground and then stands up and moves next to Ragnar.  It is basically just skin over bones, so likely skeletal undead type.
Meanwhile the 4 effigies attack.  The cobra effigies and fat imp effigies attack Yin and miss (1 was going to be a crit but got turned into a miss with Protective Luck).  The sleeping man effigies attacks Makoto, hitting for 1 dam and 1 str dam.  The green woman effigies attacks Conan, missing.

Makoto will put her wand away and use Protective Luck on Yin.  Yin will CPE for 9 dam/healing.  It is apparent the positive energy is having an effect/damaging on the various opponents, the skeleton collapses into dust.

The cauldron continues attacking Ragnar, it barely misses.  The apparition continues choking Ragnar, squeezing tighter and tighter (Ragnar takes 4 dam).  It tries to distract Ragnar as well, who is still suffocating (trying to use aid another).  The house continues to ring it's "wind chimes" but it isn't loud enough to cause damage...yet.  Another one of the old dried beast carcasses drops to the ground and then stands up and moves next to Ragnar.  It is basically just skin over bones, so likely skeletal undead type.

Round 5
Ragnar will move and attack the apparition, hitting for 4 dam(8 but only does 1/2 dam vs incorporeal), and then steps out the door.  Conan moves over and misses the cauldron.

Round 6
Makoto will see Conan miss, so she will pull out her wand from her spring loaded wrist sheath, drop her weapon, move over and attack the cauldron with a clw spell.  And she too will roll a 1, missing.  Yin will manage to cast the spell and hit the cauldron, doing 6 dam.  The cauldron crack and stops moving, spilling Yin onto the ground.

The mud walls of the house can now be seen to have the 4 faces from the effigies moving around in it each face has 1 eye that looks like fire.  Those eyes flare up again as the faces fade into the walls.  Conan takes 4 fire dam.  It also starts to ring it's "wind chimes" but it will take some time to sound them loud enough to cause damage.  The apparition continues choking Ragnar, squeezing tighter and tighter (Ragnar takes 11 dam).

Yin uses lesser restoration to heal the str dam and all her oracle spells to heal some of the hp damage.  Between Conan and Makoto's healing they heal the rest.

After searching the hut and pocketing all the loot, you use alchemist fire and a burning hands spell to destroy as much as you can in as controlled a fashion as you can manage (so it doesn't start a forest fire).  As You leave the fire doesn't seem to be out of control, but you just don't have time to watch.  You continue your trip through the rapidly darkening woods toward your last destination looking for a good camping site.
You find a good campsite and set up camp.  Makoto will examine the magic items while dinner is being prepared.

Description
This fine, silver bullseye lantern is embossed with the image of a stoic sentinel. It functions as a bullseye lantern that doesn’t require oil to function. On command, the lantern floats alongside its user, shedding its light in whichever direction the user is looking.

Once per day on command, the lantern can be designated to stand guard for up to 8 hours. The lantern ceases to shed light and keeps watch over a 30-foot-radius area centered on itself. The lantern acts as the alarm spell, except it is activated only by creatures that are Small or larger, and it cannot see invisible creatures. If the lantern detects a creature, it notifies the user that commanded the lantern with a mental alarm, waking the user if necessary. Once the lantern notifies its user, it shines its light on the intruder until commanded to stop.

It is doubtful that 1 lone wolf would attack a group this size, it might just be trying to get close enough to snatch some food or just curious.

Miyogi responds, "Have you ever domesticated an adult wild animal before?   You have trouble getting your magically connected Animal Companion to do something it hasn't been trained for.  To bad the gnome died, they can talk to animals.  I think Makoto is trying to learn something like speak with animals, but she isn't there yet."

Look up the skill(Handle Animal) BEFORE you try to use it.  You have +5 on the Handle Animal Skill, +9 using HA on Smokey;
quote:
"Push" an Animal(dc25): To push an animal means to get it to perform a task or trick that it doesn’t know but is physically capable of performing. This category also covers making an animal perform a forced march or forcing it to hustle for more than 1 hour between sleep cycles. If the animal is wounded or has taken any nonlethal damage or ability score damage, the DC increases by 2. If your check succeeds, the animal performs the task or trick on its next action.

You have to roll a 16 to push your Animal Companion.
quote:
Rear a Wild Animal (15 + HD of animal): To rear an animal means to raise a wild creature from infancy so that it becomes domesticated. A handler can rear as many as three creatures of the same kind at once.
Domesticating an adult wild animal would be even harder!  And you want to do this in the middle of a time sensitive quest?  REALLY....If you want to do stuff, fine, but at least know the rules for what you want to do and what things your character can actually accomplish.  While your basic idea (getting info) is sound, your character and the group are not really suited for getting information from animals.

The group fights an Assassin Vine that has grabbed Makoto's Gt Raven.  And while Yin's Burning Hands doesn't do much damage to the monster itself (dr 10 vs fire), it does clear out the plants that are hiding it giving Conan a chance to hack away at it.  Makoto adds a bomb and soon the plant is dead.  The Gt Raven is hurt but can be patched up with some healing.
Eventually you get near your destination and Miyogi will scout it out.  Sitting squat at the foot of an imposing mountain, a ruined monastery comes into view between ancient gnarled trees. Made of simple stone blocks, worn smooth with the passage of time, the stout building is falling apart. Sections of the slanted shale roof have collapsed and portions of the outer wall have crumbled.  Weeds and wild thorn plants run rampant across the field leading up to the place, leaving only the slightest indication of a path that ends at the ruined front doors. Beyond, an overgrown yard sits in shadow.

While one of them is little more than rubble, the other is relatively intact. The 5-foot tall statue is incredibly worn but it can still be made out as a dwarf holding aloft a great stone hammer. Moss and creeper vines cover most of its surface. Removing the vines around the base uncovers an old dwarven inscription that no one can read (no one speaks dwarf), though it is clear that part was scratched off a long time ago and is no longer legible.  Using lingustics Conan thinks it is a warning.  Makoto is sure (know(history)) that this statue is from the time of the last great dwarven kings, many centuries ago.
Unlike at the Hags Hut, this area seems to have a normal amount of wildlife including a few lone razorcrows who roost atop the tower and caw at you as you get close to the tower.  Razorcrows are a over-large rooks with distinctive, jagged beaks and unkempt, oily black feathers (same stats as hawk).  While they are no threat to medium sized creatures, the smaller ones could be attacked, so the Gt Raven and Miyogi stay close to the group.
Tall grasses and chunks of stone debris have all but overtaken this small yard. Off to one side, a wooden stable has collapsed into a mound of rotting timbers and moldy straw. The outer wall on the east side has also collapsed, leaving a ragged hole. Three doors exit into this yard—a pair of double doors to the east, a single door to the north, and a lone door leading into the squat tower in the southeast corner.
Conan can detect wolf tracks in the are, enough tracks that this is a regular stop for the wolves.  The tracks include some that are large sized.  They lead to the north and east doors, both of which are open.  The door to the tower is closed.
There is a well in the northwest corner of the yard, with a remains of a human body lying next to it.  The body has been dead about a year and was devoured by a rather large animal.  It is apparent that the body has been searched recently by a hobgoblin (tracks), or at least a humanoid wearing hobgoblin boots.  In the grass near the body is a Handy Haversack overlooked by whoever recently searched the body.  Inside the Haversack are normal items not worth much(clothes, etc...), a set of mw thieves tools, 50 feet of silk rope, a small coinpurse with 42 gp in assorted coins, and a small blue vial containing a potion labeled cure serious wounds.
You find no ironbloom mushrooms so far.

Which way?
- north door (open and wolf tracks)
- west door (open and wolf tracks)
- tower door (closed)

You move to the door to the tower and after a quick search for traps, you try to open the door, but it is stuck and will require some muscle to open.  Conan opens it without much fuss.  Thick webs cover much of the ancient crates and barrels stored inside the base of the tower.  A rickety wooden staircase ascends along one wall to reach an open trapdoor above.

You are attacked by a pair of medium sized spiders, I am not going round-by-round, in general what are you going to do?

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

From out of the shadows and webs scurry 2 medium sized spiders.  1 is almost large sized while the other is almost small sized.  They use the webs in the room to move in 3 dimensions, almost like they are flying.  The fight is fairly short.  Conan and Ragnar fight while Makoto uses protective luck and Yin uses a magic missile spell.  No one gets hit and spiders don't make much noise when they fight.  However, the fight does disturb the razorcrows on top of the tower and they take off, "Cawing" in alarm.  They fly around for awhile before settling down on the roof of the monastery.

With the spiders defeated you look around.  It is obvious all of the crates and barrels are rotted.  The stairs used to lead to a second floor, but most of that has rotted and collapsed as well.  Conan takes a look at the stairs and realizes (know:Eng) that they are on the verge of collapse as well (need to use acrobatics to safely ascend them).  While you are looking around, Ragnar spies an oilcloth wrapped item sticking out from the debris.  It turns out to be a masterwork short sword.  More importantly, you see no ironbloom mushrooms.

Which way?
- north door (open and wolf tracks)
- west door (open and wolf tracks)
- search the tower

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

Conan cannot tell where the hobgoblin tracks went, but he can tell the large wolf tracks mostly go to the west door.

4) Beyond the double doors is a small dark hall.  Littered with mounds of debris and a ear’s
worth of dead leaves, it is clear that a narrow path winds inside.  Wolf tracks go north.

5) Door to this room is stuck.  Will require a Str check to open.

6) This small chamber was used to store the traveling cloaks, coats, and hats of visitors to
the monastery. Now only a few moth-eaten rags hang on the pegs and a single soiled hat rests on the table.  Hiding in the southeast corner of the room is a single ironbloom mushroom.  While not enough to save the entire town, the lone mushroom is a promising start.

10) The open double doors lead into darkness.  But Conan can see, using darkvision, that there is a large anvil at the far side and pews in front of it.  Perhaps a shrine of some sort.

Which way?
- open stuck door?
- follow wolf tracks north
- go south to Open Door
- go south to Closed Door
- go across to large open room with the anvil

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

Well, this is going swimmingly! We are going to be overwhelmed with wolves soon. Let’s get inside the old tower and block the door as best we can, then you guys can heal up. I will climb to the roof and do some target practice with my bow.

Ragnar will wait for the others to move inside the tower before going inside himself.

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

Yin says "Ragnar, we will have trouble moving the wolf and a badly injured Conan.  Someone make sure the wolf is dead and I will Channel to heal Conan and then Conan can Channel as well.  Together we can heal up very quickly.  Also, I think the Winter Wolf has spell resistance, so you guys will need to do the killing.  Conan, as soon as the wolf is dead, Channel and then start using your Cure Wounds power on people as you draw your flail.  If you do anything else I will smack you."

She will cpe (leaving out the wolf) for 8 healing.

In reply to aFate (msg # 289):

Conan will do as YIN says after she heals him for 8 hit points, using his CPE and cure sounds on himself and people.   After which, he will switch out his weapon flail with his Cold Iron Horseman's Made.

Conan will stand and motion for Smoky to come to him and he will go pick up his sword and made and the healing potion.   Conan along with his dog will most back over to the others and while he is moving over to them, Conan will put away his sword and his magical flail, leaving out his Cold iron made and asking, while gesturing to the potion.
Does anyone need this more than my dog or myself?.

Yin will cpe again as she says "Conan, now use your Cure Wounds ability on."  Yin does not like the idea of the tower, there is no back door.

Gt Raven  0dam/32hp

Winter Wolf 35dam ; Ac19
wolf2 37dam  dead

Round 8
Makoto will heal Yin with the wand and then put it away.  The Gt Raven will look around.

Yin takes 5 dam/Conan heals 5.  Yin channels Positive Energy for 8 healing.

Round 9
Ragnar move into the hallway behind Yin and looks for threats.  To his left he sees to doors near a left turn that probably leads to the other entrance.  1 door is closed and 1 is open, presumably where the wolves came from.  Miyogi comes flying around the corner.  To his right there is a partially open door leads to a partially collapsed room and a strong smell of poop comes from it.  There is also a ruined dwarven statue that used to sit at the end of the hallway, but the wall behind has collapsed and he can see the outside over the rubble.

Smokey looks around.
Conan grabs his sword and potion.  On the ground is his mace.
Miyogi flies out the door, "What did I miss while I was sneaking away from those darky flappy things."

Nothing from the woods...

Makoto pulls out an extract and hands it to Ragnar, "Drink this expeditious retreat."

Yin takes 5 dam/Conan heals 5 and will put a lifelink on Smokey.

Round 10
Ragnar takes the extract.

Conan realizes, he has already used this power on himself (msg 286), so he uses the potion on Smokey and then puts his sword away.  On the ground is his mace.
Miyogi flies over to Conan and waits to be told what is going on.

Nothing from the woods...

Ragnar thinks about mushrooms. Hmm they like dark smelly ie poo places. He pulls out his everlasting torch and says: I’m going to look in the poo room for mushrooms. Cover me ok?

He will then move into the room and look for mushrooms

"Brother Conan, you potion is empty.  Please use your healing ability on your dog."  She will use a 2nd level spell to heal herself.  "Remember Conan, once combat has started again, you don't need to worry about healing yourself or the dog.  You just have to swing that big cold iron flail."

General plans
shield spell
if she can cast burning hands on as many wolves as possible

Ragnar  0dam/42hp ; expeditious retreat(4min)

Gt Raven  0dam/32hp

Winter Wolf 35dam ; Ac19

Round 10
Makoto invests a Protective Luck hex into her Gt Raven.

Yin takes 5 dam/Conan heals 5 and will cast cmw on herself.

Round 11
Ragnar pulls out a magic torch and looks into the room.  The floor is covered in debris from the collapsed wall and ceiling and there seems to be a layer of guano covering it.  From above Ragnar hears fluttering.  The remnants of the ceiling above seems to be home to thousands of bats.  Ragnar doesn't see any Ironbloom mushrooms (msg111), moving around the room is difficult.  The debris and guano make for treacherous and slow movement.  As he moves around the room, his light seems to disturb the bats and more and more take flight.

Conan picks up his mace and puts it away.
Smokey waits.
Miyogi says "So no one is going to tell me what is going on?"

From out in the woods you hear a howl...

Re: Chp 5 Falcons Hollow

In response to Miyogi, Smoky will start to bark and growl etc. as if understanding what the bird says.   At hearing an actual howl from the woods, Smoky will give out an actual growl and loud bark as like to challenge whatever made the howl.   At hearing the abrupt change in noise from outside, Conan will alert Ragnar to it especially since we are disrupting the bats and will make the move to go back to the others and tells Ragnar so.
