With the decision made, Saris sees to the wounds of the rest of the party.  There is no pretense of bandages or herbs, just a soft touch, a glow, and the wound is healed.  Before the group sets off for Dunston, she asks Xar to watch the prisoners while she speaks to the Men a way off.  "Dwarves are resistant to magic and the gifts of the Ílëlindë Maiar will not long abide in them.  Xar would not accept what I have to offer anyway, so worry not for him.  Also, what I offer you is freely given, not forcefully taken, so it will affect neither you as them," she looks behind at the prisoners, "or me as I was."

She turns and approaches Klale first.  "You already posses great strength.  If it is your wish, I could grant you the strength beyond anything in Arda while you travel with me.  If not, ask what boon you would and if it involves the physical body, I most likely could grant it."

Without waiting for his response, she moves to Ano.  "You are already swift of foot.  If it is your wish, I could grant you speed beyond anything in Arda while you travel with me.  If not, ask what boon you would, and if it involves the physical body, I most likely could grant it."

Again she turns, this time to Phineas, on whom she lays gently a meaty dwarven hand.  "You saw much that such a young mind should not see, yet you still worked to set me free.  I can grant you the ability to endure or avoid any attack against the body you might encounter.  If not, ask what boon you would, and if it involves the physical body, I most likely could grant it."

"Toben," she looks to the robed man with a slight furrowing of her brows.  "My realm is the body, not the mind.  You are a scholar, though, and more suited to the gifts my brethren offer.  However, I do have a few things I could teach you in the discipline known as Biomancy.  While you travel with me, they would come easier to you, but once the knowledge of them has come to you, it would take much for you to forget.  It is all I can offer."

At the last she turns to Ourn.  "You came late to the hunt to save me, but your help was timely nonetheless.  I would grant you the same boon as Klale, except I would increase your agility rather than your strength.  If not, ask what boon you would, and if it involves the physical body, I most likely could grant it."

She steps back to address the group.  "For all those who travel with me and to whom I extend my blessing, even those who prefer to remain in the shadows for the time being, your wounds will heal faster and Iluvatar's Gift to Man will be stayed save for the most dire of need."

"I would accept any blessing, boon, or enchantment that you saw fit to honor me with, kind Saris. If you have chosen to bestow an increased agility to my body, then you have my humble gratitude".

Toben cocks his head to the side for a moment at the mention of dwarves, then redirects his thoughts else where. "Biomancy? Sounds very intriguing. I would be honored.", he says with a bow.

Ano bows deeply in reply and looks back into the forest where they left the cannibals  "I find my self doing quite a bit of running as of late. I would be grateful for your blessing of swiftness"

Leaving Pauric behind, the group travels back toward the Caldera.  It is a simple trip, rapid and without incident.  However, two days out, things change.  There is a column of smoke in the distance.  The pace is increased, but it is not enough.  By the time the group arrives, it is far too late.

Trees are scorched, many burned to the ground.  Corpses lie everywhere.  Emaciated and frail, the people at the Caldera stood no chance against whatever did this.  There are a few healthy bodies among them, all males.  Faelorn identifies them as his men, though they don't have the grafting any more.  It looks like they fought to protect the people, a last redemption before death took them.

There are no dead attackers.  They were either cleared from the field or none died.  Whatever they were, their weapons were designed to cause maximum damage.  Serrated swords, wickedly spiked clubs, claws, teeth.  The monsters that came through here were large and savage.

The trees that line the Caldera remain untouched, but there is an unnaturalness to them now, a warping that makes them look more than sickly.  They look twisted, evil somehow.

A few survivors and a group of mercenaries local to the area are also present on the far side.  They agree to take Faelorn into custody to stand trial in a town similar to Dunstan further north.  Faelorn offers full cooperation and is marched off on foot.

Toben walks the field of battle, and takes note of the various signs left behind by the attackers. "This looks an awful lot like the work of creatures similar to what we saw back in the mountains. The weapons they used would have left wounds like this. Would you agree, Saris?"

He begins to scan the area for their point of origin and which direction they might have left.

Xar inspects a number of the bodies, especially those of Faelorn's fallen men.  He looks over at Saris and nods.

"The Valaraukar make their way out of the depths onto the surface.  This happened many hours ago, before the sun rose.  Most Valaraukar cannot abide the sunlight.  To some it is death, to others a curse.  We must hurry.  Sunset is only three hours away.  Dunstan is next."  She moves away from the tree-line with one last glance at the Caldera.  The look she gives it is odd, but vanishes soon.  Xar leads the way with Saris right behind.

Klale follows. Somehow he seems...massive.

Ano looks into the distance "How long will it take to get to Dunstable, can we warn the people in time? We could try and get them to leave before the enemy arrives.

Phineas trots along, content to listen to the others' discussions, keeping eyes wide for anything of interest (and, of course, looking for opportunities to make sure that any useful equipment that those fallen might have had continues to find use among the still-living).

Ourn's mind wanders to Mairen and her sick child, two of the inhabitants of Dunston he grew to know in his short time there.

" If memory serves me well, the trip from Dunston to here was a little over a 2 day forced march. I tailed two of Faelorns men here from there. They didn't stop for rest or food along the way. The people of Dunston are frail and weak with the Wasting Illness. I suspect its a consequence of this dark star you've spoken of. I highly doubt they'll be in any form to offer resistance. We must move with the greatest of haste if we are to prevent a massacre like we see here"

Ourn quietly and internally mourns for the loss of life in this place, and longs to be rid of the caldera and it's sights and smells as soon as possible.

He looks to Saris, and beckons the group to follow.

Toben listens to Ourns recount, and nobs thoughtfully. "If we've got a two day march, then perhaps there is time for us to gain some ground.These Valaraukar don't know we are on to them and might not be marching beyond a normal pace. If we push it, we may be able to get ahead of them and warn Dunston."

He looks to the rest of the group. "If everyone is up to it, I may be able to help us press through a forced march easier..." He glaces at Saris, "... with a little guidance."

Toben is able to find a way to enhance the groups travel speed and endurance.  It is enough to arrive by morning of the second day.  The village streets appear rather deserted, though no damage is evident.  Dunston is slightly larger than Towertown, and just as antiquated in its architecture.  It's an old town, tired and worn like humanity throughout the Fourth Age.

"The sunlight drives them to find caves or at least shade until the night.  I do not sense their twisted bodies within the town, nor is the smell of their sweat or blood in the air.  We have arrived in time."  Saris rubs her temples and squeezes her eyes closed.  She is quite obviously under great strain.

Toben breaths a sigh of relief. "First and foremost, we should warn the town. The more time they have to get to safety, the better. Second, but certainly no less important, we need to set up some sort of a defense. In lieu of a good defensible building, we could possibly lure them into a position of weakness and gain the element of surprise."

He looks to their new companion, "Ourn, you said you knew some of the people who live here? Who would be the best person to alert?"

Ourn looks to Toben

"A woman, who works the apothecary. Her name is Mairen. She seems to know a fair amount about this place. I cannot guarantee she is still here though. I gave her information on the lands beyond these in the hope she would flee. I will go to her residence and further assess our situation"

Ourn pauses for a moment.

" I just recalled that in my haste to follow Faelorn's men, I left on foot and abandoned my steed. Perhaps he is still alive and well. If he is, I shall instruct Mairen to ride through the town in that case, and assist us in an evacuation, and ultimately send her on her way ".

With that, Ourn excuses himself and makes for apothecary.

Ano accepts the thunderstone from Toben and makes his way towards the watchtower at the edge of town. "I will keep watch and alert you at the first sign of trouble".

Toben nods at Ano. "Perfect, the rest of us will set up our defense here at the Inn. Phin, you can find a shady spot and attack when you see an opportune weakness. I'm not sure what skills Ourn brings to the fight, but when he gets back from warning the towns people we can figure out where to put him. Klale, you may be best suited holding down the entrance to the Inn. Your job is to look large and menacing, and keep any attackers from entering." Toben smiles briefly. "I can help with the large part."

He glances up toward the roof of the Inn. "I'll take position on top of the Inn along with anyone proficient in ranged weaponry. I will try to slow their progress and rain fire down upon them as well."

"Once Ano gets back from the guard tower, I'll prepare ourselves with some enhancements and pray our defense hold."

Oops.

Klale is relaxed, not paying any particular attention to the planning. Realizing he should speak up, he says Whatever the plan, tell me what you want me to do until it's time to fight.

Phineas takes a few minutes to scout the area around the inn, and then dons his gray cloak and secrets himself in a shadowy corner that will afford him both concealment and a good view of the goings-on.

Ourn returns with news that the town is empty...completely.  There is no explanation as to why, but there are no signs of struggle.  It seems an orderly evacuation took place a couple of days ago as houses are tidy, but sparse.  There are no animals or wagons to speak of.  Tracks lead out of town on the road south.

Night drifts into the town borne on shadows of the hills to the west, but the sunset lingers, reflected off clouds rolling in from the north.  A brisk wind kicks up, a front, possibly a storm is blowing in.

There is a slight blur past one of the windows as Ano arrives at the inn, almost bursting though the front door.  Comming through the door he almost looks slightly amazed, but his expression quickly turns dark.  "They are here.  They will be in the town in matter of seconds and they are many.  I counted ten or so our size and many smaller.  They also have two large ones with them and ..." Ano seems to struggle for proper wording for a moment "and something big."

"They did not see me so we should have the element of supprise if we attack when the moment is right, but they will be on us in seconds from now"

Klale makes sure he's adjusted and ready, and he says Hope the big thing isn't Kornari grown.

During the several hours wait prior to Ano's announcement, Toben can be see placing a couple very obvious signs and posting them between the guard tower and the Inn. He points them out to the group. "For your own safety, do not read those signs. You shouldn't be able to trigger them, but ... yeah, I wouldn't even look at them if I were you."

Toben casts Explosive Runes on the two signs and puts the party on the 'nice list'

Startled, Toben jumps a bit as Ano bursts into the Inn. "Sounds a bit more than we expected." He looks out the door. "This storm might just provide a little cover to slow them down."

He waves his staff in increasingly larger concentric circles over his head, mutters a few words, and large dust storm begins to stir about fifty yards from the Inn.

"I guess we get into position now."

Toben casts Dust Storm out in front of the end. If time allows, he'll place an Entangle centered in the dust storm.

Ourn, who has been fiddling with a crossbow that Klale gave him, looks up as Ano bursts in, and is startled for a brief second. He glances down once more at his new weapon and the 20 or so bolts he was able to gather,amd steeles his nerves. At the mention of a certain name, he asks the collective group:

" I know our time is short, but who is this Kornari fellow I've heard you all speak of. What does he look like? I would hate to fire a bolt at an unknown man in the fray that turns out to be on of our companions. ".

Toben looks at Ourn, and with a straight face, asks "Do you believe in magic?" Due to lack of time, he continues without waiting for a response. "You will likely see a great many things tonight that exceed explanation, but if you see anything..." He pauses for a moment to find the right word, "... reptilian in nature, I'd pick a different target."

He looks at Klale. "You might want to step outside for this next one, my friend."

If Klale steps outside, Toben will cast Enlarge on him. After that, he prepares a final spell which he will cast as soon as the attackers come into view.

Enlarge will add +2 to strength, -2 to dexterity, -1 to attack (this will likely be a wash with the +2 str), -1 to AC due to size. Klale's size will increase to large, giving him a reach of 10'. Ourn's mind is flooded with images of crodile-like men and great beasts with scaley wings, while trying to picture what Toben alludes to.

Fully ready for battle, with his newfound dexterity and confidence from recent successful combat, Ourn only briefly ponders the possibilites of what Kornari could be. He is inwardly happy that the town is empty, and that the potential loss of innocent life is negated for the time. His spirits are high, despite not knowing what he and his new friends are getting in to. Ourn smirks and says " Reptilian you say? That sounds wonderful and dreadful all in the same. ".

He snaps his crossbow up into a salute. " Gentlemen, and lady, may The One smile upon us all. ".

With that, Ourn heads upstairs to a room with a good vantage point on third story.

Grunts and barks come from the gloom and dust, the first warning that they have arrived.  When the creatures spill into the main street, they are shocked at the abrupt end to the dust and it makes them relieved more than wary.  They try to shake the dust from their eyes and for the moment, they can't see anything.

As Ano reported, there are ten of the human-sized creatures, orcs most likely.  They are full of tusks, dark-colored skin, and wiry hair.  Grime and oil covers them and the smell wafts across the clearing makes you glad you aren't eating dinner at the moment.

Behind them, two large creatures lumber out of the dust.  Their heads reach the windowsills of second storied buildings.  One has a mop of dark hair on top, but the other is completely bald.  Their faces are scrunched together and almost flat, barely a pair of holes for a nose, two piggish eyes, and long slits for mouths closed against the dust.  The bald one is missing two of six fingers on one hand.  They hardly bother with clothing, enough to protect the crotch area from attack, which may be a weakness to exploit.  Saris identifies them as mountain trolls, large, strong, and historically stupid.

The sound of wood cracking and breaking follows them.  Something larger follows, something too big to fit in the street completely.  Saris has no name for this, but Xar taps on her shoulder and she nods.  "Vastidon."

There is no sign of the little, fast movers Ano spoke of.

GM:  This is the surprise round.  You get one movement and one action considered simultaneous.  You also need to post your initiative roll which is either take 10 + Init or an actual roll result.  After that, I will post results of the surprise round and an initiative list.  Please post in initiative order so we don't get confused.  There are a lot of us and this is a big battle.

Toben frowns as the attackers emerge from the storm without any preceding explosions. Grasping his staff firmly in both hands, he extends it and mutters "Strix hesi mamissi mrith nautkynir qeelak."

He gives the group a once over, nods, and then makes his way to the roof of the Inn.


Toben casts Haste on Klale, Ano, Phineas, Ourn, and Xar and lasts for 5 rounds.
Each recipient gains +30 movement speed, +1 to attack, +1 to AC, +1 to reflex saves, and 1 extra attack when making a full attack.

16:39, Today: Toben Ironsprings rolled 21 using 1d20+2.  Initiative.

Ourn braces himself on the 3rd story window sill, and lines up a shot center mass on the big bald troll. He slows his breath to steady his aim, and waits for the fight to begin before taking the shot, as he doesn't want to give away his position.



22:04, Today: Ourn rolled 13 using 1d20+10.  Initiative.

Klale "greets" the nearest foe. His backhand slash grazes the belly, causing the to realize that there may be little reason to plan for the future. Then the forward slash emphasizes the point.

I'm not taking enlarge so as to keep my DEX.
I think I have this right: Klale is +14 +1 +1 on attack, and +14 +1 on damage. I can take a 15 for an attack roll. I can subtract up to ten from my attack and add to damage. 15+17 = 32 to Attack. I can make it 15+7 and always have a 20+.
Based on that:

Ano follows Klale out the front door of the inn and looks out over the group of enemies, noting the location.  Ever since he revived Nestael's blessing, Ano has seemed more restless and twitchy then normal, and when Toben's spell hit him he felt like he was almost vibrating in place.  He felt like he had energy to burn.

Ano picked out two orcs out of the crowd and takes a slow step towards them. When his foot hits the ground he surges forward at incredible speed, and aims to drive his fists into the gut of both orcs.  After that he follows up with a pair of fast, whirling kicks directed at the two.


Ano takes 15 on his 4 attacks, so that's 23 to hit with each attack

So that's 17 damage to the first orc and 18 damage to the second orc.

Saris finds a spot hidden from view within the first floor of the inn.  She sits down, crosses her legs and closes her eyes.  There is only the steady, deep breathing of meditation from her after that.

Xar waits for Toben's spell to finish, then in a blur disappears into the night shadows of the town.

Phineas tenses himself to readiness in the shadows, then quietly springs to the nearest orc, Masterwork dagger at the ready, taking a stabbing lunge at the creature's back. Toben's mysterious incantations allow him to strike twice before dancing out of the creature's range and hopefully immediately out of the others' sight, hoping to preserve his advantage of surprise.

With Toben's spell speeding up an already Maiar-enhanced group, the toll on the Valaraukar invaders begins to tell.

Klale lays into one of the orcs, but though the creature staggers back and sports two serious wounds, it is in now way out of the fight.

Ano's attacks also stagger two orcs, just managing to get the dust out of their eyes.  Though they also seem to be significantly hurt, they also don't seem near death.

Phineas' attack does not penetrate the heavy hide armor the orc is wearing.  Though thankfully the monster did not see where the attack came from as it rubbed the last of the dust from its eyes.  The young rogue is able to step back into the shadows and remain hidden while the orc readies himself and tromps towards Klale.

The creatures blink the dust out of their eyes and look around.    One of the orcs take a second glance at a sign post with recent paint.  Suddenly the sign explodes with arcane energy throwing the orc back along with two others that happened to be nearby.  A second sign explodes across the way, flinging two more orcs backward into one of the mountain trolls.  Angered by the sudden impact, the mountain troll grabs one of the orcs and uses it like a crude club to swat the other one through a storefront wall.  Then it continues to drag the orc it grabbed, which is now unconscious, like a club through the dirt towards Klale.

Just before Ourn can loose a bolt at the large, bald troll, he notices a shadowy creature on the second story balcony, making a leap for someone down below. He swiftly shifts his attention and aim and lets his projectile fly, hoping to at least knock the creature off course.

Ourn takes a 10 on his single attack, yielding a 19 total.

The two bolts whiz through the air one behind the other and find their mark in its back. The shadowy creature's trajectory is horribly skewed from its intended landing spot, and it plops upside down in the middle of the street with a thud. Its neck is twisted, and its head is cocked at an unnatural angle.

Phineas lurks in the shadows, concerned that his most formidable attacks seemed to have no effect on the weakest of the attackers. Rather than launching another attack, he watches carefully for any more effective opportunities to engage.

Toben reaches the top of the stairs, and eyes smile a little when he hears the explosions go off. He walks over to a window closest to where the fight is taking place, and peeks out to survey the field.

Deciding to target the squeals coming from within the dust storm, he launches a small stone into the storm. He waits for the following explosion before turning and continuing his trek to the room of the Inn.

Ano's hands blur as he delivers a pair of lightning fast punches to each of the two orcs.  He aims for joints and vitals, trying to take themdown quickly.  He then quickly turns and sends three snap kicks at the head and ribs of a third orc.

Ano uses his flurry of Blows and takes 15 for his 7 attacks.  So that's 22 for each attack.
19:29, Today: Ano rolled 63 using 7d8+28 with rolls of 3,7,1,6,5,7,6.  Flurry of Blows 7 attacks.
So that's 18 damage to the first, 15 to the second and 30 to the third.

Klale, distracted, nearly lets his sword slip, so deals comparatively little damage with is first stroke. However, he makes up for it on his return.

The creature Ourn drops in the air is likely a goblin or a close relative.  None have time for a closer look, so the name sticks in the head of those who think it.

Toben's rock silences the squealing from the dust, but it is anyone's guess whether the silence comes from death or caution of the intended targets.

Ano knocks two orcs around and causes one to stagger and fall to the ground from the damage it took in quick succession (more than half in one round).

Klale, hardly aware of the goblin that almost landed on his back, spins and slashes at the knee of a mountain troll, before returning to his original target for the killing blow which knocks the creature several feet back before it realizes it is dead.

Mimicking the goblin's move, Xar leaps from the damaged building onto the back of the orc-wielding mountain troll.  He stabs swift and sure with both knives using them to both wound and find purchase as the giant creature flails about trying to remove him.  At the opportune moment, he somersaults over the troll's questing hand and lands on his feet near his next target.

Free of the dust and hurting, the orcs retaliate.  Whether its because he is the most devastating, or seems to be the weakest target, they converge on Ano.  Only one is able to land a blow [8 DMG], but it stings.

One of the mountain trolls, angered by Klale's audacity, swings a mighty club at the fighter.  Klale doesn't even feel the breeze of a near miss.  The other troll is unsuccessfully chasing after Xar with the orc in hand.

Then out of the dust lumbers the Vastidon.  It is a six legged draconian creature covered in scales and with three rows of short ridges down its back from head to toe.  The head is long and flat like an alligator with a mouth full of dull, squarish teeth for grinding bone.  It's eyes are small and surrounded by scales and spines, near impossible to strike with anything but piercing weapons.  It plods alone with a distinct waddle, crashing through the fronts of buildings on either side due to its incredible size, wider than a mountain troll is tall.  It sees its prey and lets out a terrifying roar that shatters the windows of more than a block of businesses and homes in Dunstan.  It's tail ends in a club-like ball of bone, which does nothing for the structural integrity of already highly damaged buildings.  It sees Klale and starts in his direction.

As further insight completely fails to come to him, Phineas shrugs, mutters "I'd better do *something*" to himself, and launches at the nearer of Ano's two attackers. Unfortunately, his traditional battle luck seems to have returned, and his blows skitter off the orc's armor. He does his best to quickly duck out of sight once more.

Toben finishes his ascension to the roof and makes his way to the edge. His eyes go wide and jaw drops at the sight of the massive creature that emerges from the dust storm.

Already having hasted his allies, he decides to treat the Valaraukar with the opposite effect. He grips his staff and waves it over the field of battle. The victims begin to feel their muscles tighten and lock up as the spell saps their speed and combat effectiveness.

Effected targets can only take a move action or standard action per turn. They gain a -1 penalty on attack rolls, AC, and Reflex saves. Their movement is also reduced by half, to a minimum of 5 ft.

Ano takes the hit and flinched a bit before rushing forwards again and attacks the two orcs still standing before him.  His hands blur as a hail of fists strike out at the two orcs, all directed at their center mass.  For the moment he was deciding to ignore the very large creature coming towards the and focus on other issues.

Ano take 15 on his 7 attacks.  So 23 to hit for his 3 attacks on one orc and 4 attacks on the other.

Klale concentrates on the task at hand though his eyes take note of the  vastidon before and after his strokes. He works on the mountain troll, hopping sideways between the fist (a slice across) and the second (a stab upward). If feasible, he turns his back so the goblin is between him and a foe.

The roar and size of the Vastidon is uttwrly terrifying to Ourn. Never has he seen such a creature. In a desperate measure to try and even the odds,he rapid fires two bolts at its head.

Ourn doesn't quite see where or if the bolts hit the Vastidon, and is doubtful as to their effect. He continues his slow rhythmic breathing to try and steady his aim, and to calm his nerves.

Phineas is able to hide just before two smaller creatures move cautiously past his hiding spot.  They stop just out of view around a corner.

Three more of the small creatures move out from behind a building, darting towards the action.  They are faster than seems naturally possible, but not nearly as fast as Ano.  In contrast, the vastidon and one of the trolls look like they are slogging through a swamp.  The larger creature takes agonizingly slow steps forward, but does nothing else.  It does not even seem to take note of Ourn's arrows bouncing around its face and shoulders and it is impossible to tell at this distance if the creature is even wounded.

The slowed troll swings the orc comically at his own back, but Xar is too quick by far.  He buries his daggers on either side of the creature's spine and lets gravity do the work.  Blood sprays from the fissures in the creatures back in a magically slow fountain that eventually splashes across the ground.  So too does the troll fall, already dead, but not likely to hit the ground for a couple more rounds of traded blows.

Fortunately for the orc the troll was wielding, the troll lets go and the orc drops to the ground, not moving but still breathing.

The other, however, gets in a glancing blow [8 dmg, no knockback] in response to Klale's powerful assault.

Ano's attacks are so destructive, one of the orcs actually has his chest caved in from the constant force.  It gurgles and collapses to the ground in a heap.  However, three more, somewhat singed from Toben's spell, move in to cover their fellow on the ground as he rises.  Their attacks are pitiful feints meant more to distract than to damage. 

From out of the gloom pour more of the smaller creatures, upwards of twenty and beyond.  They swarm towards Klale and Ano and will be on them in seconds.

Secretly relieved to have an opportunity to pick on something his own size, Phin again darts from the shadows, this time with the intent of putting his dagger into the back of one of the two goblins who just passed him. The first of his attacks appears to find its mark, though in his hastened state, the second goes far awry. He dances back toward his hiding spot after striking.

Seeing the wave of enemies surge forward spurs Ourn into a frenzied reload of his crossbow.

Reload repeating crossbow, full round action. Bolts will be 5/5 loaded next round. 16 remaining total.

The sudden rush of goblins from the darkness gives Toben a moment of pause. He reaches down and plucks a small stone from the roof of the inn, and prepares to throw it. As the goblins begin to spread out across the field, he realizes some start to spill out of the blast zone and decides to adjust his tactics. He hold the stone up, and with a look of intense concentration, it splits into 4 smaller pebbles.

He whispers "Seilor duulo dout nessmotva bekir", and they immediate race towards the goblins. They fly past Klale and Ano and detonate once they are far enough away to cause them any harm.

Fatigue from the amount of energy Toben is expending is starting to show.

Toben casts Exploding Stone modified by the sculpt spell feat.
The blast is broken up into 4 separate 10' cubes rather than a 20 ft radius blast.

Ano sees the goblins approaching and realizes that they are in trouble, but has little option but to focus on the direct threat in front of him.  He lashes out at the weakest of the two orcs with a series of open palm strikes and throws a single kick back at one of the orcs who where closing in.

Ano take 15 on his 7 attacks.  So 23 to hit for his 3 attacks on each of the two weakest orc and 1 attack on one of the others.

Klale spins and flings his shield at the approaching goblins.
He reaches back and grabs the goblin on him and, having squeezed whatever part he has hold of, tosses it toward the goblins also.
He draws his hammer.
He slices at the nearest foe.

One goblin is severely wounded by Phineas' backstab, but the other quickly dodges the second attempt and retaliates.  However, it has moved too far and is slow to recover, missing both times.  The wounded goblin spins and swings with a short sword in a swipe that catches the young rogue's armor, but does not penetrate to skin.  However, the offhand dagger catches him in the arm, but only with a scratch [1 DMG] that immediately closes up.

While Ourn reloads, one of the goblins points to his location and three begin to approach.

Toben's attack catches the Valaraukar completely off guard.  To this point, the scholar's spells have been subtle or hidden.  The raw power displayed stuns those caught in the blast so that none even think to dodge the main burst of exploding shards.  The spell cuts more than ten of them to ribbons.  However, from one of the rooftops flies a black bolt, which finds Toben's left hand.  Though it does not sink in, it does open up a sizable wound [2 DMG]...which immediately closes up.

Ano's blows are wearing the orcs down, but none are down yet.  They return his attacks with those of their own.  The first almost connects with a swift strike to the waist, but Ano's speed removes his body from the blade's path.  The other two orcs are halfhearted in their efforts at best and come closer to hitting each other than Ano.

Klale's shield scatters three goblins who are prevented entirely from attacking by their impatient fellow who attacked Klale ahead of them.  He hits the ground and rolls a bit.  The warrior then strikes out at the nearest enemy, the remaining troll [9 DMG], delivering a blow to the monster's shin on the upswing while drawing the hammer.

Two more goblins from a different angle attack Ano.  Dodging flying goblins, an angry ogre, and weary orcs, the two goblins miss the blurred form of the monk.  One misses so bad he stabs one of the orcs in the side.  Luckily for the orc, the blade scrapes off his armor and he is not hurt by the goblin.

The vastidon plods slowly forward and will reach the main battle in two rounds if things don't change.  The first troll still falls in comical fashion, blocking one approach to Klale and Ano, but cutting them off from Ourn and Toben's position in the inn.  The second troll slams his club into the now shield-less fighter, an angry, brutal blow to the chest [15 DMG] that sends careening a few steps toward the vastidon.  Only Klale's enhanced strength keeps him from flying through the air or falling before the advancing behemoth.

Xar disappears between a couple of stores into the town.

Unable to effectively slink back into the shadows with the two goblins' attention now focused on him, Phineas turns his full attention to the wounded opponent in an attempt to finish it off. He feints and then makes a lunge toward the bleeding creature, though he's clearly a bit rattled by the chaos of combat and the appearance of the vastidon.

Toben clutches his hand briefly, but smiles confidently as the wound quickly closes. He looks over his shoulder, "Ferb?". The furry companion pops its head out of Toben's travel pack and scurries on to his shoulder. An exchange between them lasts long enough for Toben to give a simple set of instructions.

The ferret leaps off Toben's shoulder, and in a flash of fur and claws, scampers down the side of the wall. Ferb begins to dash across the field of battle, his trajectory appears to be headed straight for the vastidon.

Toben watches for a moment, then turns for the stairs and disappears into the Inn.

Ourn, fully reloaded, takes note of the goblins that have spotted his sniper's nest. He rests his cheek on the stock of the repeating crossbow, and takes aim on other goblins in the fray. He decides that he'll handle the 3 in close quarters when they reach him.

Ano dodges the flying goblins and takes a quick look back at the vastadon, only realizing now how close it had gotten.  Ano continues to focus on the weakest looking orcs as his assault continues.  He starts striking with knees and elbows, and jumping  between targets in a blur.

Ano takes 15 on 7 attacks.  23 to hit, 3 attacks on the weakest orc and two attacks on the next two weakest.

Ignore the first roll I made.  Had it accidentally set to reroll max

[It'll be important for Klale to know when the vastidon is close and what foes are between it and him. PS. Does the vastidon stomp on some enemies?

Phineas struggles to connect with his adversaries allowing them to come back at him with coordination.  The first merely scrapes the youth's armor, but it allows the other to position well.  With a wicked laugh, the goblin slashes slow with his long knife and rips through Phineas' hamstring [6 DMG, RFLX to not go prone]

Ourn launches two bolts with great skill into the melee.  The first slams into one of those goblins attacking Ano, a shot that penetrats into the torso, but does not hit anything vital.  A second bolt finds one of those who had dodged shield and fellow goblin from Klale, this time in the upper arm, tearing a gash without embedding.  Neither wound is enough to slow the goblins down.

Ano, hitting his rhythm, delivers brutal killing blows to the weakened orcs.  When his blinding speed ceases, they all fall to the ground in sync, dead.

Klale finishes off another orc attempting to strike Ano, slicing through armor and chest with equal ease and following through with a crushing blow to the sternum with the deadly, beautiful hammer.  Blood sprays from the orc's mouth as it coughs trying to catch breath in lungs compressed by collapsed rib cages.  Klale's spin brings him smoothly around to the troll, which he slashes high up through the chest to the throat area.  As the troll bends somewhat to protect itself, the fighter finishes it off with the trailing hammer straight up through the chin and on out the top of the skull leaving only half a skull and a bloody mess.  The troll actually beats its companion to the ground, but just as dead.

The remaining orc look around at the carnage of its foes and the relative unscathed targets of his raid party.  With a last glance at the vastidon, it darts between two buildings and is gone.

As Ourn concentrates on covering his companions, the three goblins close in a burst of unnatural speed.  They attack the archer with rapid, vicious swings, but none are able to connect with the agile man.

Six converge on Ano, ignoring Klale.  Only one is able to connect, and that by sheer statistical luck because of the overwhelming number of attackers.  It's a good solid blow [CRIT! 4 DMG - Chest] to the monk's right rib cage that tears the shirt and a good chunk of skin right off.


The goblins seem fanatical, unwilling to preserve their own lives as the orc did.  None appears to be looking to leave any time soon.

The vastidon continues its comical, inevitable plod toward the fight, its malevolent eyes set on Klale.

The goblins continue against targets selected, however, they cannot withstand the raw physical power and skill of the group.  They are quickly dispatched, even the sniper (by Xar), leaving only the vastidon.

A tiny shadow darts from a building to the lumbering juggernaut and leaps onto a front leg before hopping away.  Too slow from the spell, and likely not even noticing the ferret, the vastidon plods on for two more steps.  It's skin turns a dark brown, the color of freshly tilled dirt.  Then its eyes droop and close just before the legs buckle and the creature sinks to the ground...much like the dead troll.  A slow, deep breath shows the thing to still be alive, but somehow sleeping.

The square is suddenly quiet except for the panting of the heroes and a small nighttime breeze stirring up detritus in the town streets.

Toben takes a moment to check on Saris. When he hears the thud of slumbering vastidon, he steps outside the Inn to evaluate the situation.

He sighs in relief. "That thing will only be asleep for a short while. We need to figure out how to handle it, and quickly."

Ano stands amidst the carnage of battle as he turns to find no more enemies around him.  Every thing seems quiet now and he feels strange and out of place now that he is standing still.  He is breathing heavily as he checks the wound in his side and makes his way over to the others.

"That wasn't so bad" he offers up a small smile, despite looking exausted.

Klale walks over to the vastidon and estimates the chances of skewering it in the eye. While doing so, he beckons to Ourn.

Ourn comes down stairs from his shooting spot and out onto the street to investigate the Vastidon with Klale. He marvels at the massive creature, and feels tiny compared to it.  "I courted a girl that looked like this beast, once. Homely thing she was, but could plow a field faster than a pony".

Taking in the remaining gravity of the situation, Ourn Looks to Klale.
"How do you suppose we're to dispose of this? I don't reckon he'll be napping for long."

Hobbling only slightly as he rejoins the others, Phineas looks wonderingly at the massive creature. "Is it a dumb brute, I wonder? Perhaps without someone leading or prodding it, it could go back to…well, wherever such things come from. If we can't leave it to run free, however, it would seem that our options are to tie it up, which may not be effective, or to dispatch it."

Toben looks over at Ourn, "Assuming nothing disturbs it, we have less than an hour." His gaze shifts over to Phineas. "Given the size of this thing, dispatching may be difficult. Xar and Saris seemed to know what it's called, perhaps they have some ideas. You make an interesting point though, Phin. None of these creatures seem smart enough to lead an assault like this. Something must have spurred their march forward, and chance are it's still out there."

Toben reaches into his pouch and pulls out a tiny bell. "We may be here a short while longer, and I"d rather not have something surprise us. I'll set up a perimeter."

Toben casts Alarm centered on the Inn. He gives everyone in the party the password to not set off the spell, Nestael.

How about a point-blank shot at one eye and a sword thrust at the other? The creature certainly was eyeing me...headed straight for me. I'd rather try some vastidon steak than be crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside for its pleasure.

Xar appears out of the gloom to stand slightly apart from the group.  He eyes the vastidon with a hand rubbing the shadow of growth on his chin.

"The vastidon is extraordinarily hard to kill."  Saris approaches from the inn where she had been meditating.  "Shooting it in the eye may blind it, but the eyes are closed and your bolt will barely scratch its eyelid.  The whole thing is well armored.  It usually takes an army to bring one down.  They aren't stupid, but they are just animals, and thankfully slow.  Enchanted weapons seem to work best, but that is beyond..." she winces and rubs her head.  "Nestael's expertise."

Toben chuckles at Klale. "Yes, it clearly seemed to have a taste for a challenge."

He walks closer to the sleeping giant to size it up a bit better. "Given the chance, it seems like it could swallow a man whole. Maybe if we were to make you bigger it would have a harder time." He notices something once he is finally close enough.

"Ourn, you put a few bolts into this beast, didn't you?" He scratches his chin. "I don't see a mark on him. Looks like it's got some regenerative properties too."

He looks over to Saris, "We are fresh out of enchanted weapons. What do you suggest? I don't think we can just leave it here..."

A snort escapes the vastidon's nose, though it doesn't wake.  It opens its mouth a mere few inches and reveals a strange bulb for a tongue covered in brown goop.  The mouth clacks shut a couple of times in rapid succession as the vastidon adjusts itself in the dirt of the road, then all is still again.

With the adrenaline of the battle wearing off, Toben takes a step back as the fatigue catches up with him and really doesn't have the presence of mind to notice much else.

"If you all don't need me for a few minutes. I'm going to take a breather..." he pants, "... back in the Inn."

He turns and walks back into the Inn.

Toben will rest/meditate for as long as he is allowed to do so.

Ourn walks back to the inn with Toben and says " I'm not sure whether or not my bolts even penetrated its facial armoring. Given what Saris has said of it though, I'd think it's safe to assume just that. This one's hide is just too thick for conventional means. I suppose we could light it on fire or something of the like... however, an unethical act coupled with a flaming behemoth tearing through town doesn't sound like the best plan of action either.. fun, but not the best."

Toben listens patiently to Ourn as they walk back to the Inn. "I was hoping Saris and Xar might have more guidance regarding that creature. I agree that something should be done about it, but I have no idea what. This may be a bit out of our league."

Xar places a hand on Saris and the two look at each other for a moment.  Then Saris turns to the remaining members of the group in front of the vastidon.  "The reason I said it takes an army is that the armor of the vastidon is nearly impervious to non-enhanced weapons.  Mithril is more effective, but just barely.  It takes multiple hits constantly to wear it down and kill it.  We've tried all manner of normally devastating tactics against the thing, but they do no more than a regular stab with a sword or bludgeon with a hammer."  Her voice modulates back and forth from the soft spoken healer to the otherworldly sound of the Maiar within.

She looks at Klale. "Stabbing through the eye may blind it, but that will hardly slow it down once its away.  There is something behind the eyeballs that is equal to any place on its skin.  The optic nerve grows into and through this and only the narrowest of shafts, poniards, or rapiers has a chance of following the nerve to the brain.  Even then, that's not likely to kill it, though it might do somewhat more damage."

Turning to Ano, she smiles.  "Ano, you have the best chance of overcoming its regeneration ability while staying away from its attacks.  If you can consistently strike it with your blessing, the rest can likely do enough damage to take it down."

She frowns.  "Trapping it in a pit or lake won't do, though, as they are impressive diggers in rock.  Dirt will be like so much swimming for them, which they are also good at."

Klale says Hmm, how about the anus, and either the testicles or vagina?

Xar's eyebrows lift at Klale's suggestion, but Saris is thoughtful.  "We've...never encountered one like this before.  I don't know that the dwarves have had opportunity to explore those...avenues."

Xar's right lip quirks slightly.

Ourn simply nods to Toben, and then overhears Klale's suggestions.

His jaw drops and his eyes widen for a second or two.
"I think I'll sit that one out, crossbow or no crossbow.."

Ourn walks to the door to look the street over once more.

Ano nods, looking concerned.  "If you think that's what is best, then i am up for it.  While the beast sleeps I could strike it as many times as possible and see what happens."

Toben rests quietly in the Inn, waiting for his energy to return. The low murmur of conversation outside does not seem to catch his attention.

Phin looks unhappy at the prospect of simply slaughtering the sleeping beast. "Saris, is there any way we could simply lure it out into the wild again? Perhaps put a suggestion in its mind that there's food out there? Or to create the smell of an pulchritudinous mate for it to follow?"

Ourn turns to Saris. " Saris, how do you suppose the motley group of orcs and trolls ever got a creature like this Vastidon to follow them without turning on them in the first place? If a creature such as this can be commanded or befriended by the likes of these simple minded fiends, what truly stops us from becoming its new masters? Surely there must be some way to appeal to its nature without the need to slaughter it while it slumbers? I certainly don't want it to harm any of us, or anything like that... but the way I've been brought up, well... something doesn't sit right with me to just kill it while it's incapacitated. If that is ultimately what we must do, I'll perform my duties diligently of course. But if there is another way that is mutually beneficial, I think we should explore the possibilities if we can.".

Ourn looks at the rest of the group to gauge how they receive his questions to Saris.

Saris closes her eyes at the question and there is a very long moment of silence.  When she speaks, her eyes remain closed and she is all Nestael.  "The beast is warped by magic from the dark star who is my counterpart.  It is made into an engine of destruction and there is nothing more to its being that consuming all living things it can fit in its mouth.  Whatever it had been at one time, there is nothing of that left to save.  It needs to be destroyed."

Ourn remains silent at the news, but only for a moment.

"Very well. If there is no other practical course of action, and the beast is beyond returning to its natural state, putting it down and snuffing out the dark magic within it is what should be done then. I will do as you instruct".

Klale goes hind-end-looking.

Klale returns to the group. Here's what I found: The anus is vulnerable. If we had a a spear, a fishing spear with backward barbs would be best, it can do lasting damage until it's out. mixing its wastes with its insides should cause it a problem for some time...infection. There are two places where a sword could do damage. One would seriously hamper a leg; the other would be an irritation. Then there's the eyes; a point-blank shot should get one, and the arrow should stick. So,your thoughts? And time's passing.

"Well if I am able to break through the skin and do some real damage, my first attack will be at the head or the neck, I would like to make this as quick as possible.  Attacking the ass seems a bit torturous.

The furrow in Toben's brow lessens as precious minutes pass by. As his energy returns, less concentration is needed, and he starts to pick up bits and pieces of the conversation outside. Something about asses and eyeballs almost pulls him out of his meditative state, but he manages to maintain focus.

I have the hammer. It could break a jaw.

There is a woosh of air from the front of the vastidon and a small dust devil blows up from the ground for a moment.

Ano looks around at the others I suppose we should not delay much longer, I am prepared to begin whenever you are ready.  I must find a good spot it begin." He the  walks over to the vastadon and loons around its head trying to find a good spot to attack.

Klale hands his hammer to Ano. The jaw, maybe the front, or the snout where it breathes, but I think a broken jaw leaves us one less thing to worry about. I wont' mind if yo drop the hammer to disencumber yourself.

I'll get the rear end.

We need to coordinate, so somebody should stand where we attackers can see and give an arm signal.

About now, Klale picks up his shield.

Phin quickly steps to a spot where he can see all of the team bent on the creature's destruction and raises an arm to give the coordinated attack signal once everyone's in place.

While this is all getting set up, Xar steps silently into the inn and taps Toben on the shoulder, giving the young scholar a chance to join in the preparations outside.

The two of them step outside in time to see Phin raise his hand to give the signal.

Seeing Phineas's hand shoot up into the air causes Toben to quicken his pace a little. "Woah, just a second. I think I have something that'll help."

He gives the vastidon a wide berth as to not wake it up prematurely, and stands next to Phineas. "I think I overheard something about normal weapons being relatively ineffective against this beast. I've got a temporary remedy that should help bypass its defenses."

"I can only imbue two things, so we must choose wisely... and quickly."

Toben is offering up two castings of Greater Magic Weapon. My suggestion would be to give it to the two that can do the most damage. At his current level it'll give an enhancement bonus of +2 to hit and damage and count as magical for purposes of overcoming damage resistance.

I could use all the help I can get. I hope to be running around keeping to the hind parts, attacking the rear and, with luck crippling one leg...maybe even two. I hope it'll be a bloody business.

He considers his shield and set it aside. This probably won't help. I'll wield the sword two-handed.

Toben nods at Klale. He raises his hand and whispers, "Tiichi nomeno cayosin mrith dout vers." The blade glows brilliantly for a moment, but quickly fades as the spell takes hold. "That will last for a few hours, I think."

He looks over to Phineas, "I can do one more weapon...", he gaze shifts to Ourn, "... or a bundle of ammunition."

Toben thinks to himself for a second, then pulls the light crossbow from his back. "If you choose the ammunition, you could split it among yourselves and be twice as effective." He holds the crossbow out for Phineas. "You can borrow this for the time being if that is what you both decide."

Toben casts Greater Magic Weapon on Klales sword.
If Ourn and Phineas decide to enchant the ammo, Toben will contribute his 15 bolts to the casting as well. The spell can enchant up to 50 pieces of ammo of the same type.

"While I'm fond of group decisions, my vote is for the enchanted bolts. The two of us piercing this monstrosities' hide would be more effective than if one of us or the other received your aide singularly."

Ourn produces the 14 bolts he has left over from the previous fight.

Toben nods in agreement. "Yes, that is probably best." He takes the bolts Ourn hands him and combines them with his own. He lays them on the ground, fans them out, and whispers "Tiichi nomenoi bluthelic mrith dout vers."

Like Klale's blade, the bolts glow brightly for a moment, then fade as the spell takes hold. He scoops up half the bolts and hands them back to Ourn. The other half, he hands to Phineas.

"I've got one last preparation for everyone, once you take your places", he says with a smile.


Toben casts Greater Magic Weapon on the 29 bolts. 15 he gives to Ourn, 14 to Phineas.

As soon as everyone is in position, Toben will cast Haste to kick off the fight.

Ano takes his place waiting for the attack to start.  He placed his fists together and focuses for a moment, and his hands begin to glow with a faint white energy.  Ano opens his eyes and settles in to a sturdy fighting pose.

Ourn moves about 30 or so feet from the Vastidon, takes a knee, and steadies himself with his crossbow. He can almost feel the bolts loaded within humming with energy.

Suddenly Saris' eyes go wide.  "You must hurry.  We haven't much time!"  The Gonhirrim woman moves with hurried grace into a nearby building, one that looks to have the best chance of surviving the battle throes of the vastidon, and disappears inside.

Knowing the duration of the spell the vastidon was under, Toben cocks his head to the side, unsure why she was in such a panic. Nonetheless, he heeds her warning and makes haste with the hasting.

He quickly scans the area looking for Xar, but is unable to find him to include him as a target. He looks to the group, gives them a nod and holds his staff aloft. "Majak udoka wer tiichir di qeelak."

With his enhanced speed, Toben pulls back to the build Saris retreated into and takes his position there.

Toben casts Haste upon himself, Klale, Ano, Ourn, and Phineas.

Prep evidently completed, Phineas gives the signal to commence the destruction of the great beast.

Ano takes a single calming breath as he sees Phin give the signal to begin.  He delivers five punches in rapid succession all to the same spot, right where the vastadon's neck connects to its head.  He then raises both hands high and brings them down in a powerful strike called 'Drop of the Seven Solitudes'.  He feels the strength of the beast when he strikes, the power of the muscles and the toughness of the skin.

Ano takes 15 on all attacks, so 23 to hit

Klale cuks into the vulnerable leg. Then, he moves so as to stab into the beast's hind end, aiming for the anus.

Ourn fires three bolts in rapid succession at the beast's neck.

The vastidon wakes with a roar of pain.  The sound is deafening [Roll Fortitude vs. DC 19 or be stunned for one round].  It tries to stand, but Klale's attacks have partially incapacitated a leg.  Rather than attacking, it spends the next few moments stumbling around.  An entire store is demolished to the left as the monster careens into it.  Over correcting, the vastidon's bulk crashes into the front of the inn, which is severely stressed, but holds.

Already the wounds close.  It's head swivels, the movement awkward and overpronounced with the neck injury, looking for a target.  Ano manages to move with the thrashing about and stays behind the creature's head and out of its vision.  Klale is nudged here and there by a tail the size of a large tree, but not struck hard enough to do anything.

Enraged and finally able to stand, the monster's eyes come to rest on Ourn.

Toben covers his ears in time, leaving them with a slight ringing, but still functional. With the creatures gaze not on one of the attackers at its feet, Toben decides to slow its charge toward Ourn down.

He holds his staff aloft and says, "Ti zyak temep."

Ourn, seeing the Vastidon's mouth opening in his direction, boldly stares directly into its eyes as a near shock wave of audible fury encompasses him.

Little does the Vastidon know, but Ourn has been told many times by his teachers that he has selective hearing. This instance is no exception to his ability.

Ourn sees that he has the Vastidon's full attention, and decides to play on its animal instincts. He makes a half move (15 feet) and trots backwards down the street (taking care to mind his footing and surroundings), waving his arms and shouting " You'll have to work for your meal! ", in the hopes that the Vastidon will ignore the rest of the party and give chase, if only for long enough for the group to inflict another volley of damage.

He fires a quick and single shot.

The shot goes wide and the reloading mechanism on the repeating crossbow jams with a crunching sound. Ourn looks up at the Vastidon and back down at his jammed weapon. "Well of course... " He shakes his head and starts fighting with the crossbow's stuck inner workings, muttering to himself oaths and curses that are best left unheard.

Ano feels to weight of the vastadon mighty roar pressing in on his conciousness, but keeps his focus and resolve to fight.   He continues striking the vastadon with rapid punches imbued with focused energy.

Klale is unfazed by the roar, and whacks the struck leg again. He then attempts to sever the tail.

Phineas had seen so much since this adventure began, more than any boy his age should.  Much of what he had seen had been wondrous and much had been terrifying.  When the behemoth before him roared, the young rogue gritted his teeth in fierce determination and pushed through the raw pain the vibrations sought to cause him.  They washed over and past and were gone.

With his resolve steeled by successfully shrugging off the vastidon's attack, Phineas pointed his weapon at the creature's head intending to distract or slow its advance toward the newcomer, Ourn.  He let's loose two bolts with calm precision, nothing fancy.  Both strike the monster's head, Toben's magic allowing the bolts to pierce deep and draw blood.

Alas, it is not sufficient to draw the monster from its intended target.

Phineas Highwood takes 10 on attack for a total of 18 2x.
Phineas Highwood rolled 17 with 2d10+4 enchanted crossbow bolt damage.
Phineas Highwood rolled 16 with 4d6+4 sneak attack with enchanted crossbow bolt damage.
Total damage = 33 magical

Klale's work on the leg causes it to drag for a few feet, but other than the raw damage, nothing else seems to have effected the vastidon's inevitable approach to Ourn.  With a surprising burst of speed, the monster lunges forward using its front legs, its mouth open ready to swallow Ourn.

Out of nowhere, a searing, roaring inferno slams into the gaping maw.  A smaller reptilian form - about the size of a very large dog - stands firm between the archer and certain death, shooting a jet of liquid flame.

The vastidon snaps its jaw shut and tucks its head down and away.  The flame scorches any open wounds caused by bolts and Ano's fist, immediately bringing the closing of the wounds to a halt.  Without hesitation, the red reptile leaps onto the vastidon's face.  It rips scales off like corn from a cob.  When the vastidon thrashes and tries to slam head first into a building, the smaller creature darts to its back to continue its denuding of the behemoth.

Without warning, the vastidon flips onto its back, crushing the smaller creature beneath.  At the same time, though, it exposes a softer underbelly.

Ourn doesn't have a clue as to what just happened, but the adrenaline rushing through his veins doesn't give him much time to think on it. He gets the reloading mechanism nearly unstuck. It shouldn't be long now before he can fire it again.

Klale rushes toward the underbelly and plunges his sword into, possibly into or by the belly button. He seesaws the sword, trying to make an X cut.

Time seems to slow down as the scene unfolds, and Ourn is nearly swallowed whole. Kornari's heroic effort to stop his untimely death snaps him back to reality.

"Ourn, that was Kornari. Get out of there while it's distracted!"

He quickly looks for any sign that Kornari made a clean get away from the beast flipping over. Seeing no signs of his new mentor, and completely unconvinced anything could survive being crushed under that amount of weight, he decides to try and cripple the beast even further.

Raising his staff, he shouts "Vessa wer toma de sia irlym"

Seeing the dragon whelp disappear under the enormous mass of the vastidon, Ano sets himself for a second.  His face is calm, expressionless. In his mind's eye, a crystal door, the first of four, opens wide and his body is flooded with energy.  His body is surrounded by a fiercely flickering shimmering of red energy.  The flickering grows orange and intensifies.  Then it erupts into a golden yellow.

With an extended draw back, the monk slowly speaks the whelp's name.  It is not a yell, but the sound carries throughout the area with a deep force inexplicable as mere vibration of the air.  "KOR! NAR! I!"  On the last syllable, Ano strikes forward with a single punch using all of his Maiar-blessed speed.  To those viewing him, its as if he was drawn back and in the next instant he was fully extended into a punch against the vastidon's ribs.

In the next instant, the monster's body is thrown wholesale into three buildings across from Ano.  The buildings are demolished immediately and throw up a cloud of dust that washes over the battlefield.

23:16, Today: Eru, on behalf of Ano, rolled 75 using 7d8+28.
Vastidon was knocked back 30', but only took 1 DMG from the non-magical source of damage (the buildings).

Utterly dazed and seriously wounded, the vastidon does not get up easily.  Soon, the combined focus of the party is able to put it down for good, with Klale able to severe its head...just to be sure and fire is applied from one of the buildings that caught fire during Kornari's attack to the whole body to discourage any lingering regeneration.  The smell is disgusting.

There is a weak groan from the pit that is the vastidon's body imprint where it slammed Kornari into the earth.

SARIS! Klale yells. KORNARI NEEDS YOU! He runs over toward where he thinks Kornari is babbling Water...maybe Kornari needs water....

Ourn sinks to his knees for a moment, allowing the fear and adreneline to pass. For the moment, he is completely unsure of how to react.

As the dust settles, Toben scans the area for Kornari. Klale's shout grabs his attention, still under the effects of great haste, he rushes over to the recess to find Kornari curled up in a ball and unresponsive.

Without moving him too much, Toben quickly tries to access his condition. The scales make it hard to find a pulse, so he places his hand just over his nostrils to feel for any sign of breath. Unsatisfied with any results, he places his head on Kornari's chest to listen for any signs of life.

Panic starts to set in...

After gaping at the goings-on between Ano and the Vastidon for a few moments, Phineas shuts his mouth with a snap and races over to join Toben by Kornari's fallen form, eager to help, but at a loss for the moment as to a further course of action.

After a few moments, more than enough for the healer to respond, there is nothing.

However, the night air is growing warmer and a mist is gathering throughout the town.

Ourn stands up from his crouch, and scans the area around them. He quickly makes his way over to Toben.

" Something doesn't bode well. The air, all around us.. it feels.. off. Saris would not idly ignore your pleas for help as well. I feel that we cannot afford much more time spent in this location. Gather our companions, we should make haste to find Saris and begone from open ground. I have a sick feeling in my gut, that we're being stalked. "

When there is no reply from Saris, Ano moves quickly, mustering as much speed ad he can to make his way over to the building that she had originally hidden in.  He gives the entire area a quick search for anything out of the ordinary.

Klale sheathes his sword and asks Phineas to carry his shield (that's laying down nearby). He picks up Kornari (its body?) and goes after Ano.

Toben nods silently, and follows the rest of the group to the building Saris was last seen entering.

Ourn scans the area  as well as he makes his way back to the inn with the rest of the group. He is deeply washed with regret for Kornari. He feels that had he not had the error in the manner he did, the events that transpired may have not went in the direction they did. He vows that he will take greater care with his actions and redeem himself, especially to honor the potential sacrifice  that Kornari has made.

He arrives shortly after at the inn, and addresses the party. " Is she here? "

Saris is indeed in the building.  She has found a comfortable chair and appears to be sleeping in it.  When the group enters, she does not stir.  Her breathing is even and her body otherwise still.

There is a large pallet in the back room for perhaps a large dog or perhaps naps for the shop keeper.  Kornari might be comfortable there if he still lives.  It's hard to tell at this point as his body is limp and heavy.  There is no rise and fall of breathing and a heartbeat is impossible to feel through the scales even if one did know where to check for such a thing.

Outside the wind picks up and one of the severely damaged buildings finishes its collapse with a loud crash.  The mist only intensifies.

Toben's movements are quick and determined as he enters the building. "Phineas, scout the area and see if you can find Xar. Ano, see if you can rouse Saris." He starts to move to the back of the building. "Ourn, this weather seems very mysterious. Can you keep a lookout for us? Klale, bring Kornari back here with me. There may be something I can do for him."

Toben kneels down beside the mat and signals Klale that he is ready.

Ourn nods and quickly heads upstairs to get a good vantage point. He warily eyes the surrounding streets looking for any signs of suspicious activity or movement.

After toting Klale's shield to the building where Saris sits somnolent, Phineas nods gravely to Toben's suggestion and slips out, scouring around for Xar, while also keeping his eyes open for any hints as to what might be causing the peculiar, foreboding atmosphere.

Klale sets Kornari down but says I think we should get out of here...seek higher ground.

Ano walks over to where Saris is and gently shakes her shoulder.  You must awaken, we are in dire need, and danger is upon us."

Saris's eyes snap open at Ano's touch.  They glow golden.

"He is here."

Toben, while crouched over Kornari, suddenly loses focus and begins to topple over as if some unseen force shoved him to the ground. He tries to stand, but the dizziness sends him careening right back to the floor.

With his head in his hands, he looks up at Klale with a dumbfounded look on his face. "What's happening out there?", he manages to blurt out before turning to the side and emptying his stomach.

Saris, if you will, see to Kornari. Does this "he" feel the bite of steel?

Ano looks shocked at Saris as she speaks, and he can feel his body turn sluggish.  He looks hard into the golden eyes and asks "You mean the Dark Star don't you?"
With a feeling of dread he turns back to the others and fights his own body to make his way over to Toben and try to help him stand.

Saris nods with much trepidation evident on her face to Ano.  Then she sets her jaw and turns to Klale.  "Yes."

After a brief look over at Kornari, she closes her eyes again and rests her head against the wall.

Ourn continues to try and scout from the upper level of the inn, but the thickness of the unnatural fog makes for poor visibility. The fog has managed to creep up to the second story window sills. It's almost as if it sentiently knows Ourn is on look out, and intentionally seeks to deny him his sight.

Ourn, we should retrieve the crossbow.

Ourn turns around from his post at the window to Klale.

"Oh, actually it's right over there, on the end table. I kind of stopped trying to un-jam it what with running for my life. The push rod linked to the little silver gear on the reloader is cocked to the side. Maybe you'll have better luck man handling it than I did... "

Ourn looks down at his feet for a moment.

I really hope that little dragon is ok. I was actually looking forward to being able to meet and see him. I've never had much exposure to creatures of a magical variety. Honestly, between you and I Klale, I blame myself for his harm. If I hadn't been a fool showing out... maybe he'd be in fairer condition"

Doubt you could predict the rollover Klale comments as he goes over to check whether he can fix the crossbow.

"I suppose that's true."

Ourn uses his hand to try and waft some of the mist from the window, but to no avail. He can barely make out the streets below now, and decides to close the window to prevent the mists from creeping into the room.

" I can't see a thing out there from up here. We should head back down to check with the others. I'm sure Toben or Saris might have some idea as to the unnatural causes for the foul weather we're having. "

Toben makes it to his feet, albeit with Ano's assistance. He smiles weakly in appreciation.

"I can assure you there is nothing natural about this storm, if what has come over Saris and I is any indication. My only guess is that this dark star brings with him some sort of aura that's interfering with her... our abilities."

He looks over to Klale and Ourn. "The enchantments on your weapons ought to hold well enough for a few more hours, although I'm not sure how much use I'll be in this fight." He grabs his head with both hands. "I just can't keep my head from spinning. It's like something is taking my thoughts and jumbling up every other word."

The corner of Ourn's mouth twitches up into a half smile, and his tone is wry.

" Magically imbued weapons or not, lacking our own magic users doesn't stack well against a potential fight with a being that, to the best of my abilities to describe, is made of pure hate and evil. Here's to hoping the big guy still feels up to swinging his sword, the little stabby one feels like.. well, stabbing stuff, and speed incarnate here is still able to run circles around this thing and punch it into oblivion. As for myself, I'll do my very best to shoot strait and not gum up the works again, while you and our sleeping madame rest up from what ails you. Now then, the only real question is whether we go out to meet him.. her? It. Or do we wait here for the grand entrance? I'd imagine that being the supernatural phenomena it is, if I gathered the details accurately, that it will be able to find us, and more importantly Saris, without many troubles."

He turns and faces the rest of the group that's present, trying to maintain his semi-positive demeanor, despite the growing knot of pure anxiety in his gut.

" What say the rest of you, my fellows? Oh, and where has the shadowy gentleman gotten off to?"

It may be the shadowy gentleman, possessed, that we face. Anyway, if we stay here, I suggest we play weaker and more muddled than we are. Maybe induce the foe to gloat. Were it not for Kornari, I'd suggest moving out.

After helping Toben up Ano moves to the front door.  "I'll go and get Phin, I think we need to leave quickly.  We can't take the chance of the dark star getting a hold of Saris"
Ano takes of into the town searching for Phin.

A minute later, Ano bursts into the building with his enhanced speed, and sets a peaked-looking Phineas.

" What in the world got a hold of the kid?!"

Toben, now sitting in a chair, looks up as Ano bursts into the room. "Everything alright?"

He stares blankly at the two. "No sign of Xar?"

Ano shakes his head 'no'.  "He is in the city.  The Dark Star went after Phin and almost had him too.  He seems powerful and I think we need to leave now."

Toben shakes his head. "I'm not sure running will help. We are as much sitting ducks here as we are trying to travel with two incapacitated people."

He thinks for a moment and sighs heavily. "If we are going to run. I say we head back to the mountain. Ceven may be able to help us."

Ourn turns to Toben.

" Furthermore, if running is the plan, we should be off without delay. We have the two of you who are adled by the dark star, Phin looks like death, and I'd imagine Klale will need to carry Kornari. That's four out of eight who'll have a rather tough time defending the group. We're not at our full capacity, and I fear that stacks the odds heavily against us. Not to mention Xar is missing, but I'd wager he can take care of himself for now."

Ourn doesn't wait for a response, and begins cinching down the belts on his gear.

" I'll aid Saris until she can carry her own. Klale can grab Kornari, Ano can assist Phin. Toben, are you able to be up and about of your own accord until we can be free of this fiend's aura?"

"Come out, come out, wherever you are."  The voice drifts in like the mist from just outside the store where you are all making plans.  "I only want Nestael.  The rest of you may leave, no harm, no foul."

Toben stands from his chair. "Sounds like we may already be too late."

He looks over to Ourn. "My physical strength isn't a problem. It's my mind... everything just seems scattered. Hard to think without losing my direction."

He grabs his staff. "Whether we run or fight, whatever that thing is outside, it can't take Nestael." Taking a moment to concentrate before speaking again, he continues. "I can't guarantee I'll be much help, but I'll do the best I can."

He heads toward the door, and in a quiet voice issues his final request. "There is a hidden passage in the mountains to the west. It leads to the dwarves and to her brother, Ceven. If we get separated for whatever reason, that is where we need to get her."

Klale puts his fingers to his lips and goes over to stand at the wall by the door. He grips his sword with both hands.

Ourn takes a good look at Toben. This young man, who looks to be barely past the threshold into adulthood has seen much in his days, what with leading a group of steel hearted individuals into the very bowels of the abyss several times over. Ourn admires his spirit and tenacity. He walks over to Toben and places a hand on his shoulder.

" That's a very bold request you make of us my friend. You presume that we'll part ways with you if the tides turn against us. I'm sorry, but I can't allow that. Not when you have the gifts of the mind that you do. Certainly not when you seem to be our key to restoring this world, what with your abilities to understand these fallen stars and their ways."

Ourn's eye brows raise as he tilts his head down and makes full eye contact with Toben.

" If the battle goes south, you lead these people out and to safety. With my enhanced agility, the big nasty beyond the door will have to be able to touch me before he can hurt me. Besides... if he attacks my mind, well, I have jelly for a brains, so good luck to him. You'll be in no mental state with him addling your mind to provide a proper resistance and buy the rest enough time to flee. Allow me to shoulder your burden for a while, and to purchase the group time while it is still available."

He sees Klale press his finger to his lips, and ceases speaking.

"My patience is not limitless and it nears its end.  Send Nestael out and you may leave.  If I come in there, you all die."  The voice began pleasant enough, given the circumstances, but toward the end, the menace was almost a physical blow.

Phineas shakes off a bit of his recent experience and speaks quickly to the group.

"Ano, thank you for your help. Your speed is, I fear, the only thing that kept me from worse trouble. I am in your debt."

"That thing, whatever it is (for it is surely not what it appears) is fast, powerful, and, I have no doubt, deadly. He will be a formidable foe, at least as much mentally as physically. But the only options he seems to be leaving us are to give him the Star or to pit all of our might and main against him. I could not, in good conscience, leave her to the devices of so fell a beast. It's a choice that isn't a choice, if we call ourselves men." (This seems a bit overblown for a lad of his age, but the others don't smirk too much at it.)

"Besides," he adds with a grin, "we're too pretty to die." Phin climbs into the rafters, hoping to catch the dark star unawares should the need arise.

Saris whispers in a voice barely heard but for the silence Klale called for.  "_{He is only one.}"

Ourn breaks his gaze from Toben, and calmly walks over to the door. He opens it just enough to let himself out, and closes it quietly behind him. He lets his hand lazily rest on the hilt of his sword and turns to face the dark star. He meets the cold stare of a man that may as well have been chiseled out of fine marble, placed in an elegant garden somewhere. He's a head taller than Ourn and devilishly handsome. He stands there barefoot and shirtless. For a brief second, Ourn actually envies the man's completely perfect physique.

" My my. You certainly aren't what I expected. Here I was thinking you'd be some grotesque monster. But just look at you. You workout, don't you? I bet you're a real lady killer eh? "

  "Prolific."    There is a woosh of air, then the Dark Star growls, "That's not possible!"

Ourn now wears the smirk.

" Surely you of all creatures wouldn't insult us both by claiming things are impossible? "

Ourn calmly reaches over with his main hand and grips his longsword.

" I would ask you to reconsider your position on this matter, but I suppose you and I already know what your answer will be. So, to the death then?"

With that, Ourn sweeps his right leg back standing himself sideways, while drawing his longsword. He holds his buckler up on his left forearm in front of him, with his sword arched over his head and pointed forward. " Let's dance, pretty boy "

Klale shrugs and follows Ourn out. He's ready too...but then Ourn issues his challenge.

As Klale exists the building to assist Ourn, Toben tries to usher Saris to the back room. The weight of the armored dwarf catches him off guard and resorts to dragging her. From behind, he hooks his arms under hers and begins to pull her to the back room, heels dragging on the floor.

He sets her down on the pallet next to Kornari and whispers quietly to her, "I'd like to get as much distance between you and it as possible, in case we need to make a hasty get-away."

Outside, the battle is almost amusing.  The pretty man who is without a doubt the Dark Star, Basarshakath, attempts to hit Ourn with futile intent.  He fully ignores Klale, enraged by his utter lack of success in landing a blow.

Ourn, on the other hand, is able to dance like a master.  Though no single strike is powerful or particularly disabling, they land consistently.  The first few wounds have healed, but the constant slashing takes its toll and blood trickles from the many wounds like rivulets of red sweat.


Then Ourn stumbles and drops his sword.  Not wasting the opening, Basarshakath's body erupts with muscles three sizes too big.  He slams a meaty fist into Ourn's cheek spraying blood and teeth all over the front porch of the store.  Ourn is lifted bodily from the ground and slams first into the window then face front into the boards of the porch.  [20 DMG total]


Basarshakath lifts both hands above his head, together in a single, mighty fist, rearing back to crash down on Ourn with all of his enhanced strength in a final, killing blow.

Klale charges, shoulders lowered aiming for the middle, one arm ready to wrap around a waist, his other arm (muscles firm)bent so the hand (a bit behind the hip) holds his sword straight out.

(Left middle, right...something should connect.)

Klale crashes into the Dark Star like a mûmakil (oliphaunt).  There is an audible oomph as the two crash into the ground off the porch.  They both roll to their feet.  Still bulked beyond normal, Basarshakath rears back and throws a right-hand punch...

...which Klale catches in his free left hand.

Basarshakath's eyes grow wide.  "NESTAEL!"  He growls his frustration.

Toben bursts in from the back room. With barely enough time to blurt out, "Ano, Phin, stand down...", he rushes out the front door.

He exits the building to find Ourn lying on the ground, and Klale sparring with Basarshakath. Without delay, he shouts "Klale, cover me!", and darts to Ourn's side with all the speed he can muster. Toben slides to the ground in what looks like a tripping maneuver, but instead rolls to cover Ourn, hoping the sheer momentum is enough to push the two out of the melee.

Ano looks over at Phin and shrugs slightly as Toben rushes out the door.  He stays alert and ready to stop the dark star from making it though the door way.

[Becasue this is complicated, I'm doing it as a list of an attempted action. I'm assuming Klale has done some wrestling, village lads and all. The actions are virtually simultaneous.]
Klale grasps the hand and pulls at forward enough.
He lowers his other shoulder and thrusts his other hand across his body.
The leg under that hand goes halfway across the body in a cross step.
His other hand grasps Basarshakath's held arm near the armpit.
He pivots with the leg under the holding hand while using his armpit grasping hand and arm, his body torque, and the moving leg to execute a back drop.
If all that is successful, Klale will twist to dislocate a shoulder or do worse damage.

Ourn sits up and prepars to get back on his feet. His entire body aches. His head is pounding, and his vision is blurry. He leans over and spits a large clot of blood and saliva onto the ground. The side of his face is almost numb, and he can feel the absense of multiple teeth from the molars in the back to the front side of his mouth. He realizes its Toben hovering over him, and manages a weak and pitiful smile... or whats left of one.

" Stand down eh?". He spits again as his mouth rapidly fills back up with blood. His speech is slow and slightly slurred. " But I had him right where I wanted em'. You figure something new out?" Ourn's head bobs down for a brief second as he nearly passes out. He struggles to try and put his feet underneath him, but shakily manages. He places a hand on Toben's shoulder for support.

Phineas grins and makes a mildly rude gesture at Toben's retreating back, but retains his post in the rafters, waiting to see how the noises outside resolve.

Toben gives one quick, sharp nod in response to Ourn. In a way most uncharacteristic for Toben, says "We were foolish to think we could best one as powerful as this."

He urges Ourn forward, inside the building. "Quickly, inside. You need to regain your senses."

Toben and Ourn coming stumbling back in to the building, and Toben plops the dazed man into a chair. He looks to the others and quietly says, "I have an idea..."

"And I have a headache.."

Ourn lets his head slightly droop back and stares are the ceiling, wishing the room would stop its spinning. He tries to direct his focus on Toben's voice.

The contortions Klale puts Basarshakath through end with a loud 'pop'.  The Dark Maiar screams in pain and anger.

[Any action Klale can take?]

20:13, Today: Klale Tsolo rolled 3 using 1d20+2.  TDDR.

Toben is momentarily distracted by the sound of a limb being dislocated. The Dark Maiar's scream suggests that it was not Klale's limb, and he resumes the delivery of his revelation.

"Saris appears to be under duress, and it's affecting her ability to maintain our blessings. As such, she can only maintain one at a time. That stumble you had Ourn wasn't a mere coincidence." Toben glances over at Ourn, sheepishly. "Sorry for that, by the way." Without pause, he continues. "Our enemy doesn't appear to be wise to our handicap, and we need to keep it that way. Sending a champion out one at a doesn't seem wise and will likely only raise his suspicion. So, we'll all need to be active players in this fight, but that leaves us with the problem of who Saris focuses on."

"She seems to be able to shift her focus very quickly. Instantly almost, but in order to do that she needs to know who. We need to know where he'll strike before it happens. Someone who knows what their enemies next move is, even before he knows it himself." His gaze falls to Ano. "Ano, I believe your discipline and intense training will fit this role perfectly, but we need to be smart about it. If you were to call out the name of who he is about to attack, and if timed correctly, Saris could switch her focus to that person. Subtlety will be our ally here, otherwise we might tip him off. So shouting "Saris, focus on Phin!" would be a bad idea, but something like "Phin, watch that right hook!" might slip by him without a second thought but signal Saris to switch."

Having divulged his plan, he makes a move to the back room. "I'll coordinate this with Saris so that she knows to listen for your command, Ano."

In reply to Toben Ironsprings (msg # 185):

Phineas swings down from the rafters, pulls out his dagger, and readies himself by the door. Looking sideways at Ano, he cracks "You'll have to show me how to do that dragon punch one of these days."

Ourn rights his head, but is in no mood for conversation at the moment. He squints his eyes through the pain in his head and mouth. He looks around for a moment, to try and spy where Klale may have left the crossbow he was unjamming. He feels down at his side as well and realizes his long sword is still laying out in the street. Ourn frowns and sighs, as he hoists himself up from the chair to begin looking for the repeater.

The battle continues outside without observation.  On occasion there is the smack of a solid punch, landed by whom on whom is unknown at this point.

Feeling his speed returning Ano looks over at the others "It sounds like a good plan. We best get to it then."

With a burst of speed Ano bursts out the door and charges the dark star.  He lashes out with punches at the torso and head, trying to keep the focus on himself now that Klale has lost his blessing.

The Dark Star attempts to parry two of the blows, his eyes wide in surprise at Ano.  He is fast, but not nearly as precise as the monk.  He tries to hit back, but simply isn't fast enough to do more than inconsequential damage with a single landed blow.  What pain is felt by Ano quickly fades, indicating that the regeneration effect comes along with the other enhancemwnts.

But you're it Klale replies, hoping for a moment's distraction.

As Basarshakath turns his attention to Ano, Klale attempts to pick up his sword.

Remembering that he generally gets the worst of hand-to-hand scraps, Phin switches to the crossbow. With a shrug and inchoate battle cry that sounds something like "yo lo", Phin bursts through the door and joins the fray.

Toben comes in walking from the back room. For a brief moment he looks semi-transparent, but his form solidifies quickly.

Shaking his head and cursing under his breath, he rejoins the rest of the group in the front room.

19:32, Today: Toben Ironsprings rolled 9 using 1d20+6.  spellcraft check (-10 modifier).
Toben fails..

The bolt grazes Basarshakath who doesn't seem to notice the crimson line on his arm.

Klale manages to retrieve his sword as Ano and the Dark Star maneuver around.  It seems the focus of Basarshakath is wholly on the monk at the moment, relying heavily on the enhanced speed to dodge any incidental attacks.  He feints a couple of times at Ano, but saves his attacks to attempt to parry the Monks more numerous blows.  The concentration and movement leaves his right, back side open the Klale who is within striking distance.

Klale takes a swing and perhaps effects a slice...but maybe not.

23:54, Today: Klale Tsolo rolled 7 using 1d10+5.  Damage.

23:53, Today: Klale Tsolo rolled 18 using 1d20+11.  To Hit.

February's been a bad month for dice rolling in all my games. Normally I'd take a 15, but I felt a roll was appropriate, and hope (until death do us part) spring eternal. Besides, I know the Dice Roller is fair.

Ano try to keep the enemy focused on himself as he calls out, hoping Saris will take his meaning.  "Hey Toben I thought this guy would be stronger than this"

Ourn, who has retrieved the crossbow which Klale thankfully fixed, has it loaded and shuffles to the door. He opens the door and props up against the door frame while taking a knee. He knows that in his current condition entering into the melee is a death sentence; one that he was fully prepared to carry out until being pummeled gave him the reality check he needed. Ourn steadies his breathing and prepares to be the final barrier between the dark star and Saris if it comes to it. He trains the sights of the crossbow on his enemy, and readies an attack. He'll unleash a full 3 shot volley when his turn for getting his dexterity blessing returns.

Ourn takes 10 on each attack, with his bonus (when he gets it), netting a 23 per shot.

Klale's sword slices across Basarshakath's back, and a crimson spray explodes outward.  Gritting his teeth, the Dark Star uses his incredible speed to once again place Ano between himself and the big fighter [enough movement to only count as a 5' step for someone at the enhanced speed].

When Ano tosses out his taunt, he replies, "Strength isn't everything."  When Ano fails to attack, Basarshakath goes all out with his speed.  The first two attacks come in as a blur to all but Ano, who easily deflects.  The third kick misses entirely, and the fourth strike overextends him enough that he nearly stumbles and definitely leaves himself to attacks of opportunity from Klale and Ano.

Klake, perhaps realizing the even a blur has a center, slashes at that center with effect.

As Basarshakath misses his last attack, Ano takes the opportunity to strike.  He lets Klale blade slide past him by twisting his body and then brings his right hand down in an over the head punch.

Hit after hit slams the Dark Star's body.  Each wound begins to close after it is made, but slower with every new one given.  With a screech of frustration, Basarshakath darts away from his assailants.  He slides to a halt in the dust of the town, the clouds and night sky nearly concealing him.  His body ripples and there is a subtle change its its contours.  The wounds remain, still slowly healing as time passes.

The first two bolts slam into Basarshakath's body, staggering him, but by the third shot, the shifting is complete and he snatches the bolt out of the air.  He searches the field for a moment, his eyes coming to rest on Ourn.  "Back for more?  You're going to have to to better than that."  He starts walking toward the shooter in a somewhat roundabout fashion, cognizant of but not too worried about Klale and Ano.

Ourn let's the remaining two bolts in the repeater fly. The first is swatted away, but with Ourn's enhanced speed, the second bolt is only a fraction of a second behind the first, and scores a hit.

Klale moves to get between Basarshakath and Ourn.

Ano move behind Basarshakath and makes an attack hoping to draw his attention away.  He aims a punch, that almost seems slow now, towards the shoulder that Klale had attacked earlier.

Toben steps out of the doorway, as to not be in the path of Basarshakath and Ourn. Staff in hand, he says "It doesn't have to be like this, Maia. It's not too late to break from the path you're on and do the right thing."

Easily dodging anything coming at him, Basarshakath actually pauses at Toben's words.  "Seriously?  You are trying to 'save' me?"  His guffaws are loud enough not to be swallowed immediately by the dense mist.  He bends over at the waist holding it and he slaps his knee.  "Oh, Melkor.  I'm dying here."  He pretends to struggle to catch his breath.  "I...I can't.  I can't breathe!"  His laughing starts all over again.

Ourn looks at Basarshakath laughing at Toben's words.
" He's right, you know? You can pretend my friend here doesn't make sense all you want, but deep down in your very core, you know it to be true. You aren't the first evil to threaten this world of ours. You wont be the last. No one ever remembers the defeated fiends; only the heros. The do gooders. Those who stand in the light. Even if you did succeed... what's the point? There's no power in enslaving or killing lands full of sick and poor people. Your fight was pointless before you ever started it."

The Dark Star's laughter cuts off abruptly, like the life of someone whose neck he snapped.  He glares daggers at Ourn.  "You are a fool to think there is supposed to be a point."  With that, he breaks into a sprint towards the crossbowman, easily dodging any attacks that come his way.

Completely unarmed, and with no time to reload, Ourn pops up to his feet, ready to slug Basarshakath in the mouth. He knows it will do little good, but is absolutely determined that if he's to die, it won't be without a fight. If Basarshakath is triumphant this day, he will long remember the mere mortal who harrowed him at every chance.

The Dark Star manages to whirl and writhe through everything thrown at him.  Klale comes somewhat close to a hit, but only relatively speaking.  The Maiar feints then spins passed the big fighter like he is standing still.  Then he is at Ourn.

His first two strikes are precise, calculated, and come from strange angles.  Yet nothing lands.  Ourn moves as if Basarshakath is a child trying to hit his dad in play.

Kalale essays a teantatie swing (with the equivalent of an F+).

Rolled a 3 to hit.

Feeling more and more desperate, Ano pulls out the ivory fang, praying that it might have some effect on the elusive foe.  He takes the fang and tries to jab it at Basarshakath's torso and neck.

Phin curses briefly under his breath, which has equal effect on his foe as did his shot. He reloads while hurling a bit of invective at the party's opponent in hopes of distracting him.

"Wow, Basarshakath, I'd have thought you'd be able to at least make contact with an injured do-gooder. I guess they don't make dark stars like they used to. Or were you the runt of the litter, a sad disappointment to your mother? I guess I'd send out the underachievers and cannon fodder first as well."

Ourn ducks and dodges Basarshakath, taking verbal jabs at him more often than physical ones. " I guess you're right", Ourn leans back to avoid a punch. " This really doesn't have a point". Now he ducks to avoid a haymaker. " Even children aren't afraid of you", he says with a grin, showing off his newly regrown teeth.

Ourn knows his time holding on to his blessing is nearing an end, and hopes desperately that whoever catches the blessing next can intervene before he takes another world shattering punch to the face

Toben takes a couple steps back to avoid any stray attacks and continues to observe the circumstances around the dark star's shifting form.

"Listen to reason, before your life becomes forfeit. It's not too late."

Basarshakath's eyes narrow.  He ignores Ano's feeble attempts to strike him, feints toward Ourn, then whips around toward Phineas.  "Your mouth is going to get you into trouble one day, boy."  The only thing that saves the youth from an immediate trouncing is that he is not near the others, who have all closed around the Dark Star.  Dodging and whirling past any attacks, the Dark Star moves full out for Phineas.

A moment of pure clarity washes over Toben, and he springs into action. In a whirl of silent flourishes with his staff, he attempts to hinder his charge toward Phineas.

Once clear of Basarshakath, Ourn immediately drops back down to a knee and loads the last 5 round magazine of bolts he has remaining. As he loads, he glances around and eyes his long sword laying in the street a short sprint away. He prepares to make a quick dash for the sword once his bow loading task is complete, providing Basarshakath's attention isn't focused in Ourn's direction.

Basarshakath slows comically as he moves toward Phineas for a few more steps.  He comes to a stop and looks down at his hands then up and around.  He frowns and then he begins to change growing leaner back to the speed form, but the change is slow, pronounced and awkward.

Ano calls quickly into the back of the building "Saris I could use some of your assistance in ejecting this filth from the premises" With that said Ano starts to gather his Kai,  ready to release the attack if the blessing returns.  The red energy flairs KOR, there is another burst of orange energy NAR, and with a final blast of yellow energy from his body Ano shouts I.  He snaps his cocked arm forward striking out at the dark star whether or not the blessing has returned.

The blast from Ano's strike hits the slow moving Maiar full on, a firestorm of energy ripping through his body.  Only the spell from Toben keeps him from getting thrown back into a building at full speed to take even more damage.  He is, however, slowly flying through the air and completely vulnerable as he continues his transformation.

Klale wastes no time at taking this opportunity. He Due to Basarshakath's position, his first slice is backhanded and upward; however, on his downstroke (if any), he able to put more force into his blow, possibly severing part of a leg.

Klale's attacks lift the Dark Star higher into the air before slamming him into the ground with a thud.  For the first time, Basarshakath appears to be significantly wounded.  However, he is able to rise and continue at what appears to be normal speed toward Phineas, though it still looks like he is running through syrup to so do with his enhanced speed.

The maiar's attacks are close, but the agile youth is able to dodge both, which serves to further frustrate Basarshakath.

"What are you people!?"

"You're a lousy dark star, and a lousy prophet. My mouth has *already* gotten me in trouble more times than I can count!"

He looses the bolt at short range, but as usual, his mouth is a far better weapon than anything in his hands.

Having reloaded his crossbow, Ourn takes to his feet and runs out into the street, grabs his sword, and sheaths it.

Klale again has an opportunity to attack and does so with vigor.

Toben attempts to take advantage of the Maia's exposed position, with or without his blessing in full focus. He shouts "Inloilfreyi di edar". Beads of sweat rolls down his brow as the expenditure of energy almost breaks him.

Three sharp flourishes of his staff release tiny earthen shards that go sailing at his victim. One missile flies wide, but two strike true, slamming into his lower legs.

Ano moves forward, just behind Toben stone shards, and attacks.  He thrusts both fists forward towards the chest of Basarshakath.

As the damage takes its toll, Basarshakath stumbles, blood pouring from numerous wounds.  However, he is able to reach Phineas.  He swipes for the youth, but misses completely.  In frustration he screams at the sky.  "Jiak liwo OLK be juldone! MELKOR, AUKUKIUKAV ALNEJ!"

The words themselves are painful to hear, a guttural, almost subvocal language in a register so low it is felt more than heard.  [All take 1 DMG]  Tendrils of blood red, deep violet, and sickly green energy erupt from the ground to engulf the Dark Maiar.  He screams, but it is uncertain if it is in exultation or agony.

Toben raises his staff defensively for a moment as the unknown 'magic' envelopes the Dark Maiar. The realization of what he believes to be happening, quickly sets him into motion. "Dark blessing!", he shouts. "Ready yourselves..."

His mind races as to what sort of being could bless a Maia, he figures striking quickly before it can act might help keep the playing ground level. He grips his staff tightly, whispers "Majak udoka wer tiichir di qeelak", and strikes the butt of the staff firmly upon the ground. A wave of invisible energy pulses out from him and washes over his allies.

The spell is released, and Toben stumbles to a knee as the expenditure of energy continues to take its toll. With his remaining strength, he hoists himself up with his staff. "Let him have it", he says plainly.

Toben casts Haste on the party.

[I think I have the stats right. Klale can attack twice, taking a 15+5 for a 20...and 2 for 22 (It may take a 22 to be...I hope...sure to hit.). His damage per attack is 1d10+1 and +4 for strength...and 2 for enchantment.]

Klale has been around bad sounds before [introductory battle, for instance]. He feels himself again; again, something he's become used to. So...he continues to whack away as best he can...particularly trying to sever a limb—or even a neck.

Ourn, not wanting to waste shots, takes a knee and readies 3 attacks for when he receives the blessing again.

Ano feels the energy of Toben's spell flow through him, the speed he feels is not as great as the blessing, but any edge would help. He charges in and strikes out at Basarshakath with hands open, thrusting the points of his fingers at weak joints and nerves hoping to lock his body up.

If he can, Ano will make all three attacks, stunning fist attack, DC 15 to avoid being stunned for one round.  If not then he will make at lest on of the attacks a stunning fist.  I'm not quite sure how that works.

When the torrent of dark energy fades and the dust settles, the group attacks with renewed vigor and great speed under Toben's spell.  The Maiar bleeds afresh from the hail of damage.  Ano gets in a strike that seems to stun the Maiar, a good thing, too, seeing what he has become.

Basarshakath has become a beast of a man.  Bulky before when in strength mode, now his skin is torn in multiple places, unable to contain the writhing, cords of purple strength.  His teeth have grown, four of them protruding slightly as fangs, a pair from above and below.  His eyes are completely bloodshot and the pupils fully dilated in a combination of black and red that makes him look rabid.  Once a brilliant platinum blonde, his hair is blood red and half way down his back in a shaggy mane.

The Dark Maiar grits his teeth in frustration at not being able to move, an act that draws blood from his lips from the newly formed fangs.

Klale gets in two whacks, but less effectively then he'd like. Still, every little is a gain.*

He watches intently to see if the spell takes hold.

Phineas works to reload the crossbow, but finds that something in the mechanism has gone awry. He concentrates on putting distance between himself and the dark star while trying to get the weapon back into working order.

Ano presses with his attack again trying not to think about what the dark star's new form could do to anyone of them.  He jabs with his fists in quick succession at the opponents body and follows up with a Kick directed at his face.

Ano take 15 on 3 flurry of blows attacks.  22 to hit with each.

Klale and Ano draw further blood, easily striking the immobile force of nature before them.  Then Toben casts his spell and a beam of brown-colored energy leaps from his hands to the body of the Dark Star...

...only to be deflected.  It strikes Phineas who shrinks and keeps shrinking until he can't be seen any more.

Basarshakath laughs maniacally as he shrugs of Ano's stunning effects.  He reaches down and scoops up something, opens his mouth wide and pops his face with his hand as if putting something in his mouth.  The teeth clack shut and he swallows.  Then he turns to Toben and grins evilly.  "Thanks.  A little appetizer before the main course."

This has been a horrible dice-roiling month for me; I'm 0 for February.

A look of horror washes over Toben's face. "Phin!!"

Horror turns to anger. Anger turns to determination. An idea forms, and is quickly executed. "Waves di netiaj wash acht udoka." He stamps his staff on ground and a pulse of energy is sent out over his allies.

With his staff still firmly planted on the ground, Toben takes a knee. "Nestael, I pray to you. May your gentle embrace protect Phineas from what I'm about to do."

He closes his eyes, and with a thought, dismisses the shrinking spell.


Toben casts Lesser Vigor, Mass upon the group.
Those effected will regenerated 1 hp per round for the next 15 rounds. It probably doesn't stack with Nestaels blessing, but it'll heal those who she isn't focusing on.

" Kid? KIIID!! Ourn lowers his crossbow, afraid that a bolt may puncture the dark star and harm Phin. He stands and draws his sword and starts walking towards the dark star. You miserable piece of gutter trash! " Ourn yells as he walks. " You can't manage to defeat mortal men, so you instead kill a mere boy?! ". He stands several paces from Basarshakath. " Turn and face me, you weak and pathetic shadow. Turn and face me so that I can finish what I started with you! "

Moving at what amounts to normal speed for a warrior, Basarshakath turns to face Ourn as the next closest easy target.  Though Klale and Ano continue to destroy the surface of the monster, it does not seem to affect his actions too much.  By sheer mass, he brushes past Ano, taking a couple of punches and a slice of opportunity as punishment for his disregard from Ano and Klale.  He meets Ourn in front of the building where Saris rests inside.  There, he reaches down and grabs the archer by his shoulders, pinning them with hands that nearly meet behind and in front of Ourn's torso.  "I will rip you limb from URGHK-"

Basarshakath stumbles forward, Ourn in hand, as a heavy weight slams into his back.  Xar has dropped out of the mist and shadows of the night onto the Dark Star's back.  Two long knives protrude from out of his chest from inside, driven all the way through from the back.  The attack causes Basarshakath to drop Ourn and reach for the attacker, but Xar lets go and drops to the ground into a crouch, another knife already in hand.

Glad to see Xar, Ano's resolve felt renewed as he begins his attacks again.  He throws three heavy punches at the enemies torso, aiming to hit as close to the dagger wounds on the front of his body.

Ano take 15 on 3 flurry of blows attacks.  22 to hit with each.

Toben focuses on the blades Xar left lodged in Basarshakath. He makes gestures as if stretching or pulling an invisible object in front of him while muttering "Turalisjth" over and over.

Toben casts Enlarge Stone/Metal on the blades in the hopes to aggravate and/or amplify the wounds Xar caused.

Basarshakath howls in pain as the daggers in his chests grow larger, slicing through his lungs.  He he hacks out a bloody cough spraying red phlegm everywhere.  The pain he must be enduring as his body endures the concentrated assault from the group is incredible.  He runs a finger across the point of one of the now small swords sticking out of his chest, then he looks over at Xar.  The spell slowing him gone, his movements are a blur similar to Ano's.  Before anyone can react, he stands before Xar, sweeps him up into a hug and impales the dwarf on his own weapons.

Xar pushes back weakly, but serves only to help the Dark Star ravage his torso as he moves Xar up and down against his chest.  Blood fountains from the rogue's chest and vomits from his mouth.

Klale keeps at it to a slight effect.

Toben shakes his head in amazement at the amount of punishment Basarshakath has been able to withstand. His mind races as he tries to find something that will sway the tide back in their favor.

A spell in mind, he begins to chant. He swings his staff upwards with a sharp jerk over and over, like a fisherman trying to see his hook. He mutters "Stihe mojka wer arcaniss, jaseve zara wer jarlir" with each motion as he tries to strip away the Dark Star's enchantments.

Toben casts Dispel Magic upon Basarshakath

Like the mist surrounding the town, Basarshakath's bulk evaporates, leaving him a thin rail of a creature.  The large knives fall out with the change in his body, probably already knocked loose by his death-hug with Xar.  Blood splurts from those wounds in irregular showers.  The Dark Star staggers under another rain of blows form Klale and Ano and goes down on one knee.  His eyes sweep around the ground, then up into Toben's eyes.

"I took two of your lives."  The taunt is weakened by a blood-filled cough.  A whisper is all he manages for the rest of his words.  "I'll be back...for the rest another time."  Then his blurred form bursts into the mists with enhanced speed.

"XAR!"  Saris stumbles through the door and crashes face first in the dirt.  She pushes against the ground, but only manages to raise her head enough to spit out dirt and blood.  Instead, she settles for crawling toward Xar's limp body.  "XAR!"

Toben falls to his knees, and in a combination of a sigh relief and a gasp of exhaustion, he collapses to the ground. He can only manage a sorrowful glance towards Saris as he struggles to maintain consciousness.

With so little energy left in him, he is unsure of what he can do for Xar.

Klale DROPS HIS SWORD, raises his arms to the sky, and bellows WHERE ARE YOU? PLEASE HELP US! He drops his arms and shakes his head with his eyes closed. When he opens them, they sweep his surroundings. They settle on Saris. He goes over to her, scoops her up with one arm above her breasts and the other on her thighs, and sets her down by Zar.

His arms bend tight near his chest; he makes fists by his face and shakes in thwarted fury. Then he sighs and enters the building muttering Check on Kornari....

As soon as she is within touching distance, Saris grasps Xar's hand in her own.  A palpable golden energy flows from her into the rogue's inert body.  The flow diminishes almost immediately to a trickle, then nothing.  Saris's head drops to Xar's chest like a rock.

Then her head rises slightly, gently, and falls as Xar takes a weak, but steady breath.  His wounds do not seem to bleed as much as before.

Ourn scans the surroundings, and raises his sword in a salute towards the direction that Basarshakath escaped. Not so much a salute for Basarshakath, but towards whatever remnance or essence of Phin he may have carried with him. He sheaths his sword and walks over to Xar, and kneels down beside him. He quietly speaks to Xar. " When you recover, youre going to have to teach me that drop down from the sky thing you do". He turns a sorrow filled face towards Saris. " Is the boy.. is he really...."

Toben, using his staff to leverage his weight, rises back to his knees.  He rests upon his feet to support himself, while he watches Saris tend to Xar. Seeing life breathed back into his body, his thoughts turn elsewhere.

"He's gone?" His head swivels around randomly, scanning the area. "He's gone..."

His head falls into his hands, stifling sobs.

Toben's ferret climbs slowly down Toben's arm and hops to the ground.  In the aftermath of the battle, he decides to cautiously explore the area.  His first stop is Saris and Xar.  A cold nose nudges the dwarves, neither of whom respond.  Saris looks asleep and Xar, well, he looks like he might live.  After a few moments there, he wanders off, sniffing at the blood and exploring the buildings around the scene.

Klale emerges and says dully Kornari is gone...alive maybe...Phineas...Basarshakath may be in for a surprise...or it may be for the even worse.

He notes Ferb and follows the ferret.

Ano stands frozen for a time, struck with disbelief.  He stares long at the place where Basarshakath had stood moments before.  He was so tired, between the pain, exaustion, and loss they had just suffered, Ano fought desperately to stay in control of his raging emotions.

It was a long time before he realized that the others were speaking.  He made his way over to Toben without really meaning to and looked down at him, face hard and eyes filled with sadness.  "He was too strong.  We did everything that we could and still he bested us.  I'm sorry I was not strong enough."

"But you did defeat him, Ano."  The voice out of the mists resolves into the stolid figure of Ceven.  "Together, you caused a being of great power flee.  His goal was to destroy Nestael, but he did not meet that goal."

Hearing the familiar voice, Toben raises his head. He forces a smile through his grief stricken face. "We may have force him to flee, but he'll be back. Stronger next time too, because now he knows about us. So will Melkor, whoever that is."

He looks down at the ground. "What's worse...", he chokes on the words, "we lost Phineas. We almost lost Xar."

Ourns eyes widen as Ceven appears from the mist. He physically tenses up at first, but seeing the rest of the group at ease causes him to drop his guard. He walks within about 8 or so paces of Ceven, and bows down to one knee. It has become very apparent to Ourn that this man is also one of the fallen stars, but on the opposite end of the spectrum from Basarshakath.

"I bid you greetings good sir. May I ask, if I'm not being too bold or strait forward, what brings you to our humble presence? "

Ceven's eyes go wide at Toben's words, but he has enough grace to greet Ourn first.  "Rise, young warrior.  I'm neither deity nor royalty to deserve such treatment.  Just a friend."  He gently helps Ourn to his feet and pats his shoulder firmly.  "I am Ceven, Song of the Earth.  Forgive my haste," he smiles apologetically.  "But we must talk on the way.  My sister does not have much time."

Ceven steps further out of the mist leading a team of horses which pull a covered wagon.  "Place the dwarven folk in the back, gently if you would, please.  Klale, Ano, Ourn, would you ride guard?"  He indicates six more horses behind, those from the stables where the group had put them.  "Toben, ride with me?  Don't forget Ferb."

Without delay, Ourn ensures all his gear is accounted for and strapped down on his person, and then takes to the first horse's saddle he reaches.

Klale stops his following and hastens to cooperate. As (if) they travel, he helps relate what happened.

Ano pulls him self up on to a horse and gets set to head out.  He feels a bit uncomfortable in the saddle as he has not spent much time ridding before, but he tries to look confident.

Toben nods to Ceven. "Yes, of course."

He makes a beckoning gesture to seemingly nothing. Ferb emerges from the buildings and scurries back to Toben. "Did you find anything back there?", he asks his familiar. He pats Ferb on the head. "If not, then I am afraid it's time for us to go, my little friend."

Toben begins to secure his belongings upon Ceven's horse. "It's fortunate that you have come. I was beginning to think a trip back to the mountain was going to be necessary. Saris and Nestael don't seem to be handling the merging of souls very well. I'm not sure how to address that." He smiles weakly up at Ceven. "It's good to see you."

He takes one last look back at the village half expecting Phineas to pop out in a punchline to one of his pranks. Nothing. He sighs heavily and starts to prepare himself for the journey onward. Just then, Ferb nips him on the arm. There is a brief exchange between them

"What did you find?" Toben glances around the area. "Ok, ok..." Ferb scurries off. Toben follows.

Ourn looks at Toben and speaks quietly, more to himself than the group." Hmm? Where's he following that little cat-snake thing to?"

Klale, sword and shield ready, follows Ferb.

The ferret sniffs around in all the blood and phlegm for a few moments, then scampers back to Toben.    He darts up the scholar's robes to his shoulder and sits, looking directly at Toben's face.

Toben reciprocates the stare. "What did you find?"

The ferret nudges Toben's face, touching his nose to the scholar's.

"Please, we must hurry.  My sister and her dwarven host do not have much time."

Toben fakes a smile at Ferb. "Yes, he did quite a number on us as well. More so, I'm afraid."

He looks to Ceven and nods. "Yes, you're right. I feared there was a disturbance in their merging. I have seen a definite struggle between the two. Where are we headed?"

"Thank you, Klale."  Ceven says after the big man helps load the dwaves.  He climbs up in the wagon to drive, indicating Toben sit next to him.  He drives the wagon south out of town.  When Toben asks where they were going, Ceven looks over at Ourn.  "We are going to a farm a little south of here.  We need to get outside of Basarshakath's taint."

Toben hops up into the cart and takes a seat next to Ceven. "Basarshakath. So that's what his name was." He scribbles something down in his journal. "I'll be sure to remember that next time we meet.", he says with a foul look upon his face.

He glances over at Ceven to gauge his reaction. "Basarshakath called upon some higher power when we were fighting him. His call was answered, and that is when things turned for the worse. Needless to say that is worrisome. Who is Melkor?"

The Maiar is silent for some time, whether collecting his thoughts, hesitant to reply, or still in shock at hearing the name it is hard to say.  The wagon trundles along the dirt road out of town to the south.  Phineas presumed dead, Kornari missing, Saris/Nestael dying, and Xar clinging to life as well has left everyone mentally and emotionally exhausted.

Finally, Ceven clears his throat.  "Melkor was created by Eru Iluvatar in the Timeless Halls, at the beginning of creation. His brother was Manwë, although Melkor was considered by some to be greater in power and knowledge than any of the Ainur.

Impatient with the emptiness of the Great Void outside the Timeless Halls and desiring to create things of his own, Melkor often went forth into the Void in search of the Flame Imperishable. But Melkor never discovered it. He continued to search however, and as such was often alone and apart from his fellow Ainur. It was during these lonesome periods that Melkor began to have ideas and thoughts of his own that were not in accordance with his fellow Ainur.

When the Ainur sang the Great Music before Eru, Melkor wove some of these alien thoughts into his music, and straightaway Discord arose around him. Some of those nearby attuned their music to his, until two musical themes were warring before the Throne. To correct the Discord, Eru introduced a Second, and then a Third Theme into the music. But Melkor succeeded in holding back the Second theme, of which Manwë was the chief instrument. The Third was the theme of Elves and Men, and while it was not overwhelmed by the Discord as the Second theme was, it too failed to correct it. When Eru brought the Music to an end, he rebuked Melkor, praising his strength but reminding him that, as an aspect of his creator's thought, anything that Melkor could bring into being ultimately had its source within Eru himself. As such, even the Discord redounded in the end to the glory of Eru's work. This rebuke shamed Melkor, but brought on anger in him as well, though he hid it. Thus when the Music was made incarnate as Arda, it was already flawed through the Discord, and immoderate heat and great cold stalked it. Melkor then took in the interest of the World and descended to it with the other Valar.

From there, he began to subtly corrupt the world.  Some elves were led astray and became orcs.  Other Maiar, lesser Ainur like the Istari, became balrogs or other demons.  Melkor turned one such maiar into his lieutenant, a powerful maiar named Sauron.  They corrupted creation, created monsters, and ravaged the land in both magic and through wars.  Melkor was eventually defeated by the Valar, powerful Ainur, and the elves.  He was defeated and cast out of the world at the end of the First Age.  His lieutenant, Sauron, eventually took up the mantle of evil and that persisted until the end of the Third Age, a story you are somewhat familiar with, though it has become corrupted through the Fourth."

Ceven leaves off speaking for a bit, wearied in the telling.  Then he sighs and shakes his head.  "To hear the name Melkor, who was renamed Morgoth so long ago that the name Melkor was forgotten by even his followers and should have never been uttered again in Middle Earth, is dire indeed.  It means his influence has reached such height that he may return to Arda.  If he does, he will begin  Dagor Dagorath, the Battle of Battles.  It could mean the end of Arda, of time itself."

Listening to Ceven over the sounds of the wagon, Ourn frowns.

" That's quite a heavy reality we seem to find ourselves in, Master Ceven. If this Melkor is the puppet master behind the curtains, what hopes do we mortal men and our allies dare to hold up in defiance? I don't suppose theres a magical necklace we can destroy, like from the old tales, is there?"

So this Eru, creator and all, is doing what? Hope not watching like this were a puppet show.

The gravity of what Ceven explains weighs heavily on Toben. The stories told of the struggle in the Third Age seem a mere squabble compared to what lies ahead.

"Melkor has been defeated once already. How do we rally allies strong enough to stand a chance?"

He thinks for a moment. "Sounds like Manwë is the counterpart to Melkor. Perhaps gaining his influence would help balance the fight."

"It was a ring, Ourn, and that was to defeat Sauron, not Melkor.  However, it was the mortal races that defeated Melkor in the first place.  You and elves are the Third Harmony, able to resist Melkor and defeat him.  It is in you that Eru Iluvatar instilled that ability.  The Ainur, like the Valar or we Maiar, can certainly assist, but it is because you are mortal that you can defeat him."

Ceven turns to Klale.  "My friend, if you think about it, you will know what Eru has done.  Know this:  in your mortality, especially for the race of Men, is found the ability of free will.  You are not bound to anything but yourself and as such, you may chose to do evil or good as it suits you.  You are no puppet save to your own desires what ever they be.  And that, too, is power that can defeat Melkor for he can never force someone to follow him against their will.  They must always choose to do so freely."

When Toben brings up Manwë, Ceven's countenance falls.  "Manwë will not help you.  He was of the Second Harmony and failed.  His time is passed and the Valar have gone out of this world."

Ourn puzzles for a moment over the ring detail.

" Do we have even the slightest idea of where Basarsha... Bash..er.. uh.. Basher could be hiding, much less Melkor? I'd much prefer that if we were to strike at them, we do it on our own terms, and not as tired and caged animals like our last fight. Though, I do suspect we'll need numbers greater than our current amount "

Then such should be persuadable, presented with a better way.

Ano listens carfully to what Ceven says amazed at the scope of it all.  "It would seem our best course would be to keep the other stars from being corrupted by Melkor.  He seems to want them for their power, and to deny him that would be a great victory.

After more thought he asks Ceven "If it is the mortal races that we need then perhaps the dwarves will help.  Is there any possibility of finding the elves?"

Toben nods in agreement with Ano. "Yes, if Manwë or his peers can't be of any assistance then we must do what we can to rescue the remaining Maiar and hope they will aid in resisting Melkor's influence."

He scratches his chin. "The gonnhirrim aren't a part of the third harmony?"

Responding to the only question directed at him, Ceven shakes his head.  "No, the Masters of Stone were not originally part of the Creation of Arda by Iluvatar and the song of the Ainur.  They were forged later by one of the Valar, Aulë.  That story is for them to tell, however, because they are not part of the original song, they are not very susceptible to Melkor's corruptions.  It is rare to find dwarven clans who side with evil."  He glances back at Xar.

Toben takes in Ceven's answer. "So, given their resistance, it sounds like they would make great allies against Melkor. Gaining their help may be tough. They seem very reluctant to leave the safety of their mountains, but worth trying none the less." Toben picks up on the glance backwards. "Which particular clans should we avoid?"

He points back to Ano's question. "I assume the elves are just as elusive as the gonnhirrim. Where might we be able to find them and enlist their help?"

"The dwarves are already fighting Melkor's forces, the Valaraukar are under the command of the Dark Maiar, the dischordant songs.  If the Dark Maiar serve Melkor, then it only makes sense that the Valaraukar serve him as well."  The Song of the Earth takes a deep breath and sighs heavily.  "The elves left these lands at the end of the third age and sailed across the ocean to the lands of the Valar.  That land is no longer a part of Arda."

" Hmm. So if we're to gain the trust of the dwarves and gain their aide, we'll be needing to assist them with their fight against the Valaraukar first. At least, that's what I'm gathering from all of this, to be blunt and brief. It would makes matter all the better still if our two dwarven compatriots recover in good time as well. "

Toben tries to hide his disappointment as best he can. "So we're pretty much alone, aside from the gonnhirrim and possible Maiar we rescue. Even amongst the men, we are divided. At least with, Sauron was it? The lands were united against him."

He stares off into the distance for a while. "There was a duke a while back. He seemed to be one of the enlightened. Klale, Ano, you may recall Duke Thelion?" He shrugs, "I guess we never really had a formal introduction, but he may be one of the few dukes that would help fight Melkor."

He looks back to Ceven. "How do we fight an entity like Melkor?"

" Toben, if an introduction to the good Duke Therion is what we need, I believe I can more than facilitate this. I do happen to know the man personally. "

Klale is silent a long time before musing As a child I heard tales of elves. We are supposed to be like them but weaker, more variable...and we die. But the years go on...as their existence goes on, their life...its like water in a well, maybe, lowering and lowering. Maybe finally any left would be little more than a disturbance in the air.

The tales say they have ever been against evil. Master Ceven, if you're mistake, if there are yet elves, I thin they can be persuaded to make one last effort...to, to be part of the song of Arda as it were, not to submit or just become...like motes of dust.

The Maiar ponders all that is spoken.  He nods finally in Klale's direction.  "I am far from omniscient, Master Tsolo.  Your words are wise and true."

He leans back a bit in the wagon and runs his hand through his lengthening hair.  "Melkor is best fought by defeating his minions.  He will not fight you, or even the new Maiar that have come to aid you.  Individually we are not worth his notice, or direct intervention.  Not yet.  Being mortal, being Men, you grow.  It is part of the Gift that most Men have never understood.  Through conflict you grow the most, the fastest.  Some say it is the only way Men grow, which is why you fight so often.

Find my brethren.  Defeat the Dark Maiar and push back the Valaraukar.  That will draw Melkor out of hiding.  Then we," and his hand seems to take in all of Middle Earth, "face him together."

Thank you. ... Then let's each hope for a long life.

The wagon trundles on for half the night.  Conversation lulls and rises like the tide.  Exhaustion and worry for Xar and Saris taking its toll.  Both dwarves remain unconscious for the trip.

As the sun starts to peak its head above the mountains in the west, Ceven turns onto a small path leading to a farm.    A rooster crows and an old man has stopped his morning chores to watch the procession to his home.  He does not seem alarmed.

Ourn rides up to the old farmer, pulls his hood back to reveal his head and face, and then dips his head down in a sort of bow. " We meet again, Master Vanter. Though, im afraid it's on less than ideal terms like the last time. "

The old man tips up his hat and thumbs his nose to get at an itch.  "Did you kill my son?"

" Faelorn lives, but not as the monster he once was. He's being held by several folk from Dunston still fit to fight. What they'll do with him in the long run,I do not know. Just know that he is no longer a threat to anyone anymore. I hope that this brings some solace to you."

The old man frowns, then shrugs.  "So long as he doesn't try to come back here.  You have more mercy in your soul than I."  He looks over at the wagon.  "Why've you come back this way?"  His tone is not a challenge, just mild, almost tired curiosity.

" The decision to come here isn't exactly my own.". Ourn nods towards Ceven. " Though I must ask you if my party and I can intrude on your hospitality for a brief time. We've encountered someone out there who makes Faelorn's previous misdeeds seem like child's play, and two of our companions are in dire need of rest and medical aide. Those of us still fit to move can offer you assistance with the farm in return." Ourn looks back again at the rest of the group, with a hopeful expression that his deal didn't step on too many toes.
