Re: Chapter 1: O'Malley's
The stocky dwarven city guard enters O'Malley's on a mission.  She strides up to the bar but stops before saying anything, turns to face the table where Maggie Mcgee sits, and heads straight for the woman.

"Not why I was coming here, but now's a good a time as any."

She pulls up a chair next to Karon.

Re: Chapter 1: O'Malley's
Marceline looks over at the assembling group that had gathered at the blonde's table nearby. She frowned and pondered. On one hand, she did need to be a little more social, but on the other hand, she did not want to avail herself to strangers right this instant.

She sighs and turns to Borak. "If you wish to go, I won't stop you. I'm going to finish eating before I do anything else." A thought occurs. "I also don't want to interrupt business. A lot of that seems to happen here."

In reply to Maggie McGee (msg # 902):

"My name is Karon. Thank you for coming, Lt. Cordule." The hood comes off. "Miss McGee, I was referring to your statement in issue #114 about how we could trust a certain officer of the Guard to have the city's best interests at heart. I may be reading the implications wrong, but I do not think so. Let me explain about the events leading up to the 'jail break' you reported, and let you decide for yourself."

Re: Chapter 1: O'Malley's
The reporter's eyes light up at the words 'jail break'.  "Ooo.  My readers do love a good good twist to a crime story.  Please educate me on this blight of Valarez.  A guard using strong arm tactics perhaps?  Or is it more of a conspiracy?"  She starts to run through ideas out loud, writing each down as she says them.

Re: Chapter 1: O'Malley's
"A little of both, I'd say. Myself and a group of adventurers including Darkleigh Noon and a scholar named Kittran had been contracted to capture an egg of a rare animal for the exotic animal lady, Velkerah. While we were in the woods, I came across some odd tracks. Wagon tracks. As it was a backwoods area, with no proper trail, my curiousity was peaked. I trailed this wagon with my group and found it eventually. The wagon was being delivered by a group of Ferrignan soldiers, about 10 in all. They were waiting for someone. By what we overheard, they were early, meaning it was a pre-arranged drop. I managed to sneak up to the wagon and discovered it was filled with dead bodies. Getting back to my team, we quietly discussed what this meant and concluded that they must be making a delivery to some sort of necromancer." Karon pauses and signals for a drink. He notices the Oread cleric and smiles slightly.

Maggie fervently writes as Karon tells of his experience.  She interjects questions here and there.  "What kind of rare animal?  I assume you mean the Amber Woods?  What day was this?  Bodies of whom?  What did this necromancer want bodies for?"

A barmaid brings drinks over.  Maggie continues to write, switching back and forth between several different papers and books.

In reply to Maggie McGee (msg # 913):

Karon answers " The Amber Woods, yes. We were hunting an Aurumvorax, a particularly viscious mammal. It occurred just before issue #109 came out. As for who they were, or what they were wanted for, we never discovered.  What we DID discover was that this transaction and at least seven others over the previous few months happened on land owned by the Rast family. And from some comments made by the guards, it sounded like the owners of the land were getting something out of the deal. Oh, and that this Necromancer or whoever was supposed to meet them rode a giant underground lizard, capable of scaling both trees and walls with ease. In any case, we didn't discover the Rast family connection until after the jail break. But getting back to the story...the Ferrignans were on our soil, so we ambushed the ten, killed eight, and took two as prisoners." Karon looks around to notice that he had attracted an audience.

Re: Chapter 1: O'Malley's
Karon smiles. "Judge for yourself. I and one other spent time tracking this Necromancer to find what I could of him. His trail ended at a particular tree, one that had the same blight that has infected so many animals and insects in the Amber Woods. The trail went up the side of the tree as well. Meanwhile, the bulk of our group took the Ferrignan prisoners back to the city. They were met at the North Gate by Lt. Rast and Luca Grey.   Lt. Rast had a troop of men with him, and offered to take the prisoners directly to the Temple of the Mercurial Dragon, to interrogate them under spell I guess. Darkleigh Noon and Kittran accompanied them to collect the bounty on Ferrignan soldiers, Danethel stayed behind. As far as Rast knew, they and Danethel the elf were the only members of the group left, unless they said otherwise. When we arrived at the city, we met up with Danethel, and he related what happened. We headed to the Temple of the Mercurial Dragon to see why Darkleigh and Kittran were overdue for meeting us. Once there, we found out that Lt. Rast never showed up, and that NO prisoners had been taken there. We looked up Luca Grey, and he had no information about them either. I tracked down Lt. Rast. When we questioned him on the subject, he told us that he decided to bring the prisoners directly to the jail, and that he further arrested Darkleigh Noon and Kittran for treason, and stuffed them into the jail as well. When asked why he made that accusation and action, he defended himself by saying that Darkleigh and Kittran had been asking questions and defending the Ferrignans, offering violence. That was a lie, I could see it on his face. First of all, although Darkleigh was an arrogant prick, he was fiercely protective of the city, and would never defend Ferrignan scum. He wanted to execute them in the field, but I convinced him that interrogation might give us some answers instead. And Kittran?? He was a quiet sort, a scholar with an antipathy to anything lethal. No - way - in  - hell was he guilty of what Rast accused. We asked to see the prisoners and collect our bounties. We were directed to the jail. About this time, I learned about the Rast family owning the land that we attacked the Ferrignans on. Needless to say, it made me even more suspicious of Bernard Rast." He takes another drink and relates the conversation.

quote:
Danethel:

"Sir, You say that both became belligerent?  I can attest from my knowledge of Kitrran that he's a man of quiet demeanor and a respected scholar as well.  This doesn't sound like the man I'm acquainted with."

Lt. Bernard Rast:

"Everyone who lives in Valarez is responsible for ensuring her safety.  If you aren't with us, you're against us friend."  He turns to Danethel.  "Are you calling me a liar?"

Karon:

"Indeed. I believe that is why Darkleigh himself insisted we bring in the Ferrignans who were operating in secret on Valarez lands. The rest of us were content to ignore the folks moving around with a wagon drawn by a team of subterranean lizards (something I've only ever seen underdark races do before) and go on with the business we had contracted for. But I notice that you never answered my question. How did a man who pulled a group into a combat it never sought for the purpose of protecting Valarez from her enemies come to be accused of treason? What did he do?"

 Rast:

"He refused to answer questions and protected the Ferrignians.  Not that you need be given an answer.  I'm beginning to see a trend with the way your group responds to authority.  It's no wonder the others were taken in with the rest of the trash.  If you wish to speak on their behalf you may register a formal statement inside as well as be present at their trial."

Karon:

"We ARE loyal, or would we have fought to keep Valarez lands free of those Ferrignan scum?"

Rast :

"Good, good.  Yes, by capturing those villains you have done a service for Valarez.  Oh, I imagine the trial is next week some time.  I can't be bothered to keep track of those things.  Someone inside can tell you, or even your traveling companions will know, I'm sure.  Ask them when you visit."
"I'll take that information to Captain Domo about the necromancers.  It's a very serious threat to Valarez that will receive my utmost attention."

At this he turns and enters the barracks.

Karon turns to Maggie. "A good follow-up question would be, did Rast do as he said, and bring the matter up to Captain Domo?"

Meanwhile he thinks and plans what new spells he'd like to write into his Wizard's spellbook. He has heard of quite a few interesting incantations at this level of arcane prowess he has reached.

"So this incident happened some time ago then?  Captain Domo has retired to be replaced by Grey.  I'm sure I can have the former guard captain over for diner soon and ask him myself.  He is a close personal friend of mine after all."  Maggie makes sure the entire room can hear her drop names.

"Have any of these others seen the things you talk about?  Or is this just a gathering of my admirers?"  Before anyone can answer she throws out a few more questions.  "Do you have any  physical proof of these accusations?  Or just gut feelings of lies?  What would the Rast family have to gain?  Why cover this seemingly small infraction with such grievous crimes?"

Re: Chapter 1: O'Malley's
Karon continues. "Although I'm not at liberty to tell names in this case, a sympathetic guard warned me, saying 'sorry about your friends. I doubt you'll find them.' Now this was downright discouraging....they went into the jail and disappeared? We had a discussion between the three of us. The elf, Danethel, was the most personable of us all. He decided to go inside the jail to interview our friends who were being held over for trial. He had to remove all armor, weapons, spellbooks, and material components. No problem, we understood the reasoning behind that. Vun and I waited outside the jail to learn whatever Danethel could learn." Karon takes a drink, and continues. "We waited for over an hour. There was no way it would be taking this long normally. I approached the guard who had taken Danethel's arms and spell components, and asked him why Danethel hadn't returned. I mentioned that we and Lt. Grey were both interested in what he found out. He got a bit flustered and nervous, and started to send another guard into the jail to find out what had happened. The other guard returned minutes later to say ' He's gone, sir. The Clerk said he went inside to speak with his friends and hasn't been seen since.'  The guard I was with said 'What do you mean,he isn't there?' Several more guards hurried inside. At that point, I suggested a guard be sent for Luca Grey, because I wanted an unbiased pair of eyes on this. Luckily, Grey arrived less than a minute later. I mentioned that this whole mess had started with Rast picking up our friends at the North Gate and arresting them, and where was Lt. Rast? He told me 'Ask for him at the barracks.  If he's not there he's at Castle Antrim.  They may not let you into the castle just on an accusation though.  I'll head inside the prison to look around, but don't get your hopes up that I'll be able to bring anyone out even if I find them.  Good luck.' Lt. Grey headed back toward the prison and took two men inside. Many of the original guards outside had now been replaced with Grey's men since the current "emergency" left the outside a little bare on guards. Just as Grey closed the door an explosion sounded on the outside of the wall.  Several guards started yelling, 'Break out!' Grey rushed back out of the door followed by a dozen men.  He glanced back at me and said 'Shit'. He hesitated for a moment he continued on with the other guards and ran through the gate to the other side of the wall.
By the time Lt. Grey and I reached the other side of the wall the smoke had cleared.  A large hole stood out about forty feet up the wall. On the ground below lay several mangled bodies burned and ripped apart by gunpowder. Pieces of the rock wall mixed in with blood and flesh.
Farmers had begun to gather round to see what had happened.  Grey quickly motioned for me. He said
'Quickly, take in all you can see.  Rast will be here soon and you cannot be here when he arrives.'
The blast came from inside the stone structure and blew everything in front of it outward. I realized that that meant those behind the blast, where someone lighting an explosive would generally be, should have been thrown backward.  These bodies must have been between the wall and the explosion and were thrown out with the pieces of wall.  At least three separate bodies were there judging from the different pieces that could still be made out.
Pieces of Ferrignian uniform could be seen, so at least one body was that of the men brought back from the woods. To my regret, I also recognized Danethel's tabard.
Clues present in the materials on the ground suggested the explosion was a
large quantity of gunpowder mixed with chunks of wood and battered metal.  Possibly some old armor or weapons. At this point, we saw Lt. Rast and a dozen guards come striding through the gate.  Grey turned to me and shooed me away before Rast could kill me too. And with all this going on, no one ever DID say what happened to Darkleigh Noon and Kittran. If they 'disappeared' from inside the jail, then one or more guards had something to do with that disappearance. And I already know who I suspect.
Karon finishes off his beer.
