Issue 1

Prince Elwin's sixteenth birthday festival took a horrific turn as one guest attempted to assassinate King Winston with the very present being given to the prince.  Luckily Court Wizard Veronica whisked the prince away to safety.  Some say he has been sent to the elves, others to Senectus's allies in Craw.  Accused assassin Atch, a centakri and former council member of Craw, screamed his innocence as the royal guard dragged him from the castle.  Witnesses say Atch claimed to be controlled by enchantments.  King Winston's health is unknown, no new information has been released.

Several farmers outside of Valarez witnessed a skirmish between what they claim was The Doom Lord Geron and a group leaving the Castle after the abrupt end of Prince Elwin's festival.  The farmers claim a magic user in the group enlarged a warrior to the size of a troll causing the already muscular hero to fell The Doom Lord with a single swipe of his axe.  The Ferrignis forces quickly fled.  If all of Senectus's allies possess such martial skill and bravery we certainly have nothing to fear of a Ferrignis invasion.

In dwarven news, the dwarves of Shadowrock have closed off contact with all outsiders.  Many merchants have taken to creating a makeshift town outside the mountains until allowed back inside.  There have also been rumors that an adventuring group was hired to clear a nearby cave of a malicious goblin tribe scheming terrorist actions.  Possibly the reason the dwarves closed their gates in the first place?  Or is this a sign of greater political turmoil.

More rumors of political strife come from beyond Ferrignis where a radical group of magic-haters has violently overthrown several small city-states in an attempt to create a new kingdom to rival Perriculum, home to the elven wizard tower where many wizards have started their magical journey.

**note - I may have called Winston Alfador instead at some point during the current campaign.  For continuity I’m going to pretend his name is Winston Alfador, but from now on call him Winston.  That’s what happens when you go from memory without looking back at notes.

Hearth’s group was seen following Claire's helpful "Peng-win", as she calls it, through the Shadowrock Mountain caves until it sped away on it's belly down a tunnel.  Prior to reaching their destination the group experienced the eerie phenomena within the Shadowrock Mountains.  Whispers filled their heads with the regrets of those who came before them.

Upon reaching the dwarven mining town of Shadowrock the group was disappointed by a makeshift town.  Temporary structures littered the town but were clearly used as permanent housing.  Within the center of the town a giant bell sat ready to summon the dwarven king to any town needing him.  The group rang the bell and summoned the dwarven king Carleon.  Hearing the bell Locke, Kriger, and Brelyssa rejoin Hearth’s group from the caves below where they had been lost from the Shadowrock madness.

Veronica brought the group into Nadeen's to examine The Sword of Senectus only to transport the group to another realm.

After leaving the realm the group left Prince Elwin in the safety of the dwarves and accompanied Veronica to the wizard tower in Perriculum so she could research a name the group kept bringing up after returning from some other realm, Abyz.  Shortly after leaving Shadowrock the group encountered Skarvalon, the Doom Lord Geron, and Malveese.  The group hid allowing the Ferrignians to pass, while Hearth failed to keep his promise to the dwarven weapon smith Gorm by not taking the opportunity to slay the Doom Lord with Shadowcleaver.

The next morning the group climbed the mountain trail toward Perriculum.  Near the bottom of the path a humanoid demon with rotting bird wings and the head of a horse skull attacked the group.  They made short work of the demon but not before it called three more.  With a look of wisdom and coherence never before seen on her face Claire tells the group to go before charging towards the demons...

Several minor miners who work at the outskirts of Senectus reported a strange occurrence several days ago. Sometime shortly after noon a horrible scream was heard echoing through the mountains. Investigating the noise the miners found a group of adventurers fighting off a winged abomination in a tree. The group defeated the monstrous beast, but not before three more came to it's aid. The majority of the group retreated toward the Senectus border while one ran straight toward the creatures. Several of the group stalled as if pondering whether they should stay to help their comrade. Soon several member showed how badly wounded they had become in the fight and those who were torn between two decisions fell back to help their injured allies to safety. The minors all told vastly different stories of the second battle but for one detail. None of the witnesses recall how the battle ended, or even if it ended. The inconsistencies in their stories suggest a hoax; however, the details of the first battle all matched in remarkable detail. Was this all a hoax or is something strange brewing out in miner territory?

There has been a second sighting of the brave warriors who defeated The Doom Lord. The group arrived in Perriculum recently traveling with Senectus Court Wizard Veronica. It has been suggested that the group is an elite unit working for Perriculum who had been in Valerez for the festival. Others believe the sighting of Veronica with the group is a sign they are truly from Senectus. This reporter has an inside source with information about the famous elven diviner. Around the time Senectus first became a kingdom the Lord and Lady Elthwai of Perriculum arranged their only daughter to marry into royalty. Although good for Perriculum and the wizard tower, their daughter did not accept her role. She fled to Senectus and was embraced by the freedom loving, tolerant people of Senectus. Soon her training as a great wizard became useful to King Winston who employed her. With the soon to be crowned Prince Elwin taking the reins perhaps an arranged marriage is back in Veronica's future.

The Decimators of Doom spent little time in Perriculum before showing up in Craw. A source inside Castle Antrim tells me that the council has hired the group on several occasions. Single-term member Kezra Calais has been seen with the group on more than one occurrence. My source says the group was hired to get to the bottom of the trouble with The Mother. The great city of Craw seems to be falling apart, or at least slowing down. Is The Mother sick? Perhaps she's dying? Or is there a rift between the council members. This reporter remembers the days of Atch spreading fear and threats around the council room. Perhaps infamous council member Mud is filling the role Atch left when his term ended. We will soon find out when the Disbanders of Doom return from their quest.

A strange quartet of travelers appeared in the city yesterday. They seemed to possess little knowledge of us and stood in awe of our amazing buildings and machines. Not being very subtle, the group made it's way to Club Clef where one of the members was identified as a local named Claire. The group attempted to set up a meeting with local businessmen the Saradocs. When an immediate opening was not available one group member that appeared to have several physical disabilities became upset and soiled himself. I'm told Dr. Emit Kline saw the group in place of the owners and seemed to already know Claire. The next morning Kleph Saradoc told The Times that the group has left town along with Dr. Kline and some important work the doctor was working on. Saradoc refused to comment on the nature of Kline's work but assures us that both the doctor and his work will be returned. During his interview I noticed several fresh injuries on Mr. Saradoc and have my doubts that he can hold up the promises made. In the meantime we can at least stop at Club Clef and enjoy a refreshing Endrin Ale and a lunch with Saradoc's patented relish.

The Decimators of Doom have returned from the mission Councilwoman Kezra had sent them on.  One castle guard claimed to see Balen the Silent Stalker use a small mercurial vial inside the sacred caves.  Whatever magic or medicine that vial contained seems to have done the trick.  The crumbling of Craw has slowed and hopefully will repair itself in time.  Many citizens of Craw are calling for the removal of Kezra from the Coucil prematurely.  Rumors have begun to surface placing blame for the near collapse of this great city on the decisions of one or more council members.  Nearly as abruptly as they appeared the Defeaters of Doom were sent back to Periculum.

The state of Periculum is in danger.  It was recently discovered that Veronica, daughter of the Lord and Lady Elthwai, had been kidnapped.  Our local group of heroes made yet another appearance to help find Veronica.  It turns out that the Elthwai family had been impersonated by dopplegangers, threw Veronica into the magic maze guarding the wizard's tower, and the heroes headed inside to find her.  As any local to Periculum could tell you many have found themselves trapped inside the tower's magic maze, but very few ever come back out.  At least very few without the name Elthwai attached.  As we have come to expect from this group, the heroes not only returned from the magic maze, but brought Veronica with them.  It is unclear where the Elthwai family is.  For now Veronica has gone on record stating that she will put her duties for Senectus on hold while she searches for her parents.  It is common knowledge that Veronica is not interested in staying in Periculum, but she may not have another choice.  This news could be trouble for both Periculum and Senectus with threats of war on their northern border.  Will Periculum be capable of defending the new Derelinquin Tribe to their north without help from the wizard tower or Senectus?

In global news the Derelinquin Tribe has amassed more people to the north almost assimilating the entirety of the lands north of Periculum.  Few have seen the leader of this movement, those that have describe him as a fearsome deathly figure.  Some theorize it to be a powerful undead spellcaster, others a death god, and some say he is just a human skilled in politics.

Ferrignis is said to have launched a silent attack on Fort Subtrahend of Senectus.  Lord Skarvalaon was seen within the Fort.  No news of General Bayard, commander of Senectus's northern outpost is available.  It is not certain that the fort has been taken, but none have been allowed inside in the last two days.

The Fey Feed

Some travelers from Periculum came into our home today.  They came from the tower in search of the queen.  That sneaky sneak shifter Mikey spilled the beans about us, and he said the humans couldn't be trusted.  They aren't all bad though, there were some silly going ons with a teleporting horse in Mikey's house.  We'll catch up with him after we play with the travelers.

So far the visit has been plenty of fun.  But what doesn't seem like fun after shopping at Monotone's Mercantile.  They were great fun when the fawns found them in the tall grass.  The one with the strange look in her eyes even plays a good game of tickle fight.  The sneaky one will have a tougher time glowing like fairie fire and the one with the unusual relationship with his animal is a lot closer to it now.  He-he, what silly humanoids.

The swan maidens said the travelers have an appointment with the queen.  The one with fey blood in her said so, and she was “23-charasmatic” so it must be true.  The meeting with the queen should prove to be more great fun, we'll see soon.

The Decimators of Doom have returned from the fey woods north of Perriculum.  Trusted sources say that the group found and returned several important books to the library in the wizards' tower.  The group made a deal with the fey queen to rid the woods of several witches.  Their candy house was torched and the group returned to Perriculum, this reporter would call that a success.

In Perriculum news, Veronica has divined several possible future scenarios involving the city and the inevitable war of Senectus and Ferrignis.  Lord and Lady Elthwai are still missing, with even Veronica unable to find them their whereabouts may be beyond this plane.  The warlord to the north continues to amass an army of tribes and destroy magic in his path.  Ferrignis units have been spotted croosing into Senectus territory near the North Woods.  There has been no news of a battle, but it seems like only a matter of time.

Our favorite heroes have been sent to Concordia on a diplomatic mission for Perriculum.  Word on the street is that they managed to strike an agreement for Perriculum and Concordia to share information and possibly forces should the tribal warlord continue south.  There has yet to be any official report, but the heroes next stop is said to be the warlord himself, Lamech.  All sighting of Lamech have been that of a figure of death, possibly even an avatar of Takri herself.

The Senectus Sun

Our local heroes have returned to Perriculum only to leave shortly after to travel north.  My sources tell me the group is heading for the tribal warlord in the north.  The closest tribe, Cypher Tribe, was contacted by our heroes.  Elder Weaver, the leader of the half-elf tribe, spoke with the diplomatic group about possible options involving conflict with Warlord Lamech.  Cypher tribe has since begun preparations to relocate, rumors are circulating that they may be heading for Ferrignis.

Modus Tribe was next to report speaking with The Dual Diplomat-Destroyers.  Warlord Kald seemed resistant to a peaceful end with Warlord Lamech; moreover, Lamech gave Kald little time to consider as he sent a small contingent of half-ogres and a troll to harass the tribe.  Luckily for Kald 3D was still with the tribe and quickly dispatched the aggressive warriors.  Will Lamech slow his progress after encountering difficulty or will this only strengthen his resolve?  Time will tell.

The Senectus Sun

The heroes arrived at Warlord Lamech's camp in time to capture and kill a scouting party.  After several attempts to torture and intimidate the captive the group gave up on the apparently brainwashed man and killed him.  Several of the heroes sneaked into camp to try and catch Lamech off guard.  Balen the Unseen caught several local families homes on fire while Jackson the Strategist slaughtered a devoted husband and father charging in to find the others.  Paris the Profound convinced the heroes to halt the attack on Lamech and the group talked Lamech into a one month freeze of troops while they discussed options with Perriculum.

Kezra was seen nabbing the heroes immediately after their stop at Lamech's camp.  Reportedly the group went to Claire's home to take care of her sick sisters.  After a run-in with Mr. Saradoc, Club Clef owner, and Mud the group made their way into several magical tunnels and left Mud and Kezra to settle their differences.

The Senectus Sun

Issue 109

It has been three years since we last saw the heroes from Senectus.  Today many of them turned up, though all spotted in different places.  Paris was seen far west in the lands of Lord Leopold, Duke of Vargland.  The tyrant of goblinkind was found face down in his borscht and the goblins are buzzing about a racial revolution soon to be led by their new “god of burny booms”.

Hearth and Claire appeared in Valarez to challenge The Doom Lord.  We all remember when King Elwin was forced out of his castle by Geron and fled with his men west toward the mountains.  Hearth not only felled The Doom Lord, but also took his head as proof.  Shortly after the two heroes headed to O'Malley's, with The Doom Lord's head swinging from Hearth's belt.

Maeve was seen in the Amber Woods sporting a fresh new look with her swan feather cloak and pink dress pairing.  She emerged from the woods fresh off defeating the orc shaman Malveese who had been tainting the woods after finishing his work for Ferrignis.  Malveese is gone, but his toxins remain.  With time I hope the Amber Woods will return to their natural healthy brown.  Maeve also left shortly after for O'Malley's.

Jackson emerged from Castle Antrim in Craw.  It is rumored he has a piece of the sword of Senectus and the long forgotten Councilwoman Kezra is said to be traveling with him.  Craw is still in civil war with Mud and Atch heading the warriors of the Centakri and Lentakri.  Jackson and Kezra sailed the barge from Craw to O'Malley's.

Balen has not yet been spotted, but that is to be expected after all.  I can only imagine he is already at O'Malley's and has yet to be bumped into.

The group had little down time as they met Veronica's son Bellson, a boy of very little ogre resemblance for being a quarter-ogre child.  They reintroduced themselves to both King Elwin and Lord Skarvalaon.  A possible peace may be in the works as the once diplomats helped along talks between the two sides.  Skarvalon seemed to want concessions from Veronica; however, little else is known about the details.  Are the heroes back for good to help our failing countries before the demons flood in from Craw?  Or are they just making a quick stop between their last three-year long hiatus?

After a long vacation the Senectus Sun, and more importantly your favorite diviner and reporter Maggie McGee, return to bring you all the news from Valarez and out surrounding cities.  We certainly have a new cast of characters in the news as of late.  No more talk of Hearth and his Decimators of Doom.  O'Malley wasted no time opening up and sending more young fools onward toward riches and sorrows.

Mud is said to have hired a group for some unofficial business.  The group seemed unimpressed with his offer, we'll have to wait and see how that turns out.  At least his clueless little slave girl is still chugging right along.

Speaking of unofficial business, Kezra made it to Valarez and as usual is sticking her nose in everyone's business.  She was seen at O'Malley's to berate Mud as well as hire her own groups.  Perhaps one of them is going to assassinate Mud as we speak.

There was a disturbance at the zoo earlier today when a group of adventurers barged their way into the office of the zookeeper and demanded he answer their questions.  He tried to explain to them he knew nothing about their quest, but you know how adventurers are.  The bullies will be lucky if Lt. Grey doesn't charge them, then again maybe Lt. Rast will have to do it.  Grey may forget his reading glasses, poor old man.

that eccentric inventor Quix looked to hire some folks to retrieve something for her.  She may be done telling stories by the time I finish this article.  Just another few years and maybe she'll have time to actually accomplish something half as impressive as her talented uncle.

Stay tuned for more on these stories as they develop...

A terrible explosion rocked the South Third as a prison break was attempted.  Several adventurers had been hired by a local gang leader to break out some of his chums.  Thankfully the "heroes" were slain in the explosion, or possibly the fall.  No big loss in this reporter's opinion.  Lt. Rast has let the good people of Valarez know that all has been resolved and those responsible died in the explosion.  Capt. Domo released a statement declaring the spending of city guard funds to rebuild and reinforce the jail to prevent an incident in the future.

As if an explosion wasn't enough excitement for one day, later that night a fire broke out at Qorchi's Ask-n-tell.  A horrible disaster that has left the great tower of information closed.  No word yet on any possible casualties, or if Qorchi will rebuild.  This reporter has inside information that a wizard from O'Malley's had gone into the tower hours before.  Performing some terrible magic incantation gone wrong the adventurer must have started the fire.  With the number of protections Qorchi had set up in his tower it could not have been a simple house fire.

Some disappointing news at the Valarez Zoo.  It appears the zookeeper has been hiding a secret for the past thirty years.  You may or may not remember, but long ago the zoo contained many fantastic beasts.  The Queen ordered them released as it didn't sit well with her that intelligent creatures be kept caged in.  What we didn't know was this order was in reaction to some eggs being stolen.  A local druid community hired three couriers to steal three dragon eggs from the green dragon exhibit.  The eggs were lost.  Lt. Grey has cracked this cold case after thirty long years.  The egg was kept by the zookeeper in the sewers below the zoo and raised.  Praises to Lt. Grey for bringing safety back to the South Third.  Who knows what could have happened if an adult green dragon decided to burst forth from the sewers of Valarez one day.

O'Malley's festival went out with a bang, literally, as the council publicly executed convicted traitor Kaylynn.  Council members Mud and Kezra seldom seem to be on the same side of any argument, but worked together to ensure justice was upheld.

Congratulations to dart contest winner Xtitkk and riddle contest winner Karon.  Both contests were crowded with contestants and onlookers.  Even King Elwin and Queen Mina were in attendance.  The royal couple shared a few dances and mingled with the common folk.

Captain Domo has stepped down as captain of the city guard.  Lt. Luca Grey will be promoted to captain, while Chala Sumner will take grey's spot in the South Third.

This reporter has inside sources that say the attempted breakout at the jail was not as it seems.  Until further evidence is uncovered it is uncertain exactly what happened.  Maggie McGee has never been one to back down from the truth and will bring that truth to light for the good people of Valarez.

In business, my contacts tell me Valarez may soon have a selection of imported good to peruse in the market.  A certain businessman is working on plans to build a port just outside Valarez.  It is likely to still be some time until the project is finished.

This reporter has been busy gathering all the important details for you faithful readers.  I do apologize for my long absence; however, genius is worth waiting for.  The latest edition has news from Craw to Valarez and even above and below the city itself.

Infamous purveyor of goods Captain Kreet took a group of businessmen and adventurers to Craw recently.  Mr. Aeos Foldstone seems to be making friends in Craw with the dwarves of Shadowrock.  My sources say he has plans to build a dock outside of Valarez using several interesting magical tricks and devices as well as manual labor via some dwarven help.

Meanwhile, respected community figure Anton of the tengu in Craw had hired some adventurers from Valarez to find his missing daughter, Adelaide.  It turns out the spoiled debutante had run off with her rock star bardic boy toy, Telfor.  Anton paid out a tidy sum to the adventurers to find and return her, which they did after finding the lovers being held at the Craw docks by several Ferrignian pirates.  Anton declined an interview or to make any comments.

Closer to home, one group lost a member to an insectoid beast they had been hunting in the Amber Woods.  Several sheep and farmhands had been lost to the insect monsters.  The city guard being too incompetent to handle it themselves passed the job off to the adventurers.  Finding the creatures den they burned the giant ant hill home flushing out the creator of the insectoids.  Leave it to the guard to hire a group more inept than themselves, the one responsible for the creatures escaped to cause more havoc in the future on the innocent hard working farmers of Valarez.

Harsk, right hand dwarf of Carleon, has hired some adventurers to clear out a tunnel under the city.  It turns out the tunnels extend deeper than the dwarf thought.  Another fresh faced naive adventurer was shown the road by Takri.  He was the victim of a large toad with the ability to excrete a mind altering substance.  I for one would feel more safe if Valarez could guarantee these strange creatures stop showing up so close to the citizens they are hear to protect.

Kezra has been sticking her nose in everyone else's business as usual.  Her favorite new lap dogs the Roth family have headed out to the Amber Woods to retrieve Jackson, former member of Kezra's group of troublemakers headed by Hearth.  My fey friends tell me the group has found Jackson and brought him back.  Great news for Kezra, terrible news for us.  Why?  Oh, I may need to mention the recent dragon menace some of you may have noticed in the middle of Valarez.  If not for Kezra and the Roth's the dragon would have stayed safely in the Amber Woods.

I'm back to give my loyal readers the terrifying news that all these hapless adventurers are bringing to out grand city.  An update on the dragon situation.  After Kezra's tumble with the green dragon she brought into Valarez from the Amber Woods, not only did the 'powerful' sorceress not defeat the creature and bring safety to Valarez, but she made a deal with the creature and let it and it's young go.  Is this why she was elected to the council?  To create more reasons for the good people of Valarez to be afraid at night?

Of course Kezra's minions Hearth and Jackson failed to slay the dragon.  What's new there?  Jackson the infamous dragon slayer has yet to kill a single dragon by my count.  And what are the younger minions of Kezra, the Roth family, doing?  Not slaying the dragon.  Instead they look to solidify their relationship with the wicked creature.

Don't worry citizens, Lt. Rast at least as your best interests at heart.  Several adventurers recently returned from the Amber Woods with word of the source of the terrifying creatures that dwell within.  Lt. Rast has hired a new group to accompany up and coming adventurers Vun Long and Xtitkk to silence the threat to Valarez.  A hypocrite from the mainland seeks to destroy magic, yet employs those who use it to attack Valarez from afar.  Wish these brave adventurers luck on their way to stop this villain.

Councilman Mud is up to something as well.  It seems all these politicians care about is themselves and not the good people.  Mud has hired a small group including a bounty hunter to search and retrieve someone.  I hope he's not using city funds on this job.  It certainly sounds like a personal interest to me.  What could go wrong with hiring a bounty hunter named Barrett who gives small children weapons, and a young adventurer named Kalroth who returned from the Amber Woods short group members from what he entered.

Harks's group continues to delve into the mines.  They have yet to return to the surface again.  Who knows what disgusting abominations they've unearthed down there to detain them.  At least there is a silver lining, they may yet clean up the West Third.  Something the council has yet to accomplish.

Another group of fresh-faced adventurers has entered the Amber Woods.  How long will we allow these people to travel in to agitate the creatures that live there?  The adventurers seem to return at half the numbers while the creature head into Valarez and attack the lives and livelihood of the farmers and ranchers.  At least they took a cleric to perform and funeral rituals.  Too bad he came from The Mother rather than Takri.

I'm not at liberty to name names, but this reporter has been away for some time now due to pressure from those in power to remain silent.  As a reporter I can't in good conscience hide the truth.  Here it is, from my quill to your eyes.

The politicians of Valarez continue to stick their hands in the pot in blatant view of the good people of Valarez.  Several council members have been seen hiring adventurers at O'Malley's sleazy pub for gruff treasure hunters.

The Roth family further solidified their alliance with councilwoman Kezra as they traveled to the Amber Woods for her.  Once again adventurers stir the pot in the woods and the honest farmers and ranchers pay the price when monsters escape to attack sheep and cattle.  Not only did the Roth family return empty-handed, but they brought with them several other adventurers.  This reporter discovered the names Borak, Marceline, and Tolbrand.  Beware these supporters of Kezra.  But wait, there's more!  Not only does the Roth family continue to work with Kezra, they have also entered into a business contract of some sort by purchasing the old White Dragon building from Kezra's own father.  No doubt some property the councilwoman kept under her blind father's name to escape taxes or questions about conflicts of interest.

Speaking of the new troublemakers, Borak, Marceline, and Tolbrand wandered the woods setting fires here and there.  Several homes were also destroyed.  Men of the woods who no doubt wished only to be left alone now find themselves homeless.  On top of all that I have a source that says they also breached a wall deep in the woods keeping a terrible monster of shadows inside.  Don't be surprised to see it picking off sheep in the next few days.

An update on Councilman Mud hiring bounty hunters.  It seems the job involved traveling to the tiny town of outcasts, Tolero.  They also returned empty-handed, although I have been contacted by an anonymous informant close to the job who wishes to disclose more information.  No doubt some job involving discussions with horrid beasts that claim to be heroes.  Why else would someone travel to Tolero.  To add more speculation, the group took passage on the Concordia's Courier, a ship of no small amount of rumor surrounding it involving illicit activity.

Harks's group continues to delve into the mines.  They finally emerged with several horrific trophies of abominations below.  I only hope they cleared the entire tunnel and didn't miss a passage.  It's one thing to have monsters roaming the woods.  It's entirely another to have them emerge from a tunnnel inside the West Third, next to homes and businesses.  I've also heard a demonic temple has been discovered under the city guarded by an avatar of none other than Vedainerad.  At least the entrance is safely on the West Third so the rest of us can sleep at night.

The Concordia's Courier is busy with all sorts of questionable travels.  Yet another group hired the ship to take them east.  After several weeks away at sea the ship has been spotted anchored off the north coast of old Senectus.  Isn't it bad enough that these adventurers bring back enemies from neighboring towns and cities, now they look to draw the attention of the demons so many of the good people of Valarez had to flee their generations old home from?
