Aftermath

Darrel contacts Ceruleanne and is told she'll meet him at the marina. Once you get back to the dive shop and return the submersible, you don't see Ceruleanne until you leave the shop. She's waiting a bit down the wharf in her own car. She gets out as you walk out of the shop, and waits for you to join her.

"So what have you got?" she asks.

<orange>I moved the other thread along and into this one because it didn't sound like anyone was going to discuss the material. It seemed like everyone just want it over and done with.

So, the discussion in the OOC thread takes place in the submersible on the way back to the dive shop.

Once you get to the dive shop, while everyone is disembarking and unloading the equipment, Walter gets a call on his comm.

Sharik thanked Grev for the use of his submersible in their venture and complimented the man on underwater piloting skill.  She'd found no fault in the man's aptitudes or attitude - especially given the rather ad hoc and strange nature of their mission.

As they waited for a bit, she smiled comfortably as her old vargr companion approached her for a conversation.  She conferred with Vonon for a bit in hushed tones and with no small amout of gesticulating.  They appeared to cover more than a couple of topics (of which, more than one appeared to be rather humorous), if one were to judge by the varied gestures and body language used.

OOC:Since no one has posted that they were speaking to Ms Blue.

"Sorry for the interruption Ms Blue. Here is the data we were able to recover that you had requested. They were in the process of destroying it when we arrived so some of it will have to be extracted and analyzed from what was recovered for the project to continue. Rough guess is that we saved about 80-85% of it. Since I am not a scientist, I will have to leave it up to them. However, they might want to inspect it to make sure that the data was correct in the first place so they do not waste their time." Walter said, handing over what had been recovered concerning Project Shannara.

"That's considerably more than we thought you'd be able to salvage," Ceruleanne replies to Walter. "I'm sure their project went further than my client had gotten... but that was the point--it was stolen before it had completely gotten off the ground."

"There was really no way to sneak into an underwater dome. That was certainly clever security on their part."

"Your payment is waiting for you at the TAS office... as you requested."

"I'd say I look forward to working with you again, but I suspect you won't be hanging around Grendal for very long."

OOC: Are we organizing the sale of stock through her or elsewhere?

The Count let´s Walter handle most of the negotiations.

"Ms. Blue, it´s been a pleasure and although it´s unlikely we´ll meet again, however, instead of saying goodbye, for my part, let´s go with until next time....and with that thought in mind, I´m willing to transfer 20,000 Cr of my stock to you in exchange for a current, complete official and unofficial(blackmarket) database of this subsector (Drexilthar). In addition to that, I´ll give you another 5,000Cr as a retainer to keep that updated and making sure I´m informed of anything of interest.

NOTE: Yes, I know that´s alot of credits, but, we´re talking alot of info, which might prove beneficial....I also have a feeling Ms. Blue might prove useful and it can´t hurt to have a friend.

After the data is transferred and all arrangements completed, "Until next time, and please keep in contact."

OOC. Should we continue on here, or shift to another thread to carry on from the end of this mission, to the beginning of our own personal stuff...ie getting the payoff organized, get a ship organized, personal gear etc.....I suppose the trick question is....what can and should be done ooc and what needs to be done IC...and where?

Re: Aftermath

Sharik watched quietly as Walter took the lead in the transfer of mission materials.  She made sure that only the things that the group had agreed on made their way to Ms. Blue; though she was still unsure of what they were going to do with the portable labs that they had confiscated, but did not fall under the auspice of mission parameters.

Then the diminutive socialite turned back to her conversation with Vonon.  It seemed quite animated as she gesticulated wildly more than a couple of times.  And though, it didn't seem that she was paying much attention, when Darrel approached Ceruleanne, her head did turn and a slight smile played on her lips as he made his offer of a retainer.

Once the proceedings seemed to be done, Shar stood and dusted off her hands.  Then while straightening one of the pleated seams on her tailored vacc suit, she made ready to vacate the premise.

"Vamanos?" she prompted Vonon and then the others around her, "Do we all fit in the Count's limo?"

Rendezvous At TAS

With the team sitting down for a good meal, Walter was having a hard time not yawning. Tapping his glass, he addressed the team. "A toast to our success, something I can now say that I have done, that I had never done before... he said with a sly grin. "I would suggest that we meet back here for dinner so that we are all refreshed after some sleep. I am not as young as I use to be, let alone use to staying up all night. The short nap on the way back did not help things and I fear that I will not be getting to bed for another few more hours." he said as he fought back yet another yawn.

"Something to think about for when we meet again. I guess it would help to get an idea as to what the rest of the group wants to do for the future. In this case, ones silence is not helpful. Input from everyone will be needed so that they can not say that they did not want to do a course of action that the others are doing." he said.

"Here are a few topics to reflect upon for later discussion. What's next? Do we wish to leave the planet? Do we wish to acquire our own vessel? If so, what kind and who do we wish to operate it, given the number of certified pilots this group has. Are we open to new members? What if someone wishes to leave? Getting these and other questions that will pop up answered now will help avoid serious problems in the future. I ask this as there is an old Vargr friend of mine that I had served on a free trader he was on when I was in the merchants, many years ago. He would like to talk about starting backup again as a merchant. " he said.

"For the time being, we can get some rooms here at TAS for the next few days while we sort things out."

Rendezvous At TAS

Dinner is usually an earlier meal, around 5pm, but can be earlier on special occasions (Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas)--as early as 1 but normally at 3.

Supper is the later meal, any time after 7, generally around 8.

These were distinctions made by different classes. Farmers and factory workers didn't get done work until 7 or so, which is when they got home and ate supper.

The 'upper class' tended to eat early so they could go to shows and party in the evenings.

As working hours decreased and leisure time increased, the two kind of blended together, particularly in States. So now dinner time is around 6pm. It can be earlier or later, though, in which case the time would be specified. If not specified, 6pm/1800 hours is 'standard'.

These are  human conventions, however; who knows what Vargr and Aslan do.

The only thing the Vargr book says about it is, "Vargr metabolism is faster and more efficient than the human digestive system, meaning that Vargr eat more frequently but they are able to fast for longer periods if necessary."

So they eat more often, but otherwise it's likely to come down to the local culture, and considering how Vargr are about that detail...

This planet really is the back end of nowhere. If I were to believe the data in the library, this planet wasn't settled too long ago -- maybe a century -- and most of the colonists are from that big star-state, coreward of here...the, uh, Principality of Caledon."

Vonon chewed thoughtfully for a second, "In fact, as I think more upon it, I'd be willing to bet a fistful of my stock shares that, when you get those ships checked out, they're probably Caledon-built leftovers from the initial colonization effort.  Not that there's anything wrong with a hundred-year old ship, mind you, but my personal preference is for trusty, Imperial-built ships."

"That's why..." Vonon lifts and sips from his mug of Kaff; a Viliani style, hypoallergenic mild stimulant beverage, before continuing, "...when I was finished vacationing here on Planet Grendal, I'd planned on going to nearby Planet Outpost. There is a de-facto Imperial Naval Base there, and I was going to look into possibly purchasing something from their mothball fleet."

"I'm not talking about buying a warship, of course." Vonon returns his attention to the fish on his plate, "But remember, there are more to naval assets than warships; I'm talking about scouts, supply ships, troop transports.  All of which could be turned to civilian applications, but are built to military specifications. Although...I suppose, if an Imperial Destroyer were offered for sale, then I'd consider it. Hurr-hurr."

"Of course," Vonon finishes the last bite of fish, "If we could find an appropriate ship here, then we could forego the expense of a jump-three trip to Outpost."

Khea listened intensely to Vonons plan while chewing on those poor meat substitute the Humanities have and which probably has been dead for days, if it had lived at all at some point.

Finally reaching the Imperium, even if only an outpost. Khea would have jumped at that idea if it weren't for Vonon being, at least in spirit, very much like an Aslan male.

After thinking about it a bit she says, in an overly neutral tone "The ships here do seem to be suspiciously cheap even in case the case that they are hardly working. And finding two such offer at the same time? Thats suspicious."

"Well Vonon, I have a feeling that a lot of that has to do with Grendal being the most densely populated system in this part of Drexilthar that can be reached with a jump one vessel. It might also be that the owners did not factor in the cost of operations." Walter said  "There are many factors that the average merchant can not factor in when they start off. It also does not help that the bankers believe the projected profits that the potential owner shows them." Walter added. Re: Rendezvous At TAS

Sharik was tired and dozed for a bit in the limo after tossing her repacked kit bag in the trunk.  She listened to the light conversation in the car for a bit, but having stripped of vacc suit and put back on her more casual attire after the meeting with Ceruleanne, the diminutive socialite let the fatigue creep in and didn't bother trying to stay too awake.  Another tumbler of Sylean brandy from the wet bar in car and she was catnapping for a bit, her head resting on Vonon's shoulder.

Once back at the TAS hostel, she agreed to meet with the others later once she got a touch of rest.  Dinner time was fine with her. but since the party wasn't breaking up yet, Sharik did stay to eat a touch of breakfast.  But it wasn't much - and though she did partake of a touch of coffee to try file off some of the rough edges of fatigue, she didn't want to be too wired once the meal was over.  So, she chose decaf.  The diminutive socialite held up her mug to both Walter and Darrel's proposed toasts, though vocalized little more than a seeming approving grunt as she chewed.

As the youthful Kaagira scion chewed slowly (one might think thoughtfully, though one could also interpret it as wearily), Sharik contemplated Darrel's words.  "I'm in." she noted simply, her tone and demeanor seemingly almost unrelated to - let alone actually convinced by - the Count's actual arguments, "I have enough friends to keep me here..." and she glanced in the direction of Vonon for emphasis, "And know enough of you and Sir Walter by reputation that any venture involving the two of you intrigues me."  The lithe socialite shrugged slightly, "I have been travelling for a while now..." which was likely an understatement as it had been over a decade, at least, "and novel ventures always intrigue me."  Having shown the ability to make a comfortable life on the go, it seemed pretty certain that Sharik travelled by choice and not by any necessity.

Her attention turned to the conversation of Walter and Vonon, "Either system will probably have potential leads for both ships and jobs; I am not convinced that Outpost will have a much better selection.  And I, for one, am more than ready to move on from this particular planet.  I won't say that we are persona non grata here, but we have the potential to become so rather quickly."  The smile on her lips turned a touch wan - which blended frighteningly well with her weariness, "I rather we not wore out our welcome here completely..."

"Do we intend to - or will we be required to - finance any ship bought here through a local bank here on Grendal?" Sharik asked idly, "That might influence whether we purchase here or not..."  Ultimately, she trusted Zeller to do due diligence, it was his reputation.  And she knew that he'd likely forgotten more about finances and trade than she had ever known.

She nodded curtly, when the noble merchant excused himself.  But then a slight frown touched her expression, a gently aggrieved mein showed when the man invited Vonon to accompany him.  Even if the man's contact was another vargr...  "Why not invite your friend to meet us here, Sir Walter?" Shar prompted the former majordomo, though she was obviously tired.

The results of the ship inspections were all positive. The ships were exactly as advertised.

Re: Rendezvous At TAS

Presumably you could have eaten a breakfast in the morning, then gone off to do whatever you needed to do--sleep, for instance--and then met again for dinner. If you want to have 'breakfast' for dinner, that's perfectly feasible.

So everyone is now back at TAS, well rested and having dinner and making important decisions.

Walter Zeller:
"...You up for a trip Vonon?" Walter asked.

"Certainly, Sir Walter!" Vonon answered, wiping his muzzle and leaving the table.

Having changed his clothing before attending breakfast, Vonon is now wearing a bright lemon-yellow dress shirt over 'electric burgundy' trousers tucked into his black spacer's boots. He adjusts the set of his tooled-leather gunbelt on his hips, then looks to Walter.

"Ready when you are, Sir."

I think we're out of sync, or else I am confused. - I'm assuming Walter etc met there guy in between breakfast and dinner? So we are now at Dinner so they could be back for that thread?

Also, weren't the ships appointments the next day - after Dinner?

Anyway, I am posting assuming its dinner time, on the same day we finished the job, after we have all breakfasted, headed off separately and are now meeting back up. Am I wrong, or confused?

After attending his meeting with Maniko Kurasaga, he returns to the TAS, gets a bit to eat then takes a nap...either waiting for someone to wake him up to discuss anything of importance, or just sleeps until the next morning getting ready to go to the ship inspections.

After eating a triple portion of what a Humaniti would eat for breakfast, made up from whatever meat the diner had available at that time Khea excuses herself and goes back to her small rented place in the starport of a well earned rest which lasts well into the night.

Luckily a starport never sleeps so after getting the message about the ships inspection she can easily pass the time till it is time to join. She is especially concerned about the state of the engines and the jump drive of such cheap ships.

Re: Rendezvous At TAS

The ship inspector arrived at the requested time, introduced himself to those at the inspection as Falko Devlin, presenting his credentials as he did so, and proceeded to go through the ships and gave them a detailed inspection.

"As you probably know already, any installation or removal of equipment has to go into the maintenance log. I don't see any variances from the regular maintenance log. There are no micro-fractures in the hull, none in the reactor or the engines, and the lanthanum grid is completely intact. I see one or two places in the grid that may have been struck by a micro-meteorite."

"Nothing to worry about; these sort of things happen all the time,"
he reports at the end of the inspection.

"It wouldn't hurt to get that repaired when you get to a Class A Starport. The grid's 100% functional; they are fine down to about 75% before you have to worry about a misjump. The dents just may result in failure if the hull takes adjacent damage."

"Any questions?"

Not trusting the inspector (after all what would a male know), Khea insists to expect the engines, mainly the jump engines, herself.

Later, after the inspection, Khea listens to the inspector while browsing the specification of the vessels on her computer.

"And are there any deviations of their equipment from the standard?"

Today: Kheaiftouaw rolled 13 using 2d6+2.  Edu - Eng (Jump Drive) if needed.

Re: Rendezvous At TAS

We haven't finished in the other thread but I'll assume that Kaengarr has joined the company by this point.

Kaengarr undertook an inspection of his own, this one less focused on the regular maintenance and broad structural issues and more concerned about the smaller - and generally off-record - tweaks and personalizations that inevitably occurred on a ship that had been in anyone's hands for any length of time, and which could have ramifications for both the security and the habitability of a ship.

He also made a point of double-checking the ships' ownership and mission records with an eye toward anything that seemed out of place or absent. Unwanted complications were a hazard of obtaining used ships, and those complications weren't always related to a ship's physical condition...

  **

Kaengarr himself had turned up alongside Walter, having been invited into the newly-formed company during their meeting the previous day. Aside from Walter and Vonon, both of whom had gone to that meeting, the angling of his ears upon meeting Samantha suggested that it wasn't for the first time.

Based on his previous request for the top inspection team, the Count introduces himself to Mr. Devlin and waits to see the reports. Upon receiving those, realizing those more technical/mechanical minded members of his group would want a personal look around...he goes and takes a break nearby.

Re: Rendezvous At TAS

Walter arrived a bit later than the others after taking a look at the paperwork of the various vessels and options as to what they might procure.

"Hello everyone, this is Kaengarr Ruzokh, Kaengarr, may I present Count Darrel Cromwell, Kheaiftouaw, Samantha Kilgore, Sharik Kaagira and you meet Vonon yesterday." Walter said as he made introductions. "Kaengarr was the one I spoke on the commlink yesterday morning. We meet many years ago when I was on a trade mission for Delgado. He has experience from working on a Free Trader and will fit in well with us.

After introductions had been made, Walter joined the group in looking over the ships logs and other components. Walter spend more of his time checking out the computer system and controls rather than crawling through the bowels of the drives and fuel tanks.

"If these are not satisfactory, Kaengarr has some information on another vessel."

Re: Rendezvous At TAS

Kaengarr didn't actually know Khea's language, but good translation software and an inconspicuous earbud made up for it, allowing him to match an appropriate response to her greeting.

He didn't need it in Darrel's case; while his Gvegh accent was indeed apparent to anyone familiar Vargr languages his grasp of Anglic was otherwise thorough. "I'm pleased to meet and be joining you too. Walter's word carries weight with all of us!"

As for Vonon's jibe... he'd heard it, and the skewing of one ear suggested that he wasn't entirely pleased by it, but he chose to let it slide. Truth be told he'd never done a single day's pirating and had good cause to despise those who did, but he also knew it to be a common (and occasionally justified) perception among Imperials, whatever their species.

Re: Rendezvous At TAS

At dinner, Shar seemed positively lively.  She entered the hostel dining room in a set of tailored coveralls, a tight form fitting affair, that was covered by a light, high-but groat-leather jacket.  She looked much more a spacer in her current outfit and, ironically, her 'standard' electronics didn't look out of place with this set of couture either.  The dataglove still wrapped around her left forearm and the very stylish datashades and earbud p-comm still were still present and accounted for.  Though she'd professed to be primarily an astrogator, a tool pouch sat at hip along with a utility blade.

She ordered a light meal, a mixed-green salad along with a light seafood pasta for the local fare menu along with a glass of the aged, Sylean brandy.  Like the Count, Sharik greeted Walter's (and seemingly Samantha's) friend and their new compatriot in his native Gvegh.  Though it was a casual form of greeting and appeared to be almost all of the vargr tongue that the youthful ingenue appeared to actually know (or at least would fess up to in a reasonably public venue).

The diminutive socialite sipped her brandy slowly, as she listened to the banter and discussions forming around her.  The ship particulars still need to be decided.  They needed to figure out how to make money to support owning a ship.  Which, in turn, the organization and how much structure would be warrant for the group and its endeavors.  Though she'd never been that big about organization and structure, with a relatively large group of individuals, it often did help to know who and what was expected in a given situation.  Emergencies especially had a way of creeping up on you and subsequently not giving you a lot of time to decide certain things in situ; some preparation beforehand was always prudent.

She held up her tumbler of brandy, "Here is to a lucrative venture for us all."  The cosmopolitan brunette had a slightly crooked smile upon her lips with just a touch of mischief as she added, "One without too many pirates...."

Sharik paused for a long moment after the toast, tracing the edge of her glass idly.  "So," the dark-haired dilettante prompted her companions, "how do we accomplish that?  What ventures are we really considering here?  And is the corsair up for sale going to be suitable for that?"  She seemed ready to discuss the various aspects of their potential business venture.  And though she had little formal training in trade, Shar knew an immensely annoying amount of disparate trivia that could be readily applied to almost any topic and possessed a quick enough wit to synthesize it fairly well and speak cogently on said topic.  She'd gained a reputation on the subsector's 'party' circuit as being a great conversationalist.

"However, that was before Sir Walter brought Captain Ruzokh to us." Vonon added, nodding to Kaengarr, "The good Captain mentioned something which pricked my ears up right away -- folks, Captain Ruzokh, here, has a lead on a Darrian-built trader. That's right, Darrian-built, here on Grendal."
