Chapter Three: Putting Things Together

(OOC: I figure we'll pick up the next morning.
Please drop me a private message with what you want to do that night and whether you want to try to
meet up with others. And how you'll be doing that.)

ie; Freddy called the police department in the morning to try to find the name of the reporter that talked to the press last night. No, the red head. He had a tip for her. He left a burner phone's number, if they didn't put him through to her voice mail.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
John crashed when he got home.  He was sure that the confidence he hoped he displayed was genuine, because he sure didn't feel it.  He kept looking nervously at his phone, hoping the burner app he installed worked as advertised.

In the morning, he watched the talking heads on the local news.  He was certain that the cemetery last night would be the top story.  After breakfast, he went to check on his mom, and get a report from the nurse.  He didn't get to visit as much as he liked, and was sure to not mention what might be starting again.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
The evening before, Ali, Kat and James arranged to meet for breakfast in the morning.  In the morning, Ali gets a call/email from Jane and is told about the breakfast.

The Harrows -- Erin's Cafe

It's a reasonably well known cafe near the high school with easy access to the major routes to head uptown to the police department.

After parting from Jane at the high school, Ali heads over to Erin's Cafe. If Kat and/or James are already present, she joins them. Otherwise she'll ask for a booth so there will be space for the three of them.

James walked in a little later, and took a seat.

"Sorry, bus was late." it was always a little frustrating getting around without a car.

"Kat tell you what we talked about last night? I wanna be in the room when the dude from the cemetery gets questioned about last night. I can slip into his head, see what he is thinking, especially about his boss. we need to find out who that guy is."

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Ali ordered a coffee for herself and one for James, letting Kat order for herself. Ali was onto her second cup before James got there even though it hadn't been long. She clearly looked much happier after her first cup.

"No, not yet. I think we were waiting for you." She listens to his idea. <Blue"I like the idea, though I don't yet know how easy it will be to arrange. I don't know if I'm the detective in charge or not. But I suspect I can get you behind the glass as a witness with me. Is that close enough?"</Blue>

When they've finished up that bit of conversation Ali adds, "On a related note, I think it would be good if we were to all coordinate in the future. I've tracked down the other woman, and I can get her to meet with us. This evening's going to be busy - I've got a gig. But I'm off tomorrow, so maybe we can swing really late tonight or sometime tomorrow. What do you two think?"

"Nah, nah, nah," he said to Kat's offer to buy him breakfast. "I appreciate the thought and all, but I ate afore I got here. I'm all good. But I ain't gonna turn down a pretty lady wants to by me coffee." He ordered a cup, 3 cream and 3 sugar.

"So I think I should be able to read his mind if you get me close enough. It ain't what you call an exact science though. I know I gotta be close enough, it feels best if I'm within like 5-6 feet. More and it gets harder. And it doesn't always work at the best of times, so no guarantees."

"No disrespect, but I'd rather not go invisible. Alls I gotta do is bump into someone, or even the edge of a desk or something and it ain't gonna go well. I mean I'll do it if there ain't no other way, but you ladies know well as I do, invisible ain't undetectable. I wanna find out what's happening to my people, if I gotta work for it, then I gotta. But I think it's safer to stay as mundane as possible, you feel me?"

Ali looks at the text on her phone. She talks a little quieter than before, not that she had been particularly loud previously. "Looks like plans have changed. I've got to get to Chester Hill right away. I'm not in charge of the cemetery case; that will be Detective Balucci. I get the feeling things may move quickly. See what the two of you can do about getting James close to the perp. You might consider listening to others, too, James, as they may have a vested interest in certain outcomes. I'm not saying Balucci won't put the guy in jail, just saying..." Ali leaves enough money on the table to cover her coffees plus the tip. "Sorry I had to cut this a little short."

As she gets up to leave she speed dials her partner. "I'm on foot, not far from the station. Can you swing by to pick me up?..." She heads out and starts moving toward the most convenient corner for her partner to drive by.

"No problem at all. It'll be a couple of minutes."  He shows up in seven minutes or so. "Car in the shop?" He asked, as she climbed into the car.

"Don't know much yet, but supposedly it's a messy one."

The people in Chester Hill looked distrustfully at the unmarked with the flashing lights, when CJ double parked in front of a run-down apartment building. A couple of parents dragging their dawdling and gawking children away.  There were already a couple of prowl cars and a fire department EMT on the scene. No sign of the ME  yet.

"Lord only knows," he said, as he climbed out of the car and checked in with the cop at the door. He was told that the body was up on three. They got an anonymous call from a payphone around the corner. Probably one of the residents spotted the body of the landlord's manager for buildings in this block. The body's name is: Ralph Fiente and the apartment is owned by Manny Torres. They're trying to find him now.

John holds his mother's hand in his.  Today was a pretty good day, she knew who he was, at least.  He turned the TV to something else, though he wasn't sure how much of it she understood, getting her agitated didn't help anyone.    He finished his cup of coffee.  "Avete bisogno di qualsiasi altra cosa, mamma?" he said softly.  He tried as often as he could to have breakfast with her, and most of the nurses knew him. His evenings just got too busy to be reliable.

He rose from his chair with a smile, and gave her a peck on the cheek.  He stopped at the nurses station on the way out, in case they need anything from him.

Crime Scene

They head up to the crime scene. The police officer guarding the scene has heard them on the stairs and put away his cell phone. There's a broken body in the hall. The corpse looks to have been strangled by someone very strong.

"We checked his name from the wallet in his pocket," the cop said. "Ralph Fiente." He pointed at the wallet next to the body. "It was in his back pocket."

CJ and Ali check out the body and minimize their fiddling with it.

Diner

Kat and James try to figure out their next move.

Hospital

The nurses say that John's mother has had a couple of good days. Good for her anyway.  They ask if he wants to bring any sweaters or anything for her, as it's starting to get colder.

As he's talking to the nurse, he can hear one of the patients start to scream. (Sadly, not a rare occurrence here.)  The nurses seem to be ignoring her.

"CJ, we should look around the building since the scene is secure." When they get a little distance from the officer, but not talking to really avoid being overheard she says, "He could have been attacked just for his keys. Or the keys were needed for something related to the attack, such as to recover something. I doubt the keys were taken on impulse since his wallet is still there. Maybe we can figure out what door the killer opened with those keys?"

"Listen," he said to Kat in a low voice after Ali had left them. "There's something you don't know about me." He was clearly nervous about sharing it, and given he'd already let them know he could turn invisible and read minds, it was clear he thought whatever he was about to share was an even bigger secret.

"I've done some work to, I dunno, I guess you could say help the po-lice before. I been a CI." Confidential informant. A snitch. "You unnerstand nobody knows this shit. People in my neighborhood? Shit, words like that gets out I'm dead or worse before I know it."

"Mostly narcotics shit, with Detective Briggs. But I know Detective Balucci, the guy Alannah says is in charge a this case. He's a piece of work, not a good cop, not a cop you can trust. Les go to the station, see what we can find out, ain't nobody gonna be too surprised if I claim I saw somethin."

CJ nodded. "Good point," he said, before turning to the uniformed officer. "Knock on all the doors, finding out who's here, that they're supposed to be there, and make sure you get a look inside their apartments to ensure that the attacker isn't there and take a look around. That'll narrow it down and we can get see about getting a warrant to check them. Get someone to call the landlord and see if he's got keys, too."

"Ali, check the door over the body to see if it's locked."

Kat calls her father's friend, Det. Cody. "Kat! How are you doing?" he asked. Once she explained, he didn't sound all that thrilled, as he answered. "That's Balucci's case. You can bring him in. I was afraid the news reports about last night would get to her.  Sounds like it already has for some.  How long as she been yelling about zombies?

The woman had been moved down the hall to the solarium and someone had closed the door. When John opened the door, he heard, "---anyone listen?! The dead are walking! It's starting again!" She looked like a frail, white haired woman in a wheel chair, a shawl wrapped around her.

She looked up at John, when he walked in front of here, so she could see him, but didn't stop shouting.

Better to do that than break down the door without knowing they have a reason. She'll call him from the fire escape to let him know what she sees. As far as getting to the fire escape, she figures she can get there via the roof or, if someone's opened their place just upstairs or downstairs a little she can get there more efficiently via their fire escape.

Crime Scene

Having found that the door was locked, Ali had gone to CJ to get a look into the apartment from the fire escape. It took a little while to get out there, but they saw that the apartment was in disarray. That was enough for them to get the door opened and go inside.

The place looked like it was tossed. They found where a dresser had been moved away from the wall in the bedroom. There's a rectangular mark in the dust underneath where the dresser had been. It looked like it had been 3' x 2' x 1' or so. There doesn't seem to be any blood or a sign that anyone was hurt or injured in here.

More information might come when the forensics tech take this place apart.

Diner

Kat continues to talk with Det. Cody. Cody took James' name and promised that bringing him by would get a detective taking his statement. She could hear him typing on the computer. "Kat, you're probably not going to believe me until you learn this yourself, but this is the most important lessons you can learn as a cop: criminals don't change, they're always going to take the easy choice and they're gonna stay criminals. And addicts can't be trusted, all they care about is their next fix. You can try to help them, but they're always going to let you down. Now I gotta run to court."

Once they get to the police station, they see a few press trucks setting up. None of the local reporters are out. But techs are setting things up and there are plenty of people milling about and setting things up.

Hospital

Her eyes caught his, as she looked at him deeply. "You know. You got there too late, but you saw that the dead have wakened. Go to her! She is maid and matron made strong. Five together are a strong fist to strike back at the dead. Alone you won't stop them! Go to her!"

School

Jane is bored to tears at school, but at least it's a free period, but unfortunately, she's stuck there.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Jane decided to use her free period in the school library to see about trying to find out what she could find about babies found in the aftermath of Thanatos' attack. The stories she'd been told by her parents were that she was orphaned then and adopted by them afterwards. She'd known about the disaster, but not a lot of the specifics.

Looking into the stories of the time in the paper might give her something.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
"CJ, this is the guy we arrested last night at the cemetery," Ali says while pointing at the guy in the photos. Talking out loud as her mind raced through the evidence, "Figuring the guy has a key to his own place, someone else wanted to get in here. I'm not sure why the super died right outside this door instead of elsewhere so someone could just take his keys. Maybe the perp didn't know where the guy lived, got the super to show him, and then killed the super? Hopefully forensics can tell us if the super died before the cemetery events or afterward. Afterward could indicate someone trying to cover up evidence. Beforehand would more likely be theft. I'm gonna take some of my own photos before forensics gets here so I can keep thinking about this."

Ali uses her phone to snap some photos of the apartment, including the photos and the dresser and mark in the dust. She'll also look around to see if she can find any sort of address book or a computer that forensics might be able to get into.

There's no computer, tablet or address book. But in one of the closets, she found a box for a laptop that doesn't seem to be present. There's a table by the kitchen that has a surge protector with nothing plugged in it.

The officer from the hall comes in to tell them that they may have an ETA. One of the other tenants is saying that she saw the building manager alive a few hours ago at 5:30, when she was on her way to the gym.

From the tension that Kat felt from him, James recognized the desk sergeant, and probably didn't like what he saw. He looked like someone who wanted to get out of there any way he could. He knew he couldn't go invisible, too many people watching would notice a man vanish. So he slumped down, hunched up his shoulders and tried not to make eye contact, hoping the years would dull any recognition.

"Well afterward, then. It may well be to cover something up. I'm guessing not a friend, otherwise the person probably would have known which apartment and wouldn't have had to get the super just outside. But so much information seems to be missing. Hopefully the techs can tell us more... We should also check the super's place. At very least he may have a cat that needs to be fed. But he may well have information on tenants." If CJ is good with that, they can make their way down. Otherwise it seems like waiting for forensics is the number one thing.

Eventually, when she gets back to the station, she has a lot of paperwork to do between last night and this.

Ali

They found out that the super, Todd Coolidge lived alone in a cluttered basement unit. No pets, but there were pictures of his grandkids covering his fridge. The call to his family wouldn't be a pleasant one.

CJ agreed there wasn't much they could do until they got more information from the techs to delve into the murder and why the body wasn't hidden. The techs promise to get back to you within a few hours with their initial information, the uniformed officers should be done with the initial canvassing in an hour or so.

Ali and CJ headed back to the police headquarters. They heard on the radio that there was going to be a press conference soon about last night's event at the cemetery.

Kat and James

Kat did her best to try fast-talk the desk sergeant and it was going over like a kid trying to explain that her dog ate her homework in elementary school.

"So you're a cadet, not a police officer. And you're working the zombie case? Are Scoobie and Velma helping you, too?" He crossed his arms and leaned his bulk against the desk. He looked over at James, but he didn't show any sign of recognition, before turning back to Kat.

A tech of some sort walked in behind them. "Does Balucci want to do a few minutes with Linda before the press conference? Or does he just want to talk with her after?"

The desk sergeant turned away from Kat and James to snap at him. "I don't know. Go back and ask."

John

"Go to her!" she said. "Follow the star, past the pie, alone she will sit, and will answer with a lie. Go now!" She pointed toward where his car is parked.

Jane

Jane was used to using the computer to dig things up for papers and such, but she did need to rely on the school librarian to get access to the Empire City Post's online archive. She found that the Post won a pulitzer for their coverage of the Thanatos Disaster. They had done some good work covering the destruction, the impact on the city, and the lives of the lost, the afflicted, and the survivors.

She downloaded a lot of this, but it would take a while to read through it all.

OOC: Can I assume Ali and CJ are headed back around lunchtime? It must have taken a few hours to search around and take statements.

On the way back to the station she tells CJ, "I'm going to be swamped in paperwork this afternoon. I've got reports to file from last night, and they're already holding an official press conference. We also have to fill out paperwork on this morning. And then there's calling the Mr. Coolidge's family." Most likely Ali was the better talker between them, and they would both know it at this point. "I'll talk to the family if you want to file the paperwork for this morning. I can grab lunch and head over to the family. I'll race back to the station to get on those reports from last night afterward. This was already going to be a long day before this morning happened..."

John looked through the window of his dad's truck. As he looked at the kids at the playground he couldn't help but think how out of touch he was. How old were they, 16 or 17 most of them didn't even remember the time before Thanatos.  but he was about that age when his abilities started.

What the woman said didn't really help.  Said she would answer with a lie, but didn't tell him what question to ask.  He got out of the truck and closed the door with the solid clunk that his dad said was the sign of a good car. He couldn't believe what he was doing.  An older man talking to lone high school girls was not likely to be taken positively.

He tried to piece the parts together, She is maid and matron made strong.  It's a girl or woman, but she said 'and'  Five together are a strong fist to strike back at the dead. He is a damn good boxer, but she said five together, so if he's one, and some girl/woman is two, so there must be three others somewhere.

alone she will sit, and will answer with a lie. He spots a girl alone, sitting, and starts toward her. Still not knowing what to say, but that her answer will be a lie.

"Do you have a grandma Doe?" he asks from the sidewalk outside the fence.

Ali has to turn CJ down on the lunch thing today. She figures she's going to have to bring lunch with her as she travels to Todd Coolidge's family (assuming they're in the city). So, first thing she does is look up his family members to try to figure out who his next of kin would be, someone she can meet and let know what happened. Then she'll race out. Darn, takeout Chinese isn't good when you're on the move! She'll have to settle with a wrap from a corner store.

Figuring the subway will probably be faster, between letting her eat while she travels and avoiding lots of city traffic, she'll head over to the next-of-kin's place. En route she'll send a few texts and deals with any calls she has to make.

He went into Sanchez' head almost immediately, wanting to see where he was headed with the questioning, if he bought him. He didn't need to be in Balucci's anymore.

"I didn't say I recognized him. I didn't get a good enough look. I thought I might recognize him. He reminded me of someone. There's been a guy hanging out in the homeless camps, who just... he doesn't belong. And a bunch of folks have gone missing. The kind of folks the po-lice don't usually worry too much about if you get my meanin'. When I saw this guy in the cemetery, he reminded me o' the one I saw hangin' out. I cain't say for sure they the same person, but maybe if I get a better look at the guy?"

"I swear I heard him mention his boss last night before the police showed up."

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Ali and John

Grabbing food on the go, Ali heads to Chester Hill to talk to the family of the dead man. On her way, she called the number from the mysterious ghostly figure from the evening before.

Kat and James

Kat walks around the police headquarters and multi-tasking like a boss. She's got her phone in and an app turned to the local NPR station to listen to the news conference when it starts. She texted a message back to Ali about a meeting this evening. And she's started looking for the guy from last night. With her various advantages, she doesn't have a problem tracking him down. She casts about a bit, before heading to interrogation rooms. She can see Sanchez in there with James. She casts about a little more and heads over to the elevators. Unfortunately, that led to some false stops. She had to check each floor, before she was sure and followed him to one of the lockup cells in the basement.

She couldn't get too close. There was a guard sitting down there with a magazine. "Can I help you?" he asked.

James is in the interrogation room with Sanchez.

"So he might be someone you might have seen. Maybe. And you're sure you heard him say something about his boss last night. So let's go to last night. When did you see him? Where was that and what was he doing? What else did he say?"

Jane

Jane was a bit late for her first post-lunch class, but made it in before the last bell. Social studies is not an exciting class.

After her phone call, Ali got off the phone, she finished her lunch and headed to the address in Chester Hill. Coolidge's sister is a tired looking woman in her thirties. She's got one baby in her arm and a toddler running around the house pretending to be different animals. She meets you at the door. "Hello?"

Kat looks at the guard "Oh, hi. I am Cadet O'Connor. I was just checking on where they where keeping the zombie guy. I was out there that night and wanted a better look at him" she shows him her ID, which she probably has to wear in the station.

Kat

The cop guarding the lock up didn't look all that thrilled. "Yeah, we got him. Nothing really to see." He pointed at the cell, he's in. The prisoner was lying on his bunk. "He ain't going anywhere. I guess we've got him dead to rights."

Ali

Mrs. Wanda Lester looked a little nervous. "What's this about? Is everything okay?" She shifted the baby to the other arm. "Something's wrong isn't it?"

John

John goes about his day until he meets the others this evening.

Jane

Jane continues with her school day, feeling put upon that she can't do what she wants to do.

"Yes, it's about your brother. Would you like to take a seat first?" Ali tries to make sure Mrs. Lester isn't in a position to possible faint while holding her baby. She also would rather give Mrs. Lester a little privacy instead of telling her in her doorway. Once she gets to what she thinks is the best for Mrs. Lester without dragging it out too long, Ali tells her about her brother, sparing grizzly details. She tells Mrs. Lester that her brother was murdered at work, the morgue at which she can see her brother, and that the police are actively searching for his killer.

Mrs. Lester took the words like a kick to the belly. "He can't be dead. I talked to him this morning. We were talking about Linea's birthday party and then he had to get off the phone because someone needed the super. He told me he'd call me tonight. He can't be dead." She put the baby down next to her on the couch. "He can't be."

"Uh..." She looked to the phone. "It says we talked for almost seven minutes. I didn't even tell him that I loved him." She teared up and started to sob. The baby snuggled up against her and the toddler looked confused from across the room and looked like he was about to cry, but didn't seem to be sure why.

"I'll call some friends," Mrs. Lester said, between sobs. "Can we talk later?"

"Sure. Call me any time." Ali hands Mrs. Lester a business card (with her desk number that she usually has forwarded to her cellphone). While not rushing out, Ali lets Mrs. Lester guide her to the door and leaves with a last comforting word or two.

After at getting at least a block away Ali calls CJ. "Hi. How's the paperwork? Looks like the perp may have arrived very close to 6:07. Maybe we can find some surveillance footage from anywhere nearby close to that time. I'm on my way back to the station now."

"Good job," CJ said. "We still haven't gotten a ToD from the coroner yet. "I'm not sure what we'll have from surveillance in that neighborhood, but that gives us something we can use on the timeline for Coolidge. See you when you get here."

As soon as she came above ground by police headquarters, she got another text from him. "Coroner called. If you get this in time, head over there, rather than to your desk."

The coroner wasn't in police headquarters. His offices were in the basement of the Empire City Hospital. It wasn't far from the police headquarters.

In reply to GM (msg # 116):

OOC: Lol! How did James end up talking to the cop and Kat meeting with the zombie leader? I think we didn't do this right...

"You alright detective? You look like you got a headache or somethin'." Nobody had ever noticed him snooping on their thoughts before, but he swore that this guy somehow caught him.

"OK, it's like this. I heard a commotion in the graveyard. There was a ladder on the wall, so I climbed up to see what was goin' on. That's where I see the zombie guy and his crew. And I dunno, somethin' about him looked so familiar to me. He was leadin' them out and over the ladder, takin' them out. He says somethin' there about... shit." He looked embarrassed suddenly about dropping profanity in the police interrogation, stopped then started again. "I mean I don't know, he says something like the boss won't be happy, or the boss isn't gonna like this or somethin' like that. I cain't remember the exact words, sorry. But it was about a boss."

(OOC: I'm so sorry, I don't know what happened to the response I sent out on Tuesday.)

Kat

The cell was a secure room with a secure door. From the window in the door, Kat could see the guy from the cemetery sprawled out on the cot. His laceless shoes were on the ground next to the cot.

Ali

Ali is heading to the hospital to talk with the coroner and her partner about Coolidge.

John

John goes about his day until he meets the others this evening.

Jane

Jane continues with her school day, feeling put upon that she can't do what she wants to do.

James

Sanchez just looked at James. "Let's write that up and you can sign your statement. I'lll make sure that investigating detective  will get this and he'll bring you in, if he needs you."

Press Conference

Outside, the press conference is just starting.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Ali

Ali got to the hospital and headed downstairs to the coroner's area.  When she got there, CJ and the coroner, Dr. Florence Gale were talking about Coolidge. They turned and brought her back up to speed.

Coolidge was killed quickly. There were no signs of defensive wounds. There was bruising on his arms and his neck and it looked like his neck was wrenched. There were signs of necrotic flesh on his clothing. Gale sighed and said. "More zombies."

The rest of the day was spent doing the paperwork from last night and today.

When she got back to the station, she found out that Balucci said that the guy last night was probably a metahuman that could control zombies and that he's gotten the guy from last night to confess.

John

John watched the press conference. Det. Balucci was introduced and he gave a statement about last night. There was a single individual that seems to have been a metahuman with the ability to raise and control zombies. A small group of zombies were put down last night by a small group of Empire City citizens. No, it wasn't the Dark Avenger, he answered in response to a shouted question. The city is not at risk. The police department has control of this.

After that, his research brings up all sort of information on pop culture zombies: radioactive waste, magically produced, but in both cases zombies spread from zombie wounds on others. Beheading and headshots seem to dispatch zombies nicely.

Jane

Jane continues with her school day, feeling put upon that she can't do what she wants to do.

James and Kat

James finished up with Sanchez and found Kat. She tries to get him back downstairs to get close to the guy from last night, but after his press conference, Balucci is with the prisoner and she can't get them into the viewing room to watch the interrogation. The two of them end up leaving without actually getting some mind time with guy from last night.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
When Ali has some time between the hospital and doing paperwork she sends separate texts to each of the supers she's been dealing with. She asks them all to meet in a field at a park  in the Harrows at dusk (assume that's 5:00 or maybe just a little after?).    Then she turns to her hours of paperwork, being delicate about the witnesses/vigilantes from last night.

Before going to the park Ali will have to make sure all her stuff is ready for her gig  later on in the evening. She doesn't want to be too rushed leaving the park to get there, and she needs time to warm up.

He shrugged at Kat, clearly disappointed at not being able to get next to the suspect.

"You know there's one other way to get me next to the guy. Get me arrested. If we're in the same holding area, I'll be able to read him. Course then I'm in jail, so there's a bit of a flaw there."
