Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together

John is at the hospital visiting his mother. He reads to her and just sits with her for about an  hour. The news is on and the talking heads are trying to spin no news about the cemetery from last night into speculation about Thanatos coming back, etc...

"Well, let's go in and see for ourselves, then," Ali says to CJ after they get the minimal update. She makes sure she gets some rubber gloves before going into the crime scene.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
John holds his mother's hand in his.  Today was a pretty good day, she knew who he was, at least.  He turned the TV to something else, though he wasn't sure how much of it she understood, getting her agitated didn't help anyone.    He finished his cup of coffee.  "Avete bisogno di qualsiasi altra cosa, mamma?" he said softly.  He tried as often as he could to have breakfast with her, and most of the nurses knew him. His evenings just got too busy to be reliable.

He rose from his chair with a smile, and gave her a peck on the cheek.  He stopped at the nurses station on the way out, in case they need anything from him.

Crime Scene

They head up to the crime scene. The police officer guarding the scene has heard them on the stairs and put away his cell phone. There's a broken body in the hall. The corpse looks to have been strangled by someone very strong.

"We checked his name from the wallet in his pocket," the cop said. "Ralph Fiente." He pointed at the wallet next to the body. "It was in his back pocket."

CJ and Ali check out the body and minimize their fiddling with it.

Diner

Kat and James try to figure out their next move.

Hospital

The nurses say that John's mother has had a couple of good days. Good for her anyway.  They ask if he wants to bring any sweaters or anything for her, as it's starting to get colder.

As he's talking to the nurse, he can hear one of the patients start to scream. (Sadly, not a rare occurrence here.)  The nurses seem to be ignoring her.

"CJ, we should look around the building since the scene is secure." When they get a little distance from the officer, but not talking to really avoid being overheard she says, "He could have been attacked just for his keys. Or the keys were needed for something related to the attack, such as to recover something. I doubt the keys were taken on impulse since his wallet is still there. Maybe we can figure out what door the killer opened with those keys?"

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
"Listen," he said to Kat in a low voice after Ali had left them. "There's something you don't know about me." He was clearly nervous about sharing it, and given he'd already let them know he could turn invisible and read minds, it was clear he thought whatever he was about to share was an even bigger secret.

"I've done some work to, I dunno, I guess you could say help the po-lice before. I been a CI." Confidential informant. A snitch. "You unnerstand nobody knows this shit. People in my neighborhood? Shit, words like that gets out I'm dead or worse before I know it."

"Mostly narcotics shit, with Detective Briggs. But I know Detective Balucci, the guy Alannah says is in charge a this case. He's a piece of work, not a good cop, not a cop you can trust. Les go to the station, see what we can find out, ain't nobody gonna be too surprised if I claim I saw somethin."

"Ya, I will call a friend of mine to see if we can get close to him" she grins "My father had mentioned Balucci and it was not good but he never told me why, so I would not trust him as far as I could throw him"

She pulls out her cell phone and makes a call to her fathers old friend who is a detective, asking if she can bring in a guy who was at the cemetery last night, she explains that Ali already got his info but she is doing a little work to see what she can find out.

Crime Scene

CJ nodded. "Good point," he said, before turning to the uniformed officer. "Knock on all the doors, finding out who's here, that they're supposed to be there, and make sure you get a look inside their apartments to ensure that the attacker isn't there and take a look around. That'll narrow it down and we can get see about getting a warrant to check them. Get someone to call the landlord and see if he's got keys, too."

"Ali, check the door over the body to see if it's locked."

Diner

Kat calls her father's friend, Det. Cody. "Kat! How are you doing?" he asked. Once she explained, he didn't sound all that thrilled, as he answered. "That's Balucci's case. You can bring him in. I'll make sure someone takes his statement, but Balucci's Balucci. I'm not sure if he'll contact your guy. You know you can call, when you don't want something. We can come over for dinner. Louise and the kids would love to see you and we can talk about how the things are going for you."

Hospital

John is in the hall talking to the nurse and listening to the screaming patient.

Ali checks to see that she can get by the body without disturbing things before forensics arrives. If she can, with her hands still gloved she'll try knocking, and then if there's no answer she'll try the doorknob.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
John nodded to the nurse.  "I'm sure I can find a couple of her sweaters in her stuff." he says.  He sighed quietly to himself.  When he was first looking for a place to care for his mom, he found some very nice ones, small, home like, and expensive.  He wished he could have afforded something like that, but things were what they were.  He looked back at the nurse.  "I turned the TV in mom's room. I was afraid the news reports about last night would get to her.  Sounds like it already has for some.  How long as she been yelling about zombies?

The nurse sighed. "She's always shouting. Yesterday, I think..." She paused. "She started yelling again around noon."

John eyes narrowed a bit.  Noon? he wonders.  "Does she always talk about Thanatos?"  John knew most of the residents, at least those that had been there for a while.  He wanders back into the ward to check on the woman.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
"Huh?" the nurse asked, trying to deal with a patient order at the same time. "No, she doesn't." She didn't notice, when he walked off to deal with the patient.

The woman had been moved down the hall to the solarium and someone had closed the door. When John opened the door, he heard, "---anyone listen?! The dead are walking! It's starting again!" She looked like a frail, white haired woman in a wheel chair, a shawl wrapped around her.

She looked up at John, when he walked in front of here, so she could see him, but didn't stop shouting.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Cody sounded annoyed. "You got to do better than that, if you want to be a good cop. You can't just half ass talking to witnesses. I'm heading to the courthouse in ten minutes. Call your friend and get me a name. When you have a name, I can start the paperwork and we can bring him in. But if you don't think he has anything, don't waste people's time. Not mine, not any other detectives, and especially, not yours. You're in school. You're not a police officer. It's not up to you to do anything other than graduate.

"Kat, your father would want you to be safe and go off to college."

Kat could hear someone in the background say something, but not what the words were. "Shut up!" Cody shouted. "I'm on the damned phone!"

"Sorry, Kat. I'm leaving in ten minutes. If you can get your friends name and he has something, we'll see what we can do. And he won't be talking to Balucci."

(OOC: I assume you meant Balucci.)

John kneels by the woman's side.  "The zombies are gone." He says softly, wishing he could remember her name.  After a while, you start to learn the other residents, and their families.  "It was a long time ago.  We are safe now."

She looked familiar, but he hadn't talked to her before or learned her name. There's a name on her patient bracelet, "Doe". She squeezed his hand. "They're back. They've been back!" she snapped. "No one's listening. They're back. For weeks now! They're coming back!"

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
John looked at her.  "Doe, what do you mean they are back?"  Ordinarily he wouldn't worry about what the disease makes people say.  There was the one time they had to cover the vents in one of the resident's rooms to 'keep the lions from coming out'   But with the action at the cemetery last night, and the news this morning, he wasn't so sure it was a coincidence.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Ali walks over to CJ to tell him about the door. She suspects she might be able to get a look inside from the fire escape. Better to do that than break down the door without knowing they have a reason. She'll call him from the fire escape to let him know what she sees. As far as getting to the fire escape, she figures she can get there via the roof or, if someone's opened their place just upstairs or downstairs a little she can get there more efficiently via their fire escape.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Crime Scene

Having found that the door was locked, Ali had gone to CJ to get a look into the apartment from the fire escape. It took a little while to get out there, but they saw that the apartment was in disarray. That was enough for them to get the door opened and go inside.

The place looked like it was tossed. They found where a dresser had been moved away from the wall in the bedroom. There's a rectangular mark in the dust underneath where the dresser had been. It looked like it had been 3' x 2' x 1' or so. There doesn't seem to be any blood or a sign that anyone was hurt or injured in here.

More information might come when the forensics tech take this place apart.

Diner

Kat continues to talk with Det. Cody. Cody took James' name and promised that bringing him by would get a detective taking his statement. She could hear him typing on the computer. "Kat, you're probably not going to believe me until you learn this yourself, but this is the most important lessons you can learn as a cop: criminals don't change, they're always going to take the easy choice and they're gonna stay criminals. And addicts can't be trusted, all they care about is their next fix. You can try to help them, but they're always going to let you down. Now I gotta run to court."

Once they get to the police station, they see a few press trucks setting up. None of the local reporters are out. But techs are setting things up and there are plenty of people milling about and setting things up.

Hospital

Her eyes caught his, as she looked at him deeply. "You know. You got there too late, but you saw that the dead have wakened. Go to her! She is maid and matron made strong. Five together are a strong fist to strike back at the dead. Alone you won't stop them! Go to her!"

School

Jane is bored to tears at school, but at least it's a free period, but unfortunately, she's stuck there.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Jane decided to use her free period in the school library to see about trying to find out what she could find about babies found in the aftermath of Thanatos' attack. The stories she'd been told by her parents were that she was orphaned then and adopted by them afterwards. She'd known about the disaster, but not a lot of the specifics.

Looking into the stories of the time in the paper might give her something.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
"CJ, this is the guy we arrested last night at the cemetery," Ali says while pointing at the guy in the photos. Talking out loud as her mind raced through the evidence, "Figuring the guy has a key to his own place, someone else wanted to get in here. I'm not sure why the super died right outside this door instead of elsewhere so someone could just take his keys. Maybe the perp didn't know where the guy lived, got the super to show him, and then killed the super? Hopefully forensics can tell us if the super died before the cemetery events or afterward. Afterward could indicate someone trying to cover up evidence. Beforehand would more likely be theft. I'm gonna take some of my own photos before forensics gets here so I can keep thinking about this."

Ali uses her phone to snap some photos of the apartment, including the photos and the dresser and mark in the dust. She'll also look around to see if she can find any sort of address book or a computer that forensics might be able to get into.
