Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
John looked through the window of his dad's truck. As he looked at the kids at the playground he couldn't help but think how out of touch he was. How old were they, 16 or 17 most of them didn't even remember the time before Thanatos.  but he was about that age when his abilities started.

What the woman said didn't really help.  Said she would answer with a lie, but didn't tell him what question to ask.  He got out of the truck and closed the door with the solid clunk that his dad said was the sign of a good car. He couldn't believe what he was doing.  An older man talking to lone high school girls was not likely to be taken positively.

He tried to piece the parts together, She is maid and matron made strong.  It's a girl or woman, but she said 'and'  Five together are a strong fist to strike back at the dead. He is a damn good boxer, but she said five together, so if he's one, and some girl/woman is two, so there must be three others somewhere.

alone she will sit, and will answer with a lie. He spots a girl alone, sitting, and starts toward her. Still not knowing what to say, but that her answer will be a lie.

"Do you have a grandma Doe?" he asks from the sidewalk outside the fence.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Collar up and gaze down, James followed Kat, increasingly nervous about his surroundings, but happy to be past the desk sergeant. He tried to get into Balucci's head, even though it wasn't really what he was there for, just to give him something to think about, take his mind off of her anxiety.

Jane stared at the man on the other side of the fence.

"How do you know my name?" she asked, confused.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
John didn't know if that counted.  It didn't sound like a lie, but it also wasn't really an answer either. "I don't." he replied, pausing a moment before realizing she might want more of an explanation.  "I met a woman named Doe this morning, and she led me here.". He wasn't sure she would believe him if he told her how he actually got here.  He looked around nervously.

"So some woman sent you to a high school to talk to children? And she told you my name." she said. "Not the least bit creepy."

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
"Not children.  A girl" he says, realizing that want any better, quickly adding "or a woman.  Or and a woman. Maid made matron, what ever that means.". Mumbling to himself.  He stops talking then looks at her, shaking his head.  You're right.  It is creepy, and if it wasn't for the zom.. ". He stops again mid sentence. "Never mind, you're too young.  Forget I was even here." he turned back toward the pizza place.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
When he started to say the magic Z word, he could see the light dawn in her eyes. "You were there last night weren't you? A friend of mine was there. I can let her know that you're looking for her."

She twisted her phone in her hands nervously.

He whispered to Kat, "Not much so far, I need to get in. Balucci is going to be on TV soon, not sure where the bad guy is at, but I doubt he's gonna be there."

Ali

Ali and CJ head back to the station. They get there around lunchtime and her partner, CJ is already tossing out lunch ideas.

Kat and James

James and Kat are in front of Det. Sanchez. James had just whispered to her, and then Kat had greeted the detective.

Sanchez looked over the two of them. "You must be Popper. You go by Soda, right? I saw  your file." He cocked his head toward the interrogation rooms. "It'll be quieter over there and no one will see that you're here. Let's here what you saw last night. I think Balucci's got everything closed, but Cody wants your statement."

Jane and John

Jane and John talked to each other through the fence at the edge of the high school grounds.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
John stops, but doesn't directly answer the question.  He waits for a moment, staring at the pizza place before turning around.  He pulls something from his jacket pocket.  "Have your friend leave message with a time and place."  he says and slips a business card through the chain link.  The card has a image of brass knuckles on the side showing.

"I'm sure she'll be free after four-thirty or so. Do you know where the Empire City Diner is? She's dark haired and about 6' tall. You won't be able to miss her. Have a good one, Mr. Uh... Knuckles?" she asked, looking at the card for a better name that might be on it.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
The back side of the card only has a hand written phone number on it.

John smiles a bit, his face has a gentle look to it.  He seems like a decent guy for someone that surely to a kid looks to be in his forties. "Too public." he says.  "Tell your friend to be on the diner roof at 5..."  His eyes meet hers. "...and I'll tell mine."

He turns and starts back to the pizza place, a slice of pepperoni, calling his name.

"The roof?! You know that people can talk over a cup of coffee and some pie, right?" She shook her head. "Roof," she muttered.

Before she could say anything more the bell went off. She turned and hurried back to school.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Ali has to turn CJ down on the lunch thing today. She figures she's going to have to bring lunch with her as she travels to Todd Coolidge's family (assuming they're in the city). So, first thing she does is look up his family members to try to figure out who his next of kin would be, someone she can meet and let know what happened. Then she'll race out. Darn, takeout Chinese isn't good when you're on the move! She'll have to settle with a wrap from a corner store.

Figuring the subway will probably be faster, between letting her eat while she travels and avoiding lots of city traffic, she'll head over to the next-of-kin's place. En route she'll send a few texts and deals with any calls she has to make.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
John calls back of her shoulder.  "Then tell her to bring pie."   On his was home, he wondered what part of her story was a lie.  That she had a friend?  'Maid and Matron made strong'  Maybe her mother?  The girl said her name was also Doe.   He thought it was her first name, but maybe it's her last.  Perhaps a power passed from grandmother to mother to daughter?  But how did grandma know the van was going to the pizza place.  Maybe she heard someone was moving today.  Sometime his mom is pretty lucid.

Ali found that Coolidge's next of kin is a sister that lives in Chester Hill with her family. Once she's above ground, she dials a number, as she walks.

After lunch, John's phone rings.

"Yeah hi, thas me. Pleased to meetcha." James looked around nervously.

"I saw the guy last night, the one that was leading the... you know. Z word. I couldn't tell at the time, but I think I mighta recognized him. Seen him around the 'hood, working with some other folks, but I cain't be sure, I didn't get that good a look at him. I need to see him up close to be sure."

"I did overheard him saying something about a boss too. You gotta axe him 'bout that fo' sure."

Sanchez nodded and led James to the interrogation room. "Kat, if you want to go grab some coffee or something, I'll give you a call when we're done." He left her at his desk.

On the way to the interrogation room, James could a holding pen with a handful of people in it and another interrogation room that was closed.

Once James was in the interrogation room, Sanchez sat down with his notebook.

"Okay, let's start from the beginning." He takes James' name, phone number, address, etc... to make sure that they can find him easily, if they have follow-up questions.

"So you saw him last night in the cemetery with the zombies. You recognized him. From where? Where had you seen him before? What was he doing? Who was he with at that time? When did you hear him talking about his boss? Last night? Or when you saw him on the streets?"

He jots down notes as James talks.

Kat will walk to see if she can find the zombie guy. She will listen in on her phone to the news conference.

Then she goes with him into the interrogation room.

He went into Sanchez' head almost immediately, wanting to see where he was headed with the questioning, if he bought him. He didn't need to be in Balucci's anymore.

"I didn't say I recognized him. I didn't get a good enough look. I thought I might recognize him. He reminded me of someone. There's been a guy hanging out in the homeless camps, who just... he doesn't belong. And a bunch of folks have gone missing. The kind of folks the po-lice don't usually worry too much about if you get my meanin'. When I saw this guy in the cemetery, he reminded me o' the one I saw hangin' out. I cain't say for sure they the same person, but maybe if I get a better look at the guy?"

"I swear I heard him mention his boss last night before the police showed up."

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
Ali and John

Grabbing food on the go, Ali heads to Chester Hill to talk to the family of the dead man. On her way, she called the number from the mysterious ghostly figure from the evening before.

Kat and James

Kat walks around the police headquarters and multi-tasking like a boss. She's got her phone in and an app turned to the local NPR station to listen to the news conference when it starts. She texted a message back to Ali about a meeting this evening. And she's started looking for the guy from last night. With her various advantages, she doesn't have a problem tracking him down. She casts about a bit, before heading to interrogation rooms. She can see Sanchez in there with James. She casts about a little more and heads over to the elevators. Unfortunately, that led to some false stops. She had to check each floor, before she was sure and followed him to one of the lockup cells in the basement.

She couldn't get too close. There was a guard sitting down there with a magazine. "Can I help you?" he asked.

James is in the interrogation room with Sanchez.

"So he might be someone you might have seen. Maybe. And you're sure you heard him say something about his boss last night. So let's go to last night. When did you see him? Where was that and what was he doing? What else did he say?"

Jane

Jane was a bit late for her first post-lunch class, but made it in before the last bell. Social studies is not an exciting class.

Re: Chapter Three: Putting Things Together
After her phone call, Ali got off the phone, she finished her lunch and headed to the address in Chester Hill. Coolidge's sister is a tired looking woman in her thirties. She's got one baby in her arm and a toddler running around the house pretending to be different animals. She meets you at the door. "Hello?"
