Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
John does a double check when he finds Ali O's band site.  "Detective O'Malley?" he says with a bit of shock.  "Small world... But looks like next weekend will work.

He flips back to the map tab, mumbling to himself.  "That doesn't make sense." he mumbles, fairly certain he remembered it right.  "Why would they have a fake address, unless David isn't her son.  Maybe I'm not the only one she talks to."   John commits himself to visiting again tonight.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
Gym

David gave Kat a card for someone he knows that can help her. He wrote "give her a hand. Thanks. D." on the back. "Just show him this and he'll give you a good deal."

Hospital

Ali listens as the thugs try to find the orderly. They grumble and split up to check bathrooms and to even ask as the nurses station. One of the nurses said that he might be on break or ended his shift. She's not sure. And she was busy, so she was gone. One lingered to check on Torres, but didn't try to get past the police officers there. One of them called D and was told to leave two guys there and for the other two to check the building and call him if they find anything.

Carpenters

Jane's father sighed. "I still try to do the best I can for Empire City. Sometimes that means talking to people like the Dark Avenger, when the police aren't able to do the job. He does the same thing and feeds us tips, when we're better able to deal with a problem.

"And unfortunately, no. We weren't told what to expect. Just that where you were found in the middle of the fight, there's no telling what might have affected you. When you were a kid, you didn't really get sick, but we didn't think anything of it. It wasn't until you told us that we knew for sure."

Jane again asked her father what heroes told her this. "Some of the Avengers friends" was all her father would say no matter how much she wheedled.

Other Hospital

That evening, John headed back to the hospital to see who Grandma Doe's visitor was.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
"So what happens now?" Jane asked. "I get some training to learn how to use what I have better? Because I don't want to stop. There's too many people I can help by continuing."

Her father put his hand on her arm. "What about school? Or college. There's so much you're going to need to become the person that you need to be."

She grinned. "Lots of people have after school jobs. This one will be mine."

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
Figuring things aren't going to change much since the guards know about the two thugs, Ali decides it's time to get more things accomplished. She asks the guards to let her know if Torres shows any signs of consciousness. Then she heads out.

She'll drop by the police station to process the five photographs, identifying them as subjects of interest in the murder of the landlord and asking that both she and CJ be notified of any hits. She also texts CJ to let him know about the thugs watching Torres and that she's filed the photos to try to get matches. Plus she let's him know they may be looking for a boss named "D."

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
(OOC: Let's try to sync up the time a bit.)

Kat

Kat finished up her workout and talking with David in the morning.

Jane

Her parents weren't all that happy about her blasť attitude about the dangers in being a hero. They talk to her about training and not running around by herself. They push to try to find out more about who she's out being a hero with and whether they'll be able to keep her safe.

Ali

Ali keeps busy until the evening with running the photos, etc...  The leader of the gang unit is out, but she leaves an email with him to find out more about any gang leader named D. That evening, she gets a hit on the one of the photos. His name is David "Mooch" Powell. Petty criminal, gang affiliations with the Crips out of Chester Hill, last known address is in Chester Hill.

John

John arrives at the hospital where his mother lives.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
Jane didn't tell her parents who the others were. She wanted to talk to them to make sure that they were okay with it, before she told her parents anything that might give away their secret identities.

She cleaned up after sparring, did her homework, and then asked her mother and older sister to go shopping with her. She'd need more clothes to be seen in public in her warrior woman alter-ego in something other than her armor.

She'd also see if her father wanted to patrol with her, so that she could show him that she'd be all right doing that.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
John sat in his truck in the parking lot, watching an ambulance crew restocking their rig.  He looked at the red scarf on the seat next to him, and couldn't stop wondering what he was doing, what he was trying to prove.  He turned towards his mom's wing, by now mostly dark.

It was probably all a mistake, he just remembered David's address wrong, surely the hospital would have known if it was fake, they have to send bills, or paperwork, some kind of communications.  Still, something nagged at him.  He shoved the athletic wrapped gloves into his pocket, and followed them with Knuckles scarf.

Once his mom was asleep, John moved from her room to sit in the commons, idly reading a magazine.  He'd been there enough that the staff didn't pay too much attention to him, if he didn't need anything.  He waited, but didn't know what for.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
With no messages from the others, she figures things have been quiet. At last, a quiet night and a good night's sleep. She heads home to spend the evening and night curled up with Finnegan. She'll read some before going to bed, and maybe she'll even find something to inspire a name for her new team. They need something to call themselves. Empire City... Guarding, protection, etc... "Imperial Guard" is too Star Wars. "The Avengers" would be copying the Avenger. Roman Empire... "The Centurions"? That could work with "Empire" of "Empire City" as well as being the heroes of the new century. Maybe something else is better? But she spends most the evening with take-out Chinese, and reading fiction while lying on the sofa with Finnegan on her belly.

Kat drove home on her motorcycle and go cleaned up. She gets something to eat and tries to look up on the net about this teacher David told her about. After she finds out what she can, she heads out during the day to see if she can meet the knife teacher.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
The day goes by.

Jane goes shopping with her mother and her sister. They buy some new casual clothes for her to go about in her Warrior Woman guise more incognito. Her mother brought up something that she'd never thought about. She didn't have any ID for this guise, so no buying liquor or trying to drive like this.  That evening, she and her father went on patrol and between them they stopped a mugger in the Harrows by Chester Hill. Her father was initially nervous about her getting out of the car and trying to take him on by herself, but when he saw her handling herself, he seemed to feel a little easier with her trying to be a hero.

Ali had a nice evening with a book, moderately good delivery chinese, and trying to keep Finnegan from going after the chicken and shrimp.

Kat looked up the name of the guy that David recommended. She didn't find much about him. He seemed to be a very private person or had worked hard to come off that way. However, when she searched the address, she found that it was a well recommended security equipment company that is open by appointment only. When she called the number, he said that he could fit  her in for an appointment in another 20 minutes. She headed over and found a nondescript storefront amid brownstones in Tower Hill. The man that opened the door was grizzled and wiry. She placed him in his late 40s and couldn't help but notice the controlled movement of a martial artist and the callouses on his hand as he shook her hand.

He asked how he could help her and she mentioned David's name. He nodded and locked the door behind her. "Will you be needing equipment or training?"

John was lulled by the repetitive sounds of the hospital as the night stretched. Something about the quiet steps moving purposely down the hall was enough to draw his attention. He looked up and saw a tall, handsome, dark-haired man walking down the hall toward Ms. Doe's room, passing in front of the common room. The man walked into Ms. Doe's room and closed the door behind him.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
Jane wished that she could lie better. Her mom's idea about driving and being able to buy booze for her friends brought to mind all sorts of ideas that she hadn't thought about before. Her mother missed the look on her face, but her sister did and shook her head slightly to let Jane know she knew what she was thinking of.

When she went on patrol with her Dad, she went as herself and changed into the armored WW persona once she and her dad had spotted problems.

After they either handed the mugger over to the cops or ran him off, she was happy to head home with her dad after showing him that she was okay doing this. She did ask, if he had any tips that he could do better.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
John in his Knuckles gear sneaks closer and slips through the wall into the bathroom. From there, he can here the man talking to the older woman.

"... anything, Claire?"

"I have all you can give me, David. My time is coming to end. You've been a good friend and John would be proud of you, if he could see you."

"Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable then?"

She started to chuckle, which turned into a wet cough. "Thank you, no. There's still much I need to tell you. All of you need to hear," she said, raising her voice slightly, which made it easier for John to hear. "The  fist has come together."

"Who are the rest of them? I found two, I think."

"They will reveal themselves. They will need help to defeat the rising evil."

"Who's the evil? You know I hate when you don't just tell me."

"And you know that my abilities don't let me be as direct as you might like. There is another with the beginnings of my gifts. Talk to him. He will be able to help you."

Unfortunately, there wasn't much more of use after that Ms. Doe/Claire started to get a little confused and it was mostly David trying to make her comfortable and talking about the old days and mutual friends.

Kat is led into the building and through a door into what seems to be a small martial arts studio. There are scarred, soft wooden targets on the walls. The man, Moshe Rabin asks her to wait for a moment and brings in a small case of throwing knives that he sets on a small table.

"Are you looking for just throwing knives? Or will you be knife fighting as well? When knife fighting you want a hilt to protect your hand and deflect strikes. They do tend to throw off the aerodynamics, when throwing them and that must be countered."

Once he found out what she was looking for, he showed her different weighted knives, showed her how to test the balance and then showed her how to throw them. He was scarily accurate even at 15y from the target. After seeing him throw, he asked her to throw her knives at the targets. She wasn't awful, but no where near him, yet. He corrected her form and had her do it again.

After twenty minutes, she had the beginnings of what she was going to need to practice and continue practicing.

Ali and Jane turned in, in their respective homes.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
Kat practices as she talks to Moshe Rabin "I want to learn both but I feel my martial arts skills allow me to hand someone who is close to me. What my skills don't let me do is reach out and hit someone at a distance. Especially if I need to help someone. I admit, I don't worry about myself too much"

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
John is relieved at the tone of the conversation.  He wasn't sure what he would have done if the man had been predatory, but he was glad he didn't need to figure it out.   When she says 'all you need to hear' he wonders if she knows he is there and listening.  He smiles a little under his scarf, she probably does.  Claire, David, John. he thinks wondering what the connection between them is.  The names seemed genuine, not alter egos, there was a history there.

As Claire begins sundowning, John steps back into the hall, and takes his seat again, where he could get a good look at David when he steps out.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
Kat finished up the beginning of training with Rabin. He promised that he could continue with her training, but asked how often she'd like to meet. And he put out the three throwing knives. There was no mention of payment. He did say that if she's just throwing them, shuriken or other razored throwing objects might be a better bet for her requirements.

John settled back down with his book and waited for David to walk past the common room. After twenty minutes, he wondered where he was and checked back on Claire. David was gone.

Without looking at the door, Claire said, "You missed him. Something came up and he was needed. It's late. I should be able to talk tomorrow for a bit, but now I'm tired. Just trying to hold myself together for these chats can be exhausting."

Kat grins "I guess that would be fine. I could use throwing stars and just learn knife separately. I think this is a lot of fun and when I am working, they will come in handy" she sighs "So, what am I going to owe you for this?"

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
Moshe spoke with Kat, "Don't worry about that. Our mutual friend is taking care of that initially. If you will be using throwing stars, let's have you try these out."  He brought out another case and had her test those to find the right weight and feel for herself.

He showed her how to take them and throw them without cutting her hands, which was a little harder than she thought.

Claire spoke with John. "Good night. Go treat yourself to some breakfast in the morning. You'll enjoy the conversation."

"Breakfast..." he repeats.  There were times he felt a pawn, just a piece of a larger game playing out around him.

He went home, and poured himself a beer.  It was late, but he couldn't really sleep anyway.  He say at the computer and typed. 'David Claire John Avenger' into the search box.  It didn't escape him that they might be the old guard, and his fist the new.

Re: Chapter Five: And Now What?
John found web sites devoted to the plots of movies and novels.  Some of them were normal pop culture fare, but a few were direct to video/TV Movies about the Empire City hero: The Avenger.

One of the actresses in the Lifetime movie was a young Clare Dane.
