Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's
John starts having second thoughts, a gun going off in one's face, even you know it can't hurt you, sure makes you think.  These guys were out of his league, he wasn't up against the usual street toughs.  The kind of guy that can pull the trigger with the barrel at another person's face is a special kind of bad.

He blinks to clear his eyes of the flash.  "New game." he says.  "How 'bout follow the leader. D's that way, right?" He gestures towards the door they came out of.  He starts off at a full sprint, running right through the guy that shot him.

Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's

Neither of them rose to the bait and looked toward where he pointed. Their eyes stayed on him. He rushed toward the door (through one of the roof guards) and did his best to disappear.  The one that he ran through moved to stand in front of the door down to the building.

"He is definitely insubstantial. Either a teleporter or also has the ability to disappear."

The two of them stay on the roof.

John and Ali hear a car drive off from in front of the building.

Knuckles walks through the door to find a narrow stairwell downstairs. There's a nervous looking guy wearing crips colors at the bottom of the stairs. Knuckles walks through him and into the hall way. The  crip shifted as Knuckles walked past and down the hall. He turned, looking right at Knuckles. Knuckles walked further and the guy stared. "Oh fuck," he whispered. "HE"S HERE!" he screamed.

Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's
ooc: apparently I thought the word 'guys', but my fingers didn't get the message.  Yes, how many were in the stairs.

Things were really starting to piss John off, he slips back into solid, only long enough to hit the guy with a cheap shot.  It would have got him kicked out of the ring, but this wasn't a boxing match.  "Shut it!" he snarls, fearing that D had already split.

Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's
RETCONNED

Knuckles turned and paused by the shouting crip, before turning solid and cold cocking the guy. The guy staggered back from the punch in the gut. Knuckles would have been able to hit harder, if he'd set himself a bit more, but such was life.

The crip continued to scream that he was here and tried to grab Knuckles. He's got Knuckles' arm and he's doing his best to jerk him close.

Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's
RETCONNED

John let the guy pull him close.  In close wasn't a place you wanted to let a boxer to be as he worked the guy towards the ropes, or in this case the wall, pinning him between the wall and Knuckle's flurry of body blows.

If he was lucky the guy would gain a little cred for having taken on the intruder and survived.

Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's
Knuckles switched from his insubstantial form into his normal, more solid form.

He appeared in front of the young man with his arm cocked back. The crip was taken aback a bit and put up his hands to defend himself. Knuckles gave him a cheap shot to the gut.

The crip continued to scream and grabbed at Knuckles. He grabbed his arm and pulled him in close.

Knuckles let the guy pull him close. In close wasn't a place you wanted a boxer to be. He worked the guy toward the ropes, or in this case, the wall, pinning him between the wall and Knuckles flurry of body blows.

Knuckles pounded on the man with two solid blows to the guts.  The crip groaned and sank to his knees, his breath knocked out of him.

Unfortunately, Knuckles' attention was on laying the beatdown and he wasn't able to turn insubstantial this turn. He can hear the door at the top of the stairs opening. And the roof guards -- the well-armed and well-trained roof guards -- will be opening the door and seeing him this round.  He can also hear people coming running.

Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's
Knuckles takes a deep breath, glancing at the top of the stairs.  He knew he was still over matched against those two, and that the place would soon be crawling with crips.   John lunges down the hall, trying to get out of line of sight of the upper door and ghosting again.

Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's
Knuckles is feeling really worried, as he moved through the building. He felt much better as he ghosted again and disappeared from sight. He heard the door open above him and the guys rushing down the stairs.

He walked down the hallway. This floor seems to be apartments or something above the building below. Some angry looking (and dangerous looking) men and women are spilling into the hall at the now-unconscious crip's screams. There's no elevator, but there were two stairwells that can take him down. The stairwell he took down led down to the street.

Knuckles watches the hornet's nest he seemed to have stirred up with interest.  It wasn't the plan, but hopefully he can salvage something from it.  He works at calming down, the slowing the adrenaline that had been building.

Ali texts, "Going to car while I can sneak away. See you there." Then Ali makes her way back, with the priority being unseen as opposed to speed.

Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's
Ali sneaks off without being seen, after sending her text. A few moments later, she gets a text from the Kat.

Knuckles takes some time to walk around unseen and unnoticed. He sees the crips swarming the halls. He gets an idea which of the older (or in a couple of cases young, but very dangerous looking) members are in charge at the moment. He sees that downstairs in the bar there is an area in the back where there are a few tables where presumably gang members used to sit.

He overhears a few of them talking about what happened and trying to figure out what was going on. He heard that someone had been meeting with D earlier. That D and his guest took off when the craziness started on the roof. They don't know what's going to happen with the clubhouse.

Only the guys upstairs have earbuds and by the time he went back upstairs after exploring, they were gone.

When Ali gets back to the car she waits for a private moment to change clothes back quickly. Then, while waiting for Knuckles, she texts Kat back.

John makes his way back to the truck. "Screwed that up." he said, crawling into the drivers seat.  "But they were pros,  I think we're barking up the right tree.". He relates what he has found.  "I think the guards work for whomever D was meeting with.  they seemed over qualified to be gang bangers."

"I agree, those guards seemed really professional. Moreover, they didn't seem fazed by your talents. We'll have to be really careful going forward... It seems like what we need to do is scare them again so D and whoever he's meeting with run like tonight. Then, if we're watching as they run, we can identify who is with D... Related to that, Kat texted me. They ran into trouble but got out OK. I think we should meet up to share what we found. Then we should get some rest."

Re: Chapter Seven (A): Tooti's
John puts the truck in gear.  "They put a gun in my face, and shot me." he says, still able to smell the gunpowder.  "I'm not sure about the tear gas, I've never tried it while ghosting.  Flash bang would have worked." he comments about her text.  "Need to figure something about that kind of stuff.  And I think I need some tactics training.  I felt a little helpless on the roof." he glances over to Ali.  "Bad thing about being a ghost, can't affect anything without being vulnerable, and we might have to play hardball with them."

He turns his attention back to the road.  "Where are the girls?"

Ali tells John where to meet the others.

It's probably not that long a drive, but if John's fairly quiet and it lasts Ali will probably start humming tunes.

"Did you get those pictures of the office I sent? Did any of the phone numbers seem familiar?  There was guns, money and drugs in the file cabinet, but it was locked."  John asks as they drive, he keeps an eye on the rear view mirror, just as a precaution.  "How did you know about the flashbang?  Could you hear their earbuds?  We need to get something like that."

"Oh, the flashbang. Radio or phone - not sure which. But yes, that's essentially how I heard it. I suspect they may have been getting orders from D and whoever left with him...

"As for tactics, I don't know how well mine would work for the rest of you. Maybe fine for Kat. My preference is to take out the lighting. I wouldn't mind fighting in a pitch black room."

"No, I can't see in the dark. But I can fight pretty well in it," says Ali as she starts flipping through her phone to look at the pictures she hadn't had a chance to review yet. It's unlikely she'll recognize any numbers, but maybe...
