Re: Jane Intro

"Who are you?" the little girl asked. "Billy won't get up."

There was a window in the room. There were bars on it, but she couldn't see more through the smoke.

"I'll open the door and we'll get him down," she said. "I promise."

She tried to figure out how to open the window and unlock or open the bars.

Re: Jane Intro

She opens the window and gets the gate unlocked and swung out of the way. She can see a couple of people on the street, gawking. You're on the second floor (about 8y off the ground).

Re: Jane Intro
She looked down and figured that jumping from their height wouldn't kill the kids, but it could hurt them. There were some people out there. "Kids coming down!" she shouted. "Get ready to catch them."

She got ready to toss the mobile kid out and then the unconscious one.

Even better would be to half hang out the window and do her best to hand the kids off.

Re: Jane Intro
The people outside slowly moved to get into position, shocked at what she'd said and being called to help. When she lowered or tossed down the kids, hopefully, they'd be in position.
The kid that was awake needed some prodding, she was worried about leaving her brother there, but she's able to lift and climb out the  window with the kid. She hands the kid down with only a 3y drop.

The crowd got the kid without much trouble. The unconscious kid will be harder.

Re: Jane Intro
With one kid on the street, Warrior Woman climbed back inside and went to get the other kid. Assumably the smoke was getting harder to see in, but she hoped to find a blanket or a sheet to use to lower the unconscious kid even farther to assure he didn't get hurt.

Re: Jane Intro
There was a bed in the room. She quickly stripped the sheets and ripped the sheet apart with no trouble. She was able to tie the kid in the sheets and which will give her another three yards to the ground.  By the time she got to the window, the people down on the ground were in position. Between all of them, the unconscious kid was on the ground.

With the kids taken car of, she went back to try to find the woman with the cane and try to help get her downstairs.

Re: Jane Intro
The older woman seems to be unconscious and unresponsive. Warrior Woman can pick her up without much trouble and move her to the room by the window where she dropped the kids.  The fire department arrived. She couldn't hear them over the fire. There's a fire truck, an EMT vehicle, and a couple of prowl cars. She can see her dad downstairs in his uniform as one of the cops.

The bed still has a fitted sheet on it and a blanket, which would be much harder to rip than the sheet.

Re: Jane Intro
She carries the woman to the window and yells to the police and fire people that she has an unconscious woman and that the stairs are on fire. With luck, they'll set up something to catch the woman.

Re: Jane Intro
The fire department calls out using a bullhorn to facilitate her hearing them. "Hang on! Give us a moment to set up the ladder truck. We'll get you both out of there!"

As quickly, as they could, they got the ladder set up and a couple of fire fighters up into the room. They motioned for Warrior Woman to move back, while they widened the window to help them get out. A few minutes work with their fire axe and the area was big enough for the firefighters to get in, get the woman some oxygen and they took control of the situation.

They were surprised that Warrior Woman could breathe fine in the middle of the smoke. After the unconscious woman had been taken down, Warrior Woman went down and the fire fighters went to work dealing with the fire and keeping it from spreading.

However, she now had to deal with the police and fire personnel outside. As a senior officer, her father walked over to her. "And you are?" he asked.

She thought about something her father had said about heroes in the past. "Just an person in the right time and place to help," she said, looking around to see where Jane and Linda were.

She spotted Linda and Jane back with the crowd behind the line. Her father looked over to see who she was looking at.

"Glad you were here to help. But lady, leave this sort of thing to the professionals. You could have been hurt. Hurt badly."

"Yes, D... Sir," she said, "Like I said, I was just in the right place at the right time. Do you need me for anything else? I'd like to get home to my family."

Her father looked around to see if any of the other police officers or fire fighters had questions for her. The assistant fire chief was walking toward her. He had some questions about the building and what she'd seen inside. Once she answered those questions, she was free to go.

Warrior Woman headed off to find a place where she could hide and change. And then Jane came back to find her sister and her friend.

"Oh my god!," her sister said. "That was awesome. Are you okay?" she asked.

In Linda's room, the girls talk. They excitedly want every detail and Jane is happy to share it with them. Even though her other self was in the building and not her, Jane found she still smelled of smoke.

The Harrows -- Carpenter Home -- Much Later

Jane hears her father come home and can hear her parents talking downstairs. She sneaks out of her room to hear more clearly.

"...got powers."

"We knew that could happen. That's what he told us when we adopted her."

"What are we going to do?"

"The same thing we always do. We love her. But I'll make the call. He might be able to help her train and keep her from being hurt."

"She mentioned there were others like her."

Jane could hear her father sigh. "Of course, there are. I wonder if they're all kids."

"She didn't say."

"I'll make the call. Do we have any dinner left?"

"It's too late to eat. I'll make you some cocoa."

"Thanks, baby."

Jane heard her father open the door to the basement and head down to  his office. Her mother was rattling around in the kitchen.

Re: Chapter Two: Addendum
In the Carpenter home, her mother usually put books, bags or whatever the kids had left about during the evening so that they wouldn't forget them in the morning. Trying to be quiet, she stuck to the wall to avoid making noise. Unfortunately, she managed to topple some books making a clatter that her mother noticed, looking out from the kitchen.

"What are you doing up?" she asked.

"Uh... I had to go to the bathroom."

"What's wrong with the bathroom upstairs?"

"I just wanted to make sure we were okay. I dumped a lot on you."

"One thing hasn't changed. We love you and want the best for you, but right now we're trying to figure out what we're going to do. We're your parents and we want you safe. Your father is going to want to talk to you in the morning. But for the moment, it's late. Go get some sleep. You have school in the morning."

Jane wanted to find out what was going on, but couldn't think of a way of doing it without getting caught, so she went up to her room.
