Juan, Chris K
Before reaching Lonoke School, the group hits a few more points marked on the map - two churches and a police station. The police department is a surprisingly small and unsurprisingly empty building squeezed into onto a street corner. All of the weapons, cars, and equipment were probably taken long ago, either by the police themselves or others raiding the building. Every desk drawer, file cabinet, and other container hangs open, as the location was clearly searched repeatedly and exhaustively by others in the preceding weeks. The two churches both look like they were once emergency aid stations, now abandoned; one looks like someone deliberately packed up everything useful and left in an orderly fashion, but the other is a scene of chaos, either torn apart by the ravenous dead or opportunistic living. Both have been carefully picked over for supplies.
Perhaps the most telling sign that these locations were exhausted long ago is the paucity of undead they find at the sites. Generally, choice locations tend to retain at least a modest collection of walkers simply because a lot of people tend to gather and die at them, but the group only finds occasional - and easily dispatched - shambling figures. Thomas and Chuck are both on the ball, pointing out walkers almost immediately, and the melee-wielding members of the group manage to take them out without any shots fired.
Juan and Chris K can both hear pessimistic mutters from their groups after the last bust, but Chuck immediately clamps down on any dissent in his line.
"We're wasting our time with this day-one shit," Leslie gripes after the second church. "All the good stuff's in someone's house by now. We should look for some please surrounded by biter corpses."
"Yeah, right," Clyde answers her. "You know what look a lot like biter corpses? Scavenger corpses."
However, when the group finally reaches Lonoke School, everyone can tell things are different. From a distance, they can see several cars, trucks, and even farm equipment parked in the parking lot and surrounding streets. When they get closer, they see that the windows have crudely but effectively reinforced with bars and grates to prevent anyone from getting in or out without using the doors. However, they don't see any people.
A hand-painted banner hangs above the entrance. It looks like the sort of thing the school would use to announce a bake sale, but instead reads:
