Re: First Contact: Riallor V
While all the others were watching the main door Amber turned and moved towards the vestry and the area where most churches hosed the dead and the cellars. She'd suddenly had a thought that this might might be a diversion allowing the enemy to take them from the rear.

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
Sitting in her corner, Anita waited for the Sarg to get obliterated and torn to shreds. Oddly enough, that didn't happen. Shifting her gaze from the door, she looked around the cathedral before almost making a terrified noise. This was not good. Definitely not good.

"Uh... What's going on?"

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
Commissar Vyn nodded and vaulted over the pew that he had been using for personal cover, making to join Olivares in her search. He agreed that they should investigate what was going on here. It was eerily similar to their encounter outside the hamlet yesterday morning and perhaps the battle that the other squad had engaged in. "Yes, two parties. One to remain vigilant here, and we should circle the cathedral to make sure that they are not trying to find another entrance." Aleksandr fixed his cloak, buttoning the long black trenchcoat up the front from his waist to his collar and put his sword within its sheath. His bolt pistol remained held in hand as he joined Polly. He turned back to Valentine and Karamanlis, waiting for them to join.

Where Polly goes we go, Kayla states as a matter-of-fact, even as she joins Polly.

The look on her face is that of someone who has been cheated, clearly a boiling rage within as Kanon looks around.

When she gets close enough that mainly only Polly will hear, the big gunner murmurs between gritted teeth, Another fucking bug hunt...

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
"Tell me about it," Polly whispers back. Fondling Kayla would be her preferred course of action as opposed to walking into a probably ambush. But that wasn't how the universe worked, was it?

She raises her voice to address the rest of the troops.

"Kayla, I distinctly remember naming the people who were supposed to follow me and you weren't among them. Then again, if we run into a horde of savage mutant cannibals I'd rather have you with us. Commissar, your suggestion has been received and noted. Kayla will be covering myself, the Commissar, Gennie, Amber and friends as we circle the cathedral. Anita and Ravia will hold the fort here. Remember, if you see any trouble at all, don't bother shouting -  start shooting. We ready?"

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
Well, that was clear and concise enough. "Yes Ma'am." Anita replied smoothly as she kept her weapon trained on the door. Looked like she was stuck alone with her squadmates again. Well, they hadn't died last time, so maybe that wouldn't happen this time either. Besides, she liked them around. Medics helped patch you up if you were wounded. Less chance of bleeding out with a couple of them around.

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
Genevie nodded slowly moving from her makeshift fighting position to join up with Pauline for the patrol, her heart began to slow down a little bit and her adrenaline buzz began to fade as she moved. Which was probably the opposite reaction for most people but she had always prefered doing something to waiting until something came and did things to you, just sitting and waiting for trouble scared her more than getting out there in the darkness and trying to hunt it down. "Ready sarge."

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
Kayla's face compresses into a scowl, but she says nothing. Instead she looks around, finds a pedestal that will provide both cover and line of sight along most of the mobile party's route and moves to it.

Getting there she reaches forward and extends the bipod at the front of the bolter. She then kneel's down behind the cover and waits.

Yuule scrambles after her gunner, saying nothing and pointed ly avoiding any physical contact with Gunner Kanon.

Yuulehas a puzzled look on her face, as if trying to remember a word from a crossword puzzle.

Internally, Yuule is asking herself, What the term for anger that is beyond "furious"? Seething? Enraged? Livid?

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
"Let's move out," Polly says. Maybe she doesn't notice Kayla's annoyance, or she doesn't care to acknowledge it; either way, they had to secure their perimeter or resolving any disputes or misunderstandings between them would be secondary to actually being alive to resolve them in.

She leads the way with the Commissar, glancing around and behind her every few steps to make sure the invisible mutant cannibals haven't started swarming from behind them.

The Apostalakis sisters take up positions on each side of the cathedral doorway. Their lasguns pointed down the street to cover the rest of the squad as they search for the vanished enemy forces.

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
In the cold of the night you take your nervous steps in the cold heart of the darkness, now the light of the moon has dimmed and long shadows, where present, adorn the deserted town, somehow the eerie silence of the town makes matters worst.

Checking the damage done to the cathedral makes you stop on your tracks, the heavy masonry lays in ruins, some of the upper floor collapsed on the side of the cathedral, the rest of the cathedral looks bruised and broken, blackened rock dots the structure where before a pure white marble covered it. You begin to wonder what kind of weapons would have to been used here, as the earth around the cathedral seems to be only disturbed mildly.  What footprints the enemy could have left you find none, nor do any sing someone or something stood in front of the cathedral.

Circling the cathedral seems easier said than done as you canít shake the feeling of dread and being observed, your nervousness is only placated by your ire, angry at the enemy, angry at them for destroying the Emperorís house, angry at not finding anything and angry with yourself. Keeping up with your pace the rest of the team seems to be feeling like you, the emotions painted on their faces.  And then you find yourself back where you started, nothing, not a single clue as to what happened, you feel the rage boiling in your innards, fixated on the deserted town, on the ruined cathedral.

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
"Whoop-dee-doo, it's fucking nothing," Polly curses. "Damn, I don't know what to make of this. We circled around and left ourselves wide open; if anything, an ambush should have been sprung at some point. But... nothing. Damn. Anyone?"

She gestures to the troopers to head back in to preserve their strength for now. No point running themselves ragged chasing ghosts and shadows.

"I don't know what sort of foul witchcraft this may be, but our exposure to it may be a detriment to our existance if we don't discover its source and destroy it, sergeant," he spoke in hushed tones to Sgt Olivares as they circled the cathedral. "The damage is real enough, but there are no signs of the enemy. No footprints. No shell casings or power packs."

"And no traces to follow them with. It seems to me that the next time we're contacted like this, we ought to take the battle to them and see if we can't pursue the foe back to whichever hole they came from."

Genevie feel easily into the familiar search patterns of a patrol keeping her weapon up and constantly scanning the darkness for potential threats that might burst fourth, her heart pounded fast preparing her for the time when she would need to react quickly either to enemy fire or the grasping hands of some twisted mutant. Despite being out here in the dark away from the thick stone walls and the light of the Cathedral she felt calmer now, she was hunting the enemy as much as he was hunting her instead of just huddling in a hole

"I am not sure that it is anything as simple as that," he said as they came back around to where their search had started. Aleks had several theories as to what was going on around them, but some of them could he share with the soldiers. "Whatever is doing this, if it wanted to harm us physically it would have done so. Perhaps it is merely a trick of some sort to unnerve us, to keep us from resting, to make us weary of our mission."

Anita pretty much stayed where she was, her sweat slowly sticking her undershirt back to her body. At least she smelled wonderful. Giving a dry chuckle at that thought, she kept her massive cannon trained on the door, watching and waiting.

"It could be. It's a pretty good explanation. But to deal with the witch we have to find it first, and if we don't know where it is, worrying will just waste our energy for no good reason. So... get a good rest, we'll need it?"

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
Slumber comes erratically, as soon as you feel signing off to sleep you immediately awake, fearful for the enemy, who still lingers in the cold night, out there, unseen. For the brief chances you get at actual sleep you have a dreamless night, yet you can't shake the unnerving feeling of dread and you can't shake the goosebumps that frequently travel along your weary back, the cold floor is your only anchor, grounding you in the waning comfort of knowing you are still alive for the moment.

In one of the moments you realize you are awake your eyes are assailed by a faint ray of light, the sun shining bright through the cracks and holes the previous battle has left, the cold air of the morning seeping through the cathedral chilling the floor and body with it, urging you to wake up for good, still weary and tired you know the faint seconds your body got of sleep will keep you going for today.

Polly yawns and stretches. This sucked. No two ways about it. Still, as the old sayign went, when you're going through hell, keep going.

"Rise and shine, folks. Do your personal admin, and then we're going to clear this cathedral and set up a transmission and observation point as high as possible here."

Re: First Contact: Riallor V
Genevie rolled slowly out her own pallet and let out a soft moan as she felt muscles sore from sleeping on the ground protest at the sudden need for movement, she should be used to this by now but last night had been rough for her with little sleep and more than a little bit of wariness. So of course the sleep had been of the worst kind which made the waking all the worse, the blonde haired fighting woman let out another soft moan as she did some basic stretches to try and get her body feeling like it could actually move without pain. After that she began policing up her gear, long training had taught her to do that before doing in of her morning sanitation protocols. "Five by five, sergeant."
