The Urdroth
Homeplanet

Name: Urdroth

Population: 0.268 billion

Atmosphere and Climate:
Primary Composition: Trace atmosphere of hydrogen, helium, and oxygen
     Atmospheric Mass: 0.03 Earths
     Atmospheric Pressure: Negligible
Average surface temperature: -260F or 110K.
     Winds: No winds.
     Humidity: No humidity.
     Precipitation:  No precipitation.

World Size:
Density: 0.94 Earths (small iron core, weak magnetosphere)
     Diameter: 5,146 miles (0.65 Earths)
     Surface Gravity: 0.611 G's

Rotation and Orbital Periods:
Urdroth is a sattelite of the gas giant Eybliea.
Orbital period around Eybliea: 5.44 Earth days
Rotation: 5.44 Earth days (tidally locked)
Length of orbit around local star: 14.37 Earth years
Axial tilt: 0 (varies by up to 7 during its orbit around Eybliea)

Land Coverage:
The surface of the planet is a frozen wasteland exposed to the vacuum of space.  The crust is composed of frozen water about 2000 feet thick.  The crust undergoes plate tectonics which at times allow liquid water to spill out onto the surface.  Vast canyons and spires of ice can be found across the surface.

Hydrographic coverage:
Beneath the frozen crust lies an ocean of salt water.  It spans the entire planet.  The ocean averages about 44F (279K).  Currents caused by tidal forces circulate water and nutrients across the ocean.

Ecosystems:
There are a variety of ecosystems in the ocean of Urdroth.  Ocean vents can be found in many places.  Many forms of life congregate around these vents that provide heat, nutrients, and minerals.  Deep ocean ravines also sometimes provide a source of heat.  There are miles and miles of abyssal plains.  Unique ecosystems also form on or near the underside of the ice crust.  This area provides the most oxygen-rich environment.  It can also be unstable, as the crust sometimes experiences upheavals, such as cracking, flipping, or subducting.

Biological and Psychological Traits
Biology
Having evolved on a moon where no light penetrates the ocean depths, the Urdroth body and behaviors adapted to become the top predators of their environment.  This species is an invertebrate with three tentacles.  The body of an Urdroth is roughly spheroid.  Each of the tentacles is broad and flat, about 3 inches thick and 3 feet wide near the middle of their length, coming to a point at their end.  Fully grown individuals are about 9 feet in length and they can weigh approximately 750 lbs.

Urdroth evolved as pouncing predators.  They wait for prey to pass by and then create a cavity with their tentacles.  When the prey is trapped inside the cavity, the Urdroth releases a bioelectric shock.  Because no light reaches the ocean, no species on the moon evolved eyes but almost all of them have an electrical and magnetic sense capable of detecting other species.  Every animal has a specific electric signature which can be detected.  Urdroth can manipulate their own signature to make it appear to belong to a smaller animal, luring prey into a false sense of safety.  They also posses a keen sense of hearing.  Their magnetic sense allowed them to keep track of time by feeling the shifting fields of both Urdroth and Eybliea.  Urdroth also use their electrical and magnetic senses to communicate.

Three sexes are present in the species.  While females and males are very similar in all respects, the third, asexual sex differs in significant aspects.  The most apparent difference are their physical characteristics.  Asexual individuals, while born the same size as every others, only grow up to 3 feet long and 120 lbs.  Instead of the normal three tentacles of males and females, asexuals have 4 tentacles.  The most notable difference between sexes is their psionic abilities.  All asexuals have a minor psionic talent, while females and males have no psionic abilities at all.  Because of these minor talents, they are usually just referred to as "psions."

Males seek out females during particular mating seasons. Females are responsible for choosing out their preferred mate.  During the intervening years, males spend most of their time collecting groups of psions and building up a base of power.  Group composition varies widely from one individual to another.  Some males concentrate on collecting psions with one specific talent while others may focus on generalizing.  When the time comes to mate, the female chooses out a male based on the group of psions he has gathered.  The psions then imprint their abilities on the next group of offspring.  These offspring are more likely to have their parent's psionic abilities than any other ability.  Thus both the physical and mental characteristics of all involved are passed on to another generation.  This mating happens once an Urdrothian year, or once every 14 Earth years.  Hundreds are born at once and measure about an inch in length.  They are left to fend for themselves in the ocean.

Male and female Urdroth live for about 240 Earth years and reach full maturity at age 25.  Psionss live for about 40 Earth years and reach full maturity at age 10.

Psychology
Urdroth are impressively patient beings.  This patience evolved out of necessity in their ancient past.  An impatient Urdroth would miss a meal and risk starvation.  They are also single-minded (though slow) thinkers and will focus on one task until its completion.  Creativity also serves them well.  Urdroth do not sleep but do have times of inactivity.

Unlike many other species in the galaxy, they have little tolerance for those that are not their own.  Though they don't display hatred toward other species, they will often refuse to work with them.  They work exceptionally well with others of their kind, however.  They also tend to respect females of other species more than they respect males, if they have bothered at all to notice the differences between the two.

History and Culture
Most of the Urdroth progression has relied on the psionic talents of their species.  Throughout their history, they have been a fairly social species.  They formed tribes and clans.  They had their leaders and followers.  In Urdroth culture, females are highly revered and usually serve as the leaders of their clan.  Several males would help the female carry out her will with the help of their groups of psions.  All are of roughly equal intelligence, but the females seem to carry the most creativity.  It is important in Urdroth culture for an individual to know their place in their clan.  While some species may find it undesirable to exist for the sole purpose of serving another's will, the males and psions find fulfillment in it.

Roving clans were common in the early history of Urdroth civilization.  These clans often had different specialties that they were known for and trade occurred on a regular basis.  The ability to manufacture tools stems from the psions.  Their abilities allowed the creation of advanced pieces of equipment that require metallurgical skills and practices.

For many millennia, the Urdroth civilization evolved with little concept of what lay beyond the roof of their world.  There were some records of enormous openings forming in the roof at times and brave individuals willing to reach their tentacles into the nothingness beyond, but most of these were held as mythical tales from the ancient past.  No similar event had occurred in nearly 4000 years.  Eventually, science was able to confirm that some pieces of Urdroth's crust were newer than others, suggesting that something may lie above them.  Sensitive instruments measured electromagnetic variances originating from great distances away.  Centuries later, the first Urdroth drilled through their crust to the surface above and discovered a new and terrifying universe to them.  They agreed, as a society, to record this and continue their lives beneath the surface of Urdroth.

The Urdroth may have continued this existence for thousand of years had it not been for the Oprid.  Nearly 500 years ago, the Oprid colonized a planet in the same system of the Urdroth.  As they surveyed the system, they stumbled upon a unique form of life.  Initially, the Oprid did not know what to make of the Urdroth.  The Urdroth had little interest in interactions with the Ascendancy or space exploration.  As the Urdroth were not a space-faring race and did not wish contact with other species, the Oprid allowed them to continue their existence as it had always been.  This arrangement lasted for about 200 years, until Zin scouts began entering the system.

The Urdroth were fortunate.  The Oprid had already seen two previous cases of Zin infection and knew what the scouts meant and they knew that with their current defense infrastructure, they would not be able to repel the infection.  They offered the Urdroth evacuation from their home.  Many refused, hoping the Zin would overlook the cold, distant moon they called home.  Most, however, accepted the offer.  Some ships were outfitted specifically for the Urdroth and they left the system, now officially becoming members of the Ascendancy.

To this day, the Urdroth have not returned to their true home, though they have found some worlds that support their way of life.  They are also adept at building elegant, yet functional, space habitats for themselves and for other races.  An Urdroth crew is a prized complement on any ship, as the psions can lend their talents to any number of tasks, not least of all in the navigation of hyperspace.

As a species, they yearn for the day they can return home, but the prospects of reclaiming a fully infected world are still minimal.
