The Epsians

Name: Fenia

Population: 1.226 billion

Atmosphere and Climate:
     Primary Composition: Nitrogen/Oxygen.
     Atmospheric Mass: 1.1 Earths
     Atmospheric Pressure: 0.932 atm (Thin)
     Average temperature: 67F or 292K.
Winds: Winds are fairly constant, but don't usually reach high speeds.
Humidity: High humidity throughout the year.
Precipitation:  High precipitation throughout the year.

World Size:
Density: 1.14 Earths (large iron core, active magnetosphere)
     Diameter: 7,284 miles (0.92 Earths)
     Surface Gravity: 1.049 G's

Rotation and Orbital Periods:
     Orbital period: 407.7 days
     Rotation: 31.7 hours
Length of year measured in local days: 308.7
     Axial tilt: 4

Hydrographic Coverage:
91% water.  Most of the planet is covered in water.  Ice caps cover the north and south pole the whole year.  Very little fresh water present on the planet.

Land Coverage:
9%.  Most of the land lies in one chain of islands at about 16 south of the equator.  Consists of one major island and thousands of small islands.  Other small chains are located across the globe.

The main land ecosystem present is a tropical forest, though species can vary greatly from island to island.  Huge trees several hundred feet tall often grow on the leeward side of islands, supporting a vast array of life.  Much of the life on Fenia is either capable of flying, swimming, or both.

Biological and Psychological Traits
Epsians are a species of gathering herbivores, finding high-energy food sources in the trees of their ancestral forests.  They have four legs, two front and two rear, and two winged appendages.  All of their legs have strong and dextrous hands that they can use to hang onto trees and collect food at the same time.  Their winged appendages, located in the middle of their back, allow them short flights that can get them about 300 feet.  Their torso is flattened and oblong which assists them while flying and their feathered bodies increase surface area which also assists in flight.  They are partial quadrupeds; they have the ability to stand and walk on their hind legs for a duration of time, but their rear hands are not capable of manipulating anything while they are standing.  Their standing height is about 3 feet tall and they weigh around 22 pounds.  Their tails are about 2 feet long.

Their eyes are located on top of their body and are spaced apart to be able to notice predators.  The eyes of an Epsian are capable seeing into the infrared spectrum, allowing them to notice heat signatures.  Their hearing is also acute, giving them another advantage over potential predators.  Many also possess psionic abilities.  These usually manifest in the form of psychokinesis, the ability to convert mental energy into physical energy, and healing, the ability to heal oneself and others of physical ailments and damage.  Normal communication is conducted through a complex set of whistles, clicks, and other high-pitched calls.  Thus, their language cannot be replicated by human speech organs, but translators help overcome that difficulty.

Epsians live for about 50 of their years, which is about 55 Earth years.  They mature quickly, at about age 9.  After a couple mates, they produce one egg.  The couple is mated until the child is mature, at which point they separate and are free to find a new mate, if they choose.  Most individuals choose to have 2 to 3 children in their lifetime and spend the last few years of their life with no mate or children.

An individual is most often identified by the color of their feathers and tail plumage.  They have long tails that help them balance in the air and on trees, and these are covered in ornate patterns and colors, varying highly from one individual to the next.

As would be expected from a short-lived species, Epsians are quick thinkers.  They often become distracted if they have multiple tasks to complete at once.  They are also dangerously curious, doing things they know are hazardous simply for the sake of knowledge.  In addition, individuals are often proud of themselves and their accomplishments.  Because of this, they sometimes have trouble accepting orders from people who are less accomplished than them.  This makes them great explorers, but not so great soldiers.  They travel in flocks and feel a deep depression if they are in groups any smaller than four.

In comparison to the Oprid, they are very inventive.  They will try new ideas even if they aren't the best ideas.  Combined with their intense curiosity, this can lead to either disastrous failures or incredible successes.  The Oprid value Epsians for this quality and do their best to temper the terrible ideas and massive failures.

History and Culture
Evolving on land on a planet 91% covered in water was not an easy task for the Epsians.  Instead of relying on the land, they evolved to take advantage of the sky.  Instead of horizontal expansion, they expanded upward, into the massive trees of Fenia.  The trees produced more food than was available on the ground, so they gained the ability to climb the trees and fly short distances across the canopies.  Some of the largest trees of Fenia have wide or flat limbs that allowed Epsians to build villages, a necessary step in fending off larger predators and maintaining permanent settlements.  They remained in a relative "stone age" for longer than humans, but once their culture began advancing, it moved at a furious pace.

Space was always an issue on Fenia.  Many wars were fought over resources and living spaces.  The Epsians built enormous skyscrapers to house their booming population, but it was never enough.  Finally, the Epsians looked to space to solve their problems.  They created huge space stations where they were truly free to fly the skies.  They hollowed out every sizable asteroid in their system and used the resources to build thousands upon thousands of ships.  Most of these were small fighter craft meant to fight the battles of the various governments back on Fenia.  The raw resources also helped in the construction of space elevators, what Epsians call "Old Trees."

This infighting continued for about 90 years until a few Zin found their way into the Epsian system.  The Epsians successfully fought off the Zin, but their governments had sacrificed nearly everything to do so.  The only way forward was for an agreement to form between all the nations of Fenia, and a united government was formed.  This government proposed the construction of the hyperspace drive, which would send their species to planets all across the galaxy, in case a Zin assault ever found their homeplanet again.  Several years before the completion of the project, the Oprid made their way into the system in one of their generation ships.  The Epsians, seeing the expanse and might of the Ascendancy, agreed to join the empire and share the designs for the hyperdrive in exchange for the protection the empire could provide them.
