Killian Black (aliases Kyle Beech, KB, and the Incomparable Ilurio) is the son of a cult leader now imprisoned on two counts of murder, raised by three of Amon Black's disciples as a chosen one destined to free his father and bring about a Great Exodus. That and a first name like "Killian" were pretty tough in high school, so he ran away from home and through a madcap collage of occupations as everything from street thief to stage magician to Evangelist exorcist. At the end he had a biography of manipulation and victimization that would have done his old man proud, but he wasn't proud, and his growing hunger for meaning eventually led him to backtrack the old cult and its secrets - which, in turn, led him to Lucas, his father's "friend" and apparently the real power behind the throne. Guess who was a vampire?
Lucas, a Daeva, used the bait of his knowledge and hints of the supernatural to lure poor Killian (Kyle, at the time, an affectation of normalcy that amused Lucas) into Vitae addiction and spent the next several years abusing the kid in just about every way imaginable, hollowing out his heart and mind with Majesty and Dominate and using him as a testing ground for Sanctified heresies to be spread among the kine. Eventually the elder Daeva got the attention of the wrong elements of the local Court and found most of his domain seized, his Haven burned, and his reputation shattered in a single night of violence and fire - during which he gave Killian the Embrace in a blind panic.
Free to think for himself, as himself, for the first time in half a decade, he turned to the Ordo Dracul, who promised him paths to draw meaning and power from his experiences and who were the covenant most likely to irritate his sire. Killian maintains complicated but cordial relations with Lucas, who was ordered to initiate his progeny into the Danse Macabre, and who seems to be pleased with his childe's independence - for whom he still has plans.
Starting Location Ideas!
Deirdre's Gate, a sleepy little town in Wyoming built at one end (and eventually expanding to both) of a mountain pass between two peaks now affectionately known as Cheshire, for its smile-like expanse of unforested rock about halfway up, and Crumble, because it looks like it's about to. The town is split into its east side, often called "Morgrave" in reference to the liberal arts college that is in some way responsible for just about three-quarters of the entire town's economy, and Oldtown on the west, where the first settlers stopped.
There are less than two dozen vampires in Deidre's Gate. The Invictus and the Carthian Movement - represented by Oldtown and Morgrave respectively - each claim dominion over their half of the city, splitting the town between two Princes who both expect to obeyed and actively loathe each other. The Circle of the Crone is controlled by a small inner council of three descendants of indigenous Native Americans, the oldest and most powerful vampires in the city, and is embroiled in power struggles with a pack of Pure werewolves for control of the pass, an overgrown between-place where strange and terrible things sometimes occur. The Ordo Dracul sneak about like thieves in the night on mysterious and oft-disturbing business. The Sanctified support the Invictus and Carthians both, acting as middlemen for the feuding covenants, seeking to unify Deidre's Gate as a prelude to moving against the Circle and their degenerate blasphemies.
