Re: University, by Day or night

(No worries, it happens.)

(Though, when you said that you wanted to do the NPC's once more I must admit that I was hoping for more than a bare outline. Better than nothing but...)

(Actually atrocities wouldn't bother him much, they were pretty much par for the course in medieval warfare. Without a siege train, about the only way one could harm an enemy who withdrew into his castle was to slaughter his peasants and livestock, set fires in his crops, and so on. A nation without a hereditary nobility or a state Church is completely outside his experience however.)

The American language lesson had given way to an impromptu American history lesson. Julio listened, asking the occasional leading question but content for the most part to listen, facinated and horrified by parts. A nation conquered not so much by force of arms as by disease! And then founded by peasant revolt! And then those same peasants had decided that they would set neither King nor God above themselves! And yet he had seen both noble estates and churches. He was missing something.

And then, with no source of morality he was quite astounded that they had not simply descended into anarchy and depravity. How had the nation survived? Yet it obviously had. The young matron displayed a strong sense of morality, stronger (if he was being honest) than his, but there was nothing to install it. Again, he was missing something.

At least the current politics had some resemblance to sanity. "So there are two Great Houses, these 'Republicans' and these 'Democrats', yes? And whichever of the two most pleases the mob during the elections rules for four years, yes?" " Genoa had 18 Great Houses and elections for the Doge tended to have more knifing in the back and poisoning than speeches, but he could sort of grasp it. With only two he would have suspected that the Democrats and Republicans were strawmen set up to satisfy the mob with the real ruler carrying on quietly in the background but Alice was firm that they actually ruled, cheeks bright and heart pounding with excitement as her hands fluttered like birds.

The thunder of her heart drew him in, his gaze fixing on the throbbing vein in her neck. It would be so easy to draw her close and sink his fangs gently in...

But Julio had not reached his present estate by being foolish, and feeding on her in such a public place would indeed be foolishness and he drew his gaze back, thrusting out one hand to avert bad luck as he looked away. She had fallen silent, flushing red and pulling at her lapel to cover more of her modest cleavage. How much of his hunger had she seen in that unguarded moment? Not too much he hoped. Still, there was the obvious excuse. "My apologies" he told her, "that wasn't fair, was it? Yet, I am a man and you are an attractive young woman, it does happen. Do say that you forgive me?"

Re: University, by Day or night

Julio eyed the young woman across from him, gauging her reaction. Despite the wonders of this age people remained people, and she was easy enough to read.  Surprise and uncertainty with a flattering levan of interest. Not perfect, but under the circumstances he would gladly take 'unsure about letting him part my legs' over 'oh no, he vants to svck my blud'. The first could be worked with, the second was liable to get him killed.

"I have embarrassed you. Again, I apologize. Perhaps we should leave it at that for today. Same place, same time tomorrow?"
At her nod he bowed himself out, his mind already turning to...

(Okay, what is his mind turning to?
Here is his 'to-do' list, please pick one.

Billy's problem
Meet and greet Clan head
Meet and greet with covenants
Forge, armor
Personal legend (SCA?))

Elysium it is. Turning up at someones haven can be a useful threat (or promise of aid) but probably best to be a little more formal starting out.

We gonna play this out?

Re: University, by Day or night

At Elysium

Julio moved up until he was two yards away from the Prince, then made his devotion. Stepping away at the Prince's nod, he let his gaze sweep the gathered Kindred, a little uncomfortable with the level of attention he was getting. Was he supposed to bow or something? It did seem to be fashionable these days. Still, he hadn't seen any of them do it and while the fist-to-chest salute that he favored was admittedly a little old-fashioned it was an entirely acceptable alternative to bowing, something that was far too closely associated with the Turk for his liking.

Ah, there was one of the ones he was here to see, Philip, local head of the Clan. Julio met his gaze then carefully suppressed a shocked blink at the response. That was... impressive. He spoke no word, made no gesture, but there was suddenly a clear path through his hangers-on. Obviously a master of Majesty. They were dangerous to speak with but Elysium should (hopefully) be safe enough. In any case, the last thing he intended to do before all these predators was show fear.

Taking up the implied invitation, he strode over to meet him. It was tempting to simply nod, claiming equality, after all it was likely that this 'elder' was barely half his age, but that had been at the root of much of his trouble in Genoa, rising too far (but not quite far enough) too fast in the Court, and he would not make that mistake again. No, for now a salute and a respectful greeting. "Ave. Julio the Wary, childe of Cicero, of House Daeva. Do I have the honor of addressing Philip, head of House?"

(OOC: Sorry going on vacation creates a lot of hustle and bustle... Branson is still beautiful)

he nods "We use the term clan, not house today. but yes you have the honor of addressing me" He says straightforwardly.

"And you only need to bow at the beginning and end of a conversation"

"Ah, I will remember that, thank you. I still have trouble with some of the turns of phrase these nights. As for bowing, I fear that that is too closely associated with the Turk for my liking, a tap on the chest may be old-fashioned but it still works."

Be that as it may, I wanted to make myself known to you, and to ask you of the... Clan, in this city. What can, or may, you tell me of it?"

(You might not know: The Turks, the Ottoman Empire, were the Boogy-man in medieval Europe. Pagans whose endless armies and immense wealth allowed them to successfully stand of the might of the Christian nations. Anything related to them was socially unfavorable. Julio has not yet adjusted to their new status as a minor power. For that matter he hasn't really adjusted to the idea of not using religion as an excuse to kill people and loot their stuff. He will get over it.)

Re: University, by Day or night

Julio quickly slated the address of the night-club, stylus squeaking loudly. A few moments with the marvelous map on his phone and... Growling at himself, he put stylus and slate away, keying the address into his phone instead. Indeed, there it was. 'Mode Noir', complete with gargoyles decorating the outside. A bit obvious perhaps (if he understood the changes that time had wrought upon the Frankish language properly), but it was their club, they could call it what they wished. Giving himself yet another reminder to remember the wonders of these nights first, he looked apology to Philip. "I beg your pardon, my phone is but as yet unfamiliar to me, I struggle to remember it upon occasion. I shall be sure to visit the place."

"I must confess, I find the modern fashion extremely drab. Indeed, it seems that the wealthier they are, the more drab their dress. It is one thing for the peasantry to aspire to nobility with bright clothing, quite another for the nobility to aspire to the peasantry in drab. I saw a graphic of the local leader, a 'President', the man dresses like a Burgher. A modest Burgher at that. An oddity. You say the clan follows this fashion?"
He tapped his breastplate. "Harness suits me well enough for the nonce."

"Perhaps, an you will, you could disclose to me how many of the Clan reside in this place, their names, and those amongst them who are worthy of note?

Was he mocking him? No, probably not. It was just this stupid bloody language. What was wrong with Latin? At least it had proper tenses. "Your pardon. Let me re-phrase that. How many members of the Clan live within the city limits, and who among them hold particular status, or lack of it?" he asked again, careful this time to follow the local verb rules.

Re: University, by Day or night

Actually, may I say that 60 is unlikely. Predator and prey. Too many predators, the prey start to notice, and then you have the Burning Times again. No Prince will risk that. Start with the mortal population of the city (Wikipedia is your friend here if you haven't already decided). Divide by 100 000 (75 000 for a crowded city with many Masquerade breaches, 150 000 for an easy one with few) to get the total Kindred population. Now divide by 5 for each clans nominal membership.

This isn't graven in stone, the city may have more of one clan or another for social reasons, the Prince's clan often has a few more (at the expense of other clans natch) as he is more likely to grant licence for Childer to his own clan, or historical reasons, the previous Prince may have been from another clan and the population has not yet stabilised or survival ones, Western cities often have more Gangrel or even fictional ones, Atlanta has many Deava thanks to Anne Rice, but the totals should fall into these numbers.

I would suggest, to make your life easier, that you go for 10 or so in each clan, with 4 or 5 as 'named' members and the rest to be filled in later.

I can help if you like?

Julio snorted amusement. "We are all periodically young" he observed caustically. "I have just gone through that myself. Still, I pride myself that I know War, perhaps I may be of use to the clan in its endevours."

Julio nodded. "Very true. My blood is sluggish, and those over whom I held sway are long dead. And yet, I decline to worry. I am still a member of the Clan, still have the skills of a Master of Horse, and I still have experience in reading the court and learning what moves to make and those not to make." He shrugged. "You have, of course, no real reason to believe in me. Well enough. Events will prove me out. Or not, as the case may be. The offer remains open."

Well, I wanted to meet you, and I have. We shall no doubt meet again, mayhap at your club."

Julio saluted, then looked around for his next target. There she was, and he headed over, reading her rank markings. A Bishop. Hmm. Odd to find a female Bishop, but the Kindred had always done things their own way. "Ave, Bishop. Permit me to introduce myself, Julio the Wary, childe of Cicero, of House Daeva."

Moving on to meet and greet with the Conventions. Do you want to play them out, or shall we move on to the action?
