[IC] Prelude - Michael Dacovetti

In-character prelude for keys138.  All other players, reading is encouraged but please don't post in this thread.

The Black Pelican, Kitty Hawk, NC
22 December 2014
2127 hrs local (0227 hrs Zulu)

"I'm sorry to jack with your leave," says the tall, aging surf bum who introduced himself as CWO Bannon and has an ID to match.  He slides a beer across the table in what's probably a more honest apology than his words.  "Travel schedules are all fucked up with the holidays and this was my best chance to catch you.  I'll get you back to your wife in an hour, max."

"I'm guessing you already verified me through JSOC after I called you this afternoon.  If you didn't, your security awareness is seriously lacking and you're not the guy we want."  He catches your skeptical glance around the restaurant and shrugs.  "Hey, places like this are lousy for noise filtering with the sea state like this," he gestures toward the dunes with his own beer, "and fuck me if I'm coming down to the Banks to catch you and missing a chance to eat here.

"Anyway.  This is a recruiting pitch, cleared through your bosses.  There's no penalty if you turn it down, God knows JSOC didn't want us to swipe you.  But we're expanding a joint counter-proliferation unit that has a direct line to NATO command.  Lots of high-tech stuff, what the boss likes to call 'emerging and disruptive technologies.'  There's a whole locker full of hundred-pound heads on the back end analyzing the take, but we need operators in the front office who are smart and educated enough to make the right decisions in the field.  Basing is in an unspecified country that looks a lot like Turkey on a map, but ops are all over Europe and the Middle East.

"What else do you need to know?"

Re: [IC} Prelude - Michael Dacovetti

The beer in his hand is cold.  Solid in a concrete way.  Dacovetti arches an eyebrow and waves the question away with a dip of the beer bottle.  He did have to hand it to the guy.  At least he didn't pick shit beer.

"Nah," Michael gives the "surfer" a little bit of the California treatment he'd picked up back in the day, drawing out the 'aw.' "I wouldn't pass on The Pelican either.  The cook here is a Portuguese transplant that knows his way around a six top Viking Range.  The Sous Chef is a god with shrimp.  You should have some."  He takes a deep drink, but manages not to pick at the label.  "All of which, obviously, is a very polite way of saying I know more about the operations of this establishment than I know about you.  Brick walls at JSOC bring answers of their own; a signal within absence if you will.  But they do make me curious."

Dacovetti manages to constrain his urge to sweep the room again.  "But words like 'disruptive' and 'emergent' are curious in and of themselves.  My wife would cringe to hear you use them.  She calls them, and I quote, 'oversold bullshit.'  Sometimes I'm inclined to agree."

It's less a statement and more of a hanging question.

"Still...it would be nice to be back in Europe for a bit.  What are the anticipated mission profiles?"  A peace offering and declaration of interest.

Re: [IC} Prelude - Michael Dacovetti

Bannon chuckles dryly.  "Note I said they were the boss' words, not mine."  He pauses to flag down your waitress and order.  "And JSOC shouldn't know too much about us, though we do have a couple of channels with them.  We're a NATO command, so all the Americans in the unit are in a hazy state of temporary duty.  Also kind of black.  One six-man DA team, about twenty in operations and the same number handling support.  I run the intel shop for operational stuff but the heavy analysis is distributed throughout the allied countries.  We're getting ready to add a second field team, which is where you come in.

"We go after guys who have their hands on the wrong technology, stuff that isn't necessarily on CNN's radar as the monster of the week.  Gene sequences of biologicals that the Russians swear were destroyed in the eighties.  Cold fusion research data.  A shipping container that turns up in the port of Genoa putting off radiation levels that look like Chernobyl.  High-end crypto.  Someone using Iraq as a test environment for what looks a lot like a directed EMP weapon.  Whenever Pakistan loses another nuke, we'll be on the callout list.  On paper, the mission is ISR, and we call in another CT unit or conventional forces when we have a positive ID.  In practice, sometimes there's no time to do that and our guys have to go hot.  So we really need people who understand what not to shoot when that happens."

Re: [IC} Prelude - Michael Dacovetti

Bannon's chuckle is answered with one of Dacovetti's own.  "That sounds a lot like an existential threat list.  Or at least rather similar to things that the world simply does not need."  He frowns then adds, "at least in the wrong hands."

There is a slight pause in the conversation that implies Bannon is letting his prospect think the scenario through in his head.  "You've undoubtedly run a complete check of my deployment history.  You know I'm not a Shooter.  That's not to say I've never had to go kinetic to exit my way out of a goat-rope or two, but I'm not exactly Marcus Luttrell.  Or any of his less famous counterparts."

Bannon nods and starts to say something, but when the waitress bring another round of drinks.  "Thanks," he tells her.  "Again, I would say we are looking for people who know what not to shoot.  And you fit a profile that says you can pick up critical skills when necessary. An early adopter, if you will."

"If you want to put me in touch with the big toys, I'm your man.  I just want to make sure you understand my limitations and capabilities.  I appreciate your candor with the possible scenarios.  The scope certainly appeals to me."

"Outstanding.  Welcome aboard."  Bannon waggles his eyebrows around his first shrimp.  "Mmmh.  Yeah, they've still got their mojo."  He dips into a pocket for a business card and hands it across the table.  "That's our liaison office at the Pentagon.  Call if you have any questions.  Unless something comes up, you can expect to see orders to Incirlik around the end of January.  It'll be written up as a deployment, probably twelve to eighteen months, so no need to PCS.  You know the drill."

Re: [IC} Prelude - Michael Dacovetti

Nimble, long fingers collect Bannon's card.  "I would have to have a permanent home to PCS from," Dacovetti grunts.  It's a an overshare bordering on unnecessary, but he keeps the tone light: less gripe and more simple observation.  "My home is a go-bag, much to my wife's chagrin and despite the checks I keep sending to the mortgage company.  TDY is fine."

Dacovetti checks his watch. "I appreciate the meet and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together."  The second beer disappears in a matter of seconds.  "But forgive me if I flee.  My wife has twenty six hours left on her North American stop over and I intend to be awake and around to enjoy at least twenty five of them."

"Roger that," Bannon grins, saluting you with his beer.  "Hey, at least go alongside the dessert case on your way out and get something to go.  It's on the black budget.  I'll see you next month."
