1C - TiNH - Part Three: Celene's Ordination

Celene returns to the temple of Wee Jas and feels that something is different inside her. She knows now that she is strong enough to channel the power of her goddess if she decides that is the path she should follow.

Re: 1C - TiNH - Part Three: Celene's Ordination

Walking along the busy streets of Sasserine on the way back to the temple of Wee Jas, Celene is near oblivious to the hustle around her. Her thoughts are far too preoccupied with her inner debate.

Within the span of a few days, she had used and experienced magic as real as never before. New insights had come to her, but insights that coalesced perfectly with her teaching at the temple of magic. Her education and knowledge thus having grown beyond her congenital powers and grasp of magic, she had realised she wanted to widen her senses and abilities, to savour the multitudes of magic.

At the same time, she perceived and acknowledges her strangely emotional ties with the temple of Wee Jas, and with the goddess herself. She had been taken in, and taken care of, as a helpless child. Despite any hidden agenda on their part, she could nothing but repay that in kind. Additionally, their trust upon the Law, and dependance on a strict hieracic set of rules and organisation was what she sought, and found comfort in.
And on the brink of adulthood, she had now been visited by the goddess herself. In no world of hers would that be ignored. She, and her fate, was bound with that of the goddess. And she was ready to commit to that bond.

Arriving back at the temple, she walks to the Magus' office. Knocking gently, she is called in. Standing in the doorway, locking eyes with the old woman, the Magus simply asks "So, is it time?" "Yes, Magus Eseriel", Celene merely replies.

Re: 1C - TiNH - Part Three: Celene's Ordination

At Celene's answer a strange look flashes over Eseriel's face. Concern? Maybe even fear? No, probably just the look of a parental figure with mixed feelings about her young charge growing up.

The Magus gives Celene the codex - the central book of law for the Wee Jas faith - so that Celene can review and meditate upon over the night. Traditionally, the applicant would not sleep the night before the ordination ceremony, but as Celene returns to her simple room a great fatigue comes over her and she slips into sleep before she is able to stop herself. Her dreams are troubled - a confusing jumble of her childhood on the plantation mixed with other things – some sort of temple in a garish mauve, flesh, heat, pain.

She wakes with a start several hours before the service and spends the remaining time trying to calm her nerves so that she is in a fit state for her progression from novice to adept.

Ordination is always done at a dawn service, and witnessed by the High Magus Annah Ternaki and all the other clerics in the temple. The enormous Polynesian woman had been the head of the temple for several decades, but her large bulk now made even Nylaria Asalee look svelte, and her advancing years meant that she slept through the proceedings of most mornings. But the other clerics kneeling on the pews behind Celene were more attentive.

The ordination ceremony took place in three steps, ‘the book’, ‘the blade’ and ‘the blood’.

Celene first took the heavy tome of law and held it in front of her on upraised palms. With a solemn oath she vowed to uphold and protect the laws of the Church of Wee Jas. The High Magus’ snores only slightly disrupted the proceedings.

The sorceress was then presented with a black serpentine blade representing the power and will of Wee Jas. The blade was passed to her by Eseriel, with a serious look on her face. “With this blade you must defend the precepts of our law and strike against those who oppose our goddess.” The High Magus slept on.

The final stage was known as ‘the blood’. The applicant was required to hold a small gemstone on an upraised palm, over a bowl of some sort of red acid that could dissolve gems – this symbolized the blood of Wee Jas. The gemstone would then either shine, indicating that she was accepted to the next level… or not… which meant that the applicant would need to return to their studies and try again at a later date. For a novice, the gemstone was just a simple piece of quartz, while for more senior clerics gemstones of greater value were required. When the gemstone shone, the applicant would flip their hand over and drop the gemstone into the acid as a sacrifice to the goddess. Of course the High Magus was present to ensure that no sort of magical trickery took place.

Celene held her hand out-stretched and Eseriel placed a piece of translucent quartz on it – as Celene’s sponsor it was Eseriel’s responsibility to do this – they then waited for the response of the goddess. And waited and waited…

Celene’s cheeks started to glow as she heard some of the younger clerics behind her begin to mutter and even a few sniggers break out. It was very rare for an advancement from novice to adept to be refused by the goddess since it was such a simple step. But then a faint light appeared in the middle of the crystal, and grew until it radiated a faint purple light.

“The applicant is accepted,” stated Eseriel.

“Eh?! What is this,” said the High Magus, stirring her vast bulk in the seat on the raised dais above them. “But it shines purple! That is very peculiar!”

“Oh a light is a light, High Magus. The color is not important!” With that Eseriel grabs Celene’s wrist and flips her hand over so that the gemstone falls into the bowl of acid and quickly sizzles into nothing. It appears that Celene is now an adept of Wee Jas!

OOC: Congrats! You are now a first level cleric!

Re: 1C - TiNH - Part Three: Celene's Ordination

Raising her gaze from the crimson fluid, Celene looks to the face of Eseriel from comfort or confirmation that all is all right, despite the bewildering occurences. Or was something in fact wrong, and was Eseriel aware of it? After trying to read the old woman, Celene resigns to stepping back from the altar to take her place among her peers.

Following the ceremony, she was exhausted, but could not let it rest. She went into the vast library of the temple, to learn what was supposed to have happened, and what a differing light may mean. All the while, her inner senses, so finely attuned to magic, had started tingling and snapping with the power welling forth within her.

Whatever she may learn or not, she wasn't going to let it go with a mere dismissal from Eseriel. Into the afternoon, she sought out the old woman's office yet again.

Celene rolled 21 using 1d20+6. Sense motive - did Eseriel lie?

Celene rolled 10 using 1d20+5. Know religion - Wee Jas ordination ritual, and colours of the gems. Any bonus from the library?
