Inside the Secret Room

Angati sighed "Leave them there... we will take them out the way we came, and open them when we can... that is... if that drainage takes us out... so... if you are the best swimmer Alohan, let me heal you if you want to try again that route... otherwise, I'll give it a try."

OOC: one CLW if you want to try the drainage again:
08:50, Today: Angati rolled 7 using 1d8+2.  CLW Alohan.

Swim Rules

OOC: OK, no pressure, but if someone does try to swim through the drainage pipe here are the rules:

DC15 swim check required each round due to the current flowing into the cave and the confined space making the swim challenging
It is a 20' swim just to get down to the pipe
Keep track of how long you have held your breath - moving counts as two 'rounds'
DC10 acrobatics check needed at the end of each round to see if you touched a sea urchin.
If you do touch a sea urchin, then it is a DC11 fortitude check else be nausiated for 10 rounds - this will have a big effect on your swimming ability if you fail as you will no longer be able to take full round moves.
Do this until you get to 50' then let's talk....

Swim Rules

Celene balked loudly. "Alohan!! Stop it." But it was too late, he'd moved carelessly to the chests. Celene reacted differently in her grief, talking even more, and going far to strengthening the social ties between them all further. Her latent (but strict) maternal instincts also kicked in, which would hopefully avert more losses.

"Alohan, will you please try and calm down, at least as long as we're down here in unknown surroundings? I know you grieve about Logan, but getting killed yourself, or having one of us killed from your recklessness will just make it all worse for those left. We need you, and we need your strength, as always - don't waste it."

Moving back to discus their escape options and Alohans state. "You are - our best swimmer - and also most adept at navigating the confines down there. But if you're not up to it after the last trip we understand? I have magical means of swimming myself - just not for avoiding the dangers. But let's give the swimmer a rope along, to signal those above if there's another crab, or worse, to haul the swimmer back. As far as the rope can stretch, that is..."

Kassius looks over the locked chests. Most likely this treasure belonged to the zombies, before whatever it was that happened to them. "Has anyone tried checking the destroyed undead for keys?" He asks.

As for the pipe, and swimming away Kassius announces.
"I'm a fair swimmer, and can use some magic to be better for short times, but I think Alohan's better for a long swim. It doesn't seem like we have any way out of this frakking pit unless someone tries to swim though. I've got some rope too."

It wasn't possible to search the undead as those guys hardly even had clothes on, just rags, so there wasn't anything to search. The exception was the huecuva and Kassius searched that guy himself and the holy symbol was the only item of interest. It appears that the key(s) have been lost over the decades that this treasure has been locked up here.

Kassius has +3 to swim checks (+4 with no armour on) and can use frog animal focus to push this up to +8 (with no armour) for 10 rounds.

Alohan has +4 (+5 with no armour, there is an error on the character sheet I think Ron).

Swimming in the pipe requires DC15 checks due to the strong current, but failure just means that you only move 5' so isn't the end of the world.

When it comes to breath holding Alohan has a slight advantage as Kassius has constitution 13, and Alohan has constitution 14.

In terms of avoiding the sea urchins, Kassius has +4 acrobatics and Alohan has +6. Kassius makes fort saves at +4, Alohan makes them at +6. So Alohan wins in that comparison.

Alohan is a better melee fighter of course, which may be important if there are more problems in the pipe.

Additionally, Celene can use the scroll of 'monkey fish' and give herself a 20' swim speed. Unfortunately this spell(scroll) is self only, and sending the sorceress through the pipe seems... shortsighted.

In reply to Dungeon Master (msg # 416):

Kassius could also use the scroll of monkey-fish; it's on his spell list. It's only a swim speed of 10 ft though, and I assume it's CL 1, so it only lasts a minute. So between the scroll and his animal focus, Kassius could out-swim Alohan for 2 minutes. But as Ronald described, Alohan's better at everything else.

While the friends discuss how best to escape this nightmare cavern, Celene takes the opportunity to heal the hurt.

+4 hp to everyone. That's the last of the channeling.

I don't want to push anyone into it (the water :-)), but my oppinion is that both Kassius and Alohan go, as one alone is too risky, as Kassius pointed out.

That rule doesn't mention the 'hunter' character class as it was created in a later rulebook. Hunters have access to druid spells of 6th level and below, and 'monkey fish' is a 1st level druid spell:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/.../spell-lists---druid

So Kassius can use your scroll if you will let him.

Fine, as long as it is understood that the pipe is only 5' in diameter and it will be hard to pass each other in it due to inner diameter being covered in spiky sea urchins.

Are you still going to tie a rope around them?

Before their brave, manly protectors leave them, the girls go back to check that all undead are still dead, so to speak.

They then part with the guys, but give Alohan the end of their longest rope (not tied to him as it may get stuck, but held in hand or tugged loosely in belt or something), agreeing on tugging signals for 'reel in', 'wait', and 'end of rope'.

If, no when, the end of the rope is reached, Angati and Celene go back to the shaft up, hoping to hear the two from above - yet being too wary to shout or show themselves before they know it's the good ones coming.

By the way, the back story on papa crab mentioned the stream one day stopping/reversing? Can we see any signs of changes in flow etc.? Such as after we destroyed the pumping mechanism/power source?

Alohan had stripped his armor off while everyone was discussing actions. He was sulking -especially since Celene had scolded him and wanted to be left alone. It was a forgone conclusion he'd be going into the pipe. They'd have to tie him up to prevent him. After what felt like an entirety trapped in this subterranean hell, they'd be hard pressed keeping Alohan out of that pipe.

With machete in hand, Alohan proceeded to carve up the crab. He was hungry and wanted to attempt this underwater jaunt with a full stomach. Thankfully, due to the size the crustacean, there was more than enough to go around. After two very large crab legs, Alohan had his fill.

He turned to the half-orc, stretching the kinks from his arms. "Ya be ready?" he asked, waddling out into the pool.
Swim: I know I have 5 on the character sheet -that is just to remind me what it would be WITHOUT my armor. Dont worry, I have been using 4 this entire time.

OOC: Cross posted from the swimming thread for completeness.

Kassius:
Kassius takes out his own rope, carefully tying it around his waist, before handing the other end to the ladies. Then, he strips off his leather armor, and rests his bow, quiver, and pack with it. Those can all be dragged up once the cap is removed, but will just slow him down underwater. He does however take a dagger, securing it firmly his his belt. The short weapon will be useful if there are anymore foes to fight, or if he gets caught in anything.

He looks over at his companion, the faithful Kibeti. This trip will have to be without him. "Kibeti kuka" he says firmly, ordering the cat to stay.

Then, suitably prepared, he looks over at Alohan, checking to see if the other man was prepared. Once he is, Kassius takes an enormous breath of air. As he does so he activates his magic. His eyes becomes bulbous, and the skin between his fingers web together in a strange parody of a frog. Then, with a run, he dives into the water. As he does, another change, elongated legs becomes readily apparent, as he practically flies through the air before landing gracefully in the water just above the pipe. He then dives down easily.

Angati takes one end of the rope wrapped around Kassius waist and feeds out the line as the hunter swims deeper through the pipe. Eventually she reaches the end of the rope (after 50') and then must simply let go - what else is there to do? The end of the rope disappears into the water, at least the hunter is apparently making good progress.

Wrap-up

Kassius and Alohan whack and bash their way into the interior of the tiny island and very quickly locate the tall stand of bamboo that marks the location of the stone trap door. They approach with their weapons in hand - the barbarians well used and notched machete and Kassius' dagger - but Vanthus is of course long gone.

The result of his handy work is visible though. The trap door and the surrounding area have been covered with many heavy and jagged rocks. Even if the party had somehow managed to get the trap door open, it would have been certain death for anyone in the room below.

The pair set about removing all of the debris so they can get the stone door open.

Meanwhile, Angati and Celene use their time productively by picking up one end each of one of the heavy chests, and carrying it through the dungeon. Kibeti whines, but stays in the spot his master commanded, and the spellcasters make sure to leave a light for him to see by.

Carrying the chest is difficult work (although still possible, even Celene can lift half of 100lb) especially since they need to hold it above waist height when navigating the flooded sections just in case something inside is sensitive to water damage. They are comforted to see that the huecuva's main room is just as they left it and that the undead are definitely vanquished.

After carrying and dragging the chest through almost the entire dungeon they are back at the trap door room and hear the encouraging sounds of rocks being moved up above. Within ten minutes the men above have the door open.

OOC: Final steps? Please describe how you get the remaining two chests, Kibeti and of course your dead rogue back to the surface. Also, let me know what your plan is to get the chests unlocked.

Wrap-up

What would the climb DC be to climb up the wall of the pit without using the rope? With animal focus, Kibeti has a +5 check (DC 15 taking 10).

Kassius takes a breather by the edge of the pit as he removes the last of the stones. He calls for Kibeti, who ambles over, glancing up at Kassius. The cat glances over at the walls appraisingly, but doesn't jump or climb just yet.

Tossing his rope down to Celene and Angati, Kassius calls out,
"Tie it around the handle, and Alohan and I will drag it up."
Kassius grimaces, look at poor Logan's body. We'll probably have to do the same thing with him. As for the chests, once we get them up, maybe Alohan can smash them. Logically, the two heaviest ones are probably filled with coins, which are unlikely to be damaged. Hopefully, they have enough to pay for Logan to be raised, and he can then pick the last one. If not there are surely locksmiths in Sasserine.

It would be DC20 to climb the walls of the room rather than using the rope, but this only gets you 20' of the 30'. The last section is very difficult as it is a 135° slope ie an overhang leading up to the final shaft, this is DC35.

I mean, I guess it isn't impossible for him to climb it, but for the last bit the cat will need to hang by his front paws and treat it like some sort of demented monkey bars over a 20' drop. Want to give it a go? :P

Beni is right. In this room there is currently only one chest and the two ladies. All the other stuff: treasure chests, mutant feline animal companions and corpses are on the other side of the dungeon.

But I don't know if Beni is right about Kassius holding Kibeti while Kassius is pulled up. How big is the cat? If he is bigger than Scoopy Doo then I don't see it happening.
