The Bullywug Gambit (Dungeon #140)
Chapter Three: Frogs in the House

In the end the order that the characters enter the basement through the flowing water doesn't matter since there is a clear space on the other side where they are able to assemble.

They have arrived in a 50' by 25' room with three exits: an opening to the west, a small staircase leading up and a small 3/4 height door in the eastern wall. The scream of the woman in distress are clearing coming from the west, as it flickering torchlight, so the party creep in that direction.

The western half of the cellar appears to be a storage room for big barrels of persevered goods lit by torches spread around the room, but most of the barrels have been pushed back against the wall now. Half a dozen bullywugs are standing around, lounging against pillars, sitting on barrels and chatting amongst themselves in their wet sounding language.

At the far end of the room a woman dressed in nothing but a ragged white sheet is writhing and darting from side to side, trying to avoid the attacks of some sort of reddish monster about the size of a large dog. As they watch they catch sight of the long feelers coming out of its head - it is a rust monster! And from the sheet on the woman a few pieces of silver cutlery dangle. The lady dances a little further into the torch light as she desperately tries to avoid the bite of the little critter - it is Liamae Teslikaria! The sorceress from the Jade Ravens.

These show is apparently orchestrated for a chuckling figure sitting in an over-padded arm chair leaning up against a pillar. This stout bullywug is giving commands to two other of the green creatures to keep Liamae hemmed into the corner so that the fun can continue.

The party had discussed the situation with Harliss on the way there. Although the pirate captain was fairly certain that she could talk the Glob Thorb tribe into leaving the mansion WITH all of Lavinia's possessions that they had looted, she was fairy certain that she couldn't get them to leave all the fun 'shinies' behind. Since they couldn't just let the bullywugs run off with pretty much everything that Lavinia owned, that meant that it was fighting time.

<Shrug> Or maybe this party just really likes fighting. Who knows? In the end it has the same result. Time to get the combat gear out!

So you may move to any square without triggering an AoO and attack against their flat-footed AC. Oh, and the red 'R' on the map stands for 'rust monster'.

Urol moves forward a few paces, then lobs a bomb into the midst of the bullywogs, catching three of them in a blast of cold.

The bomb catches the three bullywugs totally by surprise and all three take full damage. Their thick blubbery hides do defend them against the ongoing effects of the cold though, and only one of them (BW6) is staggered.

Kassius positions himself along the Northern wall and fires an arrow at the Rust Monster, hoping to injure and distract the beast away from it's current victim. In his haste to get into position however, he stumbles as he looses the arrow, and it flies into the wall nearby harmlessly.

Kibeti moves in front, covering Kassius and chomping down. Looks like frog's leg for dinner today!

Celene crept into the room while the frog men were preoccupied and slunk along the pillars positioning herself for optimum placement of her spell. She called to the fire in her blood and allowed the heat to build within her arms before unleashing it on the unsuspecting Bullywugs in a torrent of purple flame.

Celene's purple flame catches three of the frog people, although two of them are able to jump away from the worst of it.

Kassius misses with his bow, Kibeti grabs BW4 by the leg and starts shaking it violently - the bullywug, which had just jumped out of the way of the sorceress' flame and Urol's frozt bomb squeals. [Language unknown: "Eausonome, ek anmi wiion to il!"]

The large bullywug who had been enjoying the show gets to his feet flippers.
[Secret to group Bullywi: "What be going on here?!"] he bellows.

Harliss is quick to join the fight and ends up in the middle of the room. "Chief Lorpth, you fat old frac. You've slapped me ass for the last time, boiy-oh!" Her rapier slips into his side easily, nearly gutting the big bullywug (18 hp damage!).

Liamae blinks, stopping in her desperate dance and letting the tableware strapped to her waist settle with a clicking sound.

"This is it Liamae," she mutters to herself. "Time to give them your last shot."

She closes her eyes and mutters, two magical bolts of force shoot out from her fingers and hit BW1 & 2. (2hp & 4hp damage). The little blows of force seem to annoy the frogs more than harm them. The raise their clubs and advance on her. The rust monster snapping at her lunges and tears the last silverware from her belt.

Angati and Alohan still to play this round.

Alohan wrestled with a rust monster before and he was itching to do it again. Yet the situation gave him pause -tangling with the rust monster would leave Liamae to her fate and that wasn't something he could do. Still, it could be worse. Their enemies were spaced out enough that many of their attacks could clean through them before they could organize themselves in any sort of defensive positioning. By that time, it would be too late. Both he and the big cat would be within their midsts, tearing them apart. Alohan was confident.

The group had talked about how they would proceed and Alohan waited for Urol and Celene to unleash their torrent. He used their magical and alchemical prowess as cover to bolt forward into the crowd of bullywugs, weaving through their unexpecting numbers. He pushed himself towards Laimae and hefted his taiaha into his hands. Without bothering to come to a stop, Alohan slammed the weapon into the frogmen's back swinging with a hefty upwards slice.

Satisfied he made contact, Alohan twirled the weapon in his hands. "Ya be fightin' me now' he said, pushing his back to the wall.

OOC: Dang. Looks like I have to take Angati's turn again :(

The oracle is torn between wanting to protect Celene from melee combat and wanting to save Liamae (remember, Lavinia will only have funds available to pay for Logan's raising if all 4 Jade Ravens are saved). But she also doesn't want her nice armour crunched by that rust monster. In the end she tries to save both woman and places herself squarely in the path between BW4 & BW5 and the cleric, while casting a spell to effect one of the Bullywugs closest to the Jade Raven sorceress (BW1).

OOC: no AoO due to surprise round.

At first the savage little amphibian resists, but Angati uses her power of misfortune to pick a more palatable alternative - the frogman blubbery and tries to flee her. He can't get out of the room without getting past her so tries to cower in the corner instead.

You should remove the fatigue debuffs - Alohan recovered from that ages ago.

With various bellows and croaks the bullywugs free their clubs and leap (hop) into the attack.

BW1 runs into the corner of the room and cowers.
BW2 attacks Alohan and misses
BW3 moves north to get a good clean shot at Kassius and flings a throwing axe at him - it's not a bad shot but the range manages to duck at the last minute and it flies over his head.
BW4 & BW5 attack with their clubs Angati but her armour proves too go for them.
BW6 runs after Urol, perhaps thinking that the gnome will be an easy target. The alchemist is able to avoid the frogman's club for the time being.
The rust monster can't find anything else metallic on Liamae's body and therefore decides to eat her instead. The little critter lunges at her leg but she is able to pull it back in time and shrinks back into the corner of the room.

The bullywug chief is furious. [Language unknown: "Essom oer tra peble io usetli llcaha se seweni'aselec?! Nievmi Bleeveera ad chlar unne!" ]He kicks the stuffed arm chair out at Harliss, disbalancing her and picks up a huge piece of wood that apparently serves as his club (it's a greatclub). The hunk of tree is covered in magical runes and has shells and bits of rock stuck into it, and he pounds it into her shoulder, knocking her flat on the afore mentioned behind (28hp damage).

Alohan was shocked at his success, twirling his weapon around to deflect his enemy's attacks, follow through, and bring it down hard on the bullywug. He heard the creature's skull crack with a sickening crunch, satisfied it was as quick as Alohan could make it. Without giving it much more of a thought, the Islander stepped forward over the body.

The rust monster was a threat he was unsure of handling. His weapon, although humming with energy, might have been susceptible to the creature's attacks. Hell, if it could chew through a cabal of intelligent weapons, he was unsure if his wooden taiaha would hold it's own. Regardless, Alohan drove the jade tipped pointy end into the creature hoping to pull it's attention off of Liamae.

Kassius ignores the bullywog attacking himself, and instead focuses fire, trying to help Urol get free. He fires an arrow at the monster's leg, and then when it stumbles, launches a second arrow into the bullywug's back.

Kibeti meanwhile attacks viciously, his claws almost landing killing blows on his foe. Only the bullywug's rapid retreat prevents the claws from decapitating the monster, and the attacks instead scour it's sides.

The splurt of green blood from the creature makes a vivid emerald splash over the face of the savage barbarian. He has opened up a jagged hole in the head of the bullywug with the jade blade of his weapon, and steps forward to engage the rust monster, confident in the fact that he is has nothing metallic that the creature can feast on.

Kassius sends two arrows into the frogman charging towards Urol. The creature is felled by a combination of frost burns, normal burns and two arrows and collapses to the ground leaving the alchemist free to do his thing.

Kibeti does indeed land killing blows on another BW. The creature's hasty retreat is not quick enough to save it from becoming a tasty snack for Kassius' totem guide.

Celene hasn't acted either. :)

Celene weaves through her allies as they topple a number of the frogmen. She wanted to help Harliss who seemed to be in the worst situation by far. The sorceress rounded one of the pillars and drew on her inborn magic to thwart the Chief as he bore down on Harliss.

Harliss momentarily stunned from the fall onto the paved floor. As she opens her eyes she sees Chief Lorpth rearing above her, his gigantic greatclub welded two handed and stretched back over the top of his head for a massive blow. The pirate rolls to the side and the huge piece of wood lands in the spot where she was a second before, pounding the paving stones to smithereens. An instant latter she is rolling back as the big Bullywug leader lands another crashing blow onto the floor.

Suddenly the creature is cursing and clutching at his weapon which appears to be slipping from his grasp. Harliss takes the opportunity to flip onto to her feet (no AoO triggered due to feat) and sink her blade into him again (12 hp damage).

Celene's spell has bought a few crucial seconds, but the cunning old Bullywug is familiar with the spell and regains his grip after a few choice explicatives.
