Re: 3F - SWW - Part Five: Journey's End

Kassius enhances his animal companion and then sends it down into the weeds below, but the cat misses with its first bite.

Angati concentrates, and then starts flickering through time. She pulls her shield over her head and starts slogging back to the ship, causing A LOT of AoO's. But again her armour protects her from the worst of it, and only one creature manages to slip a first under her guard (10 hp).

OOC: Using the time flicker is a supernatural ability which does not trigger an AoO... well, she triggered them all in the end anyway. I checked for the time flicker miss chance but no luck.

Celene really shows off the combat experience she has gained since her sheltered days in the template. She manages to launch a spell both while grappled and without triggering her other nearby opponent. She is rewarded with a very successful spell - all six of the creatures targeted are slowed.

Alohan leaps over to sailor #1 (triggers AoO's and I rolled for all that previously) and starts chopping at the weeds pulling the other man down. He lands a series of impressive blows and is able to cut through the fronds grappling the sailor despite his weapon not being very appropriate for the job (9 hp after DR).

OOC: So these things have DR 5/magic and slashing, but if you do 8 hp damage to one of them who is grappling somebody then it is assumed that you have cut through the specific fronds performing the grapple and the victim is freed!

The warrior native turns to Celene. "Hang on little Celene, I am coming drough des dings!"

Skald and Urol arrive on deck, and the bosom begins to to unsling his compound bow, but the gnome hesitates to gawk open mouthed at the scene. "This is increadible!" gasps the naturalist in awe. "These... these must be an entirely new genus!" Urol looks out over the unfolding combat and tries to work out who is in the best position to act.

"Celene... oh, Celene!" he screams out across the sea-weedy muck. The gnome realizes that he may have to yell a bit louder since the sorceress is in the process of being pulled down into the sea-weed by one of the vine horrors, and has both ears covered in weed. "CELENE! GET. A. SAMPLE!" he finally bellows so loudly that he goes red in the face.

"Get your fancy crossbow out you old coot!" shouts Skald as he beginning to take aim. "This ain't no time for your plant fetish!"

OOC: They'll be available for combat next round.

OOC: That leaves Logan/John - who is out of town and Kinstal... I'll give Kinstal another 24 hours since it has mostly been weekend.

Re: 3F - SWW - Part Five: Journey's End

As Kinstal watches the horde of seaweed creatures rise from the morass, he realizes he must take action.  He sees his comrades getting wrapped up and pulled under and instinct kicks in and Kinstal runs to one the rope ladders that the crew would have climbed down on.  Leaping over the railing Kinstal rushes down as quickly a possible.

Re: 3F - SWW - Part Five: Journey's End

Kinstal gets the rope ladder lowered and then jumps down into the weeds himself. Seeing that Alohan has the rescue of sailor #1 under control, he moves as fast as he can towards Celene.

Logan stands his ground and strikes out with his rapier and short sword. He hits with both but does nearly no damage (1 hp onto #8). His piercing weapons are nearly ineffective against these creatures. He yells out that he is going to risk a run for the ship.

OOC: Logan was grappled so I better redo this.

20:12, Today: Dungeon Master rolled 26 using 1d20+14.  Logan escape artist.

Logan conducts a series of manevours that catches the horror vine short and manages to escape from the grapple.

Sailor #1 screams in terror event as Alohan is cutting the weeds of him. The man darts between the native's legs and then scrambles up the rope ladder (very thoughtful of you there Kinstal!).

Sailor #3 succumbs to the terrible weeds and is dragged into the Sargasso (reached negative hp equal to his constitution).

Sailor #2 curses, realises that he has little chance fighting against these things and breaks away towards the ship (withdraw). He makes it back onto the deck.

Sailor #4 tries to break out of the clutches of the vines horrors surrounding him but fails.

START OF ROUND TWO - VINE HORRORS' TURN

Vine horror #1 attacks Kibeti and misses twice (just).

Vine horrors #2 & #3 move to intercept Kinstal (they don't seem effected by the difficult terrain at all) but both miss.

Vine horror #4 (slowed) maintains its grapple on Celene and tries to pin her - it succeeds and the sorceress is one step closer to her watery grave (gains pinned condition).

Vine horror #5 (slowed) does not stop whipping her across the back as she goes down (5 hp damage).

Vine horrors #6 (slowed), #7 (slowed), #9 (slowed), #11, #12 & #14 go after Angati. If she didn't know better she would've guess that they were specially going after her...

The first plant-man (VH6) trips her as she tries to run through the muck, and her heavy armour means she is unable to avoid him (grappled - time flicker no good again). The oracle disappears under the wave of curled up green fists that are landing on her, but covers up well (only two hits, 18 hp, no luck with the time flicker).

Sailor #4 screams for mercy but the plant-men never give him a chance. One of them holds him down in the grapple while the others bludgeon him to death. The man is quickly turned into a messy red pulp and then sinks into the weed.

Logan gets off easy since the weed seems intend on wailing on Angati (one hit for 6 hp).

Re: 3F - SWW - Part Five: Journey's End

Logan lowers his weapons as he goes on the defensive and starts pushing through the weeds via the only route - to the north-west. The plant men don't let him go easily.... (AoO from 6, 8 & 9)

...but the rogue ducks and weaves and manages to get past them (up to D7 using a withdraw - is that right?).

He shouts out for Angati to follow him.

Re: 3F - SWW - Part Five: Journey's End

Angati felt fear tightening it's grip on her, she felt its suffocating presence in the form of a terrible déjà vu that threatened to rend her helpless... That wouldn't do. She had to first liberate herself. Conjuring the spell almost by instinct, she managed to wriggle free of her assailants.

Then, pulling forces out of nowhere, she continued moving towards the ship.

The idea is to continue closing up to the boat, as movement is too difficult, all distance she can advance is less distance to allow for the rescuers to come to her.
Cant really use the wand while grappled and all, I need a free action to see what I do... I was thinking Sanctuary would be good too.

Re: 3F - SWW - Part Five: Journey's End

With assistance from her magic, Angati manages to break free of the vine horror... but she climbs to her feet to find herself surrounded by the terrible creatures.

By some miracle, Celene actually managers to break free of her entanglement. She escapes from the grapple... And VH#4 jumps straight back on top of her.

Kassius casts his spell and Kibeti misses again and again.

Kinstal roars and tries to charge VH#4 in the hope of taking some of the pressure off Celene... but he has forgotten how difficult it is to move through the muck. (You can't charge in difficult terrain and all the seaweed is difficult terrain). Instead he ends up sloshing through to VH#4, ignoring the clumsy attacks from VH#2 & VH#3 as he moves past them (AoO miss) and attacking VH#4 normally... he misses.

Logan halts in his flight and sees that Celene is in trouble. He moves to F10 and also attacks VH#4. He takes the opportunity to sneak attack it while it is busy trying to regrapple Celene (flanking) but misses.

Urol grabs a flask from his belt, adds a drop of reactant and then lobs the bubbling brew at the nearest enemy (VH#2). It is a perfect hit and in addition to it blowing a good chuck of seaweed off (14 hp), the creature is frozen and starts moving sluggishly (VH#2 is staggered). The alchemist shakes his head sadly. "Such a shame," he mutters.

Skald curses as he sees how little effect the rapiers of his friends are having. He drops his bow, draws his scimatar and leaps down onto the seaweed below (G5), almost landing on one of the creatures (VH#2). His leap is elegant but he misses by a mile.

Alohan bellows and continues cutting through VH1 - he inflicts great damage despite his weapon not being a smart tool for the job (18 hp after DR).

Celene:
Celene had been prepared to die as soon as she was grabbed. That didn't mean she was going out without a fight. She bucked and heaved with all her might trying to break through the vines that bound her.

OOC: Ugh. What was she doing down there anyway? When the DM asks who wants to get out and try and free the ship, the arcane caster should always be suddenly busy elsewhere. And she wouldn't have even been strong enough to help much in anycase.

OOC: Anyway, I think that is everyone.

<SEAWEED TURN>
(Map update latter).

VH1 attacks Kibeti and connects once (8 hp).

VH3 hits Kinstal even as the warrior tries to pull Celene out of the combat (9 hp). VH2 (staggered due to Urol's potion) charges Kinstal (as a full round action) but misses.

The two vine horrors attacking Celene continue - despite their staggered condition and Kinstal trying to stick his body in the way (bodyguard) it is hopeless and they both hit (13 hp).

The rest of the vine horrors surround Angati, seemingly singling her our for special attention. The oracle goes onto full defense and covers up, doing a good job of defending herself until one manages to get a lucky hit in (confirmed crit).

Angati screws up her face and draws upon her magical power to reverse the flow of time and find a better reality for herself. The first alternate reality that appears in her mind is very strange - a big hole appears in the ground beneath her and she falls into it. The hole closes over her. Not too worried, this sort of thing happens after all when you flash through random alternate realities, she flips to the next... it is the same.

In increasing panic Angati continues to flip again and again through alternate reality after alternate reality, always seeing the same thing. Eventually time runs out and she is forced to be sucked into the terrible and explainable fate that she seems to have created for herself.

A hole appears in the seaweed directly under Angati and she disappears into it. A split second later the hole closes over her and she is gone. The multitude of seaweed men around her pause for a second, looking down at where she has disappeared. Then they raise their heads to the sky and crow in triumpt, raising a terrible dissonant hissing scream. This is the first noise that they have vocalised.

Still within the grasp of the vine creature and nearing the point of collapse Celene has no option than to rely on her friends to save her. She reaches to her belt and draws out a slender white wand. She manages to activate the wand and heal some of her wounds.

"Frakking Hells!"Kassius curses, as Celene and Angati fall. Kassius begins firing, and Kibeti seems to fight with enhanced vigor, doing more damage. Impossibly, some of the vines on the foe actually seems to respond to the magic in Kibeti's claws, reaching up to entangle the master.

19:08, Today: Kassius rolled 25,13,14,14 using 1d20+8,1d20+8,2d6+6,2d6+6.  Rapid shot attack, damage.

Re: 3F - SWW - Part Five: Journey's End

Kassius hits once (9 hp after DR on VH2) and Kibeti hits twice (9 hp on VH1 - I thought for a second that the cat would bypass DR because he does slashing damage with claws and bite, but then remembered that he is missing the 'magic' bit).

VH1 seems a little surprised... well, Kibeti guesses it is, it is hard to tell since the sea-weed man has no face... when little bursts of jungle growth start wriggling out between the fronds of seaweed and locking it in place (ENTANGLED).

OOC: I'm going to give Celene a chance to redo her turn if wished.

I needed the healing. If I can move without an AOO I'll move back towards the ship 30 feet.

Re: 3F - SWW - Part Five: Journey's End

OOC: What the hell, I am sitting here bored so I am going to process a turn. SOrry Kinstal.

Kinstal sheaths his sword, lowers his shield and then throws Celene over his shoulder. He then starts slogging out of the morass as fast as he can with her extra weight (actually, he is still the 'medium load' catagory). He grits his teeth as the inevitable attacks from the enemy come after he drops his guard. (AoO from 2,3 & 4... does 5 get an AoO on Celene from her being picked up? I guess not.) The fighter pays dearly for his bravery as the vine-men start using him like a punching bag (11 hp damage after taking his DR into account). Kinstal makes it all the way to G7.

Logan looks around at the situation. There is a wave of these monsters on their way against them and he is already bleeding heavily. He scrambles across the weed and gets to the ship.

OOC: He's not scared, but doesn't want to add to the party's load of dead or heavily wounded characters.

Skald and Alohan attack the entangled vine horror (VH#1). Skald misses but the captain sinks a heavy blow into the human and rips it apart (9 hp after DR, dead). The native bellows in rage and turns to face the next wave.

Urol throws another bomb from the collection on his waist. He aim is perfect (nat 20) and actually lodged into the mid drift of VH#3. The plant man glances down with an expression of what might almost be surprise on his empty face and then large chunks of him are blow out in a frozen blast (9 hp, but not "re-staggered"). VH#2 is also caught in the blast (5 hp, failed reflex save)

Under Alohan's command, sailor #1 pushes Kassius out of the way and starts loading one balista, while sailor#2 takes the other (ready next round). The other sailors start disappearing below decks to get barrels of pitch and more balista bolts.

Re: 3F - SWW - Part Five: Journey's End

The vine men stop their horrible cries and refocus on the party. With remarkable symmetry they charge forwards, moving across the sodden sargasso like it was a paved street.

Five of them converge on Kinstal and the warrior finds it hard to fend them off with his sword sheathed and a maiden flung over his shoulder. But his giant shield saves the day again, keeping all of them at bay. (Luck + VH2 was staggered and couldn't get a full attack in).
