"These kinds of creatures attack in groups, and something likely set them off to attack the man." Dara looks around carefully, keeping her movements as fluid and slow as necessary.  "No sudden moves and don't take your eyes off of them.  They might not be as aggressive as other animals if not provoked...but either they are dangerous without being provoked or our man provoked them..."

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
The Quarren gurgled what seemed like a sigh, as he kept his weapon barrel trained in the direction of the flying creatures, then added a comment. "Maybe a glow rod set the creatures off, or if they are using audio cues, it could have just been the noise as he was moving. Perhaps if he was trying his comm here, something in that frequency disturbed them. Who knows, it could be many things. We just need to be prepared to get to a defensible position quickly."

Keeping his voice low and his eyes on the floor for any potential obstacles, Leemy adds his ideas on the bats "...could have also been the glow or sound of his plasma torch.  Doubt that an experienced worker would have bothered with the comms in this soup, and that is the only item noteworthy enough to be mentioned in the briefing..."

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
You start to move closer towards the cave, and so far the creatures have not responded to your presence. As you get closer to them you realize they really are just like bats, but large bats and with dangerous looking claws. They're just hanging on the ceiling minding their own business, occasionally one will take off and fly off into the fog, or return from a flight and find a spot on the ceiling, none seem to worry about you.

As you begin to actually enter the cave you notice something standing deeper into the cave, it looks like one of the mining vehicles that they used to mine here. It looks ancient and badly damaged, the metal is heavily corroded in some places. But it looks like someone recently opened up some panels and tried to work on the machine, possibly to get it running again.

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
Kell approached carefully, seeing the scene within the cavern he nodded towards the machine. "I bet they were working on that and disturbed them... or maybe something deeper within the cave." he states as he keeps an eye on the bats themselves. Occasionally he looks around the area for anything that they might be able to use for a defensive position in case this goes south quickly.

15:55, Today: Kell Fett rolled 19 using 1d20+9.  Know: Tactics for tactical defense of the area.  {Performing the most awesome Take 10 ever}

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
Grannos uses his elbow to indicate the machine. Can one of you equipment types get a look at the panel from here for a clue as to what may be a trigger? Grannos didn't think to see if there was a bloody trail leading from the body to here. It's possible he staggered away as they assulted him, and they'd wounded him enough that he eventually keeled over."

He stares at the winged creatures silently for a moment, then continues. "If these things live here than either we exterminate them all, convince them to relocate, or abandon the mine. None are options we're really equipped for or authorized to decide. If we think we've determined the cause of the attack, perhaps reporting back is the best course."

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
Carefully making his way over to the corroded machine, Leemy takes a closer look to try to determine what it used to do, what repairs had been made, and how likely it is for the machine to ever work again.

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
Carefully closing the hatch and returning to the group, the Duran quietly tells the circle what he found: the last worker tried to get access to the ores locked in the ancient machine, but also found the creatures' nest while the corroded door made enough noise to wake the horde.

After that, it was a basic defense of their young by the creatures.  If our workers keep their distance from the mine, then they shouldn't be in any real danger.

In any case, with our plans to use the mines in the future and their sensitivity to sound, we have two realistic options: relocate the creatures to a more remote location, or exterminate them.

"The nest is inside the machine? If this is the case, perhaps a freighter can come down here drop an armored speeder with a harpoon gun and winch and pull the ancient mining machine out with the nest.. that might lead all the creatures out as well. Then someone can seal or ray shield the entrance so they can't return and force them to find another place to roost. That would be the safest option for us and the beasts."

OOC: You don't have any airspeeders but you do have the YT, if you used a strong enough cable, you could undoubtedly pull the mining vehicle outside.

We also have the (single) Dunelizard (the other one was destroyed by a Time Lord, or some similar shenanigans), although it would be far more likely to have its stability rendered nonexistent by the added weight of the machine.

Anyway, how much time has passed?  We only have 4 hours of air, and this opaque atmosphere makes our travel times skyrocket, even without trying to avoid disturbing the killer space bats.

"So, I guess we head back to the base and inform them of what happened? Get the YT and see about hauling the machine out of there?" he states, trying to figure out what his orders were. He never took his eyes off the bats, making sure that they did not make a move while the others were discussing this.

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
The Quarren drooped his large head in mock resignation, but his smile showed through the ruse. "Blast! There goes my target practice. I should have kept my big mandibles shut. Ah, well. Such is life in the big ocean. Let's go get the YT." He kept his eyes on the beasts as he did his little jest. There was some truth to that, he was itching for some action, but risking himself and his team getting sliced up without dire need wasn't very wise.

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
You head back to the mining station and from there up the umbilical elevator all the way up to the station and then head back down towards the planet. Navigation is a bit tricky since the atmosphere has a very negative effect on sensors as well. But eventually you manage to land the YT outside the cave. The noise from the ion engines seems to have stirred up the animals though, as they are now fluttering about and seem highly agitated.

OOC: Whoever goes inside to secure the cable, make a stealth check.

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
Leemy carefully and quietly sneaks into the cave and secures the cable to the old mining vehicle. The bats are clearly agitated and some have started flying around and screeching, though none seems to directly attack Leemy. And though he has to move with caution and care, he manages to make it back to the ship without drawing the wrath of the bats. Once inside, he gives the all clear.

Whoever is piloting make a DC 15 pilot check, and remember that the ship's size and misc modifiers give it -6.

Kell acknowledges the all clear and starts to attempt pulling the vehicle out of the cave with the YT. However, being the first time piloting the YT, he fails somewhat miserably....

14:30, Today: Kell Fett rolled 6 using 1d20+4.  Piloting Check to pull vehicle out of the cave. (+10 -6).  OOC: I rolled a 2.. I hate RPoL's dice roller.. and apparently the feeling is mutual...

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
With Kell at the controls, the ship takes off and for a moment nothing happens, then suddenly the cable snaps tight, and the YT jolts heavily as it suddenly faces a heavy dead weight attached to it, and it jolts and twists and hits the ground for a moment, not doing any significant system damage but making a terrible screeching sound as several deep dents and gashes are made in the bottomside of the ship.

Pulling the mining vehicle out of there so suddenly seems to have enraged all the bats, which are now swarming the ship, which they seem to have decided is a massive predator. They're biting and slamming into the ship. Of course they don't seem to be able to get through the armor. But they do rip off two sensor vines and cause other minor damage in their frenzy.

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
Making his way up from the ship's cargo entrance, Leemy sits down in the co-pilot seat.  "Don't worry about it, Kell.  This is your first time piloting the ship, and it is in a cramped space, on a planet's surface, with a massive unpropeled weight attached to a part of the ship.  I don't know a pilot alive who would get it right on their first try.  Now, let's work together to get it right the second time."

Rolled a 29 with the ship's -6 modifer, or a 35 without.  Probably don't need to use my racial ability to reroll that.  I feel bad about being the one behind the successful important checks this episode...

Episode 2: Monsters in the mist
Once you've made enough distance you ditch the cable and set off into the atmosphere. The bats continue to try and attack you for a while, but soon enough they're forced to give up the attempt as you head into space, and though you certainly didn't make any friends, hopefully that will be the last you see of them.
