Same world, eh? Probably Magehammer? Might not be. Interesting.

I get up and pull out my totem and rest it on my shoulder, ready to chop or point in any direction.

So, I'm the enemy here. If it moves it dies. Unless I can verify no immediate threat, such as if I get the jump on them in an enclosed area.

It's time to make Megumin proud.

If, while I'm walking, I see a non-verser, I point my totem at them and yell in a very memey fashion, "Explosion."

Or really, EXUPULOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSION!

By 'memey fashion' I mean that I draw it out, in reminiscence of Megumin from the anime 'Konosuba'. You can see these videos for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEgfitvnp0M and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coYieIF8I5M

Not Magehammer.

So you start walking towards the other verser sense. To your left is a lush, green forest. To your right is a valley that leads to a mountain. As you're walking, you see letters burned into the side of the mountain, as big as the Hollywood sign. It says:

SLIDEHAMMER
WAS HERE!!!

And something tells you that was the verser you knew as Slider from Verser World.

You keep walking. Eventually you come to a little farm house. A woman and two girls aged 10 and 12 are outside working in a vegetable garden. When you get close, the 12 year old looks down at a crystal necklace she's wearing. It's glowing. Her face becomes a mask of horror. She says to the woman:

"Oh Ma, he's verserscum. You know what they say he's going to do to all of us."

And the woman approaches you. She's 35 or so. Quite, the MILF, cougar, or whatever word you want to use for an attractive older woman. Speaking completely calmly and never breaking eye contact with you, she starts unbuttoning her blouse.

"I'll let you do anything you want to me. Anything. Do you understand? Just please don't touch my daughters. Please."

She speaks not with fear, but with the fierce determination of a mother who would do anything to protect her children. She's hoping you will be satisfied with her and leave the daughters alone.

OOC) Good chance to get some information from non-combatants.

OOC) I wrote this version of the world for Krillis. Krillis just met Magehammer and had been spending the last five years training in, among other things, wilderness survival. He also had a magical Order hammer. I figured this would be a perfect world for him. An evil superverser rampaged through the world, then Krillis shows up armed with a magical Order hammer and five years of intensive training. Unfortunately, he decided he didn't want to play anymore.

"Slidehammer. Slider."

When I see the words burned into the side of the mountain, I chop towards the words on the mountain and channeling Chaos, creating light, heat, and/or movement on a molecular scale, I call to mind images of explosions from various forms of media.

"Explosion!"

Regardless of how that turns out, I continue along.

Ahh verserscum. Verser scum. Or as it tends to be, given some of the versers I've been been meeting, versers cum.

"Leave your daughters alone? That can be arranged, but before that, I need some information from you. If I like what I hear, I will leave your daughters alone. If not... well, they'll be touched, to say the least."

I walk over towards the mother, still ready to just say 'fire' if they try something, and burning them all to a crisp with elemental fire.

"You can keep your clothes on for now, too distracting otherwise.

"So, first question. What's the history between people and versers on this world? Subquestion: Any notable versers aside from Slidehammer/Slider?"

It's far enough away that you don't really hear the explosion, but you see it. You leave a nice crater in the side of the mountain. All that's left is:

S-------R
W----E!!!

quote:
"Leave your daughters alone? That can be arranged, but before that, I need some information from you. If I like what I hear, I will leave your daughters alone. If not... well, they'll be touched, to say the least."

She says "Mary, Laura, get in the house right now!!!"

And the two girls disappear into the house.

quote:

She looks like she's expecting something like that. Tense, on edge. Expecting you to do something horrific.

quote:
"You can keep your clothes on for now, too distracting otherwise.

She looks moderately relieved. Still expecting something.

quote:
"So, first question. What's the history between people and versers on this world? Subquestion: Any notable versers aside from Slidehammer/Slider?"

She says "It was about a year and a half ago. A verser named Slidehammer arrived. He demanded to be made king of all of the land. When people resisted, he burned crops and fields. Raped women and girls. Killed the men. Cursed people with horrible things. They keep many of his victims in an asylum in Mankato." And points in the rough direction of the other verser sense. "After a time, we raised an army to fight him. My husband was among the men who volunteered. He was killed in the final fight. But Slidehammer is gone."

To the second question, just as the mother is about the open her mouth, the 10 year old girl says from the doorway "There's a little girl verser who lives in the woods outside Walnut Grove."

Mother turns around and snaps at her "No there's not!!! Go back inside!!!"

And the 10 year old says back "There is too!!! I've seen her!!!! Nasty Nellie got into a fight with her!!!"

And the mother turns around again and yells "I SAID GO INSIDE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!"

Then the mother turns back to you and bows says "Forgive them. They're just children. Is there anything else you'd like to know?"

"Slidehammer is gone? Did they kill him? Also, what does that girl verser look like? Do you know her name?"

I glare a little at the mother when I start addressing the kids.

If she ignores the glare or otherwise tried to prevent the kids from answering the questions, then I aim the totem off into the distance, at some distant point, and do a repeat of the previous magic, looking the mother dead in the eyes as I say the word, "Explosion."

Watching the fireworks off in the distance and then looking at the mother and kids.

"Now, answer the questions."

The 10 year old girl steps outside. She's fearless.

She doesn't know the verser girl's name, but the description she gives reminds you of eight year old Samantha.

"Disappeared?"

I nod knowingly, "Yea, he died. That's what happens to versers, when we die, we disappear and go to some other world. Our stuff goes with us. It's a pretty cool phenomenon when ya think about it. There are perks to versership. Verserdom. Being a verser."

I consider for a moment if I have any further questions. I also consider if I'm going to do anything to the kids and also the mother.

After much consideration, I opt to pun.

"So." I reach out my hand (not the hand holding the totem) and put it on the mother's shoulder, and look her in the eyes. "I don't like your attitude. I'm here for information, your daughters have that information, and you deny it and tell them to go inside over and over, as if I'm not standing right here."

I look over to the kids, "Hey, kids. Mary and Laura right? Come here."

Looking back to the mother, "Fortunately for you, I believe in very subjective balance. Well, balance, but I'm pretty subjective about what I balance. You gave me information I wanted, normally that warrants a reward. Could be money, could be a new skill, I like to trade for my information. It balances things out.  If you were nicer or more congenial, this could've worked well in your favor.

Everyone should be treated with respect, even people you hate. Especially people you hate. Also especially people that can remove you from existence. The form that respect takes varies, but you should still show some form of respect.

You assumed I was here to rape and pillage, as if all versers do that. Judging all of us based on the actions of one or two of us? That's not fair. Not fair at all. If someone from a neighboring town comes over and steals from you, do you assume everyone from that town will steal from you? Or what if instead of stealing, that person gifted you a horse, or a cow. Would you expect everyone from that town to gift you a horse or cow?  No, that'd be lunacy. Who would be so unreasonable to expect that one person's actions represent the actions of the whole community?

Your attitude towards me was terrible, so minus one for you. You did, however, give me the information I needed, so plus one. We're even now. If you see a new verser, just treat them like a normal person. Greet them, say hello. Don't call that verserscum, that's terribly offensive. Ask how their trip was, maybe inquire if you could help them with directions. Be nice. Versers have lots of abilities. Well, some of us do. We all started new though, if you meet a new verser, you don't want them to think that everyone on this world is garbage. Be friendly to new people.

Now."

Rant over, I look over towards the children. I walk over and put a hand on each of their heads, "Thanks for the information. The name's Avahur."

Stepping back, I grin at the pun.

"There, having touched you and your children, you can clearly see that you're all still fine. Not so bad, right? Thanks again for the info. Good morrow."

I start walking off in the direction of the other verser.

The mother looks horrified when you touch the daughters, relieved when they're still fine. She stares mouth open at you as you give your speech. Then they all breath a sigh of relief when you leave.

So you walk towards the other verser. You pass other farmhouses but see no other people. One farmhouse you pass by has been burned to the ground, and about 20 acres surrounding it. It looks like a nuclear warhead exploded somewhere in the middle of it.

Continuing, you eventually come to a sign that says:

Welcome to Walnut Grove, Minnesota
Lars Hanson, Founder. 1840.

Just beyond that is a small town. Mostly wooden. Maybe 50 or so buildings. There's a brick bank building, a few houses, a blacksmith shoppe, a wood mill, a few stores. Most notable is a large building in the center with a sign that says "Oleson's Mercantile" Hanging in the window is a display of the verser detection crystals. A sign reads "New shipment of Verser Crystals!!" All of the crystals are glowing.

There's people milling about here and there. Going this way and that.

There's a blonde girl of perhaps 10 years old standing outside the mercantile. She's got a black eye and a bandage on her arm. Someone inside yells "Get in here Nellie" and she turns and goes in. So that's what Samantha did to Nellie.

The verser sense is more or less in a straight line on the other side of town.

I continue through town towards Samantha, though I maintain readiness to just shoot fireballs or wind blades at anyone that tries to do something hostile.

We'll see how it goes, maybe lop off an arm or a leg with a blade of wind. Not lethal, but crippling enough.  If they meet me with hostility when I'm literally not doing anything harmful to them, then doom and gloom. 'Wind Blade' for minor offenses, like pointing a ranged weapon at me, 'Fire Ball' for groups of 3-5, explosion magic for 20 - 50, anything more than that is meteor shower.  Or perhaps 'Meatier Shower'. Falling steaks or falling cows, that'd be super amusing. Maybe falling steak pies. Pie in the sky and all that..

I prepare to cast magic, having further considered it, and continue on my way.

GE 10

You make it through the town unmolested. Nobody really even looks at you funny. You get through town and back into the woods. Following the scriff sense for about a half-mile, you find her.

It's Samantha all right. Eight years old. She's dressed in filthy, dirty bib overalls. Her hair is grimy and matted to her head. It almost looks like you could plant seeds in her hair and get them to grow. Her face is filthy dirty. The only spots on her face that are at all clean are underneath her eyes, where her tears have washed the dirt away. She's thin and emaciated. The picture of the starving, abused orphan girl.

She's sitting Indian style on the ground, in front of a small campfire. There's a metal soup can sitting in the fire. It's got a meaty smell coming off of it. There's a yellow plastic bow and arrow set sitting nearby. The kind you would get in a toy store. Plastic bow, arrows with blunted tips. But good enough to take down a rabbit. There's also a magnifying glass and a worn and damaged Swiss army knife. She's got some arrows that she made by tying cut pieces of metal cans into sticks. She's got a number of stuffed animals that she was apparently using for target practice with the bow.

And she's just sitting there on the ground, crying, waiting for whatever is in the can to heat up. She doesn't seem to notice you at all.

OOC) So far, this is how I wrote the world originally.

This one will probably end up with Magehammer eventually. This really reminds me of the novel History's Strongest Senior Brother, with all those folks that are pretty much identical, both male and female, scattered across various worlds.

What to do, what to do...

When she realizes you're there, she immediately jumps to her feet, grabbing the bow and one of the arrows made out of a cut can. She clumsily fits the arrow into the bow and draws it back and levels it at you. She screams:

"YOU STAY AWAY FROM ME!!!! I KNOW HOW TO USE THIS!!!!!"

Then she screams "How do you know my name????? How did I get here?"

She's terrified and shaking to the point that you doubt she could hit anything if she let the arrow fly. However, you do not doubt that she would try to kill you if she felt she had to.

"Woah."

I put my hands up slightly, I mean no harm.

Speaking calmly, "My name is Avahur. I heard about you from some of the local villagers. I also know a few things.

You and I? We're versers. When we die, we go to a new world. That how you got here, you died in a previous world, and now you're here.

You're new at this, being a verser can be scary at the start... or pretty much all the time, depending on your luck and personality.

That said, when I was a new verser, there was someone more experienced to help me out... before driving off a cliff with both of us in it. But, ya know, things happen. Learned a lot in the process.

I'm probably not going to drive you off a cliff, but I can answer any questions you may have, as well as get you some food and clean you up a bit.

Does that sound alright?"

She relaxes a little bit, but does not lower the bow. She asks you seriously:

"Did the gods of Order and Chaos send you?"

And when she says that, you have a flash in front of your eyes and you can now see that she's wearing a black iron pendant. She's wearing it the entire time, but only after she asked could you see it. It's on a black iron chain, and pendant is a square circle. Or a round square. Or a circle with four parallel sides. Your pick.

One side says "ORDO IN CHAOS IN ORDINEM."

The other side says "Auxilia Accitum"

You just know these phrases mean "Order into Chaos into Order" and "To Summon Help." (At least according to Google Translate.) You know the first one is Magehammer's catchphrase.

I smile, "So you've met them. Did they send me? I have no idea. Maybe. I'm not sure how much power or influence they have when it comes to deciding on where a verser ends up; that said, given my last world, it's fair to assume that they did send me. I'm sure they'll tell me otherwise if they didn't. Or they won't, I have no idea what goes through a god's mind.

I am a Chaos Mage, among other things, and as a firm believer in balancing, that is, bringing order to chaos and chaos to order, making it so that both sides are equal; additionally balancing scales.

Since you have that, even if I wasn't already planning to help you, I'll do so anyway because karma is a thing that exists, and again, balance.  The gods of Order and Chaos sowed karma with me when I became a Chaos mage. You have that pendant, so me assisting you in your time of need can help balance the karma between us, as well as sowing some karma with you."

I pull out my totem and aim a bit far away, "Create Tub." I imagine a deep but wide tub, with a ramp going up one side and down into the tub, like a small pool. With the material being used for this tub as clay. The clay would be burnt and the tub would be like pottery, very thick pottery. Suitable for a bath, won't break that easily.

I form this image in mind as I mutter quietly, "Trying to create a pottery tub so she can wash up and be clean. Please let this work."

My goal is to create a bath, using the basics of pottery, creating an outline with clay and then using fire to burn it into a harder object/shape.

If it works, great, I'll fill it water. If it doesn't, then I'll see what it does do and go from there.

If Samantha asks, I explain what I'm doing and why I'm doing it.

She starts to smile back. She lowers the bow. She says "I never met no gods of Order and Chaos. My neighbor, he gave that to me. He said if I was ever in real trouble, the gods of Order and Chaos would send someone to help."

quote:

She nods, wide-eyed. Maybe pretending to understand.

"You're..... you're gonna help me?? OH THANK YOU!!!!!"

And she drops the bow and runs up to you and throws her arms around you. She's just over 4 feet tall, so you can imagine how that is.

She lets go of you and watches. You have to chant this over and over and over. Maybe a half hour. You get kind tired.

The tub starts out about the size of a shoebox. It gradually grows and gets deeper and wider and taller. The ground around it shifts and moves as the clay in the ground gets pulled into the tub. When you want it to be baked, her fire explodes momentarily and the tub is baked hard as a rock. You barely felt anything from the blast.

Samantha just looks up at you, wide-eyed.

I nod at her words and when I'm done making the tub I stretch and lean against a tree.

"That's hard work, but magic is awesome. Just a bit more and it'll be ready."

I rest for a little bit, "It looks like you haven't bathed in a while. I don't have much in the way of soap, but we'll do this the old fashioned way.  While I'm recovering my magical prowess, I'll answer any questions you might have, to the best of my abilities."

I answer any questions she has while I rest.

When I feel sufficiently rested, I create hot water to fill the tub. Or water, and then heat it.  Whichever is required.

Once there is hot water in the tub, "Hop in. I don't have soap, so we'll just keep adding new water. The old dirty water will flow over the edge, while new water is added in. That'll keep happening over and over again until you're done.  Sort of like a shower, but tubs are easier and multi-purpose."

"How did I get here?"
"What's Verserscum?"

There's a small creek running by. When you try to conjure water, the creek gets diverted and flows up the side of your tub. Then a fire lights all around it.

However, when you suggest that she get into the tub, she starts to unsnap her bibs, then realization hits her.

"You want me to get naked!!!!! There was a man in town who said he would feed me if I let him see me naked!!! I got so hungry I almost did it!!!!!"

She won't do it unless you walk away and leave her alone.

Obviously, I'm not turning around, so I'll be adding more water soon.  The water will overflow and your clothes will be dirtier.  Fortunately, I have some thoughts on cleaning them.  Once you are cleaner and your clothes are cleaner and dry, we'll make some food for you."

Once she acknowledges she heard, after a minute or two...

I add more water, stopping after a minute or two.

"Alright, now that you're in the tub, you just enjoy that and scrub up. At least look cleaner. I'm going to add more water soon to wash away the dirty bit... I might actually be able to just straight up clean the water, but I'm less confident in that working, and I would need to turn around for that.

This is just mud, so it pretty much just rinses off. She's a lot cleaner.

quote:
we'll make some food for you."

Here she practically jumps out of the tub and asks "What kind of food? I'm so hungry......"

quote:
"Alright, I'm adding more water. Please hold onto the sides of the tub and keep your head well above the edge. More water is coming in, which will then spill over."

I add more water, stopping after a minute or two.

So you do. It works just like you said.

OOC) I totally did not expect you to take responsibility for Samantha. I honestly thought you were just going to forcibly deprive her of her virginity then verse her out.

"Soup, probably. Might be something else. I have no idea."

I point off behind me in the general direction of her clothes.

"Your clothes are over there right?"

I recall what her clothes look like and start chanting "Wind Transport". I imagine the clothes getting picked up by the wind and floating over to where I am, then hovering in front of me.

Once the clothes are hovering in front of me, I use water magic to "Clean Clothes", Chaos Magic to dry the clothes by creating some heat and accelerating the drying process / making the water evaporate quicker.

Picking up the clothes, dismissing the wind magic, I ask Samantha. "Are you clean?"

Probably, but that could also be a euphemism, now that I think about. Still probably yes on that front too.

If she says 'yes' or otherwise affirms it, then I'll reach one hand behind me to touch the water and start chanting, "Water Return", to send the water back over to the river.

Use more Chaos Magic to accelerate the drying process on the tub. Once that is done, hand over Samantha's clothes.

OOC) Ya know, as a Chaos mage, you could have just removed her "Dirtiness Chaos" and made her clean that way. Just saying.

Samantha is fascinated by all of this magic that you're doing. She says "Can you teach me how to do that?" as she's getting dressed.

But her and her clothes are as clean as you can make them at the moment.

When you mention soup though, she kind of panics and runs over to her fire. That's what was in the can she was heating up. It's done now. Just some rabbit and wild berries she found growing.

She tells you "The man who runs the mer-mer-mercantile???? He leaves cans of food outside for me sometimes. He's nice."
