What rolls would we need to make for this?

Re: Questions and answers
My current thoughts on skill breakdown for this scenario:

For the basic "Climb out of the cart and hang on the side to operate the brake with a foot" manuever, I'd say either a Climb or Acrobatics roll (player's choice). This would also be true for anyone trying to move between carts, though the DC and consequences for failure would be lower.

Once hanging out there, Perception and possibly reflex saves might or might not play a role in staying there.

Modifications to the mechanisms (brakes, connections between cars, wheels, etc) would be Disable Device or straight Dexterity checks.)

Trying to notice details as they whiz past is Perception, as is trying to get a sense of what's coming up ahead by peering furiously into the darkness and trying to catch echoes, glows, or hints of reflected light.

Wheeee!

Hmm, I actually put a rank into Climb. Never thought I would need it.

Glenn:

Is it possible for Kord to use his falchion (even if it causes damage to it) to activate the brake by reaching out and putting pressure on it?

Esko Vladikov:
Any bonus for Profession: Miner? :D

Technically, I have that as well at +4.

Re: Questions and answers
Kord, yes you can try to operate the pedal with the blade of your falchion. Damage to the heavy weapon is unlikely but it may not be a particularly effective way to operate the brake. Additionally, I suppose there's the possibility that you would drop the weapon...

Profession: Miner would have helped to locate the brake, but mostly the skill is currently telling you both that riding hundred-year-old rails in decades-old unmaintained minecarts is very dangerous. :)

However, I'm sure some other uses for the skill will be coming up shortly. I'll try and keep in mind that you have it.

What does that mean? Is it going to cost me a move action?

Re: Questions and answers
It will only cost you a move action if it would normally. It's just going to require a good roll because of current circumstances. (Which can't possibly have been covered by their existing training, after all.)

No, they're sticking their heads up and enjoying the rush of wind, tongues hanging out. You only need to roll if you are going to try and get them to do something.

Ok, got it.

So, we can't get out because we are over a chasm, and there is a good chance the rail is loose and we derail.

You guys are doing fine, it should be faster paced than this, but I fell behind at work a bit, and had to scramble to keep up. RPOL got ignored, which makes me sad. :(

Doing a quick update now.

Re: Questions and answers
As far as what you can be doing, I enjoy innovative and adventurous solutions for these kind of scenarios, but if people can't come up with anything, I'm usually not adverse to more brute-force problem solving. I don't usually go in with a particular solution in mind. (Though I usually do brainstorm to make sure that I can think of two or three solutions myself.)

(In general, I tend to favor genre solutions over out-of-genre ones, and I tend to favor active solutions involving multiple party members over quick mechanical solutions involving a skill check.)

But like I said, in this case, you're doing fine, it's just me that failed to keep things moving.

If we are relying on Klacks strength checks for this, we is Doomed.

21:41, Today: Klack Copperwise rolled 1,6 using d20,d20 with rolls of 1,6.  STR checks.
