Alden walked around the room slowly and deliberately, observing the architecture of the room with a dispassionate neutrality. He had long awaited this moment, his dreams one step closer to being realized, his efforts given form and recognition. It should have felt great but it didn't. The distant sounds of celebration and revelry were bitter to his ears and his spirit.

Why is it that times like this brings me back to then, back in the Breiindirian Empire. Back when my name was still Alden. Now who am I?

He looked down at his diplomas, all penned to Eliott Moreau, the supposed Napoleic migrant, a fabrication of his imagination.

I wonder whatever became of my parents? Did they search for me? Are they still searching?

Alden grabs the front of his shirt as if to relieve intangible pain from his chest.

No. They are probably gone now. Bodies broken under the heel of the upper caste.

Alden persisted that his parents had passed some years ago. He hadn't decided if it was the pragmatism in him or if he was simply too cowardice to think of their continued suffering and heartache. Shaking his head he dismissed those thoughts. Regardless of what the truth was this was neither the time nor place to delve into it.

Gentle and hesitant footsteps sounded from a side door. A small, mostly Native Arcanan, young woman entered. It was Shara; he had some classes with her several years ago, but like most early Alchemy students had dropped out due to the extreme patience needed to develop the senses and thought processed needed to twist molecules to fit together with the mind, which were truly the abilities that made up Alchemy. Alden doubted he would have remembered Shara, except for he remembered everything. As she drew closer he noticed a sealed note in her hand.

"This is for you," she said a little hesitantly before handing him the missive. The note was small and made of the commonest parchment and the seal was a waxy deep bronze. Please deliver to Eliott Moreau, was inscribed beautifully in a neat hand on the outside. As the seal’s scent gently hit his nose he had impressions of himself opening the seal and the image of the note disintegrating into less than dust if anyone other than himself tried to read its contents. He instantly knew three things. One, that someone had created a tamper proof seal on the note with alchemy that only he could open safely. Second, to make such an item keyed to him would require the maker to have some of his essense, such as hair, saliva, or nail trimmings. Third, only a very skilled alchemist could have made such an item, which its current bearer was not.

Alden had made Eliott out to be a rather pleasant person, much dissimilar to himself, but he could tell by the hesitant nature of Shara's steps that she wasn't here for a cordial visit. That aside it was best to keep up his persona. Smiling gently at her he accepted the missive. "Thank you Shara." he said with a slight incline of his head. It was then that his persona faltered, if only for a brief moment. The smell of the seal came through clearly and Alden became tense almost immediately. Someone had obtained his essence, a piece of himself. How they had managed such a feat he could not be sure but the fact remained that it had been done. Not only that but whomever had assembled this seal was no mere novice and more to the point they deemed the contents of the letter precious enough to expend potentially costly components on. With a subtle gulping inhale Alden opened the missive and read its contents.

The note was short and written in Frien in the same hand as outside, it said; Eliott Moreau, We thought it best to warn you that you have come to the attention of Notable persons. That was it, no signature, no other indication of who had sent the note.

Alden's mind was thinking rather rapidly at this point. We? Who was we? Did they mean a group or was this the royal usage of the word? Could it be that he has an ally somewhere or was this a threat masquerading as a warning? There were so many possibilities and not enough evidence to support any of them. Regaining his composure he looked to Shara. "Would you mind telling me who gave you this missive?"

Damn of course they wouldn't reveal themselves so easily. "Oh I see. If you would I'd like to ask you a few questions. The missive you see, it was rather pressing and I'd like to find its sender as soon as possible." Alden was pleasant in his tone and bore a slight smile, all of course were hollow in reality.

Don't be smug. Alden meet her smirk with a slight smile. "You are absolutely right." He then held up a single finger. "So my first question is who has access to your books?" If I can establish who might have had access to the book I can narrow down possible senders.

“Well you know,” Shara began with a grin obviously enjoying Eliott’s pradicament. “There are so many. After I dropped out of alchemy I took up cultural studies. I mean really, you study alchemy for four years and you learn to make what; a healing potion that you can practically buy at any shop. Well anyway the particular book in question was The Impact of Motism on the Development of History. I checked it out from the library last week, but of course the note wasn’t in the book then. I have hauled it to most of my classes. Though usually I have it right by me, unless it was when I fell asleep one of the many times in Europan politics, professor Eigan is rather dull. Then I left it unattended a few times during lunch. And it is in the back room during archeology lab, and my roommate has access because I leave it in my room during non-class hours. Of course someone could have snuck in my room over the weekend, I live in Montrose Hall, there are only about 300 students living there. I usually lock the door, but the Hall Marm has a key.” She pauses and looks at you quizzically. “And how does that narrow down your search?”

Shara definitely loves to talk, I suppose I'll give her that. Alden chuckles slightly and rubs the back of his head sheepishly. "I suppose that it doesn't really." Actually yes it does but I still need more. "So on a related note why did you check out the book? Was it for a project or personal curiosity?"

Shara perked up a little more at his interest. “It is for my thesis. I’ve been gifted a bit with tongues, so I thought I would do my thesis on the impact of Motism on language development in Arabask and Byzentenia. I might even be able to extend it to dialects of Southern Europa, Carthagia, or some of the other nearby counties. The history book is one of many I have been hauling around, but it is rather dull. I have had a hard time plowing through much of it.”

"Of all the things I have ever heard of this has to be one of the most uninteresting. Placing one of his hands under his chin and shifting his weight off to his non-dominant leg he gave Shara a slight smile. "Fascinating. I've always been interested in the development of the language but I never considered how Motism might affect that. Tell me what brought about this line of thought?" I'll pursue this line of questioning for a moment, perhaps something useful will come of it.

“Well after Alchemy, I was taking some general classes,” she said her expression beginning to burn with passion, “and I was thinking I would major in languages, but discarded that idea when I realized that those classes were a complete waste of time, I mean languages aren’t that hard; You really don’t need to study them for years. I already spoke four languages when I started Uni, and I have picked up four more on my own while here. So anyway, I was taking a cultural development class when Professor Aopes, who is obviously the greatest professor here, brought up Aristo Pickering’s Work on the impact of language on cultural development. After reading his works I really started to get into the impact of language on culture. I mean there are so many simply fascinating examples. Professor Higgins has demonstrated that the Breiindirian class system has led to slightly different dialects. The Carthagian houses each have key phrases and house dialects that let them identify one of their own. In Runesia, there are clans that live high in the mountains, that have 17 different distinct words for rock. North Arcanan have 19 different words for snow. There is one professor in Europa, a Doctor Voohittle, that claims he can speak to different animals, not like I believe it, but he does make valid points about what an animal language would be like. Dogs have more words for scents for example, and birds have more words for air and weather. I have heard rumors that the Incans have more words for light, power, and mercrity than we do from some of my archeology classmates. My special interest though became the Byzentanian language and culture. It is a fascinating language, with most words having several layers of meaning, with shifting meaning depending upon context. It can be aligned to formed into codex system, that allows transmission of blocks of information in short space, can form complex numerical cyphers, and really shatter conceptions about how culture operate. I even found one codex that encoded another set of codexes, it was in Ancient Byzentian, which I have barely begun to master, but woo, it may contain volumes in a scroll of only a meter or two. Talk about fascinating. Then you drop in the religion of Motism, and if you look you clearly begin to see patterns on how it affects language, it is most pronounced in Arabaskan, like the six line liturgical system in their poetry, but if you look close you see it begin to spread beyond to other regions. I am surprised I could not find very little written on it. There were a few books in the library of Alezandaria and I was able to secure some copies, but they were so superficial, so I just had to write about it. I will finish my thesis this year, and give me a few more years and I think I can fill a few volumes on the subject.”

"Perhaps that will prove useful one day but it doesn't really narrow anything down. Damnit Alden there must be something.""Interesting. Very interesting. I must say Shara you have me wondering if I majored in the right fields." Alden laughed briefly. It was a full laugh that came from the stomach; he had spent many nights practicing it for the sake of authenticity when it came to situations such as this. "As if there is any true merit in the study of languages over that of alchemy and mercronics." "So in all of this how did you come to check out that history book? Was it by recommendation or random chance? He tone and body language was inquisitive rather than pressing. It was better to give the impression that he was merely talking out of general interest rather than still searching for information.

Shara smiled, "I hope you find who you are looking here. If you need me for anything else, I will be here for one more semester. I was hoping to stay on and earn a doctorate, but the tribe is calling me home. Oh one more thing," she pressed a coin into Alden's hand. "I don't need the money, you can have it." She turned and walked away. People trickled into the halls from the finished closing ceremonies, soon Alden would be surrounded by the press of newly graduates, friends, and families.

Alden accepts the coin from Shara and returns her smile. "Thank you Shara." It would be rude to reject her gift but why was she giving me money in the first place?" When Shara had her back turned to him he would inspect the money in search of anything that might be out of place about it. Other than that he would mingle with his fellow graduates in passing for a few minutes before excusing himself to attend to other matters. Shara's incessant ramblings narrowed down possible writers of the missive but it was still far too many to gain any headway with. He would have to prepare for a speedy escape in the event he had actually been discovered.

"A strange coin for Shara to have but perhaps it is mere coincidence. I suppose I'll have to include her on my list of possible missive senders, however unlikely." Alden made his rounds with the other graduates and steadily made his way to the door. Leaving the hall he left the University and made his way to his bolthole, making sure to take unnecessary turns and loop back to ensure he was not followed; at least not with ease.

Alden's bolthole was a small sub-basement that had long since been forgotten. Malthot like many other old cities was in fact a city above a city with many structures having sunken into the ground due to poor foundation. This particular sub-basement was constructed as a storage cellar to a house that was lost in a building fire and before it could be reconstructed the entire block was sinking quickly and it was abandoned.

Alden had spent the years of his studies fixing up the place and it had served him well as his hiding spot for various pieces of equipment he was able to squirrel away. Each of the walls was stone mired in a veneer of lichen and packed dirt. Alden had braced the walls and ceiling with wooden frames and lined the floor which was bare concrete with an assortment of various rugs. The bolthole lacked many homely touches but he had managed to put up a set of shelves to keep things off the ground and had a cot with a few wool blankets.

The entire room was illuminated with a few kerosene lamps and heated with a larger kerosene heater. He had considered building a proper heater but with the entrance being partially obscured by a concrete pillar it made getting larger objects down here a pain.

Still he was glad to have it.

OOC: Took some liberties with the history of the city but its based on the United States so its not that far fetched.

Once that was complete Alden leaves the bolthole and repeats the same process he did coming to leave. He returns to the University and attempts to track down Shara's research adviser.
