Languages of Middle-earth

Endor is filled with many diverse cultures and languages.  Some are languages of lore, ancient and seldom used, beyond formal occasions and documentation, or by elders who remember the ancient days.  Perhaps the greatest linguists in all of Middle earth are the Eldar, for they were so eager to understand the world around them that they gladly and skillfully learned the tongues of all other speaking beings.

By the Fourth Age, however, the Elvish languages are no longer widely used, as they once were.  Westron has become the lingua franca of North Western Endor, though the Elves who yet remain and the Dunedain still maintain the Elvish tongues with reverence.  By far the most common languages are the Mannish tongues, mostly those based on the diverse Northron tongues, mostly decended from ancient Rhovanian.

The following is list of some of the remaining languages used in some capacity in the West of Middle-earth.  It is by no means complete, of course.  Most intelligent beings understand Westron, at least to some extent, except perhaps for the most primitive and or isolated cultures such as the Hillman of Eriador or the Woses of Druadan Forest.

ELVISH LANGUAGES

Bethteur (Wood-elven) Silvan Elvish, spoken by the Wood-elves and Avari.
Sindarin (Grey-elven)Speech of the Sindar, mostly in Lorien, Rivendell, and Mithlond.
Quenya (High-elven) A tongue of lore, rarely spoken except by Eldar, Ents, and Sages.

DWARVISH LANGUAGES

Khuzdul
(Dwarvish) Ancient language taught by Aulë to the Seven Fathers.  A cradle speech, revered and little changed by time.  It is not taught to others.
Iglishmek (Gesture speech) a clever sign and gesture-language, used to communicate in secret.  Like all dwarvish, it is not taught to others.
Mablûl (Goldspeech) Khuzdul variant used by Bávor's Folk, known as the Mablad.
Umitic (Half-dwarvish) Language of the Half dwarves, or Umli of the Far North

ENTISH Long sonorous agglomerated speech of the Tree herders of Fangorn.

KUDUK (Hobbitish)Old language of the Halflings, related to Eothrik, the ancestor of modern Rohirric.

MANNISH TONGUES

Adûnaic-archaic language of Numenor.  Still spoken by some of he Dunedain.
Atliduk-tongue of the rustic Beornings of Mirkwood and Northern Rhovanion.
Apysaic-base language of the southern Haradrim.
Blarm-speech of the Hillmen of Eriador.  Related to Dunael.
Delsk-Old tongue spoken by the Bardings of Dale.
Dunael-language of the Dunlendings, descended from ancient  Donael.
Folyavultig-common speech of the Dorwinrim.
Gramuik-speech of the Gramuz or Grasslanders of Northern Rhovanion.
Haradaic-tongue of the more northern tribes of the Haradrim.
Labba-primitive tongue of the Lossoth of the Forodwaith.
Logathig-common tongue of the Easterling tribes, including some among the Dorwinrim.
Nahaiduk-language of the Woodmen of Mirkwood.
Neneduk-old tongue of the Lakemen of Esgaroth. Almost competely supplanted by Weston.
Pukael-ancient speech of the primitive Druedain. Unrelated to other Mannish tongues.
Rohirric-language of the Rohirrim of Rohan.  Related to other Northron tongues.
Varadja-Harsh language of the Variags of Khand.
Waildyth-A system of signs and equivalent nature signals, used by the Beornings.
Westron-most widely spoken language in North western Middle-earth.  The "common" tongue.

DARK TONGUES
Orkish Many dialects, some based upon Black Speech, others on Westron, debased, grammatically crude and rife with curse words.
Morbeth (Black Speech) Invented by the Dark Lord.  Native tongue of the Uruk-hai and the Olog-hai, along with other minions of the shadow.

MISCELLANEOUS TONGUES
Raven speech Raucous, guttural tongue of the great northern ravens.  Known to some Dwarves of Erebor.
Throssel tongue Quick high melodic tongue of the northern thrush.  Known to some of the Bardings of Dale.
