Well I should be ready very soon, so I wanted to open things up to see if you have any questions, or comments.  Also so we can get to know one another a bit and discuss how or if your characters know one another.   I've had three others apply and I'm working with them.  Hopefully they will join as well.

Well, I suppose I'll start things off.

I'll be playing Kronin here, a "pure" Fighter and a descendant of one of the Dwarves who died at the gates of Moria during the last reclamation attempt. I consider myself a casual Tolkien fan and am very excited about the level of detail and effort I've seen put into the game so far.

Looking forward to playing with you, and to learning more about the cast of character we have shaping up for the story.

Hello, I will be playing Evia, Daughter of Dwalin. Yep that is the one, she has her fathers engaging personality and at this point is a pure fighter. This particular region of Middle Earth has been a personnel favorite for decades, but this is the first time I have been able to play in it.

Hi Kronin, thanks for jumping in, and for the compliments.  I have worked on this for quite a while so I hope it's amazing. So far you and Evia's enthusiasm is infectious.  I can't wait to get started; I want to see what everyone comes up with too.   This truly is a labour of love, I read the hobbit for the first time thirty nine years ago.  I've loved Tolkien ever since.   I intend for this to be the best game I've ever run, which will take some wonderful players.  Thanks to you both for giving me a chance.

So far your characters have some similarities, and definitely some differences, but I think you'll work together well.  What was your favourite character from another game, if I may ask?

Oh, by the way Kronin, congratulations are in order as well.  There are currently 35 posts in this game and thirty four of them are mine.  Thanks for being my first official post!

I have a ex pat English book shop owner in a Silent Legions game who I have been playing for many years, though it looks as if the game may have finally ceased which is a real shame. It was set in Southern California and was very well researched, great occult mysteries and adversaries.

I played a US Federal Agent in a supernatural themed game that was a lot of fun, huge number of dedicated players, so it was very involved managing a team, outwitting the competition so to speak, making his superiors happy and turning contacts against each other. There was a deep human element to it however, that saw him softening as the years passed and really made him question his orders and why he followed them...balanced against his career, the camaraderie and  friends he had lost along the way.

It was a rare environment of very talented and dedicated writers.

Hey Evia, welcome and sorry I didn't see your post last night.  I made mine right before I went to bed.  I generally have to be at work for seven thirty am.  I'm seriously getting excited that this game will actually happen and I'm thrilled you will both be a part of it.

I really wanted to find good players, old school players who want a challenging game and, from what you tell me you're both the sort of role players I've always gamed with :)  My intentions are to mix some politics, adventure/survival and mystery into the game if I can, but really its about where you guys want to take things.  The basic premise is there as a goal, when or if you actually make it there is very much up to you.

Thanks for your answers; those both sound like amazing games, the kind I would really enjoy.  I'm not familiar with Silent Legions, but anything supernatural or occult has my approval.  Great adversaries, well researched mysteries, talented and dedicated players and a Game Master that challenged you.  Its nice to know those kinds of games are still out there.

I have played a lot of games over the years, but I think my favourite character was a druid from my friend Steve's game.  He ran an A D and D game for years, set in ancient/fantasy Ireland.  It was a brilliant campaign that lasted about five years.  My character's real name was Liam Ui'Neill, but his Druid Name was Cieran.  It was a very intense game with great role players and a plot that swept up not just Ireland, but the surrounding Celtic peoples magical and mortal, in a war that changed everything.

I admit, some of the greatest role playing moments I've ever had were in that game.  Those incredible moments that stay with you years after.  We were pushed to our limits, our battles were brutal and costly, but when we triumphed the sense of accomplishment was incredible and worth everything we had paid for it.  It was that kind of game, but it was twenty years ago and I live in a different country now.

As much as I hate to wax nostalgic, there is something appealing about the "old school" of role playing...games designed from the heart, by people who had a passion for what they did.

They did not make games for a demographic or a market, they made them for friends, friends they sat around a dining room. table with, rolled some dice, had a few laughs and went home with fond memories.

Like yourself, it has been years since I've actually been in a position to play that sort of game, but there is something  about it that keeps me looking for like-minded folks to share the hobby with.

I've found a few here on RPoL, people that have gotten married, had children and advanced careers all while we told stories together, and they are a bright spot in my day as I catch up on threads. So here's hoping that this is one more, and that this is the beginning of one of those rare gems that can stand the test of time.

We do have a third player :-). Noin son of Balin who, I believe, may be playing a cleric of Aulë.

I have a question for the group as well.  Currently I believe weapon specialization should be for single class fighters, rangers and rune casters only,.  Do you think it should be allowed for multi classes as well?

Welcome Noin! Glad to have you with us.

I may be a bit biased, but I'm a fan of leaving it a fighter specific benefit. Every class has their pros and cons, and I had always associated weapon specialization, and the greater version as one of the things that set the Fighter apart.

All classes can wear armor, all classes can fight, but it was kind of their thing.

That being said I would not have an issues if we decided to make it more available.

I have to agree on those points as well. It always seemed to be a very fighter specific bonus. Welcome Noin as well.

I appreciate your feedback.  You think along the same lines as I do.   Fighters should have something unique to them, otherwise who would want to play one?  Specialization is for those who devote their lives specifically to combat.  Double specialization should be for pure fighters alone who make weapons their life. The way I see it, multi class fighters do not have time for the training needed to specialize, since they have other skills to learn as well.

In other news, we have a dwarf Artificer joining as well :-).

That would be me!

Never played in Middle Earth before & playing AD&D for overy 30 years, I've always loved playing the small folk of fantasy gaming - dwarves, gnomes and halflings.

Here is a little inspirational video I found - hope it gets your adventurous feelings going like it does mine for this particular game!

"The world is grey, the mountains old,
The forge's fire is ashen-cold;
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls:
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls;
The shadow lies upon his tomb
In Moria, in Khazad-dûm."

I am beginning to see how this group may take shape :-).   Kronin your character has recently come from the Ered Luin (blue mountains) with a caravan as I recall.  There is reason for the Lord of Gond-Amon in the Blue Mountains, to send an envoy to Erebor.  The Lord's name is Gálin Wide-blade, Chieftain of Dwálin's Folk; the most powerful Broadbeam remaining in Middle-earth.  He has sent his only child, his son Frálin, to speak on his behalf with King Thorin III.  You were attached to the embassy, as a guard most likely, and have only recently arrived in Erebor for the first time.

Evia perhaps you were asked by your father, Lord Dwalin the Old, to meet the Broadbeam Lord's envoy at Bree and to guide them safely to the Kingdom Under the Mountain and that is where you met young Kronin.  You are much older and perhaps a bit more traveled than Kronin, but you've developed a friendship along the way.  What do you think?

Looking forward to the off and maybe patching a few of you up.
