Re: [F.A.Q] Magic 101 with Oggy
How long does it take to cast a spell from the spell book?

(I'm guessing 'mostly don't bother in combat')

Example
At start: book is closed

So we need to find the spell in the book (post it notes help)
Then we have the spell casting process itself

Is that about it?

Can we photograph the pages of the spell book and work from the photographs?

Can we copy the pages of the spell book and work from the copy?

Repost from the OOC Thread
Hey... theme question or two:

  • When Anda casts a spell, does it come out the same way as when Susan or Victor casts a spell, stat/skill differences aside?
  • Can spells be "themed"? Or, are they "themed" right out of the gate? For example, Anda took force wall - is it a plane of energy? Does it have a color? Is it transparent or opaque?
  • If I wanted, could Anda's force wall be made of natural materials from the vicinity? Rock, roots, etc?

@Susan

Out of combat, looking for the spell and casting time don't matter

In combat, you'll have to spend 1 round looking for the spell. Passing a Knowledge skill check to get the right one (failing it means I get to choose the spell your character thinks is right.)

And whiles Post-It notes won't help in a in-game bonus. And Copying pages, photocopying them or any other means won't work. The Mage Council has that under lock and key to prevent leaking information.

I have it set up this way to prevent players from having a large list of spells they can reliably cast. Helps enforce the feeling of you are still learning spells and there is still much for everyone to learn.

@Anda

I have it in my head that everyone starts off doing everything Thematically the same. An arcane bolt among trainees all look the same. But as they learn and grow they come into their own, their spells start to reflect that change. Like how when kids learn how to draw it all looks alike from kid to kid, but when they're older they might draw in the style of comics, or cartoons, or manga, or abstract.

A spell cast by Oggy may look different when Kiva casts the same spell

As for the force wall coming from rock and roots. No. That would be more like controlling the objects around you. The force wall is willing a barrier into existence. Building it with arcane magic. You can decide what it looks like in the end.

Re: Repost from the OOC Thread
Are spells obvious (except  invisibility or other spells designed for stealth)

For example an armour spell could cause a slight shimmering around you.

@Pros to them being obvious
This stops us walking around muggles invincible with every spell in the book on us, and means that there is a strong value in us learning the defensive spells. We are a lot more concerned about baddies, and there will be fights in which we don't have our defences up. Maybe as many as half of them

@Cons to them being obvious
The alternative is good too though. It means mages are just harder than normals. A force to be concerned about in the magical world. And there aren't actually that many spells. We would all have an armour increase spell, and a threat increase spell, a single stat buffed and that would be it. Oggy could even advise us of 'this is your morning routine...' This is how White Wolf Mage's are portrayed and that works quite well.

It's a 'flavour of the world thing'. Personally I like both flavours, so I'm ambivalent to the answer

Re: Repost from the OOC Thread
On familiars...

If Anda concentrates while casting the spell REAL HARD on having Rebecca Romijn as a familiar, can he do it?

On an unrelated note, do we get to select what out familiar's form is, or do you?

Forced to choose an animal, I'm thinking Golden Retriever. Unfortunately.

@animals
Guideline was 'small animal'. Cat, toad, bird

What about a http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki...King_Charles_Spaniel

Temperament: Playful, Adaptable, Fearless, Patient, Affectionate, Sociable

Oh: and they are a ladies dog. Like nothing better than to sit in the lap of a female. When I visit a friend who has one (which is unbelievably cute) if I sit down... It's about 2 seconds before the stealth 'creep onto lap' starts

Just an idea though.

In reply to Susan Brooks (msg # 10):

Actually, because he is 16 years old, and is a tad on the clueless side, he *is* going to think about a hot blonde for a familiar - Rebecca Romijn is the model is his head.

I wonder how well he would have to roll. :-)

Re: Repost from the OOC Thread
As much as I would like to see everyone's reaction to Anda summoning a hot blonde, it cannot be.

And every player chooses which animal they are. Susan is right, only small animals allowed. dogs are fine so long as they're a small breed.

Re: Repost from the OOC Thread
Flight speed would increase as you get better as a mage. I say it starts out as 15mph, a few miles faster than the average running speed.
