An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
-= from Dallwell Noodle Shop: Cobin =-

As the blinding white light fades from Cobin's vision, he finds that he's lying flat on his back in a lush green meadow dotted with the big gray flowers of the lizard-eating carnivorous plants that surround his home village. The sun is shining. The sky is blue. The clouds are white and fluffy. The anteaters are flying high overhead, singing their peculiar three-tone tunes to each other.

From somewhere in the distance to his left, out of sight behind a small hill, the voice of a little girl is calling his name.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin blinks several times, checks that things are working - limbs, tongue, teeth, and sits up slowly as he checks to make sure he is still himself and his supplies came with him to ... home? He ponders, briefly, the concept of weapons returning people 'home' as an attack, and those it would work on as he gathers his thoughts and stands.

"How peculiar," half to himself, and turns toward the voice, making his way toward the little girl cautiously. He has no idea if this is real, but thinks it would be rather rude to treat it as if it wasn't until he knows otherwise. Is the voice of the girl at all familiar?

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin finds that he is in fine health and has everything with him that he had in the noodle shop. As he gets up and begins walking up the hill toward the girl's voice, he recognizes it as belonging to his adoptive mother's sister's granddaughter. She is calling for him with some urgency.

As he reaches the top of the hill and can see down the other side to his home village in the small valley below, he can see that the far side of it is on fire. A small band of raiders mounted on six-legged fuzzy creatures that look vaguely like Mabel, but faster, is shooting flaming arrows into the buildings. The villagers are running about in a panic.

The girl is running up the side of the hill toward him. "Cobin? Cobin! Help us!"

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin's eyes widen in shock. Everyone has said the raiders wanted him, that if he left they would leave the village alone.

"Get to safety," he tells the girl, not bothering to ask why she ran toward an alien light or how she knew it was him. He takes a moment to gather himself and asses, then begins moving toward the town, preparing to hurl his spear at the nearest raider once in range, hoping to draw others into a cluster he can use his own cypher on, and is treating the entire thing as real until the world offers proof otherwise.

A random cypher sending him back home just as everyone is being attacked is strange, yes, but he knows better than most that sometimes strangeness can be miracles.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
The girl runs alongside Cobin back to the village, but breaks off toward the side not being attacked once they've reached the outskirts.

As Cobin gets closer to the battle, he can see that the few glaives of the village are just coming into range with their spears, including the one who had trained him. There are eight raiders in all - six with bows and flaming arrows, and two with lances. The closer of the lancers spots Cobin's approach and shouts "The blue one! There he is!" One of the archers turns to aim an arrow at Cobin.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin puts thoughts of asking for surrender aside as the third weapon, adjusts his footing and hurls his spear toward the archer aiming their arrow. He's hoping to at least wound one, or draw a couple toward him and use the cypher on them.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin's spear hits the archer before he can finish drawing his bow, and knocks him off his mount. The flaming end of his arrow starts a small fire in the grass, but is quickly stamped back out under the many feet of his animal. The injured raider clutches at the wound in his side as he scrambles out of the way.

Meanwhile, the lancer and three of the other archers get their mounts turned around and charge toward Cobin. The archers ready their arrows...

Cobin doesn't smile as they get into the position he was hoping for, raises his wrist, a strange metal flowing about it like water before hardening as he points it toward them ...

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Out from the device on Cobin's wrist, what looks like a small white pebble shoots out toward the charging raiders. It hits the lancer's chest and seems to bounce off harmlessly, but then emits a shockwave of shimmering energy.

A moment later, all of the riders suddenly clutch inward at themselves, while all of their mounts scream and come to a sudden halt. Two of the archers accidentally fire their arrows into the grass in front of them, which is instantly ablaze as if the ground hasn't seen rain in a decade. The animals scream again and scatter, their riders trying to bring them back under control while looking like they're in quite a bit of pain.

Meanwhile, the first archer has just gotten back on his mount, and he hurls Cobin's spear back at him.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin watches the effect with outward calm, eyes narrowing at the unnatural fire. He assess the enemy, then almost casally steps out of the way of the thrown spear without even sparing a glance for it. Taking the time to recover and throw it is time he decides he doesn't have, so he hefts his maul in one hand and charges toward the enemy right through the flames, letting out a bellowing war cry the town's eminent glaive taught him and focusing in on the archer.

The other defenders will know he is here by the deepness of his own cry, and at the least he hopes to disorient the enemy further as he charges into the fire without flinching, knowing the pain will not last and his own talents will allow him to heal the burns later as if they never were at all.

A small part of him wonders how shocked Cyrel would be at this moment, the rest is focused on protecting those who need saving.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
The archer who had thrown the spear backs his mount away from the flames, then backs some more when Cobin charges at him with the maul. He hastily grabs another arrow and aims it at Cobin.

The other archers regain control of their mounts and prepare more arrows with fire. They've begun shouting things at each other in an unfamiliar language. The lancer charges toward Cobin from his right, lance positioned to skewer Cobin's midsection.

"Cobin!" shouts his mentor from several yards to his left. He and the other defender glaives are fighting the other three raiders. He continues in the village's own peculiar dialect. "Try to draw them back toward us and end up behind them to flank! We have a plan!"

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin listens, then acts as if he is trying to dodge both lancer and archer and veers to the side, trying to help the other villagers put their plan into effect. If nothing else, he expects to draw their fire due to his size and figures everyone will capitalize on that. Not being stabbed is, of course, part of the goal as he tries to avoid burning, stabbing and arrows all at once without tripping over his own feet in the process.

His travels have been quite broadening, but it has been some time since he's been a  battle of this nature that wasn't practise for such an affair.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin deftly avoids a hail of arrows, and the lance, which pass through the point where he would've been if he hadn't veered. The raiders shout more things at each other as they follow him over to the other side of the battle. Soon all of the raiders are back together, with three facing the other defenders and five facing Cobin. The archers once again ready their arrows...

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin skids to a halt once in position, a little surprised he survived but the raiders are hurt and surprised. He can't expect the luck to last forever, but he uses the moment to check on his mentor, trying to figure out their game plan beyond Cobin being a target to distract them while they attacked from behind, or even use the grace period to get the other villagers out of harm's way -- which, as far as he is concerned, would be a sensible plan in itself.

He hefts his maul and lets out a deep warning growl, hoping to spook the raider's mounts a little and trying to get any edge he can over the enemy.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
As Cobin's gaze moves past the rest of the village, he can see that they do seem to be evacuating the buildings closest to the fight. An organized fire brigade has started, with women and children handing buckets of water toward the fires.

"Good, Cobin!" shouts his mentor from the other side of the grouped up raiders. He and the other defenders are harrying them with their spears. "Just hold position right there!"

The four archers facing Cobin aim their arrows at him and growl back. The lancer is slightly in front, prepared to parry Cobin's maul.

Cobin, meanwhile, notices that directly behind him are four other raiders crawling very quietly on their bellies through the grass. They are dragging what looks like a net of thick ropes between them.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin shall crouch, as if trying to avoid fire from the arches, and in reality is readying events to evade arrows and have them hit the crawling raiders. He takes a couple of steps back, as though uncertain of a plan of attack against the mass in front, crouches as though assessing them further.

"I imagine you feel brave, setting fire to the homes of families, terrifying innocent children like the cowards you are. Come, then, if you are brave enough," and prepares to evade arrows.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin frowns on realizing they know where the raiders behind him are; it wasn't the best plan, but it was better than nothing at all. At least the other fighters have him as a definite distraction. He moves, attempting to evade the net and trying desperately to think up a plan .... 12 raiders is too many, and those who fled could just come back with more even if the village did win. Unless someone else has a very useful cypher, he's not sure what to do -- he's good, but even six-on-one odds aren't ones he'd like to face.

He scrambles toward the side, trying to focus harder on the here and now.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
As Cobin tries to sidestep the net, he trips over the end of a lance that has suddenly popped up from behind a clump of grass. As he crashes to the ground, the net settles neatly on top of him, and the fifth crawling raider drops the lance and reaches over to cinch it tight. Soon Cobin is securely restrained and surrounded.

"Great work! We have him!" shouts the lancer who had been calling out commands before. The rest of the raiders stop fighting with the village defenders, who look rather relieved.

"Good job, Cobin," says the mentor glaive. "You followed orders well, even under extreme danger to yourself. You are destined to become a great warrior."

The raiders gather around Cobin, and the lancer nudges Cobin with his foot. "Can you walk on your own or do we have to drag you to the portal?"

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Cobin stands. He's never heard of 'being captured' as being a great warrior, and yet it seems his mentor felt the battle could not be won -- at least not without a cost too high for it to be a true victory. And he was also taught that one must fight as best one can, and lose in battles first. Learn defeat, and then you get everything. Win, and you just stand to lose it all. Defeat teaches lessons victory never understands. He looks over at his mentor, nods briefly in humility and stands.

"I can walk just fine," quietly, leaving the implication that he can still fight hanging in the air for a moment.

"I came to find a village under attack and burning. Why you have done this?"

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
Some of the raiders on foot take a nervous step back from Cobin as he stands, watching him warily for any sudden moves. After a slight hesitation, two of them move to either side and grab the backs of his elbows from where they're tangled in the net. They leave the net wrapped around him as they propel him away from the village and into a patch of tentacular trees.

"We came for you of course, O Blue One," says the lancer. He remains on foot, leading his mount as they walk. The archers and other lancer remain on their mounts and follow close behind them. Some of them seem to be guzzling from their waterskins with great gusto. "You are well known across these lands."

In the middle of the patch of trees, beside a small pool of water, is a tall, oval apparition that glows bright blue. As they approach, half the animals suddenly bolt for the pool, taking their surprised riders with them. They plunge their heads underwater and begin slurping mightily. The net-wielding raiders tighten their grip on Cobin, continuing to propel him toward the portal.

"In you go then," says the lancer, as if nothing is happening behind them.

Re: An Unexpected Side Trip: Cobin
"I left them because I was known, and had no wish to bring harm here," Cobin says softly. "That I returned when I did owes much to luck and the gods, but whose luck remains to be seen I think." He walks forward, inwardly chagrined at the delight be is taking in the misfortunes of the raiders, but they did bring harm to his home.

He takes a breath, reminding himself that there are many sides to all stories, and desperation turns even the kindest person into a monster. There is a reason for their actions, and knowing it will at least give knowledge he did not have before. He walks forward in the same focused calm to step through the portal and seek answers on the other side.

Entering the portal, the blueness brightens until it's all that Cobin can see. A moment later, it flashes up to blinding, and all other sensations cease.
